3 FROM THE EDITOR S DESK Tonight s Gloucestershire Senior Challenge Cup Semi-Final, sees us host our close Calor League rivals YATE TOWN, and we extend a warm welcome to Players, Officials and fans alike. We are the current holders of the trophy, having defeated Cinderford Town last season, this being the second occasion that we have held it, but The Bluebells themselves have been winners of this competition on three occasions, so there is plenty to play for this evening. Whoever progresses to the Final, will meet either Bristol City Reserves, FGR, Gloucester City or Cheltenham Town Reserves. Our last home match against TIVERTON TOWN proved that our work on our pitch over the last couple of seasons is paying dividends. Tivvy manager John Clarkson was full of praise for the condition of the surface, considering the weather in the previous week. So, a big thankyou to JON TUCK & PETE CROWLEY for their hard work and devotion. It proved to be an entertaining game, which was deservedly won by The Yellows who seemed to be just that little bit stronger. Sam Malsam bagged the all important strike after 64 minutes, with a low shot from almost 30 yards. Whether we can hold on to a play-off place remains to be seen, but I feel sure that Tiverton will be in the mix. Coming on the heels of our defeat at SWINDON SUPERMARINE another promotion-chasing side, these were two big results going against us, which may prove crucial at the end of the season. On Saturday, we were due to make our firstever visit to the DCS Stadium, Knights Lane, and home of STRATFORD TOWN FC. Unfortunately, the weather overnight on Friday, finished off any chances of play on a surface which was reportedly already very wet. No surprise really, as the Division One South programme was virtually wiped out. MERTHYR TOWN crushed CLEVEDON TOWN 6-0 before 402 fans and tonight s visitors YATE TOWN went one better by hammering bottom club FLEET TOWN 7-0. That pushes The Bluebells closer to a playoff spot. EVESHAM UNITED are the visitors to The Glass Consultants UK Stadium, next Saturday, February 1 st, and then on Tuesday 4 th, PAULTON ROVERS will be here in the re-arranged game from New Year s Day. This is followed by two difficult games on the road, to NORTH LEIGH (8 th ) and GUILDFORD CITY (Wed 12 th ). A coach will be running to both games and should you wish to book seats, then you should contact DANNY WEST on BRIDGWATER TOWN are here on Saturday 15 th, with KYLE TOOZE and several other ex- Mangos lining up against us. There has been a big turnaround of players at Fairfax Park since the summer, and it s still continuing, but their biggest problem is being able to host a game due to the flooded Somerset levels. We finish the month at CINDERFORD TOWN on Saturday 15 th. A definitive month, I feel, which will go a long way to deciding whether we stay in the top five. Some tough games there, amongst promotion-chasing rivals and will test us fully. Thankyou everyone for your support. So, remember the cry COME ON THE FIELD Or, if you prefer COME ON THE MIGHTY MANGOS EDITOR Cirencester started against Godalming Town but the game was abandoned, and the two games played produced 13 goals. 7 SPOTLIGHT Everything looked on course for a possible play-off spot last season, as The Bluebells raced up the table, but with six games remaining, a couple of unexpected defeats meant that they could only finish 6 th, and six points behind Paulton Rovers. Bluebell fans had been happy as the club s FA Cup exploits of 2012/13 exceeded everyone s expectations and they reached the First Round Proper. The first shock came in the Preliminary Round when the highly-rated POOLE TOWN Dolphins were crushed 5-0 at Lodge Road. The Bluebells then travelled to WINCHESTER CITY in the First Qualifying Round and came away with a 2-1 victory. When the 2QR draw gave them a home tie with Conference North OXFORD CITY, most people saw it as the end of the adventure, but the Lodge Road boys had their tails up and Oxford were depatched 2-1. Division rivals NORTH LEIGH were the next visitors to Lodge Road in the 3QR, but they suffered a defeat of the same scoreline. NEWPORT COUNTY were current leaders of the Conference when the draw for the 4thQR was made and by now, everyone were sitting up and taking notice. Surely, this really was the end of the journey? Incredibly, with five minutes remaining, The Bluebells were 3-1 ahead, but two dramatic very late goals pulled the score to 3-3 and a replay in Wales was needed. A truly incredible result happened over the bridge, as The Bluebells stunned everyone by winning 3-1, after extra-time. For the first time in their history, Yate Town made national headlines and featured in national newspapers. They were in the draw for the First Round Proper and they were off to CHELTENHAM TOWN. Despite the 0-3 scoreline, in front of 3,055, the players did their club proud and The Robins survived a few anxious moments before their fitness took its toll. Its was difficult to understand why then, their league form had been so poor at the start of the campaign. This is Manager ROB COUSINS third full season in charge at Lodge Road. He took over in a caretaker capacity in February 11, from Dave Mogg and saw the club safely complete 2011/12, just below halfway in the table. However, Rob and his Assistant, MICHAEL MEAKER, have had a major rebuilding job in the summer as most of his successful squad moved on. The club began life as Yate Rovers in 1906 and in 1946, they were re-formed and were known as Yate YMCA, playing in the Bristol & District League and the Avon Premier Combination. Yate YMCA were amongst the founder members of the Gloucestershire County League in 1968 and in the following year, they dropped that title in favour of the name, Yate Town. A major step forward in the club s progression occurred in 1983, when they obtained membership of the Hellenic League, moving on to the first step of the non-league pyramid system. Promotion to the Premier Division was soon accomplished when at the conclusion of the 1984/85 season, the club finished runners-up behind Pegasus Juniors in Division One. They won the Hellenic Premier League, the following season, when they remained unbeaten at home. That successful formula continued into the 1988/89 season when they retained the Championship crown, losing just one league game. They also won the Gloucestershire Challenge Trophy. In the quest for further football prestige, the club were granted election to the Southern Football League (Southern Division), in Yate Town moved to their present ground in Lodge Road in 1984, having previously played at Yate Aerodrome ( ), Newmans Field ( ) and Sunnyside Lane ( ) to prepare for the higher standard of football. Covered accommodation was erected in 1987 and floodlighting came in FIELD REVIEW -3
8 SPOTLIGHT continued. The 1993/94 season was disappointing as The Bluebells finished second from bottom in the Midland Division. Luckily, relegation was avoided but re-structuring of the Southern League meant that the club was again switched back to the Southern Division after just three seasons in the Midland. 1994/95 saw the club make a terrible start to the campaign, which led to long-serving manager, Pete Jackson, being relieved of his duties and the appointment of former Bristol Rovers favourites, Ian Alexander and Phil Purnell, brought about an immediate change in the club s fortunes. They enjoyed a good end to the season to finish 16 th. They again reached the final of the Gloucestershire Senior Cup, losing on penalties, after extra-time, to Cheltenham Town but their young squad finished in the top half of the table. Golden Jubilee season was in 1996/97 and during the 1997/98 close season, John Freeguard was appointed manager, but he resigned after two victories in seventeen games and was replaced by Martin Durnell, who had been manager of the Youth team. However, the club still finished in bottom place, but once again, were saved from relegation, by further re-structuring. They returned to the Midland Division in 1999/2000, which was re-structured and re-named, but were relegated back to the Hellenic League. The Bluebells returned to the Southern league in 2002/03 and finished 16 th in the Western Division in 2003/04 and won promotion to the Premier Division, along with rivals Mangotsfield, at the end of 2004/05. Their four seasons at that level saw them finish 6 th, 14 th, 10 th and 21 st. They won the Gloucestershire Senior Trophy twice during that time, with victories over Bristol Rovers and Cheltenham Town. They won the trophy again in 2010/11, winning 3-2, again against Cheltenham Town. Their return to the Division One South & West One, saw them finish in 13 th place, in 2009/10, whilst they finished 14 th in 2010/11. They recovered from their poor start in 2011/12 and ended in 13 th spot. As mentioned, they were 6 th in 2012/13. INTRODUCING THE BLUEBELLS ROB COUSINS PLAYER / MANAGER Rob took on the role of Caretaker/Manager following the departure of Dave Mogg in February 11 and accepted the post of Player/Manager permanently in mid April. His spell with Mangotsfield United saw him make 61(2) appearances, after being released by Tiverton. A former England semi-professional, he started his career with Bristol City and signed for Bath City in He moved to Yeovil Town in 1996, when he won three caps for the semi-pro side and then moved to FGR and Tiverton. He left Mangotsfield for Paulton Rovers and whilst there, made his 1,000 th senior appearance in football. Nicknamed Trigger. D.O.B 09/01/71 Aged 42. MICHAEL MEAKER PLAYER/COACH Michael had three spells at Cossham Street, before moving to Yate Town. Born 18 th August 1971, so now 42, he has played in the Hellenic league with Henley Town and was also a prominent goalscorer at Hounslow. Also appeared for Southall Town & Northwich Victoria. Born in Perivale, he has a wealth of Football League experience with QPR, Reading, Sheffield United, Bristol Rovers Plymouth Argyle and Torquay United. Whilst at QPR in the Premier League, his transfer fee to Reading was for 550,000! Before his last Cossham Street spell, he helped Bitton to the Western league title. His career at Mangotsfield saw him make 53(7) appearances and score 21 goals FIELD REVIEW - 4

When not in the Physio Room, you will find Stephen in the Kit Room looking after our First and Reserve Team kits. In the FA Cup this season, Yate Town started as though they might emulate last season s success. They defeated Cowes Sports 2-1, at Lodge Road, and then overcame Chippenham Town 3-2, in the 1 st Qualifying Round, also at home. The draw was also kind to them in the 2 nd Qualifying Round, again at home, and this time Bideford AFC were beaten 2-1. Incredibly, they had another home draw against Gloucester City in the 3 rd Qualifying Round, which finished 2-2. Unfortunately, it all went wrong in the replay as The Tigers won 7-0. A brave effort again though, by The Bluebells. FIELD REVIEW -6
13 AND ANOTHER THING!! Just a 1-pager tonight & loads to chat about, as usual, so let s crack on without further ado: FIRST BATCH OF QUICKIES: Credit to any West Ham fans, who travelled to both Forest (0-5) & Man City (0-6) inside 3 days, and at the end of the Man City game, manager Sam Allardyce was straight down the tunnel after the final whistle so much for thanking the fans for their support then.in a later radio interview, he also said he saw nothing to apologise to the fans for! Huh? Not even to the young boy crying his eyes out on TV at the Forest game? Bye, bye, Big Sam And which game simply epitomised what the FA Cup is all about? Not Forest v West Ham. Not even Aston Villa v Sheffield United. No, it was ROCHDALE 2, LEEDS UNITED 0, no question. It even looks highly unlikely as I type it, because to us older fans, Leeds United is still a huge name in the game, despite mid-table Championship status these days (and losing 6-0 at Sheffield Wednesday!) & that win for the Dale was a huge advert for the FA Cup, the greatest competition in the world, which is why us non-leaguers love to take part in it too.. And meanwhile, Bristol City major shareholder/owner/former chairman Steve Lansdown recently wiped 35m off the club s total debts of 55m, just like that gone. That is one amazing gesture by Mr Lansdown & it doesn t matter how wealthy he is, that is one heck of a sum of money to write off in an instant. Even though, Mr Lansdown will still have his critics, but one can only wonder where Bristol City would be now if Mr Lansdown had not come on to the scene all those years ago.. IT S GOT NOTHING TO DO WITH FOOTBALL!! 2 things today: (1) YOU COULD NOT MAKE IT UP 1: Spotted this on ITV News back on 7 January, as their reporter at Langport in Somerset was on air live to report back on all the flooding in & around the town. The reporter s name was Dan RIVERS!!! (Chuckle, chortle..) (2) YOU COULD NOT MAKE IT UP 2: Totally unbelievable how a driver last week in Aberystwyth, who already had 11 points on his license, pleaded guilty to a string of further offences & those 11 points instantly became 29.. and yet the magistrates allowed him to keep his licence because he would lose his job & become homeless. TWENTY NINE POINTS. No further comment necessary. SECOND BATCH OF QUICKIES: Now cricket fans have, understandably, been hurting this winter thanks to England s dreadful show in Australia for the Ashes & 1-day games, but I wonder how football fans would have re-acted if the England football team had performed as c**p as this? Perhaps it would have been like 1966 when Italy tried to sneak home (in the early hours) on the quiet (in disgrace) after losing 1-0 to North Korea, but they were still met at the airport by irate fans who pelted them with tomatoes and some of them were still in the tins Meanwhile, credit to the 2,358 Rovers fans & 1,000+ City fans who followed their teams in the FA Cup to Birmingham & Watford respectively, only for both teams to put the FA Cup on the back-burner until next season. It s been a c**p season for both Bristol clubs & yes, there have been signs of improvement, but a bit of Cup glory would have given either one of them a huge lift as well as national media interest, especially if City had gone to the Etihad but avoiding relegation now is all that really matters! FINAL BATCH OF QUICKIES: So Blackpool decided to sack Paul Ince last week by TEXT MESSAGE. That is a truly shoddy way of dealing with such a decision & if you or I were to be fired by any employer, it would be done in a proper, HR sort of way. Didn t the Blackpool chairman have the bottle to tell Ince to his face?...meanwhile, former boss Roberto Mancini said last week that he made the current Manchester City side, who are enjoying much success right now & scoring goals for fun. Yes, he signed a lot of those players & helped to mould them into a unit, but if they were a car, then he only got then them into the first 2 gears. Manuel Pellegrini came along, gave them an MOT, tweaked a few things, made an addition or two, changed their oil & plugs & he now has them running nicely in 3 rd, 4 th & 5 th gears Now it had to happen sooner or later former Ipswich, Swansea & Barnsley striker Jason SCOTLAND has finally moved to SCOTLAND! He joined Hamilton Accies last week. Get the shortbread out, Jason And guess how many Southport fans went to Luton for a Tuesday night Conference game around Christmas?? Just SIXTEEN. But fair play to them for such a long trip south in midweek! THE FIELD MARSHALL FIELD REVIEW -7
