2 WELCOME FROM MATT & MIKE Welcome everyone to the Simplyhealth City Ground for tonight s re-arranged match against Champions, Taunton Town. We particularly welcome the players, officials and supporters that have made the journey East from Taunton and we hope you enjoy your evening with us and safe journey home! Congratulations to Taunton Town on winning the title that they have thoroughly deserved and good luck for next season as they move into the Southern Premier League. Both sides come into the game on the back of draws at the weekend. Taunton drew with fellow high-flyers, Wimborne Town. Whilst the Citizens came from behind to draw 1-1 away at Swindon Supermarine, thanks to Rob Carr s late second-half leveller. In recent weeks, there have been lots of goings-on in the former capital. Pat Cox has left the club by mutual consent. Whilst Paul Murray and David Malone will be remaining at the club, albeit with Paul Murray in a different capacity. Elliott Trodd has agreed to become the new Club Chairman. Darrell Gowers will be stepping down as Vice-Chairman, and Martin Moody has relinquished his role as Secretary, with Alan Davis coming into the role to replace Martin. City s recent form has been good with a comprehensive 4-1 home win against Yate Town last time out at the Simplyhealth City Ground, and that was followed a fine comeback at Salisbury. City were 2-0 down at half-time but two second-half goals from Adam Tomasso and Josh Harfield salvaged a point for Davo s side. City were then beaten 1-0 away at AFC Totton on Thursday before another hard-earned and deserved point away at Swindon Supermarine on Saturday. Your Programme Editors, Matt Richbell & Mike Carter, are running the London m Marathon this Sunday. See the link later in the programme to be able to sponsor them! Coming up this week, see Ryan Andress and Elliott Trodd s Under 18s play against Team Solent at Romsey Town FC on Thursday night. Kick-off is at 19:45. Get down to the Bypass Ground to support our young Citizens!

8 DAVO S DIARY Good evening and a very warm welcome to Taunton Town for tonight s league match. I was to start off by congratulating Leigh and all of his players and their committee and supporters for a fantastic achievement in winning the league comfortably, they have been the bet side we played for sure and have blown sides away and on a long unbeaten run. We are delighted that we can host you tonight and can congratulate you personally for it, although we will also be doing our utmost to be the first side to beat the champs as well!! I wish you a pleasant stay with us and a safe trip home after the game. To say it s been a tough week would be an understatement for our lads, all of the postponed games and the way it s all fallen couldn t have given us a tougher spell of fixtures in the space of a week/10 days including tonight, to have 5 games in that space of time all against sides in the play-off shakeup is obscene really, it hasn t gone perfectly for us, however I couldn t have been prouder of the boys for what they have given me and for this football club! Firstly a very impressive and comprehensive victory against Yate last Saturday with a 4-1 win, followed by a superb draw at Salisbury after being 2-0 down at the break, then defeat to AFC Totton away 1-0 when an early poor goal conceded was our undoing, followed by a dominant display from us without being able to get the goal which was the least we deserved, was also disappointed with events after the game which our fans had to endure but that s another matter, although comes as little surprise to me. To have to go less than 48 hours later after that disappointment to Swindon who were 4th and had a free week and play as we did, 1-0 down we chased and hassled them throughout and got an equaliser only to go and chase again for the victory, I was bursting with pride with the lads and I can t thank them enough for their attitudes and efforts and I certainly wouldn t swap them lads for any that we have played of late, so that s how much potential we have in this group! I must finally thank all of the fantastic supporters who travelled all over to cheer the boys on, we are all very grateful for the support you had given us, there really is a strong bond between the staff/players and the fans which I ve not experienced like this in my career very often, we will try and give you a few more smiles and reasons to cheer in the remaining games this year, then will see what we can do for an even more exciting year next year! Enjoy the game! Up the citizens! Davo

9 CHAIRMAN S COMMENTS It is good to be playing at home after three away games. We are also in the midst of an end to the season that sees the Citizens play eight games in twenty-one days. This is a lot of football for the players, who have stood up to the test so far especially considering that we have a small squad. Our performance last Saturday away to Swindon Supermarine showed what the team are made of in a good game against a decent Swindon side. The game ended in a one all draw, which was a fair result. We now have three games at home, tonight, Saturday v North Leigh and next Tuesday night against Cirencester. Tonight, we welcome the crowned league champions, Taunton Town, here to the Simplyhealth City Ground. They deservedly hold the top spot, which they have occupied for most of the season. We congratulate the Peacocks for their success and wish them well in the higher league next season. Off the pitch recent discussions as to next season have produced a good result. Following weeks of speculation, we can now confirm that Winchester City Football Club has made a final decision in their quest to reorganise prior to the season. The Club has held talks with several interested parties, who have expressed an interest in taking control of the Club. None of these discussions have resulted in a satisfactory way forward. We are very pleased therefore to announce the following appointments, which have now been confirmed by the Committee of WCFC at a committee meeting last night. Chairman: Elliott Trodd Treasurer: Paul Murray Director of Football: David Malone Secretary: Alan Davis Elliott, who is 44, is currently Head of Youth Football, where we have enjoyed a lot of success and is a committee member. He is also a successful local businessman and lives locally. The future is bright. It is red and black! Regards Paul Murray Chairman (until 30 th April) Winchester City Football Club

10 IN THE OPPOSITION DUGOUT TAUNTON TOWN CLUB HISTORY The present Taunton Town Football Club was formed in December 1947 by a few local businessmen and played their first friendly fixture during Easter They then played on a number of grounds such as Mountfields, French Weir, Victoria Park, Huish Old Boys and finished up at Denman s Park, Haines Hill. Having joined and played in the Somerset Senior League, 1953 became a notable year. The club gained admission into the Western League and moved into Wordsworth Drive, their present home. The club struggled financially and depended heavily on a very active Supporters Club during the late 50s and early 60s. 1968/69 saw an upsurge in the club s fortunes with manager Doug Hillard securing the Western League championship for the first time. During the middle 1970s Ron Gingell became manager and the club were runners up for four consecutive seasons. The 70s was also highlighted by the club purchasing the ground from Taunton Borough Council and the installation of floodlights. During 1977 the club gained election to the Southern League. The club became a limited company in 1981 and the new board soon decided that Southern League football was too expensive and the club reverted to the Western League in Seven years later the championship pennant returned to Wordsworth Drive under the management of Keith Bowker. In 1994 the team then managed by Terry Rowles battled through to the F A Vase final at Wembley Stadium and took the lead but Diss Town won the trophy in extra time. Russell Musker was appointed manager in November 1994 and another championship followed in After two seasons as runners up three consecutive titles followed together with the club s first ever Cup success a 2 1 victory over Berkhamsted Town in the F A Carlsberg Vase final at Aston Villa s newly modernised Villa Park stadium. This ended a sequence of 18 defeats in cup finals since the 1950s. Another Cup victory was achieved in 2003, lifting the Somerset Premier Cup for the first time with a 2-1 win over Yeovil Town. Peter Beadle took over as Manager in 2005 but left after only 14 games to join Newport County and former Hallen manager Gary Domone stepped into the hot seat after a disappointing start results began to improve and the club won its second Somerset Premier Cup by beating Mangotsfield United. Domone resigned as Manager in December 2007 and was replaced by Ian Jones, who himself resigned in April Former player Paul West, who lifted the FA Vase in 2001, took over and rebuilt the team with a local emphasis. West left the club in May 2012 and was replaced by Leigh Robinson. The club has gone from strength to strength since then and has reached the play offs for the last three seasons as well as winning the Somerset Premier Cup in three of the last four years. The icing on the cake came last season when a great run in the FA Cup led to a home tie with Barrow in the First-Round Proper and the crowd of nearly 2,300 included many of the players who reached the same stage in The match finished 2-2 and meant a long and arduous journey for the replay which we lost 2-1.

25 25 MALCOLM S MUSINGS We welcome Taunton Town to Winchester for today s game. This will be the 15 th ever meeting between the clubs. Our league record against them is 2006/07 H1-1 A1-1, 2007/08 H1-3 A1-1, 2008/09 H1-2 A0-3, 2012/13 H3-2 A3-4, H0-3 A1-2, 2016/17 A1-3 H1-1, 2017/18 A1-4 plus the fact that we beat them 3-0 in a F A Trophy game in 2008/09, so Taunton clearly have had the better of the games between the clubs. Today s match is between the county town of Hampshire and the county town of Somerset and both teams are previous winners of the F A Vase, with Taunton winning the competition in 2000/01 and being losing finalists in 1993/94. Today s opponents in fact boast an impressive F A Vase pedigree as in 10 seasons in the competition they not only reached 2 finals, but also appeared in 2 semi-finals, 2 quarter finals, the 5 th round twice and the 4 th round twice, and only in their first season in the competition did they fail to make an impact. At the time of writing Taunton were sitting comfortably at the top of the table having already won the title, with only one league defeat and an unbeaten away record. Earlier in the season we were beaten 4-1 at Taunton, with Oli Bailey being our scorer, and Ben Adelsbury from the penalty spot, Ollie Chamberlain, Ross Staley and Matt Wright scoring for Taunton. We did well to draw last season s corresponding match 1-1, with Craig Veal equalizing for the visitors in the second half, after Craig Feeney had given us a first half lead. Taunton was for many years a major landmark in non-league football with the surrounding area of Helland/North Curry being where you purchased your non-league directory (the non-league football fan s bible) with Tony Williams whose contribution to non-league football is legendary living there, and James Wright who still; reports on Taunton games also making a major contribution to non-league football. My first memory of Taunton Town (they changed their name from Taunton in 1968) was when they and Falmouth were the best teams in the Western League and they finished runners up in four consecutive seasons (They had previously won the title in their first season following the merger). It was perhaps that after following up their four successive second placed finishes with 9 th place they finally joined the Southern League where they spent six seasons before re-joining the Western League. They won the Western League title again in 1989/90, but just as the period 1992/93 to 2001/02 saw them perform consistently well in the F A Vase, it also saw them perform well in the league, and they finished champions 4 times, runners up 4 times, 3 rd once and 4 th once, and scored 996 goals in the process. This run of success enabled them to return to the Southern League and they have remained there ever since. In 2014/15, 2015/16 and 2016/17 they finished 4 th, 3 rd and 4 th respectively, but in each case, they failed to win promotion through the playoffs (Last season they lost to Tiverton in the playoff semi-final). In both1981/82 and 2016/17 they reached the 1 st round proper of the F A Cup, but were beaten by Swindon Town and Barrow respectively, (the latter after a replay). Their best season in the FA Trophy was 2003/04 when they reached the 3 rd round proper where they lost to Worthing. Former Taunton Town players Gerry Cakebread, Cliff Myers senior and Percival Whitton have all played in the football league. In addition to football the town of Taunton also hosts first class cricket where Somerset are a county who have had many fine players over the years play.

26 26 MATCH REPORT WCFC 4-1 YATE TOWN BY MALCOLM CLARKE Winchester playing their first match for two weeks beat Yate 4-1 with a good team performance. Yate themselves were just behind Winchester in the table, with both teams being outsiders for a playoff place, although Winchester's win keeps them very much in the race despite having a difficult end of season to negotiate. With Pat Cox, having left the club and Ollie Griggs having completed his loan spell from Dorchester Winchester made two changes to the starting line-up with Liam Gilbert and Adam Tomasso coming in. Joe Cook who like Gilbert was returning after a lengthy absence was on the substitutes bench. Winchester were operating with a five-man midfield with just Oli Bailey up front. Bailey headed just wide early on from a Rob Carr cross and it required a block from an opposing defender to keep out. Harvey Rivers in the Yate goal who last season gave a superb performance in keeping Winchester out in the last match before Craig Davis took over then made an excellent save to deny Gilbert at the expense of a corner. Winchester however took the lead in the 24th minute when captain Jamie Barron set up Bailey who made no mistake. Winchester continued to press and both Bailey and Dan Williamson forced saves from Rivers. It was 2-0 with 3 minutes to go to half time when although Williamson's shot appeared to be mistimed it appeared to be entering the net until Barron got the final touch. Yate had hardly a shot in the first half which Winchester clearly dominated, but at the start of the second half they hit the side netting. Winchester however responded well with Rob Carr hitting the bar with a thunderous effort, and Liam Gilbert having an effort deflected for a corner. From Carr's corner Adam Tomasso scored with a diving header to make it 3-0 after 53 minutes. It was the loyal Tomasso's first goal of the season. Winchester had a couple of half chances but Yate then forced Ryan Pryce to make his first save of the game when he saved from Tom Mellew. Winchester however made it 4-0 when the referee played a good advantage when substitute Simba Mlambo who looked impressive after coming on converted a cross from Danny King for his 3rd goal of the season. Winchester in fact used all three substitutes as they chose to rest players for the challenges that lie ahead. Joe Hayward who has settled into the team well at right back then made a couple of important and well executed blocks to keep the visitors out. Yate did pull a goal back when Trey Anderson converted a cross from David Sims-Burgess, although a Winchester defender may have also got a touch. Before the end, Williamson had a further shot saved by Rivers as Winchester scored four goals in a league game for the first time in Mary Finlayson who was an enthusiastic follower of both Winchester City and Eastleigh and was involved in local coaching has died in a Derbyshire hospital aged 45.
