DAVO S DIARY Good afternoon and a warm welcome to our visitors today Barnstaple Town, I wish their management, players and supporters a pleasant stay and then a safe journey home afterwards. I am Under no illusion that this game will be tough, they are scrapping to stave off any chance of relegation, they got a great result last weekend and so we are expecting a tough battle, we need to keep that great home form up to keep in the pack for the play offs. It s been a really horrible week or so since our last superb home victory against Didcot, we have been struggling badly with injury and that had really hampered us, that s an excuse though as we have more than enough quality to get results even with big players missing! Last Saturday at Bristol Manor Farm was a fairly decent performance for the majority of the game, they are a very big and powerful side and unfortunately that was our undoing as 2 set piece goals gave them a platform to beat us, we did put a fairly decent effort in though, our goal coming from Dan Williamson early on which we didn t manage to hold onto for long enough. That loss was followed up with a trip to Bishops Cleeve, it really was a horror of a day from start do finish with more and more injuries before, during and after the game and then conceding an early goal, then scoring from Jamie Barron and hitting the bar, then a really bad OG goal put us behind, followed by a spilled cross and tap in and somehow, we were 3-1 down at the break after a torrid 45 mins. We read the riot act at half time and to be fair we put in a much-improved display in the 2nd half, we had all of the game and chance after chance on a horribly bobbly pitch went begging, we threw more and more men forward and they scored with their only real attack of the half to kill the game, we did finally get a goal back with Oli tapping home after a well worked goal and Danny Cox cross. Really damaging defeat and one that we have to get over quickly now, we need to produce a few massive results to push us back into the frame, starting with today! Player news, we managed to bring Brad Gale in at short notice for Tuesday after all of the injuries it was much needed. He is a decent player having played for Poole Town, he will likely feature again this weekend. Rob Carr will be back after missing the last 2 due to work. Hopefully Adam Tomasso is available as well. We will still be without Joe Cook and Liam Gilbert and carrying a lot of niggles that lads are playing through, time for moaning about our rotten luck is over now though and we have to get on with it, we have put together a really good side and good group of lads and I m very confident we will bounce back! Get behind the boys as you always do, we need you in fine voice! Up the citizens! Davo

CHAIRMAN S COMMENTS Today, I start with news about our Youth teams. We now have a superb youth setup following a lot or work by Elliott Trodd and Ryan Andress and others. Both our U16 s and U18 s have made the Hampshire Cup Final after winning on penalties. Also Winchester Youth U15 s also made the Cup Final after a 2-0 win. We have a close relationship with the U15 s and have their players training with us. Winchester Youth is run by Ken Raisbeck, with whom we have a good relationship. So to confirm the following Cup Finals! U15 Winchester Youth at Alton Town FC 3G 1pm kick off Sunday 18th March U16 Winchester City - at Alton Town FC 3G 4pm kick off Sunday 18th March U18 Winchester City - at Romsey Town FC 7.45 kick off Thursday 19th April. Other Cup news. The First Team have been drawn against Blackfield & Langley in the semi-finals of the Hampshire Senior Cup at home on Tuesday evening, 6 th March. The other tie on the same night is Havant & Waterlooville v AFC Bournemouth. So, a mouth-watering Final looms, usually at St Marys. Before all of that there is the matter in hand of our match against today s visitors, Barnstaple Town. Both clubs played Bishops Cleeve last time out in the League with differing results. Barnstaple won their game whereas Winchester lost on Tuesday night. I am sure we will be doing everything possible this afternoon to put that behind us and to return to winning ways. Talks are still ongoing in relation to the future control of the Club, but there is nothing to report yet. We expect to be in a position to announce something at the end of March. Enjoy the game, Kind Regards, Paul Murray, Chairman, Winchester City Football Club

IN THE OPPOSITION DUGOUT BARNSTAPLE TOWN CLUB HISTORY Founded in 1904 as Pilton Yeo Vale, the club entered the North Devon league. They were founder members along with Ilfracombe, South Molton, Pilton Social Barnstaple Y.M.C.A, Braunton and Bideford. Their first ever league Match was on 1st October 1904 when they played Ilfracombe at Pilton Park and were defeated 4-2. The club changed it's name to Barnstaple Town at the end of the season, and continued in the North Devon League, Devon & Exeter League and then the South Western League. When the Western League was reformed after the Second World War, Barnstaple Town entered two teams, one in division 2 and a reserve side in division 3. The early 1950's were one of the club's most successful times under the management of Arthur Coles. In 1953, Barnstaple won the Western league First Division Championship but only after a nail biting climax to the season with everything depending on the results of matches being played on the final day of the League Season. On that day, Barnstaple Town beat Dorchester Town 6-1 and their challengers for the title, Street won 2-1 at Well City. That left the sides level on points and when the goal average was calculated Street had 2.07 and incredibly Barnstaple had 2.08.Rumour has it that most of the 3,000 crowd that watched Barnstaple beat Dorchester stayed behind at Mill Road after the match to await the Street result. Barnstaple Town also beat Plymouth Argyle in the final of the Devon Pro' Cup at Home Park that season, but sadly Coles moved on to Weymouth and the club never had quite the same success again. Cameron Buchanan, the former Wolves and Bournemouth player, local lads Fred Smale and Ray Smith, Bill Johnson formerly of Grimsby Town, Noel Peyton, the ex-leeds United and Eire International, John Hancock formerly with Exeter City and ex Barnsley and Doncaster Rovers player Lol Chappell all tried to revive Barnstaple's fortunes from the managers seat but with no great success. Player Manager Charlie Sells, who had been with Exeter City, built up the club in the 1970's followed by the former Andover keeper Trevor Morris and then Brian Perks. Perks left Mill Road for Bideford during the season of 1979/80 and under the guidance of joint managers Brian Hill and Dave Baglow, Barum went on to win the Western League Championship for the second time, winning by one point from AFC Bournemouth Reserves. That title went virtually unnoticed as there was a printer s strike at the time and no newspapers were printed. Richard Gray, the former Falmouth Town player, took over the following season and brought some success to the club although they never won the title. A couple of seasons later he left after a disagreement with the club, and after a succession of managers Town lost their Premier status in 1989/90. Brian Hill was again appointed manager to put Town back in the Premier Division and after 3 seasons in the wilderness won the First Division Championship in 1993/94 in fine style scoring more goals and recording more points than ever before. Jimmy Hargreaves, Eddie Kelly, Phil Lloyd, Mark Jenkins and John Hore have all tried the manager's seat since but all without success. Jeff Evans was appointed manager in 2002 and along with his assistant Peter Buckingham guided the club

to the final of The Devon Bowl where they were narrowly beaten by Tiverton Town. The following season Peter Buckingham took over as sole manager and Barum finished in seventh place in the league, their highest finish for many a season. During the 2008/09 season Owen Pickard took over the manager s seat for his first taste of management and was able to save the club from what looked like certain relegation at the Christmas period of the season. Owen Pickard left at the end of the season and the team is now lead by Dave Griffiths and former second team manager Terry Chapple. With the club now working within their means Town are now fielding a much younger side with many of their players experiencing Western League football for the first time. Barnstaple remained in the Premier League until the end of the 2012/13 season when they were relegated to Division One the first time in their history that they had finished at the bottom of their division. The gloom surrounding Mill Road was to be short lived as in the December of 2013 the club appointed the joint management team of Barry Yeo and Karl Baggaley and the rest, as they say, is history. Building a squad where, on occasions, all eleven players on the field were born in Barnstaple surely a record that not many teams at any level of football would be able to equal, the managers turned the 2013/14 season around and finished a creditable 3 rd. In their first full season in charge, 2014/15, the club returned to the Premier Division by winning the First Division title for the 3 rd time in its history. Their total of 100 points, 128 goals scored and a goal difference of 101 were among 15 club records set during the year, in addition to reaching the final of the Les Phillips Cup for the second time. 2015/16 was to be equally successful. After an average start the team went on two long unbeaten runs which saw them finish as runners up in the Premier Division, missing out on back to back titles by just 3 points, but securing the coveted prize of promotion to the Southern League Division One South & West. This would see them playing at the highest level in the club s history the biggest step the club had taken since joining the Western League in At the end of 2016/17, having secured Southern League football for a second season with a 17 th place finish, the management duo stood down and as is often the case in these situations, most of the players also left for challenges elsewhere. Richard Pears left Exmouth Town and took over as manager during the summer and took Barnstaple Town into 2017/18 with virtually a completely new squad. After a run of poor results, he decided to step down in the December and his assistants Kevin Darch and David Griffiths were appointed managers initially to the end of the season.

21 MALCOLM S MUSINGS We welcomed Barnstaple Town to Winchester for today s league game. Barnstaple Town who were promoted from the Great Mills Western League at the end of the 2015/16 season and are not to be confused with Barnstaple, who play in the North Devon League. Barnstaple won last season s corresponding match 3-0 in what was Craig Davis s first match as player manager of Winchester, with their goals coming from an own goal, a Liam Gregory penalty and a late goal from Shaun Copp. However earlier in the season we triumphed 4-1 at Barnstaple with Oli Bailey (2), Simba Mlambo and Rob Flooks scoring our goals and Billy Hopcroft scoring for Barnstaple in a game in which the home team had a player sent off in the first minute. Last season we won 3-1 at Barnstaple with Stuart Green, Craig Feeney and Howard Neighbour scoring our goals and Jack Jenkins netting a consolation for the home team. However, although last season was the first time the two clubs had met I have in fact seen Barnstaple Town play in a F A Cup tie at Eastleigh in the 2004/05 season, and have also visited the town when on holiday in nearby Chittlehampton many years ago, with my only memory being passing the TV shop every now and again to see how the test match was progressing. The F A Cup match saw Eastleigh win 5-0 with the Beck brothers Martin and Stewart and Danny Smith amongst the scorers. Martin was the manager at Alresford Town last season, while Danny Smith captained Winchester s F A Vase winning team of At that game, I jokingly said to Jane Beck mother of Martin and Stewart that she helped make two of the goals that day. Jane s husband Steve was scout at Eastleigh for many years and has now joined Paul Doswell at Sutton United. It is funny to think after what has subsequently happened that this was only Eastleigh s second ever appearance in the 3 rd qualifying round of the FA Cup, and on this occasion they lost to Tiverton Town, a club who were last season promoted from our division in the next round. Barnstaple Town were formed in 1904 as Pitton Yeo Vale and prior to the second world war were members of the North Devon and Devon and Exeter leagues, both of which they had previously won. In 1948 they joined the Western League, a league they had remained in ever since prior to being promoted to the Southern League at the end of last season. They finished champions of the top flight of Western League twice, in 1952/53 and 1979/80 and finished runners up three times. They have on three occasions finished champions of the second tier of Western League football, the most recent being in 2015 so this is their second successive promotion. They have on four occasions reached the 1 st round proper of the FA Cup, the most recent being in 1972/73 and have also reached both the 2 nd round proper of the F A Trophy and the 4 th round proper of the F A Vase, losing to eventual winners Arlesey Town in the latter instance. Amongst their former players are Lew Chatterley and John Hinton who also both played for Southampton. Lew was also for six years Lawrie McMenemy s right hand man at The Dell, and also helped Alan Ball while Ball was manager at The Dell. John Hore who made a total of almost 600 football league appearances representing both Plymouth Argyle and Exeter City is amongst their former managers.

22 MATCH REPORT WCFC 2-0 DIDCOT TOWN BY MALCOLM CLARKE Winchester climbed into fourth place and completed the double over a Didcot side who were also in the mix for a playoff place having on Tuesday achieved an excellent home win against Salisbury. Prior to the game, Winchester announced three signings and Adam Brice signed from Gosport Borough was thrust straight into the starting line-up in place of the injured Joe Cook in an otherwise unchanged starting line-up from the previous Saturday's trip to Mangotsfield. The other new signings Joe Sowden and Danny Cox were on the bench. Early on with persistent rain making conditions difficult Pat Cox forced a save from Didcot goalkeeper Leigh Bedwell, while at the other end George Jeacock hit the outside of the post. Despite the conditions, it was quite an open game and Ryan Pryce in the home goal made good saves from Ollie Thomas and Cameron McNeil. However, Winchester's pace was always a threat and they won a free kick in a dangerous position, but Robbie Carr's kick was narrowly wide. However, in the very dying seconds of the half a corner caused consternation in the Winchester defence, first rebounding off the top of the crossbar with the visitors also going close from the follow up. However, the game really came to life in the 48th minute when Winchester's captain Jamie Barron from within the D in the centre circle just inside Didcot's half saw the Didcot goalkeeper off his line and placing his lob to perfection, high enough to beat the goalkeeper, but not too high that it cleared the crossbar. It was a superb strike to give his side an important lead. Eight minutes later Winchester broke away and the move led to Oli Bailey being fouled in the penalty area. The referee having deemed the foul worthy of a yellow card, but initially went to book the wrong player. However, after consulting with both of his linesmen realised that Stuart Cattell who had already been booked was the culprit and Didcot were down to 10 men. However, although Bedwell in the Didcot goal got his hands to Barron's spot kick he could not prevent the ball entering the net. Numbers were evened up when Brice on his debut became the second number 5 in the match to receive a second yellow card. Didcot had still time to get back in the game, but further good goalkeeping by Pryce, some important blocks and shots that were narrowly off target ensured Winchester maintained their lead. They still looked dangerous on the odd occasion with Pat Cox always a threat, but they did not want to take unnecessary risks and bought in their other two new signings in the closing minutes. After the game Craig Davis said while heaping praise on skipper Jamie Barron for his spectacular goal that "IT was a good battling performance in difficult conditions".

23 MATCH REPORT BRISTOL MANOR FARM 4-1 WCFC BY MALCOLM CLARKE For the second time this season Bristol Manor Farm came from a goal behind to beat Winchester City. With Joe Cook and Liam Gilbert still injured, Andy Jenkinson and Rob Carr having work commitments, Adam Brice serving a one match ban and Simba Mlambo ill, Winchester made two changes to the starting line-up from Saturday with Josh Harfield and I K Hill coming in for Carr and Brice with two new signings and three youngsters on the bench. Bristol Manor Farm are having a good season following promotion from the Great Mills Western League and their performances on the pitch have seen attendances improve. Early on Troy Simpson hit the side netting for the home side, while Dean Stamp put in a dangerous cross that thankfully no home player was able to get a touch to. However, in the 15th minute Oli Bailey put Dan Williamson through and he made no mistake. Oli Bailey then chased a ball from Joe Hayward, but even with his pace the Bristol Manor Farm was able to get to the ball before him. However, the home side drew level after 1q5 minutes when Dean Stamp set up Troy Simpson to score. Both teams had chances during the remainder of the half. Pat Cox and Dan Williamson had efforts saved, I K Hill had an effort blocked, while the home side hit the top of the bar, Stamp coming close with a cleverly intended lob and Winchester having to make a couple of important blocks one of them from goalkeeper Ryan Pryce. However, on the stroke of half time the home team took the lead when after an effort from Stamp was deflected for a corner Ryan Mills headed home the resulting corner kick. Winchester started the second half brightly with Stuart Tovey making an important interception to keep out Oli Bailey and Dan Williamson having an effort deflected for a corner. At the other end, Troy Simpson's effort went just across the goal. Danny King's cross saw Jamie Barron and Williamson combine, although this did not result in an on-target effort being produced. Ryan Pryce then saved from home captain Jordan Metters. However, in the 75th minute a good cross from Metters was met with a low close range header from Jay Adams. A minute later the game was effectively over as a contest when once again a corner was converted this time with his feet by Lloyd Mills. After this Winchester never looked likely to get back in the game and the nearest we came to a further goal was when Pryce made two excellent saves from Stamp, one of which a tip over the bar was particularly good. With a couple of injuries being picked up during the game Winchester used all three substitutes bringing on new signings Joe Sowden and Danny Cox plus youngster Josh McCormick.
