DAVO S DIARY Good afternoon and a warm welcome to Bideford for this afternoons league match, the last home match before Christmas. I wish Bideford staff, players and supporters a pleasant afternoon and a safe long trip home afterwards. It s been a really good couple of weeks for us, after a run of 8 games in all competitions without a win, we have bounced back with 4 impressive wins in a row to get us right back on track, since my last notes we beat Larkhall at home 1-0 in a tight and physical encounter, that goal coming from a flowing move and finish from IK Hill. Next up we went to Street away who had been flying earlier in the season, coach travel issues meant we didn t arrive until 2.35p yet we still managed to get kicked off at normal time to avoid any form of fine that would have been incurred, we then put in a battling display in the first 45 minutes, then we stepped it up in the 2nd half and scored through Rawks excellent curled finish, we then controlled the game well, we scored the killer 2nd with sub Brett Cunningham finishing clinically, a really great result for us. We now have had 15 different goal scorers so far this season, there are only 5 players who have not scored in the entire squad who have played a match including Prycey, I see that as a huge positive, a lot of people were claiming we didn t have any goal scorers in the squad we had assembled, I think that s a huge positive for us and why we have played such good football this season, we have threats throughout the pitch, let s hope this continues. We have also scored 7 league goals from substitutes, this shows that we have players capable of changing games and wanting to make an impact when they step onto the pitch! We do have to be more clinical as a side but we do create plenty of chances which is a good sign, we have also tightened up at the back recently with only 2 conceded in the last 4 games and 2 clean sheets in a row! Player news, sadly Rob Flooks will be missing with a knee injury for a couple of weeks, he needs to rest that and we have to manage that correctly, this will mean a slight reshuffle, we do have a few options that we are looking into bring in, sadly the wages that people are commanding are blowing us out of the water, we simply will not break the bank on a player and disrupt what is special about this group, none of them are mercenaries and all play for the badge and each other more than any wage packet, anyone coming in must have that mindset, sadly this is not a trait that is easy to find in the modern football player, we will though keep evolving our squad as we see fit. Positively though Liam Gilbert is working his way back to full fitness and also Rob Carr is back available this weekend, Simba Mlambo will also hopefully be available to us after a couple of weeks out. One other person that you will notice in the dugout is my new assistant Sean Birchnall, Sean is an excellent coach who has managed at step 5 recently with Farnham Town as well as coaching at Camberley Town, he is also the Army 1st team manager very successfully, he is a fantastic addition to our management team and we are delighted to have him with us. Let s hope for a good game to leave you all with a good Christmas present in our last home game, we will need to be at our best as despite a current bad run in the league Bideford are a good side and I fully expected to be challenging this year, I am sure they will soon be back up in the top half and so we need to be at our very best today, shout and support the boys as always. Let s hope for a positive performance that we will need to get the result we are after. Enjoy the game! Up the Citizens! Davo

TODAY S VISITORS BIDEFORD AFC CLUB HISTORY Bideford A.F.C. is an English non-league football club from Bideford, Devon that plays in the Evo-Stik Southern League Division One South & West with rival clubs from the counties of Devon, Somerset, Dorset, Wiltshire, Hampshire, Gloucestershire, Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Oxfordshire. The club was first formed in the late 1890 s and was then called Bideford Town. They were nicknamed "The Robins" due to their red shirts and remain so to this day. Since the first decade of the twentieth century, the club has predominantly played at the Sports Ground, Kingsley Road in Bideford. Until entering hibernation for the duration of World War Two it was a highly successful club, albeit one that played the majority of its football in North Devon. We do not have any pre-world War Two records, but we do know in 1927 Cardiff City won the FA Cup and their captain was Fred Keenor who had 32 International caps, a number that was almost unheard of at that time. It was a big day for the club when Fred brought his cup winning team and the cup itself to Bideford. Following its reformation in the 1947/48 season, the club was reborn as Bideford Association Football Club and entered the Exeter and East Devon League with only two of the pre-war team surviving - Gerald Brommell and Fred Shute. The team in 1947/48 was run by a committee which met at the Maltscoop Inn and they selected the team also. For the start of the 1948/49 season Fred Pincott was appointed manager and the club had a house in Chanters Avenue for him to live in but team selection was still in the hands of the committee. Bideford were runners up in the 1948/49 season, and applied to join then the Western League Division Two. This was declined and instead they were made to join Division Three. Bideford won the division without losing a game and two seasons later they won the second division and promotion to Division One. At this time the club did not have a club house but there was a Nissen Hut just inside the main gate and a wooden grandstand, which was replaced with the present one after the Bradford City fire disaster. In 1964/65 Bideford reached the first-round proper of the FA Cup, and drew away at Colchester United 3-3 and lost home in the replay 1-2, at which BBC cameras were present. Bideford won the Western League three times before joining the Southern League in The club spent three seasons in the Southern league before the extra expense involved and increased travelling took its toll, forcing them to drop down back to the Western League. During their time in the Southern League, the club set an all-time FA Cup record when in they played thirteen FA Cup games in a single season as a result of playing numerous replays in qualifying rounds including needing five games to beat Falmouth Town and four more to beat Trowbridge Town in the next round. With the subsequent abandonment of second and further replays, this record is unlikely to ever be beaten again. Bideford were finally knocked out 0-2 by Bristol Rovers. In 1977/78 Bideford again reached the First-Round proper travelling to Portsmouth where they lost 1-3. Finally, they achieved the feat again in 1981/82 being knocked out by Barking 1-2. Two more Western League titles followed in the early 1980s before a financial crisis hit the club. A re-formation took place in 1987 leading to the current set up, a company limited by guarantee under the revised company name Bideford AFC (1987) Ltd. Under the chairmanship of Jim McElwee, and his successor Paul Mitchell, the club won four more Western League titles and also reached the FA Vase semi-finals where they lost to Winchester City. Despite winning the Western League four times under Manager Sean Joyce between 2000 to 2006, the club elected not to apply for promotion to the Southern League due to the amount of travelling and expense that would be involved in playing teams which, almost without exception, would be over 100 miles away. However after winning the Western League again for the 10th time in the 2009/10 season and winning the Devon St Luke s Bowl where they beat Exeter City 2 1 in the final, Bideford AFC accepted promotion to the Southern League in May 2010 joining Division One South & West. In only their second season in Division One (S&W) Bideford were crowned Champions by an impressive eleven-point margin and gained promotion for the first time in the club's history to the Southern League Premier Division. 2013/14 saw Bideford finish in their highest ever league position of 8th in the Premier Division but after four years at that level they were relegated for the first time in their history back to Division One in 2015/16. Several players from the club have progressed to Football League status, the most recent of them being Tony Dennis and Shaun Taylor. Three former internationals have played for the club at the end of their career, Welshman

Leighton Phillips, as well as Dermot Curtis and Will Haynes from the Republic of Ireland. Bideford have won the Western League ten times, as well as lifting silverware in the Devon St Luke's Bowl (5 times), Devon Professional Cup (8 times) and Western League Cup (4 times). They have also won the Western League Alan Young Cup (twice), Western League Subsidiary Cup and the Westward Ho! cup. In FA competitions, Bideford AFC s record is quite impressive, reaching the First-Round proper of the FA Cup on four occasions and reaching the Semi Final of the FA Vase in 2003/04. The 2009/10 FA Vase campaign saw Bideford reach the quarter final stage where they were knocked out by an impressive Lowestoft side. Manager Sean Joyce is an ex-professional footballer, who spent his career playing for Doncaster Rovers, Exeter City and Torquay Utd. 16 MATCH REPORT STREET 0-2 WINCHESTER CITY BY MALCOLM CLARKE I was not there, but from what I have picked up this happened. For the second successive Saturday Winchester won a game in the second half after a goalless first half. The result puts them into 9th place and four points ahead of Street who have two games in hand. Street joined this league from the Toolstation Western League at the start of this season and have made a reasonable start to the season. The clubs met in the F A Cup in 2016/17 with Winchester emerging 4-2 winners. Winchester made one change to the starting line-up from Saturday with Liam Gllbert replacing Ollie Griggs who reverted to the role of substitute. Early on the defences were mostly on top with hardly any clear-cut chances created. As the half-progressed Ryan Pryce had to save a shot from distance from Oscar Latas and Joe Cook's effort from the edge of the box was saved. Three minutes into the second half Jake Rawkins gives Winchester the lead with a lob from the edge of the box and the same player midway through the half is set up by Liam Gilbert but his effort was well saved. In the 82nd minute Brett Cunningham becomes the third substitute used by Winchester City and four minutes after coming on the youngster scored the second goal after bring set up by Tyrell Mitford. There was also success for the Winchester under 16 team who won against Littleton under 16 team who progress to the next round of the county cup. Winchester first team are at home to Bideford on Saturday.

MATCH REPORT WINCHESTER CITY FC 1-0 LARKHALL ATHLETIC BY MALCOLM CLARKE Winchester achieved only their second home league win of the season and their first since the opening week of the season as they beat Larkhall 1-0 and moved above the Larks in the table and now occupy 10th position in the table. The winning goal was a good team effort and was scored by I K Hill in the 80th minute. Hill who has recently re-joined the club from Alresford had come on as a second half substitute. Winchester made two changes to the starting line-up from Tuesday's game at Fleet with Tyrell Mitford and Ollie Griggs coming in for Simba Mlambo and Rob Carr. Reserve team players Fabio Manuel and Chey Jennings were on the Winchester bench. Early on Larkhall's prolific striker Lewis Powell shot over after an initial shot was blocked and also saw another of his efforts hit the side netting. At the other end, Winchester's Oli Bailey forced a save from Shaun Semmens in the Larkhall goal. The nearest we came to a goal in the first half was when Wayne Nderemani whose industry as a wing back caused Winchester a few problems had an effort saved by Pryce with the follow up resulting in the visitors only being denied by the woodwork and a goal-line clearance. Pryce also made a couple of further important saves in the first half to keep the scores level. Winchester though had a couple of attacking moments at the end of the first half with firstly Joe Cook shooting over after Barron's initial shot was blocked and then Cook forced a save from Semmens in the closing moments of the game's first period. Larkhall just about shaded the first half, but Winchester looked a more solid outfit in the game's second period. Both teams got in crucial blocks to cut out opposing attacks during the game's second period and an effort from Jamie Barron that was saved by Semmens was the only on target effort of note in the early part of the half, although the energetic Jake Rawkins was a major driving force for Winchester. The all-important goal came 10 minutes from time when I K Hill who replaced Tyrell Mitford in the second half finished an excellent move involving Jamie Barron and Joe Hayward with a low right foot shot from inside the area. Following the goal Larkhall tried their best to find an equalizer with Pryce being called into action three times and Craig Davis bringing himself on for Oli Bailey.

MALCOLM S MUSINGS We welcome Bideford to Winchester for this afternoon s game. Last Bideford completed the double against us winning 2-0 on the last day of the season with goals by Craig Allen and Sean Downing, although other results ended Bideford s hopes of the playoffs. In last season s corresponding match Bideford won 3-2 with Craig Duff scoring twice and Ben Seymour once, with Oli Bailey and an own goal providing Winchester s goals. The previous season we won 2-1 at Bideford thanks to goals by Stuart Green and Craig Feeney, the latter being a late penalty, having been 1-0 behind at the interval, while the match at Winchester was drawn 0-0. Prior to 2016/17 the only previous game between the clubs was the 2004 F A Vase semi-final where we won the second leg 4-0 after the first leg finished all square at 3-3, with Andy Forbes and Ian Mancey scoring three times for Winchester over the two legs. That season both ourselves and Bideford finished champions of their league with impressive records so this was a good result for us. Bideford football club were formed in 1890 s and spent a lot of their early career in the North Devon League and were in that league until they joined the Western League in They won division 3 of this league at the first attempt with 19 wins and 1 draw from 20 league games. Two seasons later they won Division 2 scoring 179 goals from 36 league games in the process. They spent the next 20 seasons in the top flight of Western League finishing champions three times and runners up three times before being promoted to the Southern League, where they stayed three seasons finishing in the top five in the first two of these. On leaving the Southern League they re-joined the Western League where they spent a further 35 seasons, but after finishing champions in five of the last nine of these returned to the Southern League. In 2011/12 they won the Southern League Division 1 South and West title and were promoted to the Premier Division where after finishing 8 th in 2013/14 they were relegated last season. In 1964/65 having been beaten seven times in the 4 th qualifying round of the F A Cup they finally reached the 1 st round proper of the competition, but lost to Colchester after a replay. They also reached this round in 1973/74, 1977/78 and 1981/82, but also suffered a further seven defeats in the 4 th qualifying round. In addition to their F A Vase semi-final appearance in 2003/04 they also reached the quarter finals of this competition in 2006/07 and 2008/09. Full International players to represent Bideford are Leighton Phillips who won 58 caps for Wales from 1971 to 1981, and the late Dermot Curtis who scored 8 goals in 17 games for the Republic of Ireland. The current Bideford manager Sean Joyce, who has been in charge since 1998, made a total of 200 football league appearances for the likes of Doncaster Rovers, Exeter City and Torquay United. Several other former Bideford players have played in the football league, while John Hore one of their former managers made a total of 593 football league appearances in his playing career. This season they were at the time of writing in the lower half of the table, but will be looking to return to the form in early November which saw them win league games against Cirencester (4-0) and Highworth (4-3) and Tiverton 5-2 in the league cup. Their total of 26 league goals at the time of writing was higher than that of the third and fourth placed clubs. Apart from last season I have visited Bideford once while on holiday in Chittlehampton, on the same holiday I also visited Barnstaple. As this is the last home match before Christmas I would like to wish you all the best for the festive season and will see some of you at Thursday s Christmas party.
