4 ROBERTS RAMBLINGS 19TH JANUARY 2019 Good afternoon and welcome to the staff, players, supporters and officials of Street for this Evo-stik Southern League Division One South fixture. We hope you enjoy our hospitality and have a safe journey back home after the match. Our visitors today currently sit in 11th place with nine wins, five draws and 7 defeats after 21 league games. They were knocked out of Emirates FA Cup by Plymouth Parkway after easing past Willand Rovers. They had a good run in the BuildBase FA Trophy, before finally losing to Weymouth in a replay and were knocked out of the Southern League Challenge Cup by Bideford. Street were promoted to the Southern League at the end of last season after finishing as runaway champions of the Toolstation Western Premier Division, amassing an impressive 99 points and 32 wins from 38 games. Street had an excellent Christmas period, winning three league games on the bounce, but they have had a bit of a dip since, drawing with bottom club, Barnstable and then losing twice, firstly at Yate by the only goal of the game and then at home to Larkhall Athletic. We played them back in September and came back from being 2-0 down at the break to get it back to 2-2 but they would count themselves as a little bit unlucky after hitting the inside of an upright in added time at the end of the match. They were strong, physical and direct and we will need to come out firing from the off if we are to get the better of a physical Street outfit. However, we come into this fixture having scored eight goals in the last two games and it was good to get a clean sheet last weekend, especially with the players we had missing. We will look to build on the 4-0 demolition of Slimbridge but we will be without several players who are unavailable or suspended. Ash Edenborough and Chris Taylor are back this week, but we re without six others. That leaves us very thin on the ground. We just need to carry on from where we left off. If you look at our form, we seem to go on a pattern of five games unbeaten and then we have a bad run and then we have another good run again. Hopefully, we re in the middle of a spell where we ll go on to pick up a few more points and a few more wins. This year is a massive learning curve for us as a club. If we can stay where we are or even progress up the league if we can get into the top 10, then I think it will be a great season for the football club. After today s match, we re off to Thatcham Town for our second match against them this season when I m sure that they will want to make amends for the 5-0 thrashing we handed out to them here at SaveOnTyres Stadium back in September. We then host Winchester City for our return fixture, before making the long trek down to the New Forest and Blackfield & Langley for the second time this season and our third game. Enjoy today s game, thanks for your support & see you in the bar later! Jeff KITCHENS, BATHROOMS, EXTENSIONS AND FULL BUILDS

12 STREET FC CLUB HISTORY Founded in 1880, Street Football Club is one of the oldest clubs in Somerset and was christened with the nickname The Cobblers due to a large shoe making history in the area. The club s early years were fairly successful, winning the Somerset Senior League on four occasions before the end of the century, the first time being the 1882/83 season. The club also had early success in the Somerset Senior Cup as they lifted the trophy in 1898 and again 2 years later. After winning the Somerset Senior League again in 1909/10, and the Somerset Senior Cup the following year, the club made the decision to join the Western League. With the Western League being put on hold in 1914 due to WW1, Street rejoined the league at the start of season 1919/20 in division 2. Unfortunately, the division was disbanded three years later so the club rejoined the Somerset Senior League, where they remained for the next eight years before re-joining the Western League for the 1930/31 season. The first season back in division 2 was none too successful, finishing 16th out of 17, but two years later Street were runners-up to Swindon Town Reserves - a feat they repeated in 1938 when finishing 2nd behind Weymouth - but in those days there was no automatic promotion from division 2 into division 1. The following season the club had its finest hour by reaching the first round proper of the FA Cup away at Football League 3rd division south Ipswich Town, but sadly lost 7-0. After WW2 Street returned to the Western League 1st division and in season 1947/48 had a memorable campaign ending 3rd in the league and reaching the FA Cup first round proper for the second time - after knocking out Yeovil Town 2-1 in front of a crowd of 5000 at the Victoria Field - where they were beaten 5-0 by Cheltenham Town. The 1952/53 season saw the club finish runners-up in division 1, losing out to Barnstaple Town who had a 0.01 better goal average after the sides had finished level on 44 points. The club then went through a lean spell and was relegated to division 2 in 1955 and then re-joined the Somerset Senior League in 1960 when the Western League division 2 was again disbanded. In the mid 1960 s the introduction of Tommy Wilson as manager saw the club s fortunes rise again. At the same time, they left the Victoria Field and moved to the Turnpike Ground where they were crowned Somerset Senior League champions in and again in In 1967 Street FC moved to their present home, the Tannery Ground, but times were lean and by 1992 they had dropped to division 3. The appointment of Noel O Hare as manager in 1993 saw an upturn in fortunes and successive promotions came in his first 2 seasons. At the end of the 1994/95 season Noel left and Simon White was appointed. Simon left after only 11 games of the season, but the club went on to gain promotion

13 again and reached the final of the League Cup under the guidance of Ken Randall. The following season Simon White returned and led the club to the Somerset Senior League championship title for a record 8th time - and back into the Western League after a 37-year absence. The following season floodlights and a seated stand were both erected and the changing rooms were enlarged. After guiding the club to 4th place and 3rd place finishes in the first two seasons, Simon again left the club mid-way through the campaign. Neil Seymour and Julian Thresher took over the reins, followed by Gerry Pearson and then Alan Hooker, until Simon White was re-appointed at the start of the 2005/06 season and led the club to promotion to the Western League Premier Division at the first attempt. Dan Badman took over in 2011/12 and the following season the team finishing 6th; and went one better in 2013/14 finishing 5th. Season 2015/16 saw the team finish 7th in the league and reach the last four of the Somerset Premier Cup, but at the end of the season Dan stepped down due to work commitments. The committee moved swiftly and appointed ex- Bitton, Bridgwater Town and Paulton Rovers manager Richard Fey to take over and season 2016/17 saw his side challenging all the way for the title with Bristol Manor Farm. In the end, however, the club had to settle for the runners-up spot for only the second time in the club s history. The 2017/18 campaign was the Club s 50th season in the Western League - and was a truly momentous one too! Early results were a little indifferent, but starting on 12th September 2017, Richard Fey s charges completed a sensational run of 26 consecutive league victories that eventually saw the team win the title by fifteen points (falling just one point short of the century) after winning 32 out of their 38 games and scoring 100 goals, thus earning a place in the Southern League for the first time in the Club s history.

18 Match Report - Comfortable Win for the Worthians By Derek Lloyd Highworth Town 4-0 Slimbridge AFC A second successive win for Highworth as goals from captain, Wayne Turk (2), Darren Jefferies and Callum Parsons saw off Slimbridge. Turk put the home side ahead after two minutes, heading home a corner from six yards out. Jefferies doubled the lead on 12 minutes, cutting in from the left and beating Lewis Adams with a low drive. Slimbridge almost reduced the arrears midway through the first half but Connor Johns clawed out an eight yard effort from the top corner. Substitute Frankie Grieveson had a shot blocked by Adams and a couple of further efforts from Jefferies were saved and half-time was reached with Highworth still 2-0 up. A Sean Wood free kick was brilliantly touched onto a post by visiting keeper Adams on 49 minutes but the ball fell kindly for Turk who scored his second of the game. Callum Parsons scored the 4th from 18 yards out with 12 minutes to go to confirm an 8th league win of the season. Manger Jeff Roberts will be happy tonight given that he had several players unavailable today and lost Leon Morrison to a neck injury early on with Matty Grabe also unable to take part having aggravated an injury in the warm up. This allowed EdiJdja Mbunga to make a promising full debut against his former club.

20 Artificial Intelligence or Pitch Perfect by Stuart Fuller The calls for more clubs to install 3G pitches reaches fever pitch every time there is a spell of bad weather in this country but having an artificial surface is not necessarily the answer. During the first few days of March, the 'Beast from the East' delivered snow and freezing temperatures to many parts of the United Kingdom that we had not seen for many years. Public transport ground to a halt, many major roads became unpassable and unsurprisingly, sporting fixtures suffered. At the time of writing three Championship games have already been cancelled, including Sky Sports Live game at Wolverhampton Wanderers as overnight temperatures have dropped as low as -11 in some parts. The Non-League programme has been decimated with just four games surviving from steps 1 to 4 from a total of 140 games due to be played this Saturday. Two of those four (Dover Athletic and Folkestone Invicta) have benefited from their coastal location whilst the other two (Grays Athletic and Worthing) both play their home games on a 3G surface. So you could put an argument forward that 3G's have proved their worth in this instance, with both Grays Athletic and Worthing likely to get bumper crowds due to the lack of other games in the area (many Lewes fans are heading to Worthing for instance rather than sitting at home, whilst I myself am heading to Aveley FC, where Grays Athletic play). But that isn't strictly true. Many other clubs have 3G pitches and have seen their games cancelled. Cray Wanderers, Horsham, Walton Casuals, Merthyr Town, Redditch Town and Romulus among others who use an artificial pitch have seen their games today cancelled whilst in Scotland, every professional side who uses a 3G pitch including Clyde, Alloa Athletic, Montrose and Airdrieonians has seen their games postponed too. Unfortunately, just because you replace grass with a synthetic material, you do not avoid all of the side-effects of the bad weather. An artificial pitch is not simply a big roll of fake grass that is laid like a carpet. There's significant amounts of preparation work that has to happen to the ground itself before you get to that stage. The shock-pad is like an underlay for a carpet. That is the bit that does the hard work and like any underlay, the quality and therefore the longevity of the pitch itself is based on cost - the better shock pad used, the more expensive it is but the more wear the pitch will handle. Once the "grass" is laid then the filler is used - in most instances rubber crumb - which keeps the blades of grass upright and also adds as an additional layer of absorption. The issue at the moment is when snow falls

21 and settles on a 3G you can't simply sweep it off as you will remove the rubber crumb in the process. No rubber crumb means you damage the top layer of the pitch when you play on it. If the snow compacts and freezes and isn't allowed to thaw or be removed, then playing on it will increase the pressure on the shock pad and could damage that. Replacing that would involve completely removing the pitch first - a very expensive job. Whilst some 3G playing surfaces may have been fit for football, the surrounding areas such as terraces, stands, walkways and car parks may not. In the case of Cray Wanderers's game today, at Bromley FC, this was the issue that saw their game postponed. There's very little a club can do to protect these areas from the freezing temperatures - again something that few people factor into their argument as to why clubs should have a 3G pitch. I saw this first hand in December when I visited Airdrieonians for their game with Raith Rovers. The temperatures fell well below zero and whilst the game went ahead on their frosty 3G, the car park was akin to a curling rink and was incredibly dangerous for spectators leaving the ground. The costs in installing a 3G are prohibitive to many clubs. Whilst there are huge benefits aside from being able to use it in bad weather, such as the opportunity to create a community facility and one that produces a regular revenue stream (and allows clubs to save costs on renting external training facilities), they have to find the initial cash to build one. Like many things, costs can be reduced, but a decent 3G pitch will set a club back in excess of 500,000 - hardly small change. There are some grants available from the Football Foundation and Sport England, but not every club is able to qualify for those. And then, of course, there is the issue of the Football League rules. Any clubs that have ambitions of moving up to the professional game in England is thwarted if they have a 3G by the rule, set by the Football League clubs themselves, that does not allow for 3G pitches to be used. No such rule exists for the FA Cup, the Champions League, UEFA and FIFA competitions - in fact every professional league in Europe allows them (including Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales) but England doesn't. So for clubs like Sutton United, Bromley and Maidstone United, challenging currently for the National League Play-offs, they face a dilemma of either dropping out of contention or ripping their 3G pitch up (which in part is the revenue generator that has allowed them to rise up the leagues). Should they do neither and qualify for the Play-offs they face demotion down to the National League South. How is that fair in a sporting sense? Artificial surfaces have their benefits but let's all just remember that they aren't always the answer to the curve-balls that Mother Nature throws at us.

26 HOW THE DIVISON ONE SOUTH LEAGUE TABLE STANDS

27 TODAYS FIXTURES DIVISON ONE SOUTH

28 WHAT THE ADVER SAYS... By Harry Abbott Sports Reporter HIGHWORTH Town manager Jeff Roberts is after a fast start from his side this weekend as they welcome Street to the Save on Tyres Stadium in Southern League Division One South. Town will look to build on the 4-0 demolition of Slimbridge in their previous home game last weekend where they were 2-0 up inside seven minutes and kept their first clean sheet in eight games. The Worthians will be without several firstteam players for Saturday s game as Leon Morrison, Wayne Turk and Jon Else are unavailable, while Toumani Sidibi completes his two-game suspension. Roberts was delighted with his side s performance last time out and is hoping for a repeat on Saturday, but the Town chief knows his side must come out firing from the off if they are to get the better of a physical Street outfit. He said: We ve scored eight goals in the last two games and it was good to get a clean sheet last weekend, especially with the players we had missing. Ash Edenborough and Chris Taylor are back this week, but we re without six others. That leaves us very thin on the ground. We just need to carry on from where we left off. When we went down to Street at the start of the season, I found them to be a very good side very physical, very strong and direct, so it will be another typical Southern League contest. They ve been a bit hit and miss, but it will be tough. We ve just got to go out and get straight at them. Since mid-september, Highworth have developed something of a Jekyll and Hyde run of results as they went six games without a win, then five games unbeaten before a four-game winless run preceded their current two-game win streak. Roberts feels these kinds of patterns are to be expected from a young team that are experiencing this level of football for the first time. He said: If you look at our form, we seem to go on a pattern of five games unbeaten and then we have a bad run and then we have another good run again. Hopefully, we re in the middle of a spell where we ll go on to pick up a few more points and a few more wins. This year is a massive learning curve for us as a club. If we can stay where we are or even progress up the league if we can get into the top 10, then I think it will be a great season for the football club.
