4 ROBERTS RAMBLINGS 12TH JANUARY 2019 Good afternoon and welcome to the staff, players, supporters and officials of Slimbridge for this Evo-stik Southern League Division One South fixture. We hope you enjoy our hospitality and have a safe journey back home after the match. Our visitors today currently sit in 17th place with five wins, four draws and 13 defeats after 22 league games. They were knocked out of Emirates FA Cup by Wantage Town following a replay, but ended Winchester City s interest in the BuildBase FA Trophy, before losing to Melksham Town by the odd goal in five. They then had two sparkling results in the Southern League Challenge Cup, firstly removing Merthyr Town with a 5-1 drubbing and then exacting their revenge on Melksham Town with a 4-0 victory, but finally fell to Cinderford Town after losing 4-2. They have a tough challenge in the Gloucestershire Senior Challenge Cup with an upcoming visit to Cheltenham Town for a place in the semi-final. Slimbridge played in the Uhlsport Hellenic League for many seasons before transferring to the Toolstation Western League in 2013 and after a couple of seasons there, they were promoted to the Southern League and have enjoyed two seasons at Step 4, finishing 18th and 20th respectively. After a lean period of five straight losses, Slimbridge won two and drew one of their last five games, including a creditable victory last weekend against Thatcham Town, taking them above Mangotsfield United, Fleet Town and Barnstable Town in the table. We drew with them in a 0-0 encounter back in August and perhaps should have taken the points but managed to hit a post with an open goal beckoning. We too had a bit of a loss in form, losing four times on the trot before bouncing back with a 4-3 victory at Fleet Town last weekend on a pudding of a pitch. It made things a bit awkward when Toumani (Sidibi) was sent off with 30 minutes to go and I thought Fleet were a very good workmanlike side. They didn t give us any time to put our foot on the ball and play on the floor. The result took that edge off the bad spell we experienced over Christmas, which was tough for us. We will be without a number of regulars this afternoon and it will be a tough challenge for sure and I m expecting one of those games where both teams go for it to try and secure the three points. We ll be bringing in a couple of the young lads who are in and around the first-team and it will be a good challenge for them. After today s match, we re at home again next Saturday when we entertain Street and then it s off to Thatcham Town for our second match against them this season when I m sure that they will want to make amends for the 5-0 thrashing we handed out to them here at SaveOn- Tyres Stadium back in September! Enjoy today s game, thanks for your support & see you in the bar later! Jeff KITCHENS, BATHROOMS, EXTENSIONS AND FULL BUILDS

12 SLIMBRIDGE AFC CLUB HISTORY In The Beginning The Gloucestershire village of Slimbridge is world renowned for its Bird Sanctuary, but in recent years much hard work has gone into making Slimbridge better known in football circles. The Club s history can be traced back to the 1899/1900 season playing in local football at various venues in and around the village. A gap in the records suggests there may have been a couple of seasons when no games were played, and thus, officially, the Club s centenary was celebrated in 2002/03. It was not until 1951 that the current ground at Wisloe Road was acquired, after a former player, Evi Thornhill, bequeathed it to the Club in his Will. For the next forty-odd years the Club were predominantly members of the Stroud and District League with varying degrees of success and failure, except for a period between 1960 and 1968 when they were in the Gloucester Northern Senior League. Point Of Collapse By 1988, a point of collapse approached, but fortunately, a handful of committee members led by Gordon King and Gordon Tudor kept the Club afloat. The following season local businessman Paul Chappell arrived. The Club was stabilised and construction of new changing facilities, to County League standard, were completed. Start Of A New Reign As playing standards improved, the building of a long awaited Social Club commenced in the 1998/99 season. The following year saw the introduction of John Mack, a successful local entrepreneur, as Chairman. In the summer of 2001, Doug Gray was appointed Manager. After achieving the Runners-up spot in their first season in the Gloucester County League, the club were accepted into the Hellenic League. Hellenic Division One West was won by an eleven point margin in 2002/03 and with it, promotion to the Hellenic Premier Division, where a creditable fourth place finish was achieved in 2003/04. In a marvelous season the club also claimed the Hellenic Norman Matthews Floodlit Cup and the G.F.A. Challenge Trophy. Arrival Of Floodlights The summer of 2003 saw the floodlights installed. A pre-season visit from Conference side Forest Green Rovers on 22nd July, produced a then ground record attendance of 427 to witness the inaugural floodlit game at Wisloe Road. A few weeks later on Sunday 24th August, that ground record was beaten at a Bank Holiday Hellenic Premier Division fixture that was part of the 2003/04 annual Ground Hop weekend. Local rivals Shortwood United provided the opposition in front of a crowd of 525. Season 2004/05 again saw a fourth place finish in the Hellenic Premier Division, along with a first entry into the F.A. Vase competition which resulted in a useful run to the third round proper before a 2-1 extra time defeat at Screwfix Western League side Backwell United concluded an enjoyable campaign. Sadly, in the February, Gray stood down after nearly four seasons at the helm of the club. The club started season 2005/06 under newly appointed Manager Doug Foxwell. A first entry into the F.A. cup saw a visit from Wessex League side Wimborne Town. A 1-0 defeat did not dampen the sense of occasion on the first day of the season. A second successful run in the F.A. Vase again came to an end in the Third Round Proper, with a 3-1 defeat at South Midland Premier, Welwyn Garden City. After a record-breaking 64 game season, the team managed a fifth place finish in the Hellenic Premier Division. The club also won the Hellenic Norman Matthews Floodlit Cup and the GFA Challenge Trophy, both for the second time in three seasons. Reserves Make Headway After two successive third place finishes in the Stroud and District League First Division, season 2005/06 saw the Reserve side finally win the title and with it, promotion to the Gloucester Northern Senior League Division Two. This was the same League title that the first team won in season 1998/99 which proved the springboard for five successive first team promotions. Rise To New Heights Season 2006/07 proved the most successful in the Club s history to date, with both the First Team and Reserve side recording League and Cup doubles, with the added bonus of record-breaking

13 F. A. Cup and Vase runs for the senior side as well. In the F.A. Cup, a five match run from the Extra-Preliminary Round finished at Merthyr Tydfil in the Third Qualifying Round. Along the way there were memorable wins against two other Southern Premier sides, 2-1 at Yate Town and 3-1 at home to Chippenham Town. It was six matches in the F.A. Vase before defeat was tasted, the run ending in the Fifth Round Proper at home to the eventual winners, Truro City. In the Hellenic Premier Division, a solid start was established. Due to the Cup runs, and then bad weather, which led to a record number of postponements during the subsequently extended season, half a seasons fixtures had to be played in the final two months. A tremendous effort saw the Club bring the Championship Shield to Wisloe Road, the winning margin being three points over second placed North Leigh. There was a rousing performance in the G.F.A. Trophy Final against Almondsbury Town. A 3-1 victory not only retained the Trophy, but recorded a third success in four seasons in that competition. The Reserve side had an early success in the Gloucester Northern Senior League Cup with a 2-0 win against Division One Tuffley Rovers. This saw confidence rise and they went on to break a Gloucestershire Northern Senior League record in winning Division Two with a Played 30, Won 30 record. Promotion To The Southern League Alongside the playing success, progress in the improvement of facilities allowed the First Team to be accepted into the BGB Southern League Division One Midlands for Season 2007/08, the highest level that the Club have ever operated at. Return To A New Beginning On July 10th 2007 the club decided not to take up the opportunity of playing in the BGB Southern League Division One Midlands for Season 2007/08, instead the club reverted back to the Gloucester Northern Senior League. This meant a big upheaval in the club both on and off the field with the manager Doug Foxwell and several senior players moving on the pastures new, however a loyal band of players stayed on including James Cole taking over as player manager with assistance from long term club captain Leon Sterling. Climb Back Up The Ladder Four promotions followed as the club regained their previous status. The reins where handed over to Leon Sterling, who moved into the Manager's role, joined by Assistant and long time Slimbridge stalwart Freddy Ward. The two have guided the side to a very respectable sixth and fifth place in their first two seasons back in the Hellenic Premier, and will be looking to build on their progress during the coming season. Switching Leagues After three top six finishes in the Hellenic Premier League, The Swans applied for a transfer to the Toolstation Western Premier League, a move approved by the FA in the Summer of This season represents the Club's first season in this league. Return To The Southern League After two seasons in the Toolstation Western Premier League, a third place finish at the end of the 2014/15 season gave the Swans a second opportunity to return to the Southern Football League. This time the club accepted the offer and took their place in the South and West division finishing a credible 18th. Welcome To Thornhill Park At the start of the season prior to our annual freindly fixture with neighbours Forest Green Rovers, the football ground in Wisloe Road was renamed in honour of the gift in 1960 from former Chairman Evi Thornhill of the land the club still occupies to this day. Evi's son, Tony and his wife Margaret were on hand to cut the ceremonial ribbon, and Tony made a short heartfelt speech about how much the renaming meant to him and the entire Thornhill family, and how honoured they were that the football club had recognised their father in this way.

18 Match Report - Highworth Back to Winning Ways By Derek Lloyd Fleet Town 3-4 Highworth Town After four successive defeats, the Worthians got back to winning ways, just, at Fleet Town today. Three first half goals appeared to have secured the points but when the home side got one back in the 3rd minute of added time at the end of the first half the game changed. Darren Jefferies put Highworth 1 up on 9 minutes when Ash Edenborough and TJ Bohane combined down the right with the latter setting up Darren Jefferies to open the scoring. Sam Morris went close for the visitors on 23 minutes before a free kick from Chris Taylor was headed past his own keeper by Lucas ODell-Angba whilst under pressure from Edenborough. Morris made it 3-0 on 40 minutes from close range having been set up by Jefferies and all looked good for the visitors. Fleet pulled one back with a great strike just on half-time by Kofi Halliday. HT 3-1 Highworth Town. It was 4-1 immediately after the break as Ash Edenborough took advantage of a couple of fortuitous ricochets to fire home into an empty net. Two minutes later it was 4-2 as a great cross from the right was converted at the back post by Abdulbasit Rajab. Toumani Sidibe of Highworth was then sent off in the 60th minute. Having not been awarded a free kick for a robust tackle on him, followed by Fleet not returning the ball to Highworth after it had been kicked out, Sidibi's frustration boiled over and he allegedly made comments to the referee which resulted in his second red card of the season. With Fleet pressing forward against the 10 men it was a barrage of crosses into the box from out wide which caused Highworth problems. Two goal line clearances by Rory Sproule and a couple of decent collections by keeper Connor Johns managed to keep the 2 goal lead intact. On a rare break forward, Darren Jefferies fed TJ Bohane in on goal but the home keeper made a great block. Fleet did pull another back in the 84th minute through Enow-Tanyi Onegeh- Obi-Ojong, again following a cross from wide left but the visitors just about did enough to leave with 3 vital points. Sidibi's inevitable suspension and a couple of non availabilities for next Saturday's game v Slimbridge will put pressure upon Jeff Roberts's small squad and it remains to be seen if any new signings can be made to week to bolster the squad.

20 Artificial Intelligence or Pitch Perfect by Stuart Fuller The calls for more clubs to install 3G pitches reaches fever pitch every time there is a spell of bad weather in this country but having an artificial surface is not necessarily the answer. During the first few days of March, the 'Beast from the East' delivered snow and freezing temperatures to many parts of the United Kingdom that we had not seen for many years. Public transport ground to a halt, many major roads became unpassable and unsurprisingly, sporting fixtures suffered. At the time of writing three Championship games have already been cancelled, including Sky Sports Live game at Wolverhampton Wanderers as overnight temperatures have dropped as low as -11 in some parts. The Non-League programme has been decimated with just four games surviving from steps 1 to 4 from a total of 140 games due to be played this Saturday. Two of those four (Dover Athletic and Folkestone Invicta) have benefited from their coastal location whilst the other two (Grays Athletic and Worthing) both play their home games on a 3G surface. So you could put an argument forward that 3G's have proved their worth in this instance, with both Grays Athletic and Worthing likely to get bumper crowds due to the lack of other games in the area (many Lewes fans are heading to Worthing for instance rather than sitting at home, whilst I myself am heading to Aveley FC, where Grays Athletic play). But that isn't strictly true. Many other clubs have 3G pitches and have seen their games cancelled. Cray Wanderers, Horsham, Walton Casuals, Merthyr Town, Redditch Town and Romulus among others who use an artificial pitch have seen their games today cancelled whilst in Scotland, every professional side who uses a 3G pitch including Clyde, Alloa Athletic, Montrose and Airdrieonians has seen their games postponed too. Unfortunately, just because you replace grass with a synthetic material, you do not avoid all of the side-effects of the bad weather. An artificial pitch is not simply a big roll of fake grass that is laid like a carpet. There's significant amounts of preparation work that has to happen to the ground itself before you get to that stage. The shock-pad is like an underlay for a carpet. That is the bit that does the hard work and like any underlay, the quality and therefore the longevity of the pitch itself is based on cost - the better shock pad used, the more expensive it is but the more wear the pitch will handle. Once the "grass" is laid then the filler is used - in most instances rubber crumb - which keeps the blades of grass upright and also adds as an additional layer of absorption. The issue at the moment is when snow falls

21 and settles on a 3G you can't simply sweep it off as you will remove the rubber crumb in the process. No rubber crumb means you damage the top layer of the pitch when you play on it. If the snow compacts and freezes and isn't allowed to thaw or be removed, then playing on it will increase the pressure on the shock pad and could damage that. Replacing that would involve completely removing the pitch first - a very expensive job. Whilst some 3G playing surfaces may have been fit for football, the surrounding areas such as terraces, stands, walkways and car parks may not. In the case of Cray Wanderers's game today, at Bromley FC, this was the issue that saw their game postponed. There's very little a club can do to protect these areas from the freezing temperatures - again something that few people factor into their argument as to why clubs should have a 3G pitch. I saw this first hand in December when I visited Airdrieonians for their game with Raith Rovers. The temperatures fell well below zero and whilst the game went ahead on their frosty 3G, the car park was akin to a curling rink and was incredibly dangerous for spectators leaving the ground. The costs in installing a 3G are prohibitive to many clubs. Whilst there are huge benefits aside from being able to use it in bad weather, such as the opportunity to create a community facility and one that produces a regular revenue stream (and allows clubs to save costs on renting external training facilities), they have to find the initial cash to build one. Like many things, costs can be reduced, but a decent 3G pitch will set a club back in excess of 500,000 - hardly small change. There are some grants available from the Football Foundation and Sport England, but not every club is able to qualify for those. And then, of course, there is the issue of the Football League rules. Any clubs that have ambitions of moving up to the professional game in England is thwarted if they have a 3G by the rule, set by the Football League clubs themselves, that does not allow for 3G pitches to be used. No such rule exists for the FA Cup, the Champions League, UEFA and FIFA competitions - in fact every professional league in Europe allows them (including Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales) but England doesn't. So for clubs like Sutton United, Bromley and Maidstone United, challenging currently for the National League Play-offs, they face a dilemma of either dropping out of contention or ripping their 3G pitch up (which in part is the revenue generator that has allowed them to rise up the leagues). Should they do neither and qualify for the Play-offs they face demotion down to the National League South. How is that fair in a sporting sense? Artificial surfaces have their benefits but let's all just remember that they aren't always the answer to the curve-balls that Mother Nature throws at us.

26 HOW THE DIVISON ONE SOUTH LEAGUE TABLE STANDS

27 TODAYS FIXTURES DIVISON ONE SOUTH

28 WHAT THE ADVER SAYS... By Jonathan Leighfield Sports Reporter JEFF Roberts hopes a second Southern League Division One South win in seven days can rid Highworth Town of the Christmas woes that saw them lose four games in succession. Highworth host 17th-placed Slimbridge tomorrow (3pm) knowing three points could lift them to 12th in the division with Roberts men currently positioned in 13th with 28 points from 22 games. Poor results against Larkhall Athletic, Cirencester Town, AFC Totton and Evesham United over the festive period look to have killed any hopes of Highworth pitching for a late play-off spot, but Roberts insists securing a mid-table finish is key if Town are to build on their promotion from the Hellenic League last season. He said: The conditions of the pitch didn t help us last week (at Fleet Town). It made things a bit awkward when Toumani (Sidibi) was sent off with 30 minutes to go. I thought Fleet were a very good workmanlike side. They didn t give us any time to put our foot on the ball and play on the floor. It was one of those pitches though where we just had to go long. The result took that edge of the bad spell we experienced over Christmas, which was tough for us. We played the likes of Evesham and Totton, it was a bad spell for us. But we must move on and concentrate on Saturday. At the start of the season we said we wanted to stay in the league. If we can finish in that mid-table position this year then we can build on that next year. Meanwhile, Roberts will be without three players tomorrow, including Toumani Sidibi who starts his two-game suspension after being sent off in Town s 4-3 win over Fleet Town last weekend. Sidibi s absence leaves Roberts thin on the ground, but he has faith in his younger players, who he believes are more than capable to step up to the next level. He said: It will be a tough one. We went down their earlier in the season and it will be one of those games where both teams go for it to try and secure the three points. We re a bit tight on numbers, but we ll bring in a couple of the young lads that are in and around the first-team it will be a nice challenge.
