4 ROBERTS RAMBLINGS 6TH OCTOBER 2018 Good afternoon and welcome to the staff, players, supporters and officials of Blackfield & Langley for this Evo-stik Southern League Division One South fixture. We hope you enjoy our hospitality and have a safe journey back home after the match. Our visitors today currently sit in 2nd place with five wins, one draw and one defeat after their first seven league games. They were knocked out of the Emirates FA Cup by Melksham Town, succumbing to a last -minute penalty, but are still in the hunt for the Southern League Challenge Cup after easing past Gosport Borough by the odd goal in seven last Tuesday and the BuildBase FA Trophy and a trip to Yate Town next Saturday after getting past us last week-end at Gang Warily.Talking of which, I believe we deserved more from the game and only poor passing in the final third cost us. We had a lot of possession, but our final pass was always a little bit short or just too long. Blackfield and Langley had three chances to score goals in the first half and they managed to score two. We had to go out in the second half and change something we went more attacking minded to give us that push, but we just got caught at the end on the break. I can t fault the players, just that final bit let us down. If you make mistakes at this level of football you will get punished, and I think that s what happened to us on Saturday. We played some good football in spells and had a lot of possession, but you have to hit the back of the net. We played Salisbury in the Southern League Challenge Cup last Wednesday evening and in an entertaining encounter, we matched our illustrious Premier League counterparts in all positions and we were a little unlucky not to get through after creating three glorious chances, before being knocked out following a penalty shoot-out. After today s match, we are on the road for two Saturday s on the trot, firstly at Evesham United and then at Yate Town. We also have a mid-week opener in between in the Wilts Senior Cup at Chippenham Park who currently sit second-frombottom after only winning one of their opening eight league fixtures. Enjoy the game, thanks for your support & see you in the bar later! Jeff KITCHENS, BATHROOMS, EXTENSIONS AND FULL BUILDS

12 BLAKCFIELD & LANGLEY CLUB HISTORY After playing in the war time Hythe and District League the Club joined the Southampton Junior League and in 1946 won the Division One title and appeared in the final of the Senior Cup losing to NDLC. However, the following season the Club won the Cup and were Southampton League West Division champions. After this with progression in mind, the Club applied to join the Hampshire League and made their debut in Division Three West in the 1950/1 season. Although title winners the following season, the Club did not move into Division Two until 1956/7. They remained in this division for the next four seasons but were relegated at the end of 1959/60. Bad fortune lasted for 15 years as the Club dropped into Division Four, were promoted in 1974/5 after finishing third but dropped back again in 1979/80. Then in 1981/2 the Hampshire League reorganised and Division Four was swallowed up by Division Three and as runners up promotion was secured to Division Two. After three seasons in Division Two, promotion was gained to the top division, overhauling run away leaders, Locksheath, with a last match win at Cowes. In the first season in the top flight the Club finished a credible tenth. In the following seasons the Club established itself as one of the most consistent teams in the league with eleven top six finishes including, three second places and then won the elusive Championship in 1997/8. With the establishment of the Wessex League in 1986/87, the Club recognised that to compete against the best in local football, the long term aim had to be elevation to the new league. With the emphasis for entry into the league being on facilities as much as ability on the pitch, negotiations were opened with Fawley District Council for a long lease on a ground which gave the Club the necessary security to develop it to the required standard. The pitch at Gang Warily was identified and the Council provided a playing surface that is still to this day, the envy of many teams and the enthusiastic Committee set about bringing the ground up to the required standard. Development continues to this day. The best opportunity for promotion came in the Championship year 1997/8 but the funds ran out to complete ground improvements, so second place Moneyfields were promoted. The Club s chance for promotion came two years later - a last match win at West Wight Mayflower earned the third place required and the dream had been realised after 50 seasons of Hampshire League Football. After 5 years in Wessex Division 1 the club were relegated to the new Division 2 in The Club in 2004/5 became only the second club in Hampshire football to be awarded the FA Adult Standard Charter. The 2008/9 season saw success return to the Club with promotion back to the top division of the Wessex League under the guidance of Jon Gittens. Jon continued for a 2nd season finishing the season mid-table. Jon left the club in the early part of the 2010/11 season and Assistant Manager Louis Bell was put in charge with the team eventually finishing in 14th position and 16th in the subsequent season. The Club had in incredible 2012/13 season under the leadership of Ashley Vickers, winning the Sydenhams Wessex Premier league by 10 points, reaching the 4th Qualifying round of the FA Cup, losing 3-0 to Hastings United, and reaching the

13 last 32 of the FA Vase. In stark contrast, 2013/2014 season was the most tumultuous in recent years with a number of changes in playing, coaching and management throughout the season, leaving the club unsettled for the most part. Taking on the manager s role mid-way through the season, Kevin Gibbens, assisted by Chris Farrell, managed to finish a very credible 6th. 2014/15 season started with John Robson taking control of the 1st team who started off brightly but with some injuries and a general failure to score goals, the season didn t quite pan out as planned although the team still finished a credible 5th in the league and were Russell Cotes Cup winners. Glenn Howes took the reins in his managerial debut in 2015/16, ultimately guiding the team to 3rd place behind Salisbury FC, missing out on the 2nd spot to Sholing with a defeat at Fareham Town on the last game of the season. The Watersiders also finished runners up in the Southampton Senior Cup, losing heavily to defending champions, Team Solent, made it to the 3rd round qualifying of the FA Cup, (losing to Maidenhead Utd) and were losing semi-finalists in the Russell Cotes Cup. After another season of going close, Glenn was joined by James Wood and the Club surpassed the previous success of 2012/13, enjoying its most successful season in 2017/18, winning the Wessex Premier Division by one point in a very tight race with Andover Town and benefitted from the restructuring of Step 4 Leagues, gaining promotion for the first time to the Southern League. Last season also saw two appearances at St Marys in both the Hampshire Senior and Southampton Senior Cup finals, unfortunately losing on both occasions to Havant & Waterlooville and Southampton FC respectively. The Club also made a semi-final appearance in the Sydenhams League Cup and equalled the record in the FA Vase by reaching the last 32 but eventually losing to Bracknell Town in a midweek replay. Over the years, the Club has had their fair share of Cup success. In the 1980/90s the Club made six appearances at the Dell in the Southampton Senior Cup to add to the two in the 1940s, ending up as winners in four of them. The last success in 1998, producing a league and cup double. In the 2000 final, the Club suffered the agony of losing 2-1 in a replay to AC Delco after a power failure lead to the abandonment of the first game with 15 minutes to go and with a 2-0 lead.

18 Match Report - Worthians Lose Out in Penalty Shoot-out By Derek Lloyd Highworth Town 0 (4)-(5) 0 Salisbury An excellent game of football at the SAVE ON TYRES Stadium in the CCS Southern League Challenge Cup somehow ended goalless after 90 minutes with the visitors then winning 5-4 on penalties. The match, which was played in an excellent spirit, was an endto-end affair with chances a plenty at both ends throughout. The visitors probably edged the first half with some great defending keeping the Worthians out although Sidibi and Ferguson both went close for the home side. The second half saw Highworth create several half chances with shots from the edge of the penalty area but at the other end Connor Johns made a couple of fine stops to keep the score sheet clean. Salisbury's introduction of Zack Kotwica made life difficult for Highworth as he made numerous runs from midfield but the home side generally coped well. Salisbury did hit the bar from close range near the end but the best chance of the game came in the 95th minute when Ash Edenborough was fed through on goal only for visiting keeper Jake Hackett to make a great block at the forward's feet. The only penalty not converted in the shoot out was by Highworth's Toumani Sidibi whose effort was saved. 136 spectators enjoyed a very decent game and although Highworth were without several players through injury or unavailability the team performance bodes well for Saturday's home league game versus Blackfield & Langley, 3.00 KO.

20 Premier League Football German-Style by Stuart Noel It s 5pm on a beautiful Wednesday evening in early August and the FC Kaiserslautern team bus is slowly maneuvering itself down a lane not really wide enough of a Smart car in the heart of Saarland, South -West Germany. Die Roten Tuefel, or the Red Devils, may have arrived in style but a few hours later they will leave with their forked tails between their legs. Whilst the team who took the 3G surface in Wiesbach may not have been the Red Devils first XI, this was a competitive game and one that would still embarrass the management of one of Germany s founding members of the Bundesliga. Shaun Harvey and the management of the EFL must look longingly at Germany (and Spain) and see how the top flight teams are allowed to enter their reserve sides into the competitive league structure. Of course there are rules around who they can and cannot field, as well as a rule that means they can never be in the same division, but it is accepted here in a way that I doubt it could never be back in England. FC Kaiserslautern s reserve side play in the fifth tier of German football, the Oberliga. Those of you with O-Level German will know that Ober in German means upper, so Oberliga literally means the top league or as we would call it The Premier League (well, until the marketing men took their millions for coming up with EPL). Confused? Yep, me too. Werder Bremen had the highest placed reserve team, last season playing in the Bundesliga III but relegation back in May meant they will be in the Regionalliga along with the stiffs from 18 other Bundesliga I and II clubs. Step down one more level and you will find a host of others including Kaisersluatern II, now playing in the Oberliga Rheinland-Pfalz/Saar along with clubs such as BFV Hassia Bingen, TSV Schott Mainz and today s hosts, Hertha Wiesbach. One way to look at the similarities between the respective step 5 leagues in the English and German footballing pyramids is average attendances. The Conference Premier/National League in England has some clubs who have certainly had better days such as Leyton Orient, Chesterfield and Wrexham but their core support hasn t disappeared as they ve headed down the pyramid. Last season the National League had an average attendance of 2,048 with three clubs (the aforementioned Leyton Orient and Wrexham, plus pro-

21 moted Tranmere Rovers) averaging over 4,000. Compare that to the Oberliga, which had an average of just 289, with only two clubs out of the 14 leagues with average attendances over 1,000 (FC 08 Homburg and SC Borussia 04 Fulda in case you wanted to know). Facilities at this level are probably on a par with England s Step 5 or 6. Hertha Wiesbach s ProWin Stadion was situated in a small valley, with steep hills rising behind the club house and the main stand perfect on a hot, summer s night but treacherous I would imagine come the winter. Their 3G pitch provides a facility for the local community, whilst the club-house was advertising a number of events over the coming weeks. Oh, and being Germany, you could have a beer whilst standing on the hill watching the game, trusted that you wouldn t start a Mexican Wave or some Icelandic Clap. On the pitch it is a different matter the Step 5 teams here in Germany certainly looked technically as good as our National League, if not better. The home side blew the famous visitors aside, scoring three second-half goals as Kaiserslautern wilted in the sunshine (and bizarrely only arrived with two on the bench). The win, lifted the home side to top of the table, with a 100% record after three league games and no goals conceded. There can be few better ways to spend a hot Summer s evening than watching football, beer and sausage in hand and Wiesbach delivered on every level. I wasn t the only one who left with a spring in my step, with the knowledge that David had sort of got one over on Goliath, albeit Goliath s little brother, Bob. Thankfully the 6.30pm kick-off meant that as I headed south-wards towards my hotel for the night, I drove right past (OK, so there was a 2.5km detour) the Sportplatz Papiermühle (or Paper Mill Sportsfield), where the second half between SPV Dillingen and SV Engers 07, also in the Oberliga Rheinland-Pfalz/Saar was just kicking off. The ground wasn t too dissimilar to the ProWin Stadion, with one low-level clubhouse with standing in front. A similar demographic of fan was watching this one, albeit with contrasting fortunes to the first match as unbeaten Engers ran out 4-0 winners. Not a bad evening all being told. Just like there s some real gems in and around the Non-League scene in England, seek and you shall find beauty in the most unlikely of places in Germany too.

28 WHAT THE ADVER SAYS... By Shaun Reynolds Chief Sports Writer HIGHWORTH Town boss Jeff Roberts believes last week s FA Vase loss against tomorrow s Evo-Stik South Division One South opposition Blackfield & Langley will have little bearing on his side s confidence and ability. Highworth face the Hampshire side for a second time in a week when hosting Glenn Howes men at the Elms for their latest league encounter. Five points separate both sides and with Highworth having a game in hand, tomorrow s game presents Roberts men with the perfect opportunity to launch a bid to further promote themselves up the play-off frame. Roberts said: We dropped down a position last week because of our cup game last weekend, but all the teams above us have played a game extra which we re obviously pleased about. Blackford & Langley will provide a tough competition for us. We re at home, the surface will be good even though we ve got the slope. It was a massive pitch at their place on Saturday. We have no complaints about our performance against Blackford & Langley last weekend, it was two faults on our part that cost us the game. Possession-wise we dominated, but you ve still got to hit the back of the net if you re to pick up points. Meanwhile Highworth s FA Vase exit on Saturday wasn t the club s only cup loss this week after Salisbury required a penalty shootout to earn a Southern League Challenge Cup win. Chances came few and far between in the opening half of Wednesday night s game. Salisbury came close on 22 minutes when Fitchett s strike was guided wide before Highworth responded through Toumani Sidibi 10 minutes later, though his effort was also flashed wide. Chances for Dan Fitchett, Aaron Dawson and Pablo Haysham went begging for the visitors while Highworth attempted to get a foothold in the game. Three changes by Steve Claridge made little impact as the game went to penalties. All three opening penalties were converted by both teams, however the pendulum swung in Salisbury s favour when Sidibi s spot kick was saved. George Colson netted to put Salisbury 4-3 up before Dawson kept a cool head to secured Salisbury a 5-4 shootout win - ending Highworth s hopes of silverware.
