4 ROBERTS RAMBLINGS 16TH FEBRUARY 2019 Good afternoon and welcome to the staff, players, supporters and officials of YateTown for this Evo-stik Southern League Division One South fixture. We hope you enjoy our hospitality and have a safe journey back home after the match. Our visitors today currently sit in 2 nd place with 17 wins, five draws and three defeats after 25 league games. After beating Cheddar in the Emirates FA Cup, they went out to Salisbury following a replay and repeated the process in the BuildBase FA Trophy, first beating Blackfield & Langley, but succumbing to Dorchester after a replay, but they were knocked out at the first time of asking in the Southern League Challenge Cup by Swindon Supermarine. Yate Town have been members of the Southern League since getting promoted as runners-up to North Leigh in the Hellenic League in In the season, Yate defeated Newport County (then Conference Premier leaders) 3-1, to qualify for the FA Cup for the first time in their history. Yate played Cheltenham Town in the First Round of the competition in November 2012, losing 3-0. Alongside Slough Town, Yate were the lowest ranked team in the competition that year. Yate Town come to us having won eight of their last ten games, an impressive record, which accounts for their high-flying position in the table and no doubt that they would be top if they had played as many games as current leaders, Blackfield & Langley. We played them back in October, losing by 3-0 but the contest was virtually over by half-time as all the goals came within the first 40 minutes. We did play better in the second period, but the damage had been done with some clinical finishing and a worldy from 35 yards out. After four straight wins, we lost disappointingly to Blackfield & Langley last weekend. We actually played the better football on the day, but two errors and some clinical finishing saw them go into the half time break two up and a very late goal added insult to injury to make for a comfortable scoreline in a closely contested fixture. When we played Yate earlier in the season, we went there with a slightly weakened side and got beaten, so hopefully we can give them a tougher test this time. Our pitch isn t the biggest and the slope might not suit them. We ve got a strong squad back for Saturday too, so hopefully we can give them a good game. I m optimistic that we can spring a surprise. We could do with a few more people coming down to support us now and that s a massive aim for us now to get people coming down to watch us from the local area, Highworth especially. We re trying to improve the ground and the facilities, and I think we could just do with that little bit more support from the locals to help us with that. The ground is starting to get there now, the turnstiles are in, so the facilities are a lot better than they were a few seasons ago and hopefully we can show people how well we can play and give Yate a good game today. After today s match, we finish our February programme with a visit to far flung Cornwall and a game against Bideford and then into March when we firstly host Paulton Rovers on Saturday 2 nd, and then another long trip to the south coast for our first visit to Moneyfields. Enjoy today s game, thanks for your support & see you in the bar later! Jeff KITCHENS, BATHROOMS, EXTENSIONS AND FULL BUILDS

12 YATE TOWN FC CLUB HISTORY Yate Town FC began life as Yate Rovers in 1906, and Rovers won the Glos F.A. Junior Cup in World War One then intervened, and although Rovers reformed after the war, they later disbanded, probably in the early thirties. In season Yate Y.M.C.A. was formed and they entered the Bristol and District Division 5 under the captaincy of Arthur Gould. Goalkeeper Frank Boulton, one of four brothers in this team, later played for Arsenal. The team was promoted to Division 3 at the end of the following season. After the Second World War, they reformed, still known as Yate YMCA, playing in the Bristol and District League and the Avon Premier Combination. Yate YMCA were amongst the founders of the Gloucester County League in 1958 and the following year they dropped the YMCA from their title in favour of Town. A major step forward in the clubs progress occurred in 1983 when they obtained membership of the Hellenic League and moved on to the first step of the non-league pyramid system. Promotion to the Premier Division was soon accomplished when at the conclusion of the 1984/85 season Yate Town finished runners-up behind Pegasus Juniors in Division One. The following season they won the Hellenic Premier League finishing the campaign unbeaten at home. That successful formula continued into the 1988/89 season when they retained the Championship crown, losing just one league game. A second prize was obtained in the shape of the Gloucestershire Challenge Trophy. In the quest for further soccer prestige, Yate Town obtained election to the Southern League, Southern Division in Yate Town moved to their present ground in Lodge Road in 1984 having previously played at Yate Aerodrome ( ) and Sunnyside Lane ( ) to prepare for the higher standard of football. Covered accommodation was erected in 1987 and floodlighting in The 1993/94 season was disappointing as Yate finished second from bottom in the Midland Division. Luckily relegation was avoided but restructuring of the Southern League meant that the club was switched back to the Southern Division after three seasons in the Midland. The 1994/95 season, their first in the Southern Division, saw Yate make a terrible start which lead to long serving manager, Pete Jackson, being relieved of his duties. The appointment of former Bristol Rovers favourites Ian Alexander and Phil Purnell, as Manager and Assistant, led to an immediate upturn in fortunes. The club enjoyed an excellent end of season run which saw them finish in sixteenth position. They again reached the final of the Gloucester Senior Cup losing on penalties after extra time to Cheltenham Town. Improvement continued in the 1995/96 season with a young squad enjoying their best campaign for a long time, finishing in the top half of the Southern League. The club celebrated its Golden Jubilee in season 1996/97. During the 1997/98 close season John Freeguard was appointed Manager but after obtaining just two victories from seventeen games he resigned and was replaced by Martin Durnell, Manager of Yates very successful Youth Team, assisted by Club Captain Danny Iddles. Despite these changes the Club still finished in the basement spot, but as before, relegation was avoided due to the restructuring of the Southern League. The 1998/99 season a young side finished 20th in the Southern League. The 1999/2000 season saw Yate Town return to the Midland Division for the first time for six seasons due to the regionalisation of the Midland and Southern Division into Western and Eastern Divisions. Unfortunately they finished well adrift and were relegated to the Hellenic League. Manager Martin Durnell resigned and was replaced by former players Gary Hewlett and Richard Thompson who became Joint Player Managers. After a poor start to the 2000/01 season Yate Town enjoyed a long run of victories that saw them finish in third place in the league. The following two seasons saw Yate finish third and second behind eventual champions North Leigh. North Leigh did not take up the promotion place available so Yate were again returned to the Southern League level of non-league football. After a poor start to the season, Yate improved and consolidated Southern League status by finishing in sixteenth position. Yate enjoyed their most successful season in They finished Runners-up in Division One West, and secured promotion to the Southern League Premier Division for the first time. Additionally, they won the Glos F.A. Senior Challenge Cup for the first time in their history, beating Bristol Rovers 2:0 in the final at the Memorial Stadium. They had previously defeated Bristol City and Forest Green Rovers en route to the final.

13 Town exceeded all expectations season, their first in the Premier Division. Despite another poor start, they finished in a highly creditable sixth position, and also retained the G.F.A. Senior Cup when beating Cheltenham Town in the Final. In Yate were again challenging for a play off spot for much of the time, but were badly hit by injuries in the final few weeks, which led to a poor run of results, and Town finished in a mid table position. In season Yate continued to establish themselves as a Premier Division Club, and finally finished in an encouraging tenth position. A poor run of results which saw Yate gain only two wins in twenty League matches and slide into a relegation position, led to Richard Thompson being relieved of his duties in February 2009 and Lee Barlass, who had been Richard's Assistant for several seasons, also left the Club. Dave Mogg, formerly Manager at Hallen F.C. and Assistant Manager at Taunton Town and Weston Super Mare was then appointed as Manager. Despite his best efforts, the Club could not climb out of the relegation zone and are now in the South & West Division. The season saw a much changed and relatively inexperienced squad finish in a respectable mid table position. Despite the addition of several experienced players, the season saw little progress being made under David Mogg, and after two years in charge he was replaced as manager by Rob Cousins, initially in a caretaker capacity. Performances quickly improved, and Rob was soon appointed as permanent manager. A string of good performances at the end of last season led to us regaining the Glos. F.A. Senior Challenge Cup, beating Cheltenham Town Reserves 3-2 in the Final, having beaten Bristol City Reserves in the Semi-Final. We again finished in a mid table position in the league. In the season we made a very poor start to the League campaign, although making some progress in both F.A. Cup and F.A. Trophy. Results improved considerably after the first third of the season, although we finished in the bottom half of the table. The season was notable for a superb run in the FA Cup, where we made it into the First Round Proper for the first time. Despite a series of poor results in the League, we excelled in the FA Cup, and victories against Poole Town, Winchester City, Oxford City and North Leigh saw us drawn at home to Conference giants Newport County in the Final Qualifying Round. We were leading 3-1 as the tie approached injury time, but two late goals saw Newport secure a 3-3 draw after an excellent performance. Few people gave us a chance in the replay against a team which eventually gained promotion to the Football League, but a never to be forgotten night saw us fight back from being a goal down to equalise and then two goals in extra time gave us a tremendous 3-1 victory. This amazing performance earned us a trip to neighbouring Football League Club, Cheltenham Town in the First Round Proper, and we again excelled ourselves before losing 3-0. This Cup run was the catalyst for much improved results in the League, and we eventually finished just outside the Play Offs in sixth position. Unfortunately we became a victim of our own success, and the close season saw the departure of most that squad. During the 2013/2014 season, the new look squad acquitted themselves very well. After an inconsistent start, a series of good results saw us briefly threaten to make the play -offs, before we ended the season in a creditable ninth position. We also had another decent run in the FA Cup, before losing to Gloucester City in the third qualifying round replay. The season saw us struggle for consistency, which led to Rob Cousins and Michael Meaker being replaced by Craig Laird, assisted by Rob Boyd in March Several experienced and high profile signings were introduced by Craig for the season, but unfortunately that campaign proved very disappointing, and led to another change in management, with Paul Britton, assisted by John Lester before the start of the following season. Many new, younger players were introduced into the squad throughout the campaign, and by the end of that season virtually a new look young team was in place. There was a disappointing start to last season, however, so several more experienced players joined the club. This led to a vast improvement, and at one time there appeared to be an outside chance of being involved in the play-offs before we ended last season in a comfortable mid-table position.

18 Reserves Match Report - Smash and Grab Victory By Mike Markham Shrivenham Dev 1-3 Highworth Town Reserves Having not played for a couple of weekends, the Reserves faced a tricky local derby away at Shrivenham Development. On a very tricky surface that had obviously been cut up at the weekend, Shrivenham started the better and deservedly took the lead midway through the first half after a bobbling cross was scrambled home at the far post. It was the wake up call the Worthians needed and they duly equalised not long after when a long pass from Harry Ayres set Jamie Sheppard free and he was fouled in the box when through on goal giving Highworth a penalty. Jordan Clark stepped up and coolly sent the keeper the wrong way for the equaliser. The rest of the half was fairly even, and the closest anyone came to another goal was Billy Aldrich hitting the bar with a cross-cum-shot from distance. Half time 1-1. After some harsh words at half time from the management trio on how lacklustre we d been, the boys started the second half in better form. Their pressure finally told when a great run from midfield by Jonah Beer, breaking through the defence from another Ayres pass led to Beer delivering a cross from wide in to Sheppard whose smart swivel and finish nestled nicely in the bottom corner of the net. This had the same affect on Shrivenham as it had on the Worthians in the first half and it was only a super save from Simon Randlesome in the Highworth goal that kept the boys in the lead! The hosts had a real head of steam up at this point and it was only some last ditch defending from Ayres, Axford and lastly Haines, keeping the scoreline intact. Shrivenham also hit the woodwork on two occasions as it was a bit like the Alamo at times, but with just minutes remaining and Shrivenham pressing forward for that elusive equaliser, a long ball was flicked on by debutant Sam Roberts who set Dan Grieve through on goal and he casually slipped the ball past the advancing keeper for 3-1 and complete a real smash-n-grab win for the Worthians, with Shrivenham surely wondering how on earth they didn t get something from the game. The management team told the local press after the game we were lucky tonight but it s the sign of a good side if you can dig out 3 points without being anywhere near your best.

20 V A BLOODY R. by Matt Badcock (Non-League Paper) For years the debate around technology raged. Should football have it? Should it not? Will it help? Will it take away the spontaneity and disrupt the flow of the game? The answers still aren't all that clear. In last year's Russian World Cup there were some decisions where its use made absolute sense. There were others times that left everyone scratching their heads. Essentially it is used in four scenarios. Goals and whether there was a violation in the build-up like an offside or foul. The next is for penalty decisions general fouls aren t reviewable unless it is a direct red card. And the final option is for cases of mistaken identity when yellow or red cards are issued. The system is something everyone is clearly getting used to referees, players and fans. That is a big part of the problem. Having held off for so long, it's like to football powers were so desperate to use it that the process has been completely rushed. Supporters inside the stadium and at home watching on TV don't fully know what is happening. In cricket and rugby, we at least hear the conversation between the officials. In American Football, decisions are literally announced to the crowd. But football too often treats its fans - customers - like a school child with a box of matches. The lack of transparency that masks many areas of the game is the same here. Eventually showing a replay doesn t really cut it. Clips should be shown inside stadiums and we should hear the officials arrive at their verdict. Instead fans in the ground wait for a man with his finger in his ear to make an arm signal. VAR is not something Non-League clubs are going to be worrying about any time soon, if ever. Apart from when it comes to the FA Cup. The system was introduced

21 during last year s competition. Let s be clear. If correct decisions are being reached because of it, then all well and good. But surely there has to be a level playing field. The fact is, not all grounds have it. Take the other weekend, for example. Championship side Sheffield Wednesday were awarded a penalty at Chelsea. VAR was in operation, the decision was looked at and the Chelsea defender clearly won the ball. Penalty overturned and on we go although Wednesday would have felt they should instead have been awarded a corner rather than the drop ball that restarted the game. Last Monday night, Barnet had Brentford on the ropes. Having fallen behind, Darren Currie s side swung the tie back their way with two quick goals from Shaq Coulthirst. But just seven minutes later, Brentford were thrown a lifeline. Referee Andy Madley adjudged David Tutonda to have fouled Ollie Watkins in the box. Replays clearly show there was no contact. It s not even up for debate. Watkins, probably expecting contact, went down untouched. He s since apologised. Despite the game being shown live on BT Sport and replays within seconds showing a clear angle, there was nothing that could be done because VAR was having the night off. Brentford scored, went on to take the lead before Dan Sparkes wonderful free-kick made it 3-3 and booked a replay. It s all Sliding Doors, but who s to say if VAR had been deployed that Barnet wouldn t have gone on to win the game 2-1 and proceed to the fifth round, banking 180,000 while they re at it? There has to be parity across the competition to keeps its integrity. VAR should only come into operation from a certain stage, say, the quarter - finals. Where it is likely most clubs will be in the Premier League and able to cope with what is needed or arrangements can be made. It can t be one set of rules for the fortunate big boys and another for the so-called minnows.

28 WHAT THE ADVER SAYS... By Jonathan Leighfield Sports Reporter He said: When we played them earlier in the season, we went there with a slightly weakened side and got beat 3-0, so hopefully we can give them a tougher test this time. Our pitch isn t the biggest and the slope might not suit them. We ve got a strong squad back for Saturday too, so hopefully we can give them a good game. I m optimistic that we can spring a surprise. And with no game for either Swindon Town or Swindon Supermarine in the town, Roberts is hopeful of seeing a few more fans in attendance this Saturday. HIGHWORTH Town boss Jeff Roberts is optimistic his players can spring a surprise on Southern League Division One South title chasers Yate Town as he welcomes the Gloucestershire outfit to the Save on Tyres Stadium on Saturday. The Worthians had won their previous four games prior to a disappointing 3-0 loss away at leaders Blackfield & Langley last weekend, a defeat that Roberts said was largely of their own making. Breakdowns in communication and individual errors had cost Roberts side two goals before half-time, and the Town chief is keen to avoid such mistakes this time around as his side take on a team that have only tasted defeat three times all season. Roberts does not believe there will be a repeat of the 3-0 defeat his side suffered earlier on in the campaign and is instead confident of an improved showing from his strengthened squad. The Highworth boss wants more locals to come down and give his young side that extra level of support he feels would push them on to success in either this season or next. He said: We could do with a few more people coming down to support us now. That s a massive aim for us now to get people coming down to watch us from the local area, Highworth especially. We re trying to improve the ground and the facilities, and I think we could just do with that little bit more support from the locals to help us with that. The ground is starting to get there now, the turnstiles are in, so the facilities are a lot better than they were a few seasons ago and hopefully we can show people how well we can play and give Yate a good game on Saturday.
