Welcome to Shortwood Des meredith Good Afternoon all, Warm welcome to everyone from Frome today, I hope you had a good journey here and have a safe trip back. Can t really say what I m expecting today as we have been so in and out over the last 4 games it baffles me to see how we can play so well and then 3 days later we put in a performance that I can only described as embarrassing!!!! Hopefully we have put a few things right in the short space of time we have had during training this week and we give ourselves something that we can build on and give us that selfbelief back again quickly, a win today would be great, but whatever the result we need a performance today to get us back on track. Hopefully by the next time I chat again we will have news on 2-3 signings that will give us more competition for places within the squad! Thanks Des

Frome TOWN History Frome Town, known at the Robins, were formed in 1904 and played in the Wiltshire Premier League. Early success came in the form of three Somerset Senior League Championships in between 1906 and 1911, whilst in between the Wiltshire League Championship was won in The Club reached the Fifth Qualifying Round of the FA Cup in under the old format of the competition, which was today s equivalent of the Third Round proper losing 4-1 at Southport Central, in front of a crowd of 3,366. Frome entered the Western League in 1919 and immediately became Division 2 Champions while the Somerset FA Senior Cup was won in successive seasons & & for a third time in Frome have always played at Badgers Hill and the ground held its biggest gate in 1954 when 8,000 spectators saw Leyton Orient win 3-0 in the FA Cup First Round Proper. In the same season promotion was gained to Division One of the Western League & were beaten finalists in the inaugural Western League Cup. Promotion was gained back into the Western League after a spell in the Wiltshire League again in where the club remained until Success was gained in the Somerset Premier Cup in with victory over Yeovil Town in the final and the cup was shared by the same two teams in Frome s greatest triumph came in when the club won the Western League. The Championship was secured by losing only once in the last 32 matches. The League Cup followed in Another vintage year followed in with victories in both the Somerset FA Premier Cup and the Western League Cup, plus runners-up in the league. Following those heady days, Frome flirted all too often with relegation from the Premier Division, and were relegated in and the Club spent several years in the lower reaches of the First Division. The Club was re-structured off the field in but despite the ground being upgraded unfortunately success on the field did not follow with a re-structure of the league saving the Club from relegation into County football. Frome improved rapidly and after finishing third continued upwards as they won promotion back to the Western League Premier Division after a six year absence the following year & also reached the final of the league cup. With Frome struggling to win at home during the 2003/04 season the Club turned to the help of a local White Witch, Titania Hardie. This move brought huge media interest from all over the World. It worked immediately and they went on a magnificent run that saw them go on to finish 3rd in the league. The season saw the Club celebrate their centenary & events on the field saw the Robins reach the Quarter-Finals of the FA Vase before eventually losing 3-0 at Jarrow Roofing. A seventh, third and fourth placed finish saw the club continually improving and then runners-up spot in secured promotion into the Southern League for the first time in the Clubs history. The Somerset Premier Cup was also secured with a 3-1 win over local rivals Paulton Rovers. After a poor start to life in the Southern League and a quick change of manager Frome went on an incredible unbeaten run and finished the season in sixth place and just three points from a play-off place. 12 months later and Frome beat Sholing 1-0 in the play-off final to secure promotion to the Southern Premier Division. The summer of 2011 also saw the Club receive the prestigious FA Charter Standard Community Club status and, in 2012, after a great first season in the Southern Premier Division the Club were awarded the title of Community Club of the year for Somerset and then also picked up the regional award that took them into the national final. Over the last few seasons the Robins have retained their league status while also finishing as runners-up in the Southern League Cup and the Somerset Premier Cup. 2016/17 was our most successful league season to date with the Club finishing in a respectable 8th place in the Southern League Premier division with our highest points total.

THE HISTORY OF SHORTWOOD UNITED Shortwood United Football Club was formed in 1900 and since then have played at 4 different grounds, Nailsworth Playing Field, Table Land, Wallow Green and finally at our current ground, Meadowbank. The club has been at Meadowbank since 1972, and includes an all weather training area opened by the late Ted Croker. Gradual improvements over the years culminated in a major enhancement in 2009 to meet ground grading criteria for any future promotions. League football was commenced in the Stroud League where following continued success during the 1970s promotion was gained to the Northern Senior and then the Gloucestershire County League.Promotion to the Hellenic league was achieved in 1981 only to be relegated in our first season but finishing runners up the following year ensured promotion straight back. In 1983 we won the Hellenic Division One Cup and GFA Trophy and in the following year won the Hellenic League. It was a further six years until success was realised again when the treble of League winners, GFA Trophy and Stroud Charity Cup was completed. The 2007/08 season started a resurgence in Shortwood s fortunes in finishing 5th in the league and winning the supplementary cup, defeating Ardley 4-2 in the final. The subsequent season pushed our success even further when following a good run in the FA Cup and semi finalists in the League Cup, we pressed the eventual Champions Hungerford to the final day of the season where we lost out on goal difference after amassing 99 pts and scoring 99 goals. Shortwood s fine form continued into the next season when they again finished second in the league to Almondsbury, and runners up in the GFA Trophy again to Almondsbury, had good FA Cup and Vase runs and reached the final of the Floodlit cup. Having lost the away leg 3-0 to Reading Town they produced one of the most exciting comebacks and entertaining matches ever seen at Meadowbank where the score remained at 0-0 till the 67th minute when the deadlock was broken and Shortwood ran out 5-0 winners (AET). Shortwood s league campaign in 2011 was a disappointment by their own high standards, but more silverware was added in the shape of the GFA Trophy after a 1-0 win over Tuffley Rovers in the final season, however, was pivotal in the Club s history! Not only did they reach the quarter final of the FA Vase, they also reached the final of the Hellenic League Floodlit Cup and the GFA Trophy Final. Most important was their league position where they finished 2nd by 1 point behind Oxford City Nomads. With Nomad s not applying for promotion, and with Shortwood filling all the relevant criteria, they were promoted to the Southern League for the first time in their history! The season was again a successful one. Following a disappointing early exit from the FA cup the club had a good run in the FA Trophy including a

magnificent away victory at premier league side Weymouth on the way. In their first season in the Southern League they finished a creditable eighth position. The season saw Shortwood progress further in the FA Cup than ever before! Early wins over Egham and Aylesbury put them up against Conference South outfit Dorchester and a 1-0 away win, and a further 1-0 win at Didcot put them into uncharted waters of the fourth qualifying round where they drew Conference side Aldershot at Meadowbank. A late, but deserved, equaliser gave them a replay and a heroic 2-1 win sparked wild celebrations. A home draw pitted Shortwood against League 1 side Port Vale in front of a record crowd of 1,247 plus a live television audience courtesy of BT Sport. Shortwood bowed out but with the plaudits their cup run earned ringing in their ears. The league season was also highly successful with a sixth placed finish, one point outside the play-off positions failed to reach the heights of the previous season with many players moving on to higher things but for most of the season a play-off place looked possible until a decline in form towards the end of the season resulted in an 11th place finish continued Shortwood s continued stability in the Southern League as they finished the season 7th in the table with 78 points and the end of the season saw the end of an era as joint Manager John Evans retired after 20 seasons involvement with Shortwood and the club movedforward with Alex Sykes now in sole charge Was a strange season with the Wood exiting the FA Cup and the FA Trophy at the first hurdle and showing inconsistent league form but despite that they managed to finish a more than respectable 9th. Paul Des Meredith took over the management reins at the start of season

Match Report Southern League South, West division Defensive Errors Cost Wood Shortwood United 2 Paulton Rovers 3 Shortwood will be disappointed to have essentially presented Paulton with all three of their goals on a stormy afternoon at Meadowbank. Paul Meredith said, Once we settled we played some nice football and scored two very good goals, but we are becoming the masters of our own downfall, which we need to put right immediately. In the last two games we have conceded six goals and we have gifted three today and two last week. If we can put right the basic errors, then the results will match the performances. With Forest Green having recalled Harry Pickering at 24 hours notice Will Pedrick stepped in between the posts. Sam Taylor has also returned to the club, ironically from Paulton. Paulton took the lead with six minutes played after David Sims was pushed over by Alex Kibble in the penalty area, with James Byrne converting the spot kick, sending Will Pederick the wrong way. Two minutes later Shortwood equalised when Joe White fired into the net from the edge of the box, following some nice interplay between Liam Meredith and Jack Freeman, who assisted the goal. With thirty-two minutes played, the hosts took the lead; Jordan Morris squared to Freeman, who, leaving three defenders in his wake, curled the ball into the bottom corner with his weaker right foot. Another quick reply saw Paulton equalise six minutes later when Sims shot was saved by the feet of Pederick, but Tyrone Tucker- Dixon was able to bundle in the rebound. It s fair to say that in the second half neither team reached anywhere near the level they had in the first period, but Paulton controlled the game after the restart, a combination of sloppy Shortwood passing and the strong wind being in Paulton s favour helping the away side play most of their football in the Shortwood half. Despite this, Paulton did not create many clear chances through their own play, but could rely on another Shortwood error to present them with the equaliser. It came on sixty-six minutes, when Jack Ball finished into an open net following Ashley Davies inaccurate back-pass to Pederick, with the keeper s touch only keeping the ball in for the Paulton striker. Eleven minutes later, Ryan Meredith gifted the ball to Mario Mateus, who found Joe Hillard, but his shot from six yards was well saved by Pederick. Shortwood finally threatened the Paulton goal again in the eighty-ninth minute, with substitute Yesh Lomotey latching on to Ryan Meredith s long ball, but Lomotey s left-footed shot was pushed away by keeper Hannah. MOTM: Jack Freeman Team: Pedrick, Marks, Thwaite, Meredith R, Davies, Kibble, Taylor (Hawes 84), Freeman, White, Lomotey 76), Meredith L, Morris

Match Report Southern League South, West division Wood Shocker! Bishops Cleeve 4 Shortwood United 0 Bishops Cleeve got their first win of the season on Tuesday evening against a hapless Wood side. Wood were out battled and out run by a side that appeared to want the result more and with a little more composure the hosts might easily have doubled the scoreline. Wood s passing was abysmal and time after time they presented Cleeve with the ball in dangerous areas. Wood only mustered one meaningful effort in the whole 90 minutes and there was little of the spirit shown in other games. Manager Paul Meredith commented: Home truths have been said and they know to a man where they stand and now we will see what happens! Cleeve took the lead after only 3 minutes. Kennedy had a free header and although Pedrick kept it out there was a massive goalmouth scramble before Ben Tunnicliff forced the ball home. Cleeve dominated and harried and Wood struggled to get the ball out of their half but Kibble shaved the outside of the post with Woods only real shot after 18 minutes. Watts forced Pedrick into a good save and time after time Wood set up chances for Cleeve to get forward with sloppy passing. Joe White broke down the left and his low cross was just taken off Liam Meredith s boot for a corner early in the second half but that was a rare foray and Cleeve continued to press forward and Wood were unable to cope and if anything got even sloppier! The inevitable second goal came after 65 minutes when Watts low cross was fired home into the bottom corner by Joe Bates. Things went from bad to worse as Kennedy was a given a free close range header after 77 minutes for 3-0 and Wood s misery was complete minutes later when Paul Ireland turned in a low free kick to the near post. It could have been even worse and Wood have got to have a good look at themselves or they will be facing a very long and hard season. Team: Pedrick, Marks, Thwaite, Meredith R, Davies, Kibble (Lomety 65), Taylor, Freeman (Hawes 67), White (Aliu 70), Meredith L, Morris

WHEN YOU SEE RED, ARE YOU SURE IT S NOT GREEN, OR BLACK? NORMAL VISION Approximately one in 12 men inherit colour blindness. It s carried on the X-chromosome, so only one in 200 women inherit the condition. It can be a real issue in football, whether you re watching, playing, managing or officiating. Imagine not being able to tell the difference between kit colours and how that would affect you, your teammate or your child. COLOUR-BLIND SIMULATION (PROTANOPIA) There are three types of colour blindness and myriad colour combinations which cause problems. The common perception that colour-blind people only confuse reds and greens is a myth. The FA has been working closely with UEFA and specialist organisation Colour Blind Awareness to highlight the issue. The intention is to positively influence decision-makers at every level of the game and improve the experience of colour-blind people whatever their involvement in football. This work has seen the production of a comprehensive guidance booklet. You can read and download it at And please visit the Colour Blind Awareness website: colourblindawareness.org for ways you can help maximise awareness. Together, let s make sure football s future is FOR ALL.
