Barnstaple Town History Founded in 1904 as Pilton Yeo Vale, the club entered the North Devon league. They were founder members along with Ilfracombe, South Molton, Pilton Social Barnstaple Y.M.C.A, Braunton and Bideford. Their first ever league Match was on 1st October 1904 when they played Ilfracombe at Pilton Park and were defeated 4-2. The club changed it s name to Barnstaple Town at the end of the season, and continued in the North Devon League, Devon & Exeter League and then the South Western League. When the Western League was reformed after the Second World War, Barnstaple Town entered two teams, one in division 2 and a reserve side in division 3. The early 1950 s were one of the club s most successful times under the management of Arthur Coles. In 1953, Barnstaple won the Western league First Division Championship but only after a nail biting climax to the season with everything depending on the results of matches being played on the final day of the League Season. On that day, Barnstaple Town beat Dorchester Town 6-1 and their challengers for the title, Street won 2-1 at Well City. That left the sides level on points and when the goal average was calculated Street had 2.07 and incredibly Barnstaple had 2.08.Rumour has it that most of the 3,000 crowd that watched Barnstaple beat Dorchester stayed behind at Mill Road after the match to await the Street result. Barnstaple Town also beat Plymouth Argyle in the final of the Devon Pro Cup at Home Park that season, but sadly Coles moved on to Weymouth and the club never had quite the same success again. Cameron Buchanan, the former Wolves and Bournemouth player, local lads Fred Smale and Ray Smith, Bill Johnson formerly of Grimsby Town, Noel Peyton, the ex Leeds United and Eire International, John Hancock formerly with Exeter City and ex Barnsley and Doncaster Rovers player Lol Chappell all tried to revive Barnstaple s fortunes from the managers seat but with no great success. Player Manager Charlie Sells, who had been with Exeter City, built up the club in the 1970 s followed by the former Andover keeper Trevor Morris and then Brian Perks. Perks left Mill Road for Bideford during the season of 1979/80 and under the guidance of joint managers Brian Hill and Dave Baglow, Barum went on to win the Western League Championship for the second time, winning by one point from AFC Bournemouth Reserves. That title went virtually unnoticed as there was a printers strike at the time and no newspapers were printed. Richard Gray, the former Falmouth Town player, took over the following season and brought some success to the club although they never won the title. A couple of seasons later he left after a disagreement with the club, and after a succession of managers Town lost their Premier status in 1989/90. Brian Hill was again appointed manager to put Town back in the Premier Division and after 3 seasons in the wilderness won the First Division Championship in 1993/94 in fine style scoring more goals and recording

Barnstaple Town History continued more points than ever before. Jimmy Hargreaves, Eddie Kelly, Phil Lloyd, Mark Jenkins and John Hore have all tried the manager s seat since but all without success. Jeff Evans was appointed manager in 2002 and along with his assistant Peter Buckingham guided the club to the final of The Devon Bowl where they were narrowly beaten by Tiverton Town. The following season Peter Buckingham took over as sole manager and Barum finished in seventh place in the league, their highest finish for many a season. During the 2008/09 season Owen Pickard took over the manager s seat for his first taste of management and was able to save the club from what looked like certain relegation at the Christmas period of the season. Owen Pickard left at the end of the season and the team is now lead by Dave Griffiths and former second team manager Terry Chapple. With the club now working within their means Town are now fielding a much younger side with many of their players experiencing Western League football for the first time. Barnstaple remained in the Premier League until the end of the 2012/13 season when they were relegated to Division One the first time in their history that they had finished at the bottom of their division. The gloom surrounding Mill Road was to be shortr lived as in the December of 2013 the club appointed the joint management team of Barry Yeo and Karl Baggaley and the rest, as they say, is history. Building a squad where, on occasions, all eleven players on the field were born in Barnstaple surely a record that not many teams at any level of football would be able to equal, the managers turned the 2013/14 season around and finished a creditable 3rd. In their first full season in charge, 2014/15, the club returned to the Premier Division by winning the First Division title for the 3rd time in its history. Their total of 100 points, 128 goals scored and a goal difference of 101 were among 15 club records set during the year, in addition to reaching the final of the Les Phillips Cup for the second time. 2015/16 was to be equally successful. After an average start the team went on two long unbeaten runs which saw them finish as runners up in the Premier Division, missing out on back to back titles by just 3 points, but securing the coveted prize of promotion to the Southern League Division One South & West. This would see them playing at the highest level in the club s history the biggest step the club had taken since joining the Western League in At the end of 2016/17, having secured Southern League football for a second season with a 17th place finish, the management duo stood down and as is often the case in these situations, most of the players also left for challenges elsewhere. Richard Pears left Exmouth Town and took over as manager during the summer and takes Barnstaplke Town into 2017/18 with virtually a completely new squad.

THE HISTORY OF SHORTWOOD UNITED Shortwood United Football Club was formed in 1900 and since then have played at 4 different grounds, Nailsworth Playing Field, Table Land, Wallow Green and finally at our current ground, Meadowbank. The club has been at Meadowbank since 1972, and includes an all weather training area opened by the late Ted Croker. Gradual improvements over the years culminated in a major enhancement in 2009 to meet ground grading criteria for any future promotions. League football was commenced in the Stroud League where following continued success during the 1970s promotion was gained to the Northern Senior and then the Gloucestershire County League.Promotion to the Hellenic league was achieved in 1981 only to be relegated in our first season but finishing runners up the following year ensured promotion straight back. In 1983 we won the Hellenic Division One Cup and GFA Trophy and in the following year won the Hellenic League. It was a further six years until success was realised again when the treble of League winners, GFA Trophy and Stroud Charity Cup was completed. The 2007/08 season started a resurgence in Shortwood s fortunes in finishing 5th in the league and winning the supplementary cup, defeating Ardley 4-2 in the final. The subsequent season pushed our success even further when following a good run in the FA Cup and semi finalists in the League Cup, we pressed the eventual Champions Hungerford to the final day of the season where we lost out on goal difference after amassing 99 pts and scoring 99 goals. Shortwood s fine form continued into the next season when they again finished second in the league to Almondsbury, and runners up in the GFA Trophy again to Almondsbury, had good FA Cup and Vase runs and reached the final of the Floodlit cup. Having lost the away leg 3-0 to Reading Town they produced one of the most exciting comebacks and entertaining matches ever seen at Meadowbank where the score remained at 0-0 till the 67th minute when the deadlock was broken and Shortwood ran out 5-0 winners (AET). Shortwood s league campaign in 2011 was a disappointment by their own high standards, but more silverware was added in the shape of the GFA Trophy after a 1-0 win over Tuffley Rovers in the final season, however, was pivotal in the Club s history! Not only did they reach the quarter final of the FA Vase, they also reached the final of the Hellenic League Floodlit Cup and the GFA Trophy Final. Most important was their league position where they finished 2nd by 1 point behind Oxford City Nomads. With Nomad s not applying for promotion, and with Shortwood filling all the relevant criteria, they were promoted to the Southern League for the first time in their history! The season was again a successful one. Following a disappointing early exit from the FA cup the club had a good run in the FA Trophy including a

magnificent away victory at premier league side Weymouth on the way. In their first season in the Southern League they finished a creditable eighth position. The season saw Shortwood progress further in the FA Cup than ever before! Early wins over Egham and Aylesbury put them up against Conference South outfit Dorchester and a 1-0 away win, and a further 1-0 win at Didcot put them into uncharted waters of the fourth qualifying round where they drew Conference side Aldershot at Meadowbank. A late, but deserved, equaliser gave them a replay and a heroic 2-1 win sparked wild celebrations. A home draw pitted Shortwood against League 1 side Port Vale in front of a record crowd of 1,247 plus a live television audience courtesy of BT Sport. Shortwood bowed out but with the plaudits their cup run earned ringing in their ears. The league season was also highly successful with a sixth placed finish, one point outside the play-off positions failed to reach the heights of the previous season with many players moving on to higher things but for most of the season a play-off place looked possible until a decline in form towards the end of the season resulted in an 11th place finish continued Shortwood s continued stability in the Southern League as they finished the season 7th in the table with 78 points and the end of the season saw the end of an era as joint Manager John Evans retired after 20 seasons involvement with Shortwood and the club movedforward with Alex Sykes now in sole charge Was a strange season with the Wood exiting the FA Cup and the FA Trophy at the first hurdle and showing inconsistent league form but despite that they managed to finish a more than respectable 9th. Paul Des Meredith took over the management reins at the start of season

Match Report SL S&W 28 th FA January Trophy 2017 Pride in Defeat AFC Totton 2 Shortwood United 0 East Thurrock United 3 Shortwood United 1 Shortwood excellent run in the FA Trophy came to an end at Vanarama National League south outfit East Thurrock United on Saturday but the young Wood side should be proud of their performance and manager Des Meredith summed it up nicely. There were massive positives to be taken out of the game. The players gave everything and did exactly what we asked them to do. They can be proud of how they performed and if we can carry all we did today into the league programme in December the results will take care of themselves A nightmare 6 hour journey with massive traffic delays was hardly the ideal preparation and the players had little time to prepare but in spite of this made the brighter start. After 7 minutes a Joe White cross to the far post was met by the head of Tristan Haswell and Thurrock keeper Harry Wright did well to keep out the header and needed fast reactions to gather the ball before Haswell could knock home the rebound. Wood always looked good going forward and the Wood defence coped well with balls down the middle but Thurrock s Agyemang always looked dangerous down the left flank. Burton made a fine save to keep out a deflected Richardson shot and Thwaite made a fine block to deny Higgins. Man of the Match Burton made a tremendous double save to deny Higgins and Agyemang as Thurrock turned the screw but when Wood could break they continued to look dangerous and Morris ran tirelessly and Taylor seemed to be everywhere. White was narrowly wide with a 20 yarder but East Thurrock finished the half with Higgins heading over when it looked easier to score. In the opening moments of the second half Taylor s pass to Morris was inches away from putting the striker in before Shortwood conceded a penalty for a tackle by Thwaite on Higgins and the Thurrock man shot home from the spot. When Thurrock doubled the score after 54 minutes when Harris shot home from 18 yards Wood might have folded but they continued to fight for every ball and could have scored when Morris got away down the flank and his low cross found Taylor but the Wood man could not keep his shot down and the ball went over. Burton again made a good save to deny Harris and Freeman, who had run himself into the ground, was replaced by Will Hawes. Ecpetita made it 3-0 after a fine run and shot but still Wood would not give up and finally in the last minute scored the goal they richly deserved. Chris Burns played the ball into White who was then tripped as he turned. Will Hawes smashed the penalty past Wright to give the young Wood team some consolation and when the whistle blew the rich applause from both sets of fans would have given them rich encouragement for the battles ahead. 19 Met Before SL S&W Southern 28League th January South West Division 2017 Wood Finish with a Win! AFC Totton Shortwood 2 United Shortwood 1 Barnstaple United Town 0 0 April 2016 Andy Hoskins was delighted after Wood beat a useful Barnstaple outfit at Meadowbank on Saturday. We didn t want the season to just fizzle out and I am really happy with 3 wins on the spin and two clean sheets! The spirit we have shown has been amazing. Really pleased for Jack Freeman for his goal and he is a real prospect and Steve Davies has shown in the last few games what a player he is but the man of the match today was Chris Withington again. Shortwood s football was delightful at times and they sprayed the ball about and the only thing lacking was the final ball or the margin of the victory may well have been greater but credit must also be given to Barnstaple who fully played their part and with a little luck, or more composure, might have got a point. The victory however belonged to the Wood and they finished 9th in the table and finished the season with a smile on their faces. In the 5th minute Town keeper Oliver miskicked the ball straight to Morford who was taken by surprise and could only knock the ball straight back to him but it was not long before Shortwood took the lead with a terrific goal. Wood built from the back and when the ball reached Withington he still had a lot of work to do. Beating two players on the right flank he cut in before laying the ball back to Jack Freeman. The young midfielder held of a challenge and fired crisply into the bottom corner. It could have been two just a minute later as Davies raced through but Oliver just got enough to turn the ball round the post. Slowly but surely Town got back into the game and Lee Francis fired a good chance over and both sides played some excellent football. Davies fired a curler just wide but Wood had an escape when Turner hit the Wood bar from 20 yards and the same player had an effort ruled out for off side. The second half was even and was played in a great spirit as both sides swapped chances. Turner scuffed a shot to Langley from close range and Freeman tested Oliver. Copp fired a cross shot across the Wood six yard box with no one able to get the vital touch and Oliver denied Morford as he raced onto a Meredith through ball. Morford then laid the ball back to Humphreys who fired over but another goal would not come. When the final whistle both sides were applauded from the field by the supporters who had enjoyed the game and the warm sunshine. Team: Langley, Withington, Bennett, Lewis, Peare, Hancock (Low 56),Davies, Humphreys N, Freeman (Mendes 87), Price (Meredith 66), Morford
