3 From the Directors Box Good afternoon and a warm welcome to Cuthbury to our visitors from Taunton We extend our hospitality to the visiting officials, players, staff and supporters, and hope you enjoy your time with us and have a safe journey home. We also welcome match sponsor Loadpoint Precision Engineering, and our main sponsor Coleman Insurance - your support is most appreciated. It s been a busy couple of weeks since I last wrote in the Salisbury programme. Firstly, it was great to see such a large crowd over 700 against Salisbury and both teams put on great performance. As I deal with the finances I was especially pleased with the crowd and whilst it all went smoothly on the day it doesn t happen by chance so thank you to all the helpers and volunteers for their efforts. Since the Salisbury game we sneaked a late win away at Mangotsfield before of course winning the Dorset Senior Cup against Shaftesbury with a com prehensive and professional 7-0 win. We last won the tournament when most of the team were in nappies in 1997, so it was great to see us lift the trophy after so many years. Having beaten higher league opposition in the last 2 rounds the boot was on the other foot, but once Billy Maybury scored his latest free-kick to put us one up, we were always in control. I ve mentioned Toby Holmes in a couple of my recent programme notes and without making this the Toby Holmes column I must congratulate him on breaking the Wimborne goal scoring record for a single season. I mentioned in the Salisbury programme how close he was and so he duly took care of business with a hat trick against Salisbury to break the record (and another hat trick his eighth! against Shaftesbury) 54 and counting with games still to go! However, I m sure Toby would be the first to admit he is lucky enough to have an amazing supply line, and so it s worth acknowledging the input of both Lukes in particular. Luke Burbidge has provided a staggering 31 assists (as well as 9 goals) with Luke Holmes also contributing a hefty 18 assists. I ve mentioned previously that plans for next season are already taking place and in addition to the earlier signings for next season of Gerard and both Lukes, I m pleased to say we ve also agreed terms with Mr Versatile : Billy Maybury who at 24 has already racked up 250 games for the club. Plus, we ve also secured Toby Holmes for next season. We re delighted to have both with us for another season. In Toby s case some people may be surprised he s re-signed so early given his goal scoring feats won t have gone un-noticed further up the football pyramid, but I think Toby won t mind me saying that he really enjoys his football here which is a key consideration. Of course, if an amazing opportunity came along in the summer for Toby giving him the chance to play full time football then we would do the right thing and help make that happen for him. Finally, congratulations to today s opponents Taunton Town on gaining promotion and securing the title last week. They ve had a fantastic season and have still only lost once in the league good luck to them in the Premier Division next season. Enjoy today s game.

5 From the Dugout Good afternoon everyone, and welcome to our league game v Taunton Town. I would like to welcome the players, staff and supporters of Taunton to Wimborne for the game. Our last home game on Easter Monday against Salisbury was a great occasion, not only did we get a super crowd to watch, but a result and performance that the lads thoroughly deserved. We then travelled to Mangotsfield last Saturday where we came up against strong opponents, but were again able to find a result when things were getting tough. Tuesday then saw us play in the Dorset Senior Cup Final against Shaftesbury. What a night - to win a cup final 7-0 and to be dominant throughout was a brilliant effort by the lads. It has been a while since we have won the trophy and for us to beat Dorchester and Poole along the way was an achievement in itself. The atmosphere at the game was fantastic, and I would like to thank all our supporters for turning out to see us lifting the trophy. I would also like to thank Gus Phillips for organising the mascots on the evening. It was wonderful to see our youth players from the different age groups lined up with the players prior to kick off. We enter today s game full off confidence and belief which is what we will need against the Champions of our league. Taunton have shown themselves as worthy champions with dominant performances and results throughout the season, and we wish them well in Southern Premier next season. Our meeting only a few weeks ago threw up lots of emotion from nearly losing the game in the 90th minute to rescuing a draw in injury time. With 5 games to go we must all remember that the challenge was to beat last seasons 11th place finish. We are on course for that but still have work to do with the pack still so tight below us. I know the lads are desperate to finish on a high and they will keep fighting to the end. Enjoy the game. 7 From the Dressing Room Hi, and welcome to this afternoon s game against Taunton. The Peacocks won our league with 5 games to go, being unbeaten on their travels, which shows what a good side they are. We had a terrific 3-3 battle with them at their place last month, and I m sure both teams will be looking to go one better this afternoon. Let s hope none of our team get shown a red card! There s 3 games for me to talk about. I ll start with that great 4-2 win over Salisbury on Easter Monday in front of a crowd of over seven hundred. And the boys thrive on playing in front of a crowd like that. As always we had a game plan, and we d put the work in in the days leading up to the game. They took the lead with a cracking header above Gerard s head, I don t think he even had time to get his hands up. We equalised through Toby s penalty, although he had a bit of help from their keeper. I thought it was a pen as the ball hit their lad s hand before going on to hit his chest, which he kept showing the ref. We hit them with two great counter-attacks to go 3-1 up, but it did get a bit nervy when Owen Howe pulled one back, so getting the fourth brought relief. When our violinists are on their game, we re a match for any team. Mangotsfield is a tough place to go, it s never an easy game, and so it proved last Saturday. They ll feel hard done by with us sneaking a last-minute winner, to grab our first Southern League points there, but that s football. The boys have had so few off days this season, but they kept going, and were on top for the last quarter. Then on Tuesday it was Cup Final night, and what a great one it was for the Club. Given our recent record against Wessex League sides it was a mental battle as well as a football one. But so many of the boys love playing on that surface where there s such a true run of the ball. It was great to have so many youngsters from the Youth teams there. They and their coaches will have enjoyed the way the boys moved the ball about. I m told the pre-match handshakes went on for quite a while, with the dignatories shaking players and mascots hands, and then all the players and mascots doing the same. In the game, once we d scored the first, the boys really settled down and played some great stuff. In all honesty it became a bit of a training game in the second half, but you ve got to beat what s in front of you. I was gutted not to be playing, but the boys wanted me to go up with Bill to collect the trophy at the end. The last trophy we won was the Wessex League Cup in Paul Roast was skipper then but he was suspended for the final and I captained the team on the day. We went up together to collect the trophy, just like on Tuesday. Finally I d like to congratulate Ed Phillips on being chosen as Dorset s U16 player of the season. He works hard at his game, can have a big future, and is a lovely lad. Enjoy today s game. Scott

9 Bristol Manor Farm 4 Wimborne Town 1-31 March - Graham Dunn reports After their last-minute heroics at Taunton four days earlier, a lack-lustre Wimborne side were out-played, out-thought, and out-fought by an impressive Manor Farm outfit. After all the rain, the groundstaff and volunteers worked wonders to make the pitch playable. It was heavy going, but the hosts made light of the conditions in the first half. The opening exchanges flowed from end-to-end. On three minutes Billy Maybury played Toby Holmes through on the right, but he pulled his shot wide of the far post; Gerard Benfield then made a good save before James Stokoe was provider for Toby on five minutes. The prolific striker made space for himself, drew keeper Ashley Clark, before shooting over the bar. But from then on, Manor Farm took control of the half. On 10 minutes the hosts experienced centre-forward, Dean Stamp, forced Benfield into a good save. Moments later, central defender Steve Kingdon made himself space to head home from the corner for the opening goal. On 18 minutes, a cross from the right was weakly headed back to Benfield by Maybury. The alert Cory Simpson was onto it in a flash to double the lead. On 32 minutes, defender Jamie Turner headed a corner down and in for number three, and two minutes later Manor Farm scored their fourth. Rightwinger Troy Simpson raced onto a long ball. His cross-cum-shot came back off the bar, and Cory Simpson reacted quickest to score. Four goals in twenty-four minutes, and the Magpies were reeling. The visitors were chasing shadows as Manor Farm s pass and move football threatened more goals. However, a change in formation steadied the Wimborne ship, and three minutes before half-time they pulled a goal back. Cole played a ball through for Toby on the left. With plenty of work to do, he made room for himself before firing beyond Clark. Wimborne performed much better playing down the slope after the break. But the quality of the final pass was lacking, and they never looked like getting back on terms. Both sides spurned opportunities to add to the score-sheet. The main talking points of the half both involved the versatile Maybury. After 57 minutes his frustrated challenge in midfield led to a mass push-and-shove. Sensible refereeing saw just three yellow cards shown, and the incident calmed down. On 84 minutes, Maybury lined-up a free-kick 30 yards from goal. His superb strike was heading for the top right corner before Clark made an acrobatic tip-over. And so Wimborne s unbeaten 10-game run came to a disappointing end. On the day they were beaten by a better side. But, as we move into the final month, there will be more twists and turns in this exciting play-off chase. 10 Wimborne Town 4 Salisbury 2-2 April - Dave Briggs reports Thanks to a great effort by a team of volunteers who turned out at the crack of dawn to get the pitch playable, the crowd of 711 were treated to a highly entertaining game, which ended in a 4-2 victory for Wimborne Town against second place Salisbury. The visitors made an impressive start with Stuart Green who burst through from the kick off but put his close range shot over the bar. For the first few minutes they threatened the Wimborne goal, but the action switched to the other end where Wimborne had a couple of shots saved off the line before, after six minutes, Toby Holmes saw his shot rebound from the upright. The game flowed end to end, with the visitors having a slight edge, and on 32 minutes they took the lead when Jake Wannell headed in from Daniel Young's cross. The action continued to flow end to end and as half time approached it looked like Salisbury would go in with a goal advantage. Both teams had had penalty appeals rejected before, in the last minute of the half, a shot by Louis Kellaway struck a Salisbury defender and the ref. immediately pointed to the spot. After the vociferous complaints had partially subsided, Toby Holmes went for the power option and, although keeper Charlie Searle got his hands to the ball, he could only deflect it into the corner of the net. Seven minutes after the restart Wimborne took the lead when Lee Francis played a great through ball to Toby who finished in typical fashion. Paddy Hester headed off the line and Gerard made another good save before, on 68 minutes, he gave the ball to Jack Lovell who took it forward and played a great pass for Luke Burbidge to give Wimborne a two goal lead. That might have been expected to make life easier for Wimborne, but the visitors didn't see it that way and began to increase the pressure. On 76 minutes Salisbury reduced the deficit when a right wing corner was volleyed in by Owen Howe from beyond the far post. With dogged defending by the team, and superb work by Gerard, Wimborne hung on and, on 88 minutes, restored the two goal cushion when interplay with Burbidge set up Toby for his third hat trick in five games. Wimborne still had to defend doggedly, but the clock slowly ran down and, after five minutes of added time, the final whistle confirmed an impressive win. Even another hat trick was not sufficient to qualify for man of the match in the face of a superb goalkeeping display by Gerard Benfield. 13 Mangotsfield Utd 1 Wimborne Town 2-7 April - Graham Dunn reports Wimborne scored a dramatic winner in added-on time to bag 3 more points, and spark raucous celebrations among their growing travelling support. But at the start of the game, it was the Mangos Jordan Ricketts who strode through midfield forcing Gerard Benfield to tip over his rasping drive. The visitors first attempt on goal came on 8 minutes when Billy Maybury and Burbidge combined down the right before Maybury s shot rattled the post. Mangotsfield took the lead after 13 minutes. The experienced Kyle Tooze burst into the penalty area on the left and went down in a coming together with Louis Kellaway, and referee Rushton had no hesitation in awarding a penalty. Jordan Williams confidently found the corner with his spot-kick. Wimborne were struggling to get their flowing game together. Miss-placed passes and weak challenges saw them playing second best to Mangotsfield s athleticism. However, the Magpies restored parity on 20 minutes from a freekick 20 yards out. Maybury didn t need a sighter this time, and his brilliant effort beat the wall and the keeper. Instead of calming the visitors, it was the home side who went on to create the better chances for the rest of the half. Full-back Connor Jones forced a good save from Benfield after a quick counter-attack following a Wimborne corner; Kye Simpson found the sidenetting when coming in from the left; twice Benfield saved from right-winger Kane Simpson; and Benfield made a spectacular save in the top corner from the bustling Tooze. At the other end, Dorrington saved well from Toby after he seized on a weak back-pass. On 45 minutes Maybury was bundled over as he raced on to Burbidge s pass. A long conversation between referee and assistant delayed Toby s resulting spot-kick which Dorrington saved well. Wimborne s malaise continued after the break, and for 20 minutes they didn t threaten the home goal. However, Benfield was in regular action to keep the scores level - he saved with his feet from Kane Simpson; his hands from Mike Bryant; his body from Tooze. But the introduction of substitutes changed the momentum of the game, and for the last quarter it was the visitors who looked the most likely to score. Burbidge, coming in from his wing, had a shot charged down and then fired over from Lee Francis pass; Sam Davidson fired over; and Matt Olding had a header and shot saved. And then came that dramatic winner. Maybury won a free-kick 25 yards out on the left. Paddy Hester s trusted left foot floated the ball into the penalty area, Oldring s diving header was bound for the corner before Dorrington made yet another spectacular save, only for Burbidge to slam home the rebound, and give the visitors their first Southern League win at Cossham Street. 14 Shaftesbury Town 0 Wimborne Town 7 - Dorset Senior Cup Final - 10 April Wimborne deservedly won the Dorset Senior Cup for the first time for 21 years on a night that was a joyous celebration of football in Dorset. Shaftesbury, in their first final since , played their part, but in the end were no match for the free-flowing game played by the higher-league Magpies. The evening started with the spectacle of youth players from both clubs accompanying the teams onto the pitch in front of the large crowd. With Lee Francis unavailable, manager Matty Holmes brought Ben Walker into the back-line, and moved versatile Billy Maybury into midfield. For the first quarter, there was little to choose between the sides as they came to terms with the 3G surface, but the game came alive on 33 minutes. Wimborne were awarded a free-kick 25 yards from goal, in a fairly central position and Billy Maybury rifled the ball into the bottom corner. Five minutes later Toby Holmes hit the post, and almost immediately Shaftesbury did the same on a counterattack. But that was the closest the Wessex League side were to come. On 39 minutes Wimborne doubled their advantage. Paddy Hester and Luke Burbidge worked a free-kick wide on the left before Burbidge cut inside to beat keeper Dan Card from the edge of the area. And a minute before the break, Toby Holmes deft footwork saw him work his way along the right by-line before his shot went in off a dafender. Shaftesbury did their best to get back into the game at the start of the second period, but it was Wimborne who scored the next goal on 59 minutes. Jack Lovell, who caused his full-back problems all evening, burst into the penalty area on the left and was brought down. Toby netted the penalty, and from then on Wimborne s pass-and-move football, which was a great lesson for the youngsters watching in the crowd, took control. Lovell and Burbidge combined before the latter s shot was well saved; effervescent substitute Luke Holmes fired over; and Burbidge provided Lovell with the chance to shoot but once more keeper Card saved well. As Shaftesbury tired from chasing men and ball, Wimborne scored three more in the final minutes. On 84 minutes Toby was played through on the left and, with plenty still to do, he scored with a trademark finish. Five minutes later the prolific marksman bagged his fourth of the evening as he converted a hard cross/shot from the right. Then Luke Holmes scored the final goal with a curler into the top corner to complete a memorable night s work from a very good side who clearly enjoy playing together. Club Captain Scott Arnold and Billy Maybury jointly collected the trophy, and players and management team celebrated with their very happy supporters. 33 The present Taunton Town Football Club was formed in December 1947 by local businessmen and played their first friendly fixture during Easter They then played on a number of grounds such as Mountfields, French Weir, Victoria Park, Huish Old Boys and finished up at Denman s Park, Haines Hill. Having joined and played in the Somerset Senior League, 1953 became a notable year. The club gained admission into the Western League and moved into Wordsworth Drive, their present home. The club struggled financially and depended heavily on a very active Supporters Club during the late 50s and early 60s. 1968/69 saw an upsurge in the club s fortunes with manager Doug Hillard securing the Western League championship for the first time. During the middle 1970s Ron Gingell became manager and the club were runners up for four consecutive seasons. The 70s was also highlighted by the club purchasing the ground from Taunton Council and the installation of floodlights. During 1977 the club gained election to the Southern League. The club became a limited company in 1981 and the new board soon decided that Southern League football was too expensive and the club reverted to the Western League in Seven years later the championship pennant returned to Wordsworth Drive under the management of Keith Bowker. In 1994 the team then managed by Terry Rowles battled through to the F A Vase final at Wembley Stadium and took the lead but Diss Town won the trophy in extra time. A Brief History of Taunton Town F.C. Russell Musker was appointed manager in November 1994 and another championship followed in After two seasons as runners up three consecutive titles followed together with the club s first ever Cup success a 2 1 victory over Berkhamsted Town in the F A Carlsberg Vase final at Aston Villa s Villa Park stadium. This ended a sequence of 18 defeats in cup finals since the 1950s. Another Cup victory was achieved in 2003, lifting the Somerset Premier Cup for the first time with a 2-1 win over Yeovil Town. Peter Beadle took over as Manager in 2005 but left after only 14 games to join Newport County and former Hallen manager Gary Domone stepped into the hot seat after a disappointing start results began to improve and the club won its second Somerset Premier Cup by beating Mangotsfield United. Domone resigned as Manager in Dec 2007 and was replaced by Ian Jones, who himself resigned in April Former player Paul West, who lifted the F A Vase in 2001, took over and rebuilt the team with a local emphasis. West left the club in May 2012 and was replaced by Leigh Robinson. The club has gone from strength to strength since then and has reached the play offs for the last three seasons as well as winning the Somerset Premier Cup in three of the last four years. The icing on the cake came last season when a great run in the FA Cup led to a home tie with Barrow in the First Round Proper and the crowd of nearly 2,300 included many of the players who reached the same stage in The match finished 2-2 and meant a long and arduous journey for the replay which we lost 2-1.

35 From the Daily Echo Archives Wimborne Town 0 Taunton Town 2-4 December 2010 It never rains but it pours may well have crossed Alex Browne s mind as he stood in his technical area getting soaked by a relentless Dorset downpour, while his team sank further into the relegation mire on the sodden turf. Having watched his men dominate for long periods, Browne looked on as Wimborne were undone by an efficient Taunton Town, who made the most of the chances that came their way. With just one league win in their past eight outings, Browne remains positive. It showed how cruel football can be. Every one of my lads was top drawer. On chances created and possession enjoyed, the hosts could, and should, have enhanced their points tally. But Wimborne will at least seek solace in the fact they are unlikely to come up against a goalkeeper in such inspired form every week. Taunton s Chris Astley was the visitors stand-out player. On 45 minutes, Astley produced the first part of his show-stopping act when he made a reaction save to keep out a close-range volley from Matt Groves. Moments later Taunton opened the scoring. Jon Vance unleashed a dipping drive from 25 yards which left Walker-Harris motionless. Magpies set about finding a route back into the game after the interval. But having again seen plenty of the ball, Browne s men were on the receiving end of a painful counter-punch on 73 minutes. After a fine flowing move, Piper showed wonderful touch and composure to fire past Walker-Harris. Wimborne s responded, but they found Astley too good. The keeper showed solid handling to hold a Smith free-kick before blocking the former Christchurch midfielder s low drive. Completing a hat-trick of excellent late saves, he dived low to paw away another Smith shot as Wimborne came up short. Magpies: Walker-Harris, Wilson, Haysom, Roast, Curtis, Lloyd, Green, Stokoe, Chudy (Barnes, 70), Groves, Smith. Unused subs: Lockyer, Powell, Yelland, Malara (g/k). Wimborne Town 1 Taunton Town 1-7 April 2015 GRAHAM Mercieca made Wimborne pay for a profligate first half by rescuing a draw for high-flying Taunton. Magpies made most of the running during the first half with Luke Stone firing over the bar when well placed early on. Stone atoned for that miss when he broke in behind and teed up Sam Griffin for a deserved opener for the hosts. But he spurned a one-on-one opportunity before the break and the Peacocks battled back after the interval. Mercieca s deflected 30-yard free-kick restored parity and gave Taunton the impetus to push for a winner but Wimborne held out. Magpies: Harvell, Arnold, Oliver, Maybury, Costello, Blake (Biles, 83), Griffin, Kellaway, Stone (Waters, 77), Gamble (Kemble, h-t), Stokoe. Unused subs: Phelps, Roast.

40 Non-League Paper Programme Column - Matt Badcock MY MUM is annoyed. Not, this time, at one of my life decisions. This time, it s a former England cricketer who has got her goat. Phil Tufnell. You have a lot to answer for. A few weeks back on Question of Sport, it came to the questionable miming/description round.for those who don t watch the BBC quiz, a word is flashed up on the screen. A sport, personality, action you get the picture. The team captains have to act out the word for their team to guess correctly and much hilarity ensues. So, a few weeks ago, up came the phrase: Non-League football. Tuffers as we are obliged to call him with this a programme high on banter mimed passing a football and said, When you re not very good at doing that. Well, let me tell you reader, I was watching that day too and, like Mrs B, the red mist descended. Not very good!? NOT VERY GOOD!? Look, of course Question of Sport is not a thing to be getting riled up about. There are far more important issues going on in the world (like, why do selfservice tills give 20p of change in coppers?) but it was a little window into how Non-League is perceived at times. Yes, players are at this level for a reason but we all know about the talent pool outside the Football League. Many have had long successful professional careers and are winding down their days for enjoyment, others have cottoned onto the fact they can earn their best money by combining a decent job with a part-time football gig. Clearly the players at the elite level are operating on a different planet but you get an equally, if not more so, entertaining 90 minutes in Non-League football. I think first-timers are often surprised at how good the quality of play is at these levels. Throw in the rest of the package cheaper entry, better food, drink in the bar before and after and it makes for an enjoyable day out. Maybe it s a chip on the shoulder effect, but do you often feel like you have to defend Non-League football? Like when the FA Cup rolls around and the Butcher, Baker and Candlestick maker stories appear in the national papers. He works on a building site and can pass the ball to a team-mate incredible! Last season during Lincoln City s FA Cup run, a press box colleague asked if the Imps were full-time and did I know what jobs some of the players had before. Less than 20 minutes later, they d knocked out Premier League Burnley to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals. More and more players are getting their chance in the Football League and beyond even the managers are being given a chance now as League chairmen realise the game is played on the same size pitch with goals at both ends. So, let s keep fighting Non-League s corner. Even my mum is!

43 WTFC Ability Counts Teams - 8 April - Luke Coakes reports CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM: took on Dorchester and looked very dominant but somehow managed to lose 2-1 after taking the lead, key players missing including main goalkeeper. But the bonus is Poole didn't turn up so we got automatic 3 points from that! LEAGUE TEAM: Unfortunately the team took a heavy defeat at hands of DAG Dynamos 7-0, also had main goalkeeper missing. Like the Championship team they also got default 3 points due to a team leaving early! This leaving early or not turning up really needs sorting ahead of next season! 44 History of Wimborne Town F.C. Wimborne Town was formed in 1878 and became a founder member of the Dorset County FA in In the 1930 s the Club won the Dorset Division Two title three times, the Dorset Junior Challenge Cup twice and the Dorset Junior Amateur Cup four times. Wimborne s first senior honour came in 1937 with the Dorset Senior Amateur Cup, a feat not repeated until In 1981, Wimborne won the Dorset League Division One championship without losing a match. The same year, Wimborne joined the Western League and finished third in Division One in 1984/85. Wimborne Town joined the Wessex League in 1987 and so began a glittering chapter in the Club s history. Over the following 22 years they won the Wessex League three times (1991/2, 1993/93 & 1999/00) and lifted the Wessex League Cup in 1993/94 to become the first team to achieve the League and Cup double. They repeated that feat in 1999/00 and also won the Dorset Senior Challenge Cup in 1991/92 and 1996/97. Wimborne Town also have a history of achievement in FA competitions. In 1982/83, they reached the FA Cup First Round where they played Aldershot, then a league side. The dream ended there, however, with a 4-0 defeat. And in 1992, the Club reached the FA Vase final, thus becoming the first ever Dorset club to play at Wembley. On a memorable day, under manager Alex Pike, the Magpies lifted the trophy with a 5-3 win over holders Guiseley. That same season, Wimborne also won the Dorset Senior Challenge Cup and Wessex League championship to complete an historic treble triumph. 2009/10 was another milestone for the Magpies as they gained promotion to the Southern League for the first time in the Club s history. After a difficult first two seasons Wimborne have now become established in the league. In 2014/15, after a run of 4 victories, the Magpies reached the FA Trophy first round proper for the first time in the club s history. A 3-0 home defeat by Oxford City of the Conference North ended the excitement. A disappointing start to the 2015/16 season led to Steve Cuss resigning as Manager in November. Club stalwart Paul Roast took over as caretaker boss before Simon Browne was appointed as Manager, During this time new Directors came on board, but due diligence of the finances uncovered a large deficit. Despite the playing budget being slashed, and most of the squad leaving, relegation was avoided. Off the field, a great effort led to the financial position being resolved. For the 2016/17 season there was renewed optimism with a new Board in place. Matty Holmes took over as Manager, and assembled a strong but young squad which achieved our highest position in the league. This season all the squad have re-signed, so ambitions are high.

47 Wimborne Town F.C. Youth Section The following WTFC Youth players were selected by their team managers to be mascots at the Dorset Senior Cup Final on Tuesday evening. WTFC Under 8's - Max White, Leo Welton, Harry Ruscoe WTFC U9's - Noah Wareham, Tom Wareham, Ashton Grant, Hayden Comley. WTFC U10's - Harrison Snow, Joseph Ruscoe, Toby Butt, Rufus Walmsley WTFC U11's - Alfie Maybury, Charlie Middlemiss, Jacob Scott, Harrison Comley WTFC U12's - Zach Wood, William Avey-Hebditch, Harry Whitcher. Ed Phillips wins Dorset FA U16's Player of the Season Award One of Wimborne Town FC Under 16's goalkeepers, Ed Phillips, has just been announced Dorset FA U16's Player of the Season. Many of you will have seen Ed is the pre-match warm-up assisting Gerard and our strikers (see photo opposite). Ed joined WTFC at Under 7's and had a brief spell with Bournemouth Sports before re-joining WTFC at Under 11's. The following season Ed helped WTFC U12's win the County Cup by keeping a clean sheet in a 1-0 win. The following seasons Ed has been part of the excellent WTFC squads which have been runners-up in the top division in Dorset on three separate occasions. Ed has played for PEDSSA Rep squad and this season has played in every Dorset FA Under 16's match. This season has already been a very busy season for Ed who has played for Queen Elizabeth's School Year 11 and Year 13 teams, Dorset Schools U16 Rep team, WTFC U18's and selected for WTFC Development Squad. Ed has been coached by Clive Saunders, and currently by WTFC's John Macey and Dave Walsh who both have improved his technical ability and also, very importantly for goalkeepers, his mental strength. Ed enjoys training with Gerard Benfield, who is a great inspiration for all our WTFC Youth goalkeepers. Dave Walsh, WTFC's Goalkeeping Coach says "Ed has had a fantastic year at Wimborne Town Football Club. Back in pre-season he showed good promise when training with our first team and that has continued throughout the season, picking up and using advice given to him by the range of coaches at WTFC and at Dorset FA. Ed's attitude is one of the biggest factors to his development and the way Ed has progressed. He is fully committed to make himself a better player and learning from others. Ed has had a great year which has made WTFC and myself very proud of his achievement. Well done Ed" Ed is a member of the growing and very successful Wimborne Town FC Goalkeeper School, run by Dave Walsh on Thursday evenings at Cuthbury which coaches goalkeepers from WTFC and other local clubs from U6's to senior goalkeepers. 48 Reminiscing with Ken In this new, occasional feature, Club Historian Ken Fergus looks back through his collection of WTFC programmes. Wimborne Town vs Thatcham Town Jewson Wessex League 27 April 1996 Today we re looking back 22 years to the match programme for our final home game of 1995/96. The Magpies, after a disappointing season by our high standards, sat in 6th place while visitors Thatcham Town needed just three points to clinch their first Wessex title. Cuthbury News reminded fans that there was a coach cost 2.50 going to Bemerton s ground for the Wessex League Cup Final against Downton on the 6th of May. (Older fans won t need reminding that we lost that final on penalties to a Downton side who were inspired by Magpies Vase hero Simon Lynn and who thoroughly deserved the win.) Chairman Steve Churchill used his column to thank the managers, players & backroom staff who have remained loyal to the Club this season in difficult circumstances. Steve was referring to the resignations of manager Tony Funnell and assistant Brian Lawrence in the September and chairman Brian Maidment in December. Mark Stroller Allan had taken over from Tony Funnell for a short while as player/manager but by April he had reverted to being just a player. The centre pages of the programme (opposite) contain the team line-ups. Four years after our Wembley triumph, Vase heroes Kevin Leonard, Nick Bridle, Andy Taplin, Martin Boots Beardsley, Mark Allan & Jamie Sturgess were still at the Club and they d been joined by one of the finest players I ever saw turn out in the black & white Brett Phillips. And there s future Magpie skipper Danny Robbins (son of Jeff) at right back in his first season at Cuthbury. The programme lists the average attendances of each of the clubs in the Wessex League and you won t be surprised to hear that Wimborne Town led the way. Our average home crowd in 1995/96 was 129, 12 more than second placed Andover. Eastleigh are 10th in the attendance table with an average crowd of 68; 22 years later they are currently averaging 1,966 in the Vanarama National League. How things have changed! Wimborne won the game 2-1 and finished 6th, one place below Christchurch. And Thatcham won their last game to clinch the league by a single point from AFC Lymington their first title since winning the Hellenic Premier in And we must mention that next month the Watersiders will become only the fifth current or former Wessex League side to play in a national cup final when they meet Stockton at Wembley in the FA Vase Final. Good luck to them.

51 Football Shorts League Two quote of the week We can t complain about the geography because the solution is don t enter the league. But it s a long trek, 12 and a half hours on a coach yesterday, and the lads were feeling it in their legs a little bit. John Coleman, the Accrington Stanley manager, on the 540-mile round trip, and 1-0 victory, away to Colchester United. The Times The Game 9 April Football Shorts - Panini s World Cup album costs a packet Pocket money could be too tight to mention for young football fans this summer after the playground tradition of completing a World Cup sticker album became a lot more expensive. Panini has been accused of greed after raising the price of a packet by 60 per cent, from 50p to 80p, taking the cost of completing the official Russia 2018 album to as much as 600, more than the cost of the average price of a Premier League season ticket. A packet of stickers in 1986 cost 12p. The latest collection will require 682 stickers to complete with fans needing to buy an average of 747 packs to get The Times 23 March 2018 all the players, according to statistical analysis. The 1986 album required only 427 stickers. The increase over the past 32 years is 700 per cent, during a time when general inflation has averaged 3.4 per cent. If the cost of stickers had gone up by the same rate as other prices, a packet would now cost 28p. Fans will also have to learn about shrinkflation because 32 years ago the packets had six not five stickers. The long lead-in time for the album means fans will collect stickers of players who will not be at the tournament due to injury or loss of form. 53 Dorset Dave s Chuckle Corner Taunton is the county town of Somerset. It had a population of 64,621 at the last Census. The town name derives from "Town on the River Tone" or Tone Town. The town has over 1,000 years of religious and military history. Notable places of interest are Taunton Castle, Somerset County Cricket ground, Vivary Park, Taunton Racecourse and The Museum of Somerset There's a man in Liverpool who claims to have invented a game that in certain respects is a bit like cricket. What he doesn't know is that the England team has been playing it for years. Sherlock Holmes & Watson go to a Rock Museum. They walk around for a while when Watson notices that there is a rock that doesn't have a display name. "What kind of rock is that?" he asked. Sherlock: "Sedimentary, my dear Watson!" Dracula has moved out of his castle for a few weeks. It s getting a revamp. Castles were great places to go for a party.they were famous for their knight life. What s a horse s favourite TV show? And this over here croaked the 90 year old museum tour guide, is a fossil 4 million and 69 years old, on it s left you can see another fossil that s 2 million and 69 years old. Wow!
