3 From the Directors Box Good afternoon, and welcome to Cuthbury to our visitors from Yate. We extend our hospitality to the officials, players, staff and supporters, and hope you enjoy your time with us and have a safe journey home. We turn our attention back to the league campaign after a disappointing defeat in the FA Cup replay during the week. I wrote in the Andover programme on Tuesday that we have a poor record against Wessex League sides in the Cup (5 teams have beaten us over the last 6 or 7 seasons now) and Tuesday proved to be another disappointing early exit in front of a good sized mid-week crowd. I m not sure anyone can put their finger on why we have such a poor record in the FA Cup but unfortunately it struck us again this year. I know Matty is bitterly disappointed, as we all are, on the playing front whilst from the board room the loss of the prize money also hurts especially as the next round was at home to a lower league side. However, frustrating though it is and well done to Andover and good luck to them in the next round, we have to look forward not back and now knuckle down in the league against Yate today and then the short trip to Winchester on Monday. Elsewhere just a reminder that the Family Fun Day takes place tomorrow on the bottom pitch. Louise has been working hard behind the scenes to pull this together and has done a great job. Please come along to support her efforts and all those activities and stalls who have signed up to attend the entrance price of 1 is being donated to Julia s House so you ll be helping out both the club and the charity by coming along. Thanks as always for your support. 5 From the Dugout Good afternoon everyone and welcome to our league game v Yate Town, I would like to welcome the players, staff and supporters of Yate Town to Wimborne for the game today. Todays game v Yate will be another tough task. They won here at the end of last season and finished the season on a high with some good results so they would have had good momentum coming into this season. The FA Cup defeat to Andover on Tuesday was hard to swallow. Over both ties we feel it was an opportunity lost after being in a controlling situation in both matches. Once the game settled down, we dominated the first half going 1-0 up through a great move and Dan Cann scoring. From there we continued to miss chance after chance which, like Saturday, cost us the game. We spoke after Saturday s game about defending the long ball which we did very well on Tuesday. As a manager you want the team to react to things we did not do well from the previous game, Andover were a good team but caused no real threat but won the game with the two individual mistakes that we made. Our challenge now as a whole team is to eradicate individual mistakes. Our first 2 league games and 2 cup games have seen us dominate all the games for long periods, so we are frustrated at the moment that we are not yet at the stage of seeing a game through. It will come as I believe the squad this season, although the same as last season, is stronger, we can t expect to win every game 3-2!!! We hope Scotty will play a game next Wednesday on his road to recovery. His presence will give the place a real boost once he starts full training and plays games with the lads. Josh Hartley has a hamstring injury, and he will be out for some time now, Will Prior is waiting for a date for an operation on his knee. I hope you all enjoy the game this afternoon. 7 From the Dressing Room Hi, and welcome to our second home league game of the season, today it s against Yate. In both of our league games against them last season the away team won 3-0. We put on one of our best displays of at Lodge Road in late August when Stef, Stokes and Toby scored, and they played really well here near the end of the season in April. For me personally, it s been a really frustrating time this season. I d recovered well from my hip op, and then turned my ankle in our very first training session. I was hoping to have 90 minutes playing for the Development Squad on Wednesday, but working with our new physio Laurence, we ve decided to delay that until next Wednesday. If we don t get my recovery right, then it ll be back to square one, so I ve got to be patient. Matty wants me to get a couple of games under my belt before he considers me for selection. I so want to be out on the pitch helping the boys. They ve played really well at times in all four matches so far, but we ve got to do it in both halves, and we ve got to cut out individual errors, because at the moment it seems every mistake we make is being punished. In that first game against Cleeve, we started brightly, and the Luke-Toby combination got our season going. When MattyO scored from Luke s corner we were in control of the game at 2-0. But then we gave them a life-line just before the break, and 2-1 with ten men could have been difficult. But Matty re-porganised and the boys had a good second half with Jack scoring a third. In the game at Didcot they had the better of the first half-hour, and we gave them a 2-0 start. Canny pulled one back not long before the break, and Jack nearly equalised with a header against the post. At the start of the second half the boys were on fire, and could have had three before Stokes scored from Bill s cross / shot. At that stage we looked as though we d go on and win. But we let Didcot back into it although the 4-2 scoreline was not a fair reflection of the game. We were well in control at 2-0 after half an hour in the cup tie at Andover, when we played some of our best football of the season. but then we had a mad 5 minutes and let them back in the game. It s something we ve got to learn, and fast. When you re on top you ve got to kill the game off. It was the same on Tuesday night. We were in control in the first half but didn t take our chances. We let them into the game just after half-time, and then we seemed to go quiet. In our last three games we ve conceded 4, then 3, then 2 so maybe this afternoon we ll get close to our first clean sheet. Like us, Yate were knocked out of the FA Cup, by Cadbury Heath who Andover play next, so both teams have something to prove. It should be a good game. I hope you enjoy it.. Scott Arnold

8 Wimborne Town 1 Andover Town 2-22 August 2017 Emirates FA Cup Preliminary Round Replay - Graham Dunn reports In this tale of two towns, an evening that started with great expectations ended with the Cuthbury feeling like a bleak house. For the second successive season, Wimborne were knocked out of the Cup at the first stage by a team in the Wessex League from Hampshire beginning with A. As in the first game at Andover on Saturday, Wimborne let an early lead slip, as Andover capitalised on two defensive mistakes in the second half to win. Manager Holmes made two changes to his starting XI, Billy Maybury and Stefan Penny replacing Sam Davidson and the injured Josh Hartley. Andover started brightly and forced three corners in the first five minutes. Having dealt with those, Wimborne began to assume a measure of control. Dan Cann fed Luke Holmes from the left but his shot went over the bar. Matt Oldring and Penny combined before the latter s stinging shot was well saved by keeper Thomas. Jack Lovell volleyed over from Penny s cross, and James Stokoe s chip forwards caused problems for the visitors defence as Thomas had to save from his defender s header. On 21 minutes the Magpies took the lead they had been threatening. Luke sent Toby Holmes galloping down the right and his low cross was converted at the far post by the stretching Cann. With their defence smothering Andover s attacks, Wimborne continued to create chances. Lovell headed Penny s cross just wide, Toby lobbed from the left, and Lovell s cross was turned in but disallowed for offside. Andover s first shot, which was blocked by a resolute home defence, came a minute before half-time. Would the spurned chances of the first half come back to haunt Wimborne? We had our answer within four minutes of the restart. A missed tackle on Andover s left allowed Gosney to cross into the penalty area. Silver was bundled over and the ref pointed to the spot. Gosney gave Gerard Benfield no chance as he drilled the penalty into the bottom corner. And the dynamics of the game changed. Andover were now quicker to the ball and looked dangerous on the break. Their second goal came ten minutes later. Wimborne s free kick wide on the right was cleared high and long. Penny was deceived by the bounce, and Rusher pounced onto the loose ball and calmly lobbed Benfield from distance. With a lead to defend, Andover showed the greater determination. Although Wimborne forced the pace in the last 20 minutes, they were unable to find that second goal to take the tie into extratime. 16 History of Wimborne Town F.C. Wimborne Town was formed in 1878 and became a founder member of the Dorset County FA in In the 1930 s the Club won the Dorset Division Two title three times, the Dorset Junior Challenge Cup twice and the Dorset Junior Amateur Cup four times. Wimborne s first senior honour came in 1937 with the Dorset Senior Amateur Cup, a feat not repeated until In 1981, Wimborne won the Dorset League Division One championship without losing a match. The same year, Wimborne joined the Western League and finished third in Division One in 1984/85. Wimborne Town joined the Wessex League in 1987 and so began a glittering chapter in the Club s history. Over the following 22 years they won the Wessex League three times (1991/2, 1993/93 & 1999/00) and lifted the Wessex League Cup in 1993/94 to become the first team to achieve the League and Cup double. They repeated that feat in 1999/00 and also won the Dorset Senior Challenge Cup in 1991/92 and 1996/97. Wimborne Town also have a history of achievement in FA competitions. In 1982/83, they reached the FA Cup First Round where they played Aldershot, then a league side. The dream ended there, however, with a 4-0 defeat. And in 1992, the Club reached the FA Vase final, thus becoming the first ever Dorset club to play at Wembley. On a memorable day, under manager Alex Pike, the Magpies lifted the trophy with a 5-3 win over holders Guiseley. That same season, Wimborne also won the Dorset Senior Challenge Cup and Wessex League championship to complete an historic treble triumph. 2009/10 was another milestone for the Magpies as they gained promotion to the Southern League for the first time in the Club s history. After a difficult first two seasons Wimborne have now become established in the league. In 2014/15, after a run of 4 victories, the Magpies reached the FA Trophy first round proper for the first time in the club s history. A 3-0 home defeat by Oxford City of the Conference North ended the excitement. A disappointing start to the 2015/16 season led to Steve Cuss resigning as Manager in November. Club stalwart Paul Roast took over as caretaker boss before Simon Browne was appointed as Manager, During this time new Directors came on board, but due diligence of the finances uncovered a large deficit. Despite the playing budget being slashed, and most of the squad leaving, relegation was avoided. Off the field, a great effort led to the financial position being resolved. For the 2016/17 season there was renewed optimism with a new Board in place. Matty Holmes took over as Manager, and assembled a strong but young squad which achieved our highest position in the league. This season all the squad have re-signed, so ambitions are high.

17 Introducing - Josh Buck What's your football playing history? Poole Town FC throughout my Youth to First Team, Brockenhurst College and Blackfield & Langley FC. What position do you prefer to play in? Prefer to play ideally anywhere on the left side! What's the best game you've played in? That would be winning the National Colleges Cup Final at St. George s Park during my 1st year at Brockenhurst College amongst a team of predominantly 2nd and 3rd years. Tell us about your best goal or pass or tackle or goal-line clearance? During the National College s Cup Final we were 3-2 up whilst under immense pressure late on, I beat 2 players down the wing and squared it for our striker to finish in an open net to put us 4-2 up and give us a bit of comfort in the closing stages of the game. Wasn t the scorer of the goal but was an incredible feeling none the less. Which professional player do you most admire, and why? Gareth Bale. I admire how much he improved as a player, progressing from a left back at Southampton FC into an attacking winger at Real Madrid, one of the biggest clubs in the world. Which team(s) do you support? Liverpool and Coventry City as these are both the places my parents were born and brought up and I was brought up following. What was the first live game you can remember going to? A 6-2 tonking of Derby County in Coventry s final game at Highfield Road. What can we supporters expect from you? Hard work, determination and the correct preparation off the field to be able to play to the best of my ability for the team and the supporters. What are your ambitions in football? Long term would be to continue improving as a player and play at the highest possible level. Starting with what I hope will be a successful season at Wimborne Town. What do you do for your "day job"? I work as a Railway Surveyor/Technical Engineer. What advice would you give to a youngster who wants to make a career of playing football? Be 100% dedicated to football on and off the field. Josh - thanks for your time. We wish you well, and hope that you ll soon have an even better run and pass to tell everyone about.

Yate Town F.C. a brief history Yate Town FC began life as Yate Rovers in WW 1 intervened, and although Rovers reformed after the war, they later disbanded in the early 30s. In season Yate YMCA. was formed, entering Bristol & District Div 5. Keeper Frank Boulton, one of 4 brothers in the team, later played for Arsenal. After the Second World War, they reformed, still known as Yate YMCA, playing in the Bristol and District League and the Avon Premier Combination. Yate YMCA were amongst the founders of the Gloucester County League in 1958 and the following year they dropped the YMCA from their title in favour of Town.

26 Yate Town F.C. a brief history cont d A major step forward came in 1983 when they joined the Hellenic League. Promotion to the Premier Division was accomplished in the season. The following season they won the Hellenic Premier League. That successful formula continued into the season when they retained the Championship. In the quest for further soccer prestige, Yate Town obtained election to the Southern League, Southern Division in Yate Town moved to Lodge Road in 1984 having previously played at Yate Aerodrome and Sunnyside. Covered accommodation was erected in 1987 and floodlighting in After 3 seasons in the Midland Division, the club was switched back to the Southern Division. In the season, after more regionalisation, Yate Town finished well adrift and were relegated to the Hellenic League. In Yate finished second behind North Leigh, who did not take-up the promotion place available, and so returned to the Southern League. In they finished runners-up in Division One West, and secured promotion to the Southern League Premier Division for the first time. They also won the Glos F.A. Senior Challenge Cup for the first time, beating Bristol Rovers 2-0. Town exceeded all expectation in the season. Despite a poor start they finished in sixth position, and retained the Glos Senior Cup,. After 2 more encouraging seasons in the Premier Division, and a change of management, the Club could not climb out of the relegation zone in , and are now in the South & West Division. The season saw a much-changed and relatively inexperienced squad finish in mid-table. Despite the addition of several experienced players, the season saw little progress made, and Rob Cousins was installed as Manager. The season was notable for a superb run in the F.A. Cup. Victories against Poole Town, Winchester City, Oxford City and North Leigh saw us drawn at home to Conference giants Newport County in the final Qualifying Round. After a 3-3 draw at home, we won the replay 3-1 with two goals in extra-time. We were drawn away to neighbours Cheltenham Town in the First Round, and again excelled ourselves before losing 3-0. We became victims of our own success, and the close season saw the departure of most of the squad. Cousins was replaced by Craig Laird in March 2015, but a disappointing campaign led to another change in management with Paul Britton, assisted by Jon Lester, appointed before the start of last season.. They were targeted with introducing new, young players into the team. The great majority of these players have returned for the season, augmented by further additions to the squad.

28 From the Daily Echo Archives Wimborne Town 5 Yate Town 1-16 March 2013 WIMBORNE Town boss Steve Cuss claimed his team were a match for anyone after watching them end their winless league run in emphatic fashion. The Magpies fought back from Edd Vahid's early effort, taking full advantage of some good fortune and playing the treacherous conditions well to crush play-off chasing Yate at Cuthbury. Shaun Brian's diving header from Aidan Sainsbury's low centre levelled the match against the run of play before Jon Blake handed the hosts a half-time lead with a shot from the edge of the penalty area which took a heavy deflection off Yate defender Scott Thomas. Marauding defender Nathan Peprah-Annan then extended the Magpies' lead when his floated cross from the left evaded everyone to nestle in the top left corner of Lubos Ancin's net. Blake wrapped up the points by converting Adam Costello's cross shot at the far post before Brian plundered another header from Sainsbury's free-kick with five minutes to go. It was Wimborne's fourth win against the league's current top six this season and boss Cuss insists his charges have nothing to fear from the division's big guns. Cuss told the Daily Echo: This result and some of the others we have had against the top sides show we are a match for anyone in this league on our day. Consistency has been the word thrown around the dressing room all season and we have all felt the frustration when we haven't been able to find the level of performance that we aspire to on a regular basis. The performance was particularly pleasing because we had to show resilience and dig in. Yate created plenty of chances for a spell in the first half and the lads deserve a lot of credit for the way we stuck to the task and didn't go under at 1-0 down. We rode it out and reaped the rewards. They also had some pressure at 2-1 so the third goal was crucial, but we really kicked on from there and I was delighted with the performance and the result. Cuss, whose team had failed to score in seven of their previous 11 league matches, admitted there was an element of luck to a couple of Wimborne's goals but insisted that fortune favours the brave. The Magpies manager added: You make your own luck. We have been critical of the players at times this season, and particularly in recent weeks, for not shooting, so you earn that luck by having a go. We talked about sharing the goals around other areas of the team. Our strikers have gone through a bit of a lean spell lately despite working hard to put it right, so getting goals from different areas takes the pressure off a little and gives you the chance to win matches. Magpies: Harvell, Arnold, Cole, Brian, Peprah-Annan, Blake, Sainsbury, Costello, Smith (Mogg, 80), Davidson (Jeffes, 78), Webb (Maybury, 74). Unused subs: Roast, Ackerman (g/k).

29 How do you take a perfect corner? - James Gheerbrant The Times 10 May 2017 When this article about goals in the Premier League scored from corners was written, there had been which was 13.9% of all the goals scored. West Brom were the League s top scorers from corners with 15 out of their total of 41 goals (36.6%). At the other end of the scale, Man City had only scored 4 of their goals from corners. A significant concentration of successful corners are delivered to the near post, which partly explains the apparent abundance of corners that don t beat the first man. The perfect near-post corner is the footballing equivalent of cricket s yorker: get it right and it s nigh-on undefendable; err fractionally and you look silly. There are other factors to consider - among them whether to hit an outswinger or an inswinger. The data shows that slightly more goals this season have been scored from outswingers, but interestingly, West Brom, the Premier League s corner kings, strongly favour inswingers, which have yielded 12 of their 15 goals from corners. 34 Wimborne Town F.C. Youth Section by Gary Neild It's black or white! Well it is with me. For a football club to be successful I strongly believe it's all about having a desirable and healthy culture. The Neild family were fortunate to enjoy a successful 2016/17 season being a part of the Wimborne Town under 15 squad, enthusiastically managed by Gus Phillips and his assistant, Andy Fripp. Our son Daniel, played for Bournemouth Electric for a number of seasons and whilst enjoying his football we all realised he needed a new challenge. In stepped Gus. Those of you who know Gus can't help but be captivated by his energy and commitment. His organisation is second to none and his e- mails are the stuff of legend. He's stepped down as manager and now the balding new management duo, ' Right said Fred' have taken the reigns...our younger readers of course won't have a clue what I'm on about!! I believe the club have made a superb appointment making Gus the Chair of the Wimborne Town Youth section. Terry, it's your turn to experience the keyboard ninja in action! I've been asked to write this column because I was overheard articulating to all the new boys and parents, at our trials day, that I couldn't quite believe how, in a season, Wimborne Town Football club had grabbed me in a way I never anticipated. To such an extent that I agreed to be the manager of the under 16's this season - even though my boy Daniel has left for pastures new. More about this later. It would appear to me that we couldn't have joined Wimborne Town at a better time. After a period of uncertainty the club emerged into the 2016/17 season with a sense of real optimism. Aside from the improved financial position, the master stroke was enticing Matty Holmes and his back room staff to the club. By the end of the season WTFC first team had finished in their highest ever position in the league. More of the same this season Matty. Whenever anyone joins somewhere new and wishes to change the dynamics it always takes time, in a job, in a sports club or in life in general. I heard much about Wimborne Town having a pathway to the senior team but I thought it was just rhetoric. As the season unfolded it became clear though that positive change was underway. My boy was fortunate enough to play a few games for Darren's successful under 16 team last season and was made very welcome and treated fantastically by all concerned. The positive culture wasn't just in Gus's team it was clear that it transcended the age groups. Gus decided to step down from running the Under 15's toward the end of the season and I said I would help with his transition in the remaining few games. A great group of parents enhanced this experience. I was invited to the youth managers' meetings where I observed an enthusiastic bunch who gave so much time and effort for their respective boys and the youth section as a whole. Terry Wateridge with his effortless style, provided clear direction and it was obvious to me that I was getting involved in something special.

35 Wimborne Town F.C. Youth Section by Gary Neild cont d Frankly, like most managers I'm sure, I haven't really got sufficient time to dedicate to Wimborne Town. I have less time now than I anticipated though, as we have to go to Yeovil for training three times a week and travel to games on a Saturday. It was Newport in Wales last week. You see my boy signed for the Yeovil Town FC Under 16 Youth Academy and left me at Wimborne Town. Thanks Daniel! I think I surprised quite a few people by saying I would still run the team into the 2017/18 season. Someone said that they bet I had to think long and hard about my decision. The truth is it took me all of 30 seconds to rationalise my commitment to Wimborne Town. Made easier of course by having an understanding wife! I started off the season simply as a supporting parent hoping that as a family, we had made the correct decision. A few games in we had little doubt and soon we become absolutely certain. I finished the season being well and truly ingrained in the fabric of the club, something I hadn't expected. It's the quality of the people who make a club and it's accurate to state that there are some brilliant individuals who put in a lot of time and effort at Wimborne. As parents, as fans, you should never underestimate the work that goes on behind the scenes. A positive culture is not borne out of coincidence. One of the things that has really impressed me is how much people care. It's not about egos, it's all about the boys. We only do this because we think we can make a difference. I started off saying it's black or white, for me it's now firmly black and white. 39 Simply the best - as chosen by Dan Cann We asked Dan to name the best he d played with or seen in these categories: Best goalkeeper Best defender Best midfielder Jimmy Glass / Lewis Price Will Spetch Matty Holmes Best forward James Stokoe (AFCB 2003) Best striker Best headerer Best dead-ball specialist Best passer Best tackler Most talented Fastest Best overall player James Hayter Lamin Dibba (Poole) Steve Devlin Aaron Skelton Taffy Richardson Brian Stock Alan O Brien (Hungerford) Carl Pettifer Caption Competition We thought Alan Bolton s suggestion for this photo of James after the Bishops Cleeve game the best: Who said he s a has-bin? Alan wins the star prize of a free hot drink - it doesn t get much better than that.

41 Dorset Dave s Chuckle Corner The name YATE is derived from the Old English word 'gete' or 'grete' meaning 'A Gateway into a Forest Area' Bearing this in mind here is a collection of relevant material:- A man is sitting in a sidewalk cafe in Essex and he notices a couple of blokes from the council working across the street. One of the blokes digs a hole, and the other bloke comes along behind him and shovels the dirt back in the hole. They go up and down the entire block like this. Finally, as they stop to work in front of the cafe, the man speaks up "I've been watching the two of you work, but for the life of me I can't figure out what it is that you're doing." One of the blokes looks at him and says, "Oh, well normally there's three of us, but the bloke who plants the trees is off sick today." Q. What s brown and sticky A. A Stick How do trees access the internet? They log on. Did you know that I can cut down a tree just by looking at it? It s true. I saw it with my own eyes! What did the beaver say to the tree? It s been nice gnawing you! A Friend went to a Star Trek fancy dress party dressed as a tree. He was the Captain s Log. My brother is tracing our family tree. He s not very good at drawing. Someone stole my mate s fake Christmas tree. It s not fir. And now Dave s limerick: There was a young lady from Yate Who was always exceedingly late She missed her holiday flight And was sent overnight In the hold of a plane in a crate. Best Joke at this year s Edinburgh Fringe - by Ken Cheng I m not a fan of the new pound coin, but then again, I hate all change! Dear John A reader writes: Dear John, I gave a letter to the postman, he put it in his sack. But early next morning, he brought my letter back. What did I do wrong? John s answer: Your letter is very topical as it is 40 years since the death of the king, Elvis. You sent a letter to postman and then the next morning they sent it back Life can be cruel when you love someone and they don't feel the same. I imagine that you are feeling down at the moment. All I will say to you is just watch a couple of episodes of East Enders and you will think life is not too bad after all. So don't sit in the corner because the grass isn't always greener. I hope that I've been of some help Brian
