3 FROM THE EDITOR S DESK Saturday s clash with top of the table SWINDON SUPERMARINE was always going to be difficult and we worked very hard to blunt their goal-threat. Kayden Jackson, on loan from Swindon Town caused us problems and it was from his break down the flank and low cross, which so nearly won them the game, but KEVIN SAWYER made a superb reflex save from Sam Morris. Apart from that, on the other occasions that they threatened, their shooting was a little wayward. We took the main chance that came our way from a careless pass from their defender Jake Johns and LEWIS POWELL opened his account for us. It was a vital goal and from that point, we played with a re-newed confidence. It was a hard-earned, gutsy performance, and it is now obvious that we have the players this season who can deal with the physical aspects of the game. A welcome win and we would certainly be happy with another one this evening, as we extend a warm welcome to The Peacocks of TAUNTON TOWN FC. They are just below us in the table and suffered a 1-3 home defeat on Saturday to a North Leigh side who are now in 3 rd place. We are coming up to the 10 game marker where traditionally, fans and management of all teams like to think that they know how the season will pan out. With a game or two in hand of some clubs, a win tonight could put us in mid-table and give us a confidence boost ahead of Saturday s trip to EASTLEIGH. They don t come much harder than that considering that no Conference Premier clubs are in this round and we were just unfortunate enough to be drawn away to a club who are on top of their division!! Just give it a go lads and who knows, we MIGHT just bring them back for a replay. We know it s a long shot but if we do, then it will be on Tuesday (1 st ) and would save us a trip to TIVERTON TOWN for the re-arranged league clash. MATT SYSUM has joined us from Evesham United. A central defender, he began his career at Gloucester City and he has also played for Hardwicke and was captain of Cirencester when they opened the 2012/13 season here. You may recall that they won by the only goal scored by JAMIE REID! 25 year old LUKE BALLINGER was with us before in 2007/08 and left us for Frome Town. He scored their 3 rd goal when the Robins defeated us 3-1 in the play-offs. He has played for Melksham & Chippenham and is captain of the England Futsal side. As it stands, we have a busy first week of October, after next week s scheduled clash at Ladysmead. THATCHAM TOWN are here on Saturday 5 th in the Preliminary Round of the FA Carlsberg Trophy. Calor League newcomers STRATFORD TOWN, promoted from the Midland Alliance are here on Tuesday 8 th, and hot-shots NORTH LEIGH could prove a handful on Saturday 12 th. There s usually plenty of goals when The Millers visit and they have been finding the net regularly already this season. Three games in a week at the Glass Consultants UK Stadium then, but remember all could change depending upon replays in the FA Cup and FA Trophy games. If you wish to travel to Hampshire, there are still a few places up for grabs on the teamcoach. It s a great atmosphere travelling with the team. Why not give it a go? Just contact DANNY WEST on Thanks everyone for your support.. So, remember the cry COME ON THE FIELD Our two recent signings, MATT SYSUM and LUKE BALLINGER have not been introduced to you, so here are a few facts about both players, that you might find useful.. 9 SPOTLIGHT This is TAUNTON TOWN S 12 th season in the Southern League, since winning promotion from the Screwfix Western league in 2001/02, when they finished runners-up. Their league placings in that time, all in the Western/Division One West or/ South & West, have been 10 th, 15 th, 17 th, 18 th, 5 th, 18 th and 20 th. That best placing of 5 th was in 2006/07, when they lost the Play-off final 0-2, to Swindon Supermarine. In 2009/10, they again finished in 18 th place, 9 th in 2010/11, 17 th in 2011/12, and 18 th in 2012/13. The present Taunton Town Football club was formed in December 1947 by a few local businessmen and played their first friendly fixture during Easter They then played on a number of grounds such as, Mountfields, French Weir, Victoria Park, Huish Old Boys and finished up at Denman s Park, Haines Hill. Having joined and played in the Somerset Senior League, 1953 became a notable year. The Town club gained admission into the Western League and moved into Wordsworth Drive, their present home, on a lease agreement with the Taunton Borough Council. In recent years, the club have made numerous attempts to relocate, but have always failed to obtain the necessary planning permission and it meant that work had to be carried out to ensure that their subsequent promotion would be assured. Their ground now fits the bill should they progress to the Premier division. The club struggled financially and depended heavily on a very active supporters club during the late 50 s and early 60 s. The 1968/69 season saw an upsurge in the club s fortunes with manager Doug Hillard securing the Western League Championship for the first time. During the middle 70 s, Ron Gingell became manager and they finished as runners-up for four consecutive seasons. The 1970 s was also highlighted by the club purchasing the ground from The Taunton Borough Council and the installation of floodlights. During 1977, the club gained promotion to the Southern League (Southern section) and in 1979 transferred to the Midland section with the opening of the M5 Motorway. This came as a result of the re-organisation of the leagues, following the formation of the Alliance League (Conference). The administration of the club was transformed in 1981 with the club becoming a Limited Company. The new board soon found that Southern League football was too expensive and dropped down into the Western league at the end of season 1982/83. It was another seven years before the Championship pennant returned to Wordsworth Drive. This time Keith Bowker s team was successful. Under manager Terry Rowles, the team battled their way through to the Final of the FA. Vase at Wembley in May 1994 only to cruelly lose to Diss Town in extra time. Russell Musker was appointed in November 1994 and so began a very successful period for the club finishing in the top three during his first year. Champions in season 1995/96, runners-up for the next two seasons, then back to Championship wins in 1998/99, 1999/2000 and again for the third consecutive year in 2000/01. To cap it all, another FA Carlsberg Vase Final appearance - this time at the magnificent Villa Park Stadium, played on Sunday 6 th May 2001 when the club finally lifted the FA Carlsberg Vase Trophy after beating Berkhamsted 2-1!! This ended a sequence of 18 defeats in cup finals since the 1950 s and in 2003, the club lifted the Somerset Premier Cup with a 2-1 win over Yeovil Town. After a brief period, in 2005, with Peter Beadle as manager, Gary Domone took over the reins and the club enjoyed another SPC victory in 2005/06, with a 3-2 win over Mangotsfield United. Like everyone in non-league football, the club has suffered financially with falling gates, together with the fire that destroyed their social clubhouse at the start of the 2011/12 campaign. Ian Jones took over as manager from Gary Domone, but when he too left the club, Paul West took hold of the reins in May As a former player, who tasted FA Vase success in 2001, he helped to lift the club from the disappointment of the previous three seasons. Following on from last season s manager, Paul Milsom, LEIGH ROBINSON, is now at the helm with MARTYN ROGERS as his Assistant. Tom Harris is now Club President, Kevin Sturmey is Chairman with Andy Power as Company Secretary. FIELD REVIEW - 3

13 WE VE MET BEFORE Saturday 16 th November 1996 Wordsworth Drive, Taunton, Somerset SCREWFIX WESTERN LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISION TAUNTON TOWN...0 MANGOTSFIELD UNITED 1 Attendance: 411 It was perhaps rather fitting that this match should be decided by a player who had played for both sides. ANDY PERRETT grabbed the 89 th minute decider to give The Field the points. Manager TERRY ROWLES was back at the helm at Cossham Street, and was paying a return visit to the place where he had brought so much success to The Peacocks, culminating in a very famous day at Wembley. Taunton boss Russell Musker had already signed Mangotsfield s RICHARD THOMPSON, but he was ineligible to play in this match. History also shows that DOUG HILLARD was once manager of both clubs, in their early Western League days, and the clubs have met numerous times in their history. On this particulatr day, goalkeeper IAN JONES made his debut for The Field as did a young striker from Portishead, NICK FROST. Teams were: TAUNTON TOWN (as programmed) 1. Mark Coombe, 2. Tiv Lowe, 3. Tony Fortt, 4. Derek Fowler, 5.Dave Ewens, 6. Ben Rowe, 7.Alex Crook, 8. Mark Cutler, 9. Mark Loram, 10. Damon Palfrey, 11. Nigel Jarvis. Subs: Richard Hill, Martin Underhay, Paul Hirons. London born Kidd has also had success, in the ring, winning several belts over the years. The bout will be contested over six rounds of five minutes under traditional British Wrestling rules of two falls or a knockout. DAINE O CONNOR, who during his spells with us, always struggled to find the net, is now with BRIDGWATER TOWN and has bagged two goals in important games, just as he did when leaving us before, for Paulton Rovers, and couldn t stop scoring! One of those goals was vital as The Robins downed Taunton 2-1 in the FA Cup replay. What s the bet he will score against us when the teams meet? Also down at Fairfax Park are, GERAINT BATER, JAMES PILLING, DEAN GRIFFITHS, MITCHELL PAGE & SAM ALEXANDER. Only recently, another ex- Mango to join The Robins was TOM WARREN, who after leaving Yate Town in the summer, had started the season with Shortwood United. Ex Mango, KARIM RENDELL is at WINTERBOURNE UNITED this season and a week or so ago, he was called in to action in goal! Keeper Tom Sheppard was injured and were a goal down when Karim took over. He kept a clean-sheet too as Winterbourne won 2-1! Pictured left, MUSC Chairman DAVE WILCOX hands over a cheque for 1500 to Finance Director MARTIN PREEDY, for monies raised recently by MUSC. It will be used to help the club make some changes to the physio room. Weekend results in Division One South & West saw a few surprises. Paulton Rovers trounced fellow promotion-chasers Merthyr Town 5-2, North Leigh climbed into third place with a 3-1 win at tonight s visitors, Taunton Town. Yate Town won 2-1 at Cinderford Town, Clevedon climbed off the bottom of the table by beating Guildford City 2-1, leaving them at the foot of the table instead, but in front of just 84 hardy fans. Mind you, there were only 108 at Cossham Street also! Thatcham Town drew 1-1 with Evesham United and Wimborne Town & Stratford Town finished 3-3. Shortwood United and Tiverton also drew 3-3, and with only 80 fans watching, one wonders if Tivvy brought anyone with them! Bishops Cleeve won 4-0 at Didcot, Cirencester were 1-0 winners at Fleet Town and Bridgwater s rush to the top continued with a 3-1 victory at Godalming Town. FIELD REVIEW -8

18 WHAT THE PAPERS SAY More quotes now from the back end of last season: THE EFFORT THAT THE PLAYERS HAVE SHOWN TO GET TO 54 POINTS IS UNBELIEVABLE. WE HAVE BEEN REALLY UNLUCKY THIS YEAR AND I AM GUTTED. The words of Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson, as quoted in The Sun on 6 May 2013, after the Posh went down 3-2 at Crystal Palace in added time & were relegated to League One. Maybe in some ways, Peterborough WERE unlucky the free kick that led to Palace s 3 rd goal was highly debatable as the Posh defender played the ball first, but then again, every side in the land will get some decisions go against them & others will go their way. That s football! Peterborough had some great results once they got their act together, even beating Cardiff twice & for a while, they looked capable of beating anyone. So why did they get relegated? That s easy they lost their first 7 games in a row! That s where things went pear-shaped & despite valiant efforts during the rest of the campaign, it wasn t quite enough to save them. But at least they put up a fight when going down THE WOLVES FANS WERE ABSOLUTELY MAGNIFICENT JUST IMAGINE WHAT THEY D BE LIKE IF I COULD GET IT RIGHT! Poignant words from Wolves boss Dean Saunders, as quoted in The Sun on 6 May 2013, after his side were doomed to League One following a 2-0 loss at Brighton. Heck, Saunders quote sounds like an admission of failure in itself, doesn t it? Obviously, the board at Molineux thought so too, because 48 hours later, they sacked him! IF OUR SHEIKH WANTED TO, HE COULD BUY WIGAN, AND I M TALKING ABOUT THE WHOLE TOWN, NOT JUST THE B****Y FOOTBALL CLUB. The words of an unknown, but arrogant Man City fan, as quoted in the Sunday Mail on 12 May 2013 to a Mail reporter before the previous day s FA Cup Final as the masses of City fans swaggered down Wembley Way as if it were their second home. Well, everyone loves a giant-killer, unless you happen to be on the losing side, so I suspect most neutral fans around the country were more than happy when Wigan scored that late goal to send the aristocrats of the Etihad back up north with their tails between their legs! Well done Wigan. The game reminded me of Sunderland 1, Leeds 0, way back in the 1973 Final, also won by a giant-killer! And on the subject of the FA Cup Final, it looks as if the 5.15 kick-off might just be here to stay. Recorded viewing figures on ITV & ESPN peaked at 8.58m, the highest FA Cup Final TV audience figures for some years, proving that although many of us traditionalists would prefer a 3pm kick-off, a 5.15 kick-off appears to be more popular with the TV viewer. I suppose you can get all your chores done during the day & then sit down to watch the match in the early evening. So much for tradition! THEY SHOULD GET THE RESPECT THEY DESERVE NOW BECAUSE THEY HAVE BEEN FANTASTIC. THEY HAVE BEEN AT THE SHARP END ALL SEAS0N THIS WAS THEIR 59 TH GAME AND THEY LOOKED AS FRESH AS DAISIES. The words of Celtic boss Neil Lennon, as quoted on the BBC Scotland website on 27 May 2013, following his side s 3-0 Scottish FA Cup Final v Hibernian the 36 th time they d won the trophy. Well, when you have no SERIOUS opposition over their (strangely-set up) 38-match league programme, apart from an occasional defeat here & there (because their opponents always treat matches v Celtic as cup finals in themselves), it s no wonder Celtic ended their season as fresh as daisies! They will probably win both the League & Cup this season as well & will have no real rivals to fear until Rangers are back up there with them. Besides, look at it this way too would Neil Lennon still be Celtic manager if he had FAILED to win the SPL title in May? I doubt it! I DON T THINK IT S MY RESPONSIBILITY AT THIS STAGE TO ANSWER FOR A PERFORMANCE AS BAD AS THAT. The words of Stuart Pearce, as quoted on the BBC website on 13 June 2013 after the utterly shambolic England U-21 defeat v Israel, giving us 3 defeats out of 3 in a tournament to forget. Yes, the players were to blame too, but the manager always carries the can, doesn t he??!! FIELD REVIEW -10

19 DAVE S DIARY - 1 GOOD AFTERNOON EVERYONE & WELCOME TO THE GLASS CONSULTANTS UK STADIUM for tonight s Calor League clash against our old friends from TAUNTON TOWN. Thank you for your attendance tonight & for buying this programme. The Peacocks are old rivals of ours, of course, & we had many a tussle with them back in our Western League days between 1973 & In fact, I think we once went about 13 seasons (!) between 1983 & 1996 (or thereabouts, without me checking) without beating them at all in a league fixture, but at least our Southern League record against them is better! Having said that, the Somerset boys took 4 points off us last season, including a 2-1 win here at Cossham Street, so that s something we need to address this evening. Like ourselves, the Peacocks find themselves in the bottom half of the table tonight & they will be looking to bounce back after Saturday s 3-1 home loss by North Leigh, so a tough encounter is expected! Please, then, give Our Boyz all your support this evening as we try to pick up another 3 points to follow on nicely from Saturday COME ON THE FIELD!! AND YES, WHAT A RESULT WE HAD ON SATURDAY AGAINST SWINDON SUPERMARINE! That was always going to be a hard fixture for us, seeing as Supermarine were league leaders, but to get a 1-0 win against them was very pleasing indeed. Yes, we know that, especially in the first half, they had the bulk of the possession & they seemed to be coming at us from all angles, but they still didn t score & we dug in well against them. Our own overall performance was better after the break & even though Swindon still probably had the bulk of the possession, they couldn t break us down. OK, a terrible pass from a Swindon defender gifted us the winning goal on 73 minutes, but LEWIS POWELL took the opportunity well to bury his shot into the net. Prior to that, KEVIN SAWYER did incredibly well to keep out a point-blank effort from a neat Swindon move & perhaps you could sense after that, well, it might just be our day and so it proved! MANAGER RICHARD THOMPSON TWEAKED THE SIDE A LITTLE BEFOREHAND, so it was good to see the likes of LIAM MONELLE & LUKE BALLINGER start & recent signing MIKE SYSUM was impressive at the back as well, but the bottom line is that EVERY SINGLE PLAYER OUT THERE gave 100% (or more) effort to produce a battling performance to earn us a very hard-earned win. Well done then to KEVIN, NEIL, SHAUN, ALEX, MATT, CHARLIE, LIAM, ASHLEY, DAVE, LEWIS & LUKE for a great result. Amazingly, we used no subs at all, but KYLE, JAMIE, RYAN, TOM & JOSH played their part as well in supporting their team-mates, so WELL DONE ONE AND ALL! IT S JUST A PITY THAT THE GATE FIGURE WAS ONLY 108, but we talk about low gates all the time, but you just have to accept it & move on & hope that things will improved as the season rolls on. I notice that our old rivals over at Clevedon Town had just 84 v Guildford City, which must be one of their lowest gates in recent times for a Saturday home league game, so clearly, it s not just us! AND SO ALL ROADS THIS WEEKEND LEAD TO EASTLEIGH IN THE FA CUP! Their spy watched us on Saturday he introduced himself to us in the Club Shop & said he actually lives in LUTON (!!) and so, by now, they will; know a little bit more about us & the determination within the squad. We go there as TOTAL UNDERDOGS, but as you know full well, anything can happen in the FA Cup! 24 THAT WAS THE MONTH THAT WAS: 1 Time now for a nostalgic look back at a particular month in recent or not-so-recent years & see how we fared in that period. Today we look at OCTOBER MUFC RESULTS IN OCTOBER MANGOTSFIELD UNITED 4, EGHAM TOWN 0 DMLWD MANGOTSFIELD UNITED 2, BRISTOL CITY 4 GFA TROPHY ROTHWELL TOWN 3, MANGOTSFIELD UNITED 1 DMLWD PAULTON ROVERS 4, MANGOTSFIELD UNITED 1 (aet) SOMERSET CUP MANGOTSFIELD UNITED 0, BROMSGROVE ROVERS 0 DMLWD MANGOTSFIELD UNITED 2, PAULTON ROVERS 4 DMLWD BEDWORTH UNITED v MANGOTSFIELD UNITED Aband d 35m YA TE TOWN 3, MANGOTSFIELD UNITED 1 S LEAGUE CUP MANGOTSFIELD UNITED 2, OXFORD CITY 1 DMLWD THE SEASON OVERALL Arguably, this was MUFC s greatest ever season promotion from one rung of the Southern League to the next level up, and when you consider that it took us 28 years just to get out of the Western League & then just 5 seasons to get promoted again, it proves that it was a massive achievement for the Club as a whole. We remained top of the pile from January onwards & went 21 games without defeat before losing at home to Marlow in our final game with promotion already secured. THE GAMES IN QUESTION A hectic month began with an easy 4-0 home win over bottom club EGHAM TOWN without us having to play particularly well. The Surrey visitors lost their rag early on & had 3 players booked & one sent off all inside the first 15 minutes! An own goal from Duncan Patience (28) set us on our way, before SHANE HOBBS (45 & 75) & DARREN EDWARDS (47) completed the rout. Three nights later, we crashed out of the GFA Trophy at the first attempt, going down 4-2 at home to BRISTOL CITY, despite a spirited performance by the Boys in Maroon & Sky. DANNY HALLETT scored a rare goal after just 3 minutes, but City s pace was always a problem & Ludovic Cadima (42), Scott Brown (45) & Lee Miller (50) turned the tables on us in an 8-minute spell. DARREN EDWARDS made it 2-3 on 60 as we gallantly fought back, but Colin Skuse (87 & now at Ipswich) closed the coffin lid. Then things really began to go wrong. With previously-injured DAVID SEAL starting a month s holiday in Oz, we went down 3-1 at ROTHWELL TOWN in a bad-tempered game where things happened off the pitch just as much as on it. Dean Foley s free kick made it 1-0 after just 2 minutes & then JASON DRYSDALE was red-carded on 15 for a last-man foul. Danny Spencer s volley (44) made it 2-0, but DARREN EDWARDS (60) reduced the arrears with a penalty, only for another Dean Foley free-kick (65) to make it 3-1. To complete the day, 4 other Mangoes were booked, manager MARTYN GRIMSHAW was red-carded after the game & amid a bad atmosphere, no one connected with MUFC stayed very long afterwards & the team bus was on its way home by 5.15pm. Two nights later, we crashed out of the Somerset Premier Cup to the tune of 4-1 by PAULTON ROVERS, in a match we really did not need, following so soon after the events of Rothwell. DARREN EDWARDS fired us ahead (16), but the home side constantly pressured us. We lost LEE COLLIER with a suspected broken leg, but Dan Cleverley s header on 89 took the tie into extra-time. That s where we fell apart, with Cleverley (110 & 117) and Richard Perry (93) completing the rout. Things improved slightly the following week in a Battle of Defences, when we drew 0-0 at home to BROMSGROVE ROVERS, who saw more of the ball than we did, but couldn t finish & then it really all went pear-shaped 3 nights later when we lost to PAULTON ROVERS for the 3 rd time this term when they won 4-2 at Cossham St. Paulton keeper John Rendell was injured after 5 minutes & took no further part in the game. 27 THAT WAS THE MONTH THAT WAS: 2 CONTINUED FROM PREVIOUS PAGE Midfielder Andy Sandell (later with Bristol Rovers) went in goal, but we never tested him enough & our overall performance was poor. Danny Lewis (43 & 45) put the visitors ahead, but DREW SHORE s superb free-kick (57) reduced the arrears. Nick Bunyard s header (62) made it 3-1, but an own goal by Gary Powell (84) pulled one back before Richard Perry (88) finished us off. One to forget! The next game at BEDWORTH UNITED lasted all of 34 minutes before the atrocious conditions called a premature halt. For the record, a Lee Ross header put the Greenbacks ahead on 7 minutes & ROBBIE CLARIDGE levelled from close range on 21. Three nights later, we fielded a much- weakened side in the Southern League cup tie at nearby YATE TOWN, & we subsequently put in a poor showing on a night when the Bluebells dominated. Yate effectively won the game inside the first 6 minutes in which both Paul Metheringham & Mike Wyatt netted. Ex-MUFC player Matt Rawlins made it 3-0 on 71, & DARREN EDWARDS reduced the arrears with 3 minutes to go. The month ended with a better display in our 2-1 home win over OXFORD CITY. Jack Smillie put Oxford ahead on 20 minutes, but ROBBIE CLARIDGE equalised with a header less than a minute later. The winner finally came on 77 minutes when DARREN EDWARDS netted from the spot after GARY WARREN s strike had been handled on the line by Adam Durant who was duly dismissed. Meanwhile, there ll be more memories from TWTMTW again soon THE WORLD OF SOCCER Welcome to the WORLD OF SOCCER, the column that brings you news stories from around the globe. It s a short column today, so let s go straight into things with this story from GERMANY from last May..Now the nail-biting climax to Borussia Dortmund s win v Real Madrid in the CL proved to be too much for Borussia chairman Hans-Joachim Watzke. As his side clung on under a late onslaught from Real, Watzke locked himself in a Bernabeu Stadium toilet! Two late Real goals had seen the Germans 4-1 lead whittled down to 4-3 & Watzke knew that one more Spanish goal would dump his side out of the CL. He told the media, It seems we can only win this tie with drama.i went to the toilet for the final few minutes, locked myself in, covered my ears & just kept looking at my watch until I knew the game would be over. Well, it all worked on that occasion, but I wouldn t recommend it all the time! Staying in GERMANY, one of their non-league games made the headlines last May & the action is also on You Tube as well if you want to see exactly what happened. During the amateur game between Altona 93 & SC Vier-und-Marschlande, things took a farcical turn when a long-range effort from striker Patrick Westermann was spectacularly tipped over the bar by goalkeeper Marcel Kindler of Altona. The ball went over the goal, but rebounded off the crossbar of some American football goalposts just above and behind it, and hey presto, the ball came straight back on to the pitch. The referee waved play on and bizarrely, an SC Vier-und-Marschlande player then smashed the rebound into the net! Amazingly, the goal stood! Now back in May, of course, GERMANY had both clubs in the Champions League Final at Wembley, but the Bayern & Borussia fans knew full well to expect food-wise as they arrived in London. Henning Feindt, a reporter for Bild had had a trial run at Wembley the week before when he took in the League One play-off Final between Yeovil & Brentford. His review in Bild a few days later was far from glowing he described the hot dog sausages as full of fat and disgusting, as well as being unbelievably expensive at 6.60 per hot dog! We could have told him that beforehand it s called Rip-Off London prices & the Dick Turpins up there try to rip us ALL off, not just the Germans! As for the sausages, who knows? They probably weren t the best British banger you could buy, they were no doubt cheapo ones that even your dog would turn his nose up at. As for Herr Feindt, his Bild headline was Beware the Wembley Sausage, but he did at least praise the stadium & the atmosphere generated by the fans. Shame about the food though! More from the WOS again soon. FIELD REVIEW -16

29 THE SCILLY SEASON Graham Mills is based in St. Neots, Cambs. He produces the Eynesbury Rovers programme and pens articles for Bristol Rovers. He has very kindly passed on some very readable articles for the FIELD REVIEW. One chant that is occasionally heard from the terraces is Can we play you every week? This is usually heard when a team is being put to the sword. However, there is a place in England where two teams literally do play each other every week! Back in the late 1980 s I worked in Penzance and the company I worked for (then called WH Smith Wholesale) supplied newspapers and magazines to newsagents in the region. One of our customers at the time was Mumford s Newsagents on the Isles of Scilly. Located 28 miles off the South West coast of Penzance the Scilly Isles consists of 56 islands of which five are inhabited. Two thousand people live on those islands, 1600 on St Mary s the biggest island whilst the rest are spread across Tresco, Bryher, St Martin s and St Agnes. We used to send the newspapers and magazines to St Mary s via the ferry called The Scillonian or if the ferry wasn t sailing we would use the helicopter located at the heliport literally next door to our warehouse. (Sadly, no more Ed) Quite often telephone conversations were drowned out by the noise of a helicopter taking off or landing particularly in the summer when we had the windows open! During the winter months there was often no ferry or helicopter making the trip to St Mary s on a Sunday so we used to send all the Sunday newspapers to the island on Monday morning! I was fortunate enough to visit the islands on three occasions, each time during the summer months. Therefore I was unable to witness The Smallest League in the World. Let me explain. In the 1920 s there existed a competition called the Lyonnesse Inter-Island Cup which was a competition between the five inhabited islands. However, by the 1950 s only two clubs remained the Rangers and the Rovers. In 1984 the clubs changed their names to the Garrison Gunners and the Woolpack Wanderers and they continue to play each Sunday in the World s Smallest League. They play each other in a League competition every Sunday over a course of 17 games. They also compete for The Wholesalers Cup and The Foredeck Cup, which is played over two legs. Although as they both play at the same ground, The Garrison Football Field I can t see that there is much advantage in home and away legs! The season itself starts with the Charity Shield and is played from mid-november until the end of March. There is also an Old Men versus the Youngsters match on Boxing Day. Occasionally a combined Scilly Isles team travel to the mainland to play Newlyn Non Athletico and a team from Truro visits annually to play a combined team. At the start of each season the teams are picked in a school playground-like procedure. The two opposing captains sit down and pick new teams from the pool of available players to represent the yellow of the Gunners or the claret of Wanderers. The system works remarkably well. There is rarely a runaway winner and some titles have gone down to the last game of the season. One was settled on goal difference! However, like most island communities the Scilly Isles has its problems. With no sixth form college on St Mary s and little in the way of employment outside the tourist season most of the 16 year olds head for the mainland. Property prices are booming with homes being snapped up by holiday makers making it difficult for the locals to return. This means the Gunners and the Wanderers are usually made up of men in their mid to late 30 s. With numbers dwindling the league carries on. So if you re in The Isles of Scilly between mid-november and March take your football boots with you to the Garrison Field on a Sunday morning. You never know you just might get a game! 32 DOWN MEMORY LANE In 2002/03, our front cover featured DAVE ELSEY clashing with a Bristol Rovers player, from a preseason friendly. The Rovers player is well known to us now, although at that time he was not. It s NEIL ARNDALE, who is now in his eighth season with us and is currently the club s longest-serving player. This particular match was the last game of that season and finished as a 3-3 draw with Solihull Borough, before a gate of 234. It was our 3 rd campaign at Southern League level and, just like the first two seasons, proved to be successful. AndyBlack s exciting team scored 106 league goals and finished 6 th in the table. Five players scored 91 goals between them, Seal 38, Sims 20, Edwards 13, Pitcher 10, Elsey 10. Mark Summers gave us a 26 th minute lead and then a David Seal penalty, just before the break, made it 2-0. However, with just three minutes gone in the secondhalf, Paul Hunter reduced the arrears. Ellis Wilmot increased that to 3-1 with a rare strike, but goals in the 78 th and 79 th minutes from Hunter and Adam Cooper, gave The Boro a deserved draw, and they finished 4 th in the table. No Play-offs at this time. Merthyr Tydfil & Westonsuper-Mare were promoted to the Premier Division whilst Rocester & Racing Club Warwick were relegated. MANGOTSFIELD LINE-UP: 1. Paul Thompson, 2. Mark Summers, 3. Simon Clarke, 4. Scott Hendy, 5. Jason Drysdale, 6. Gareth Loydon, 7. Adam Sims, 8. Ellis Wilmot, 9. Jack Pitcher, 10. David Seal, 11. Steve Campbell Subs:Shane Hobbs (62), Dean Griffiths (73). Notable results that season was a 7-0 home thrashing of Gresley Rovers, a 6-0 away win at Rocester, a 5-1 win at Taunton and a 5-2 victory at Cirencester. Taunton were also crushed 7-1 at Wordsworth Drive in the league cup, Evesham were beaten 5-0 at Cossham Street and Swindon Supermarine were also gunned down 5-1 at home. 33 AN ALTERNATIVE HISTORY OF BRISTOL SPORT THE BLACK UN A SIDEWAYS SLANT BYJONTY MORGAN Bristol Soccer has been well served over the years in the pages of various sports newspapers. The most popular period was undoubtedly the 1920s to the early 1960s when coloured newspapers were all the rage. The favourite read of Bristol s sports enthusiasts was the Black Un. This was a uniqure chapter in the annals of newspaper history for the Black Un was totally one colour, comprising of black ink printed on black paper. This concept was first tried in Liverpool in 1925, but died a death because Everton and Liverpool fans couldn t find where their respective teams were in the table after Saturday s matches; so considered the paper useless. It was then that the Black Un switched to Bristol and immediately prospered, because Bristol soccer fans wanted to avoid seeing the tables like the plague every Saturday tea-time. The Black Un swiftly gained an enviable reputation for unbiased reporting and also appealed to illiterates, a group of people previously ignored by Bristol s sports newspapers. Depressed people(another term for Bristol s sports enthusiasts) loved the Black Un and a successful newsstand operated for many years on Saturday nights on the local suicide spot at Clifton Suspension Bridge. In 1934, however, the newsstand moved to the Portway below the bridge because of falling custom. Proof, if any were needed, of the Black Uns popularity came in 1937 when a recorded seventy thousand applications were received for the recently vacated post of proof-reader. In 1938 The Black Un won the World Sporting Press award For Innovation for its photographic coverage of night time matches in the days before floodlights. Despite this, The Black Un received a tremendous blow later that same year when officials at Tem ple Meads Station banned the sale of the totally black newspaper after the tragic case of Bournemouth fan Peter Carvery came to light. He d been reading The Black Un on Platform Four after watching his team when he was run over and killed by the Bristol-to-Cardiff express train after the driver mistook him for the entrance to the Severn Tunnel. The end of The Black Un came during the blitz in when for some strange reason Bristolians began sticking copies of the sports paper in their windows to deter air-raids. It was reasoned that if the Germans could see what a poor state Bristol sport was in, they would leave the place alone and drop their bombs somewhere else, where they d have greater effect. This objective wasn t terribly successful, but it did deter a lot of people from converging upon the local newsagent every Saturday evening, when they could simply view a framed copy of the latest edition of The Black Un outside the home of a neighbour or nothing. Drastic measures were required to keep the paper afloat. The paper was measured and found to be too big. A reduction in size was ordered to prevent it in future being mistaken for the entrance to the Severn Tunnel, or being used as blackout material. Unfortunately, the reduction in size failed to reduce the problems associated with it. Readers of the paper found themselves regularly struck by golf balls, especially if they had long pointed noses. It was a ridiculous situation and could not be allowed to continue. Thus The Black Un folded, leaving just The Pink Un and Green Un to provide a less realistic picture of Bristol sport. There is now excellent up-to-the-minute sports coverage on Radio Bristol, but before the advent of this radio station, several attempts were made to provide coverage, which included a tin can and a long piece of string connected to another tin can at the studios in Kingsdown, whenever there was an outside broadcast. The benefits of this system meant that subscribers would not need to buy a washing line there would be no interference from lightning except when any washing on the line had been bleached and it became much easier to hang street decorations in Bristol at Christmas. 37 AND ANOTHER THING!! -1 Plenty to chat about today, so let s crack on without further ado: FIRST BATCH OF QUICKIES: Transfer Deadline Day (TDL) what a soap opera it was, but why is it clubs still have to use fax machines?? Fax machines are a thing of the past, so why can t they use like normal people??... It was quite amusing, though, the day after TDL, to see a bloke walk through town with a Man United shirt on and a serious Fellaini hair-do..or was it just a wig??...and don t you think it s wrong that these agents make MILLIONS out of these big transfers, and the little transfers, come to that? The 2 smug Gareth Bale agents on TV looked like a right pair of shifty car dealers that you wouldn t trust as far as you could throw them, yet these leeches take MILLIONS out of the game & that s WRONG. If players want agents, then THEY should pay the agents their fee themselves, not the clubs concerned & at the same time, the FA should bring in some rule to automatically take 5 or 10% from every transfer fee paid & put it back into the game where it is needed most and that s not in the pockets of agents who don t deserve it. SO FA CHIEF GREG DYKE WANTS ENGLAND to reach the 2020 Euro Semi Finals & to actually WIN the 2022 World Cup and in Qatar too, of all places! It would be so easy to ridicule those targets as being something from Fantasy Island, but I won t. Did anyone in 1956 think we d win the World Cup 10 years later, albeit in our back yard?? No, so let s not knock the man s dream right now. He was right, however, about the fact that there are too many foreigners in the top levels of our professional game (and lower divisions too) & young English talent is slowly being stifled, which affects the national team. It s an old argument & one that s been gathering pace for maybe years now, but nothing has been done to alter the situation. Then again, reducing the number of foreign players/foreign club owners is more about politics than just sport, so it s a tough one to call, but we have got to start doing something about it NOW, but don t ask me what or how! But whatever happens, we ll always have one big problem FIFA and/or UEFA management. I don t expect Step Ladder or his French sidekick Platini to still be in charge of the world game in 9 or 10 years time, but even if they re not around, then one or more of their anti-british/english stooges will be, so they will always be a thorn in our side. That s another job for our people then it s not just about sorting out the number of foreign players in our game, it s also making sure that the next lot of FIFA/UEFA bosses sing from the same song sheet as ourselves, unlike the present pair of dodgy characters! WAYNE ROONEY S CUT FOREHEAD! Well, I m sure he was gutted to miss the 2 recent England qualifiers, but we re told by the doctors that there was no way he could have played. Maybe it really was a bad wound, but today, everyone s scared to death of the dreaded Health & Safety and insurance policies for our top players must cost millions, so it s all about money too as if we didn t know that already! Bottom line is, though, that the days of seeing the likes of Terry Butcher or Paul Ince give their all for England with bandaged foreheads & faces covered in blood are long gone, but you can t help wondering what the doctors would have said if Rooney had received the cut 4 days before the Champions League Final? He d have played, no question with his fancy headband. SECOND BATCH OF QUICKIES: Well, assistant editor Dave S has seen it all now! He was down at Bristol Manor Farm the other week & you get accustomed there to see the trains go by, or even a ship now & again, but not a microlight! Yes, one of those flying things took off from near The Creek just before the game & flew over the ground at maybe just 100 feet up! I don t know, some people will do absolutely anything to avoid paying to get in, won t they?...meanwhile, what a plonker Wales manager Chris Coleman missed his team s flight to Macedonia because of a passport issue. That means he forgot it and ended up flying out later to re-join his squad. So what s the phrase I m looking for? You can take the footballer out of the man, but you can t take the man out of the footballer. Well, something like that anyway Now with most non-league clubs gates down, I read recently that down in Cornwall, Falmouth Town had their lowest-ever league attendance of 49 for a midweek game v Launceston they normally average around 100 And it was amusing to see that Moldova sub come on v England the other week, the one with the very outstanding black eye. Wasn t done in a warm-up encounter with Rooney, was it? (Continued) FIELD REVIEW -23

In late June, an old couple decided to renew their wedding vows & so they held their reception in a FISH & CHIP SHOP, the Wetherby Whaler, in Guiseley, Leeds! No real shock there, cos Guiseley is where the first Harry Ramsden s fish & chip restaurant was opened in 1928, so clearly, they love their fish & chips in that part of West Yorkshire and quite right too. Meanwhile, I wonder what the 60 guests had for the reception meal in late June??? Easy with the batter please. (2) SO WHICH PHRASE IS MORE CORRECT?? This is all down to choice anyway, but if you re talking about something that happened yesterday evening, I think most people tend to say last night.. but I notice that Geoff Twentyman on Radio Bristol regularly uses the phrase last evening, which is not used that much, is it? Or does it not matter anyway? (3) NEW BEATLES ALBUM THIS AUTUMN? They split up 43 years ago, but get ready to see The Beatles at No 1 again soon, if the rumours are true, as there s been talk lately of a Live At The BBC Volume 2 album with some more hidden gems to tantalise us all. For those of a certain younger generation, you might say, Beatles? Can t see what the fuss is all about & that s perfectly understandable. Answer? If you can remember the 60s, then you d KNOW what the fuss was all about because the Fab 4 DEFINED that decade TROUBLE AT THE RECENT CITY v ROVERS GAME: Like many Bristolians, I was sickened & disgusted by what happened at the end of the game. What an advert for Bristol for the masses to see on national & global TV!I listened to it all on the radio we don t all have Sky Sports, you know and I saw the goals & pitch invasion on TV later. The police had plenty of footage & photos to identify EVERY SINGLE MORON who went on to that pitch & though they ve caught a fair few already, there s still more out there to bring to justice. No one should have been on the pitch at the end, for whatever reason. They kept saying on the radio that it was a small minority intent on causing trouble, but 500 or so on the pitch out of nearly 18,000 is not s small minority, it s a sizeable minority. I did hear on the radio also that one bloke had been knocked over by a police horse well done the police horses then! They are beautiful animals & deserve better than having to patrol football grounds. Then I heard another story of a father & 16-year-old son who were 100% neutral, but just wanted to watch the game. They were sat among fervent City fans who cheered wildly when the first goal went in & when those fans noticed that the father & son only applauded the goal politely, it was assumed that they were Rovers fans & the son was then punched by one of the moronic City thugs, and the pair of them got out of there straight away before anything else happened. Will that father & son ever go to City again? I doubt it. The thing is, some tanked up City fans clearly intended to go on to the pitch at the end, regardless of the score, but how do you stop a few hundred people from going on to the pitch when they are determined to do so? You can t! THIRD BATCH OF QUICKIES: It was interesting to watch one of those old Big Match Revisited programmes on ITV4 the other week it was from January 1979 & featured (1) Stoke v Oldham, played on several inches of snow with an orange ball (Stoke led 2-0 at the break & the referee then abandoned it). and (2) Sheffield Wednesday v Arsenal, played on a rock-hard icy pitch & it ended 1-1, but the game was held up for a few minutes at one stage because Arsenal keeper Pat Jennings was continuously being pelted with snowballs! Naughty boys. Meanwhile, have you noticed when watching England, that Roy Hodgson s expression never changes?? He looks as mind-numbed as the rest of us But well done to Frank Lampard on getting his 100 caps for England. That s no mean feat in this day & ages when so many England international players look just average. No doubt his old West Ham fans will greet him in their usual venomous way as they seem to for all their old players when he goes there in November with Chelsea And we know that Wales & Scotland are at a very low ebb these days, and it s time for big changes at the Republic of Ireland too (OK, they re not strictly British, but what the heck ), but spare a thought for poor Northern Ireland, 3-2 losers at Luxembourg (!) on 10 September. What a come down. Luxembourg aren t much better than the likes of Liechtenstein, Andorra & San Marino & yet years ago, Northern Ireland gave us players like George Best, Pat Jennings & Derek Dougan. Sadly, those sort of players aren t out there any more THE FIELD MARSHALL FIELD REVIEW -24
