Didn t see him was the reply... Mal stepped up and put the free kick high into the box, with Colin running on and placing a nice header into the bottom corner to make it 1-0 (a few groans from both sides) as not many people had picked Colin to score this year and money was on the line.. Report by Neil Gardner bumpy. A terrible field. We were missing a few players but managed to field 13 with Neil and Mal on the side-line. As we were missing our main centre midfield I let Nigel and Noel know that they would probably be playing a full game in the middle but within 10 mins Noel had pulled up lame and called for a sub. Neil was the quickest to sub on and managed to get himself playing centre mid with Nigel. Within seconds of coming on Neil had a nice shot from outside the box, which was just pushed around the corner by their keeper. From the corner Nigel had an easy header straight in front but managed to put it over the top. Rest of the first half was much the same with most of the shots going wide and neither keeper having to do a great deal. The wind was just starting to pick up and now it was our turn to play into the wind which is when we play our best, as we keep the ball and play our total football style by passing the ball around and using our speed and skill to get down the other end of the field. We were starting to create a few chances and a few fines ($). University were coming into this game after a hard earned draw with North Wellington and a reason- able start to the season. A win today would see them leapfrog Tawa in the table. Tawa would have to play better than the week before against Island Bay to get a result in this game. Thankfully the weather conditions for the game were the complete opposite of last week, much to the relief of everyone at the ground. Tawa made their customary slow start to the game, conceding a number of corners but they looked threatening on the break and solid in possession during the middle period of the first half. So-Rey was presented with a couple of excellent chances during this time and unfortunately couldn t capitalise, however both So and Mohammed played a large part in the first goal of the game, setting battle and there were a few nervous moments without anything clear cut being created. With five minutes to go Tawa put the game to bed, a good move led to a searching ball into the penalty area from Mohammed, Jake s attempt at converting completely wrong footed the keeper and the ball ended up in the back of the net. 8 TAWA "The game then began to get a bit niggly with a few yellow cards being handed out and a few rash challenges beginning to fly in.." BEARS VS OLYMPIC 30 April 2016 Wellington Olympic 1 vs Tawa Bears 2 The Bears took on Wellington Olympic in game 5 of their season. After a close game the previous Monday which ended in a draw, the lads were keen to get back to winning ways. However with 7 members of the squad out for various reasons, the team had a patch work appearance to it. The game started (like all games so far this season) at a cracking pace and was end to end. On a pitch that had the bounce of a basketball court, both sides struggled to keep the ball under control. The Bears did have the ball in the back of the Olympic net before the half was out through a Cam Riley header from a free kick, however this effort was ruled out for offside. An even game and 0-0 at the break. The game started (like all games so far this season) at a cracking pace We made a couple of changes at half time but the game continued in the same pattern as the first half, lots of ball in midfield but no major chances for either team. The deadlock would be broken about 15 minutes into the half when Cam would direct a free kick past the Olympic goal keeper and into the net. 10 minutes later and the Bears would have a great chance to extend their lead from the penalty spot. Unfortunately we could not covert with the Olympic goalkeeper making the save and the score would remain at 1-0. This fired Olympic up and they would get their reward 10 minutes later with a ball from the left being converted at the back post. 1-1 with time running out. The game then began to get a bit niggly with a few yellow cards being handed out and a few rash challenges beginning to fly in as both sides chased the win. With 5 minutes to go the Bears would get the winner and hang on for another 3 points. At times it wasn't pretty but we got the win and banked 3 more point and that's what matters most. Mark Roberts worked hard up front all day earning himself man of the match honours. Report by Jeffrey Crosby 14 TAWA AFC TAWA AFC 15

9 TAWA MEN'S 2NDS VS PETONE "As a show of character though, Tawa did press forward in added time..." Tawa v Petone Saturday 7th May Petone 4 - Tawa 4 Happily Tawa broke its run of poor starts and dominated the early exchanges against Petone, particularly down the right hand side where Richard Sims was running rampant and forced a number of early corners. Decent shots were put in by Richard, Drew Wild & Russell Kyne. At the other end things were reasonably quiet, with only the speedy Petone winger on the left causing any real problems for the Tawa defence. On 30 minutes Tawa finally got some reward for their dominance as Richard Sims broke into the box from the right and squared to Luke Martin who made no mistake with a great finish. Things got even better for Tawa a minute later when Brent Pankhurst broke forward from right fullback, gave a 1-2 move drove into the penalty area and with a brilliant finish into the top corner made it 2-0 to Tawa. Just as things seemed to have really turned Tawa's way, in the 34th minute Petone built from the left and dribbled into the box with Tawa seemingly having things covered, Andrew Tang at the near post slipped over allowing a shot from 5 meters out giving Ken Williams in goal no chance. Not to be outdone, in the 36th minute Neil Yates for Tawa shot across the box from the left for Richard Sims at the back post to score another good goal for Tawa, for a deserved 3-1 lead. Unfortunately the action for the half was not over, as in the 39th minute the Petone left winger won the ball in midfield beat a couple of weak challenges and from well outside the penalty area curled a superb shot into the far corner that Ken could only get his finger tips to. Five goals in ten minutes was enough for the first half with Tawa probably being unlucky to only lead 3-2 at half time. The second half was much tighter with the teams really cancelling themselves out, with Petone having more possession but not creating a lot, except the odd excursion down their left, as the left winger was their only real threat. This threat lead to Petone's third goal in the 81st minute as he broke down the left, cut the ball across where a good shot left Ken with no chance. This really put Petone on top and they now put Tawa under real pressure and in the 90th minute once again broke down the left cut the ball across and even though Ken got a full hand to the ball Petone were 4-3 up, after being 3-1 down before half time. As a show of character though, Tawa did press forward in added time and won a free kick about 8 meters outside the area in a good central location. With free kick specialists Russell Kyne & Neil Yates over the ball and time all but up Neil Yates took the kick and superbly curled the ball over the wall and beating the diving Petone keeper to tie the match up at 4-4. Astonishingly Tawa then had another break into the Petone box, but just as they were about to shoot the referee blew full time and the 8 goal roller coaster was over with the spoils shared. Having not scored in their last two games played before this fixture, scoring four goals here with four different scorers was great for Tawa and once again they strung together some really good football, but training will continue to focus on putting together a full 90 minute performance. Report by Richard Jones TAWA DAD'S ARMY VS EASTBOURNE "Our defence held out well despite the early disadvantage..." 7 May 2016 Eastbourne Gs - 1 vs Tawa Dad s Army - 2 A late change in time and venue meant that Army had to play a makeshift defence in the first 25 minutes of this game (both centre backs coach the Tawa Grade 12 first team). Amazingly enough, we won the toss for a third time in a row and decided to take the slight wind advantage. It was unusual playing on a small field, probably the smallest we have played on. Our defence held out well despite the early disadvantage and we created the best chances in the first 30 minutes. Combined pressure eventually led to two goals, the first from Rames, a volley into the bottom left corner, and the second, a brilliant header from Lawsy from a corner kick. If we thought we were going to have it easy in the second half, we were wrong. A new player from Eastbourne came in and started to dictate the midfield. The second half was pretty much a defence and quick raid session but our counter attacks were swift and effective enough which meant Eastbourne could not commit too many to the front. Eastbourne eventually got a goal in the 70th minute, a well taken header from an almost perfect corner kick. After the goal, they were all over us but a well marshalled defence and commitment from all including our striker Phil blocking a point blank shot near the end ensured a victory for Army. 16 TAWA AFC TAWA AFC 17

Stokes Valley had most of the play in the first half and should have finished a couple of chances but with a couple of good blocks by Marty in goal and the defence scrambling to clear the ball we kept them out. Thanks to injured Kepi for refereeing and Bok from the third team we had enough numbers. From the kick off Kepi was having a hard time, every time we got the ball in their half there was a yell of offside; Peter's first game this season and he was making some nice runs confusing their defence and all they could muster was an off side ref as he ran past them. 12 TAWA BULLDOGS VS "The pitch looked like it was from another region of the world - maybe northern Africa or India?..." EASTBOURNE 30 April 2016 Eastbourne 4 vs Tawa Bulldogs 1 We headed to Cl Bishop Park in Eastbourne to take on the Eastbourne 1st team. They're another team promoted from Capital 5 last year but have had a good start to the season and sat below us in 3rd place on goal difference. The pitch looked like it was from another region of the world - maybe northern Africa or India? - where there is little rain, the ground rock hard and grass doesn't grow consistently. And the match began in crazy circumstances as we took the lead after only 5 seconds when their second pass took a bobble on the uneven surface, leading to a heavy touch and Nate Perkins - on loan from the 2nds - swooped in and lobbed the keeper from 30 yards out. The rest of the first half was a relatively even affair, as both teams tried to play some good football, yet were hindered by the tiny and uneven pitch. Eastbourne managed an equaliser halfway through and we headed to the break at 1-1. We were forced to make a change at the break as one of our number had to rush off to collect someone from the airport. In hindsight, this may have been a defining moment. As it turned out the second half was a one-sided affair, and unfortunately we were on the wrong side of it. Eastbourne had a field day, able to attack virtually at will and finding acres of space right across the park. The match ended 4-1, with Eastbourne scoring 2 late goals as we pushed forward for an equaliser. But that flatters us, because it could have been 8 or 9-1 if it wasn't for the outstanding display in goal by Tom Paver. He managed to pull off a host of saves that he had no right to be making and kept us in the match when the rest of us seemingly couldn't. Tom aside, it was a disappointing second half performance by our team, where we were out-thought, out-muscled, out-'reacted' and outpassioned. Eastbourne seemed to win every challenge and every 2nd phase ball, and in the process they taught us the level of football nous and passion that is needed to succeed in this league. Hopefully we can heed that lesson. Report by Chris Munro 22 TAWA AFC TAWA AFC 23

Weather glorious and conditions virtually perfect for a game of football, only comment to add is this fixture could have (should have) been played at 3pm (Olympic agreed) under sunlight rather than under floodlights but that s Capital Football's scheduling for you. Definitely beats being allocated to Onepoto 2 that doesn t exist and an unplanned trip to the pit otherwise known as the current state of Kura Park. Ascot Park is perhaps the best artificial surface in the Northern Suburbs currently, so can t complain on that front. The game gets off to a flyer for the Tawa Saints, catching Olympic virtually sleeping in the first few minutes with a good play down the right hand flank seeing Michael Jansen slot a well finished goal. This frazzled Olympic into action from being stunned mullets into finding their Energizer batteries. Their attack was well poised to pounce on any casual or sloppy Tawa defending with two fast paced strikers keen to exploit if given the opportunity. Unfortunately for the Tawa Saints, they did get an opportunity and a run down the left flank met with a heavy weighted cross sees the ball fall to Lyall Pou, who misses giving up a corner and instead puts away a powerful finish. The previously unbeaten Bears were wary of a Karori side that sat just below them on the table. As has been the way so far this season, the game started at a cracking pace and before we knew it we were 1-0 down. We would then lose Mark "Fat boy" Roberts to injury forcing an early change. Far from ideal and with us continuing to struggle to string together more than two passes, the first half was one to forget. 1-0 to Karori at the break. The Bears changed things at half time but our play didn't really improve. Further injuries forced Ben Soal to go in goal for the final 20 minutes and, but for a couple of great saves, it could have been worse. Karori would score again although with a strong hint of offside, the goal stood however and that's football. 2-0 to Karori at full time, a game to forget for us and we move on to try and get back on track next weekend. Hats off again to the defence who were with a dominant start from the Saints. solid all game and did not deserve to 7 May 2016 North Wellington Phatboys 2 vs Tawa Saints 2 Roll on and rock on the great sunny and warm weather! Yet again a glorious day for football on a fairly firm and even Alex Moore grass pitch. Perhaps only comment would be more rain required to get the grass growth back as resembled more of a cricket outfield than a football pitch in most parts. But certainly still in very good condition. On this occasion we stepped up to a bigger and more physical North Wellington team and this game was going to be the game of two halves. In the first half we seemed to be intimidated by the bigger and more physical opposition who furthered their dominance with getting away with fouling our players time after time. Ironically though, the opening goal would come from a Goalie error, who after receiving the ball from a defender, managed to muff a kick straight to their holding player striker who calmly slotted a finish into the roof of the net. The Yet again the classic interplay near halfway that lead onto a run from Michael Jansen finished in a goal, game on. The Saints then continued in the half to dominate position but just could not get the crucial goal. North Wellington continued with waves of counter attack but the Tawa Saints defence was solid and invariably shots on goal were either sprayed wide or high with only the concede the two goals. Nick Warren sweeping for the full game raised the bar on the day and thoroughly deserved his man of the match. Also key goals scored by Michael and Ledan who keep their goal scoring tallys counting on up. Rock on! As Mahmood pointed out at the final wrap, just need to continue the commitment and desire shown in the second half each week and be driven 26 TAWA AFC TAWA AFC 27

The day was fantastic for it wide. the coaches, sees the girls to amp us up!! University -2 After an explosive first 10 minutes from both teams it was a nicely taken corner from the Uni team that put Tawa 1-0 down. It was a valid fight for the next 20 or so minutes when a positive push from team. After an intense half time talk from both coaches the teams both went back on the field with strong intentions to collect the three points at the end of the day. The Tawa team put in a massive fight and were the dominant team in the second half having half a dozen shots on goal Albeit the 2-0 loss the Tawa team were definitely the dominant team in the end and were very unfortunate to have come away with no points this weekend. 16 TAWA MEN'S 2NDS VS MARIST 30 April 2016 Marist AFC 2 vs Tawa - 0 Kilbirnie Park Having been defaulted to by Miramar last week Tawa seconds were itching for this week s game and a chance to make amends for the loss to Naenae in the last game played. There was a southerly at Kilbirne so the temperature was cool and Marist had first use of the breeze. A portion of the field was taken up with a cricket block and all players struggled to keep their footing in this section of the park an area to avoid! Unfortunately Tawa got off to their traditional slow start and Marist had the better of the first 10 minutes although not really troubling the Tawa defence. Just as Tawa was coming into the game in the 24th minute Marist broke down the right and goalie Ken Williams made a smart save to deflect the ball onto the cross bar and away to safety. As play swung down the other end of the field Tawa debutant and centre striker, Luke Martin, had a shot that went straight to the keeper. This was the ignition point for Tawa as a series of shots came in with Nate Williams, Richard Simms, and David Hunt all having good efforts but unfortunately all wide of the goal. With all this pressure, it was disappointing that on 39 minutes a clearance from Tawa was intercepted by Marist and the ball fed to their right and the Marist striker at pace broke into the box and fired a lovely shot into the far corner past Ken who had no chance. There was a southerly at Kilbirne so the temperature was cool and Marist had first use of the breeze At half time Tawa talked about using the breeze and getting the ball wide and not turning over possession. Building on what they had done in the first half would surely be enough for Tawa to carry the day but unfortunately Tawa s early possession did not result in a lot of shots and Tawa was made to pay in the 64th minute when a Marist break resulted in Marist s second goal. With everything now to do, Tawa did string together a number of shots with Luke Martin, Luke Boyadijan, Mike Raemaker, Russell Kyne and Drew Wild all having shots but to be fair not really troubling the Marist keeper. The Marist keeper did resemble a fog horn though, with his encouragement to his team and appealing for fouls from 70 meters away kept things interesting, but he had the last laugh in keeping a clean sheet as Marist went on to win 2-0. Man of the match for Tawa was Andrew Tang. Andrew played as centre back and not only worked well at snuffing out Marist attacks, he also had a number of breaks out from defence beating several Marist players and setting up attacks. Thanks also to Scott Stephenson who stepped up from the third team and performed well at right back. This is a disappointing run for Tawa though, as they have played better football than their opponents in the last 2 games played, but have not scored and lost both games. Division 1 this year is shaping up as a very even grade so getting wins on the board will to very important and this will remain the focus for Tawa as a third of the season is now almost gone. 17 ACU2 VS KARORI SEALORDS "With a two goal deficit we rallied as best we could, but could still not find the target..." A few photos from the match! Thanks to Geordie! ACU2 0-2 Waterside Park. Preserving a clean sheet in the 1st half was no mean feat; but early in the 2nd a swift kick to the shins would have preferred to be lining up the spot-kick rather than defending it.
