The Blues remain unbeaten this season but the 1 1 draw was not without controversy. The Blues started strong and had most of the onto the post and we were denied again by the metalwork. Last week we came back in the second half so being a goal down didn t faze us, plus we had the wind advantage. Jeff was given a chance to play up front from the kick off and make up for that controversial goal. The message from box found the top corner and it was all tied up. There was to be one more refereeing controversy late in the game. With the blues hot on attack it looked like Dye was clearly fouled in the box. Petone won a corner midway through the half and a terrific free header was deflected off Jeff our keeper to the underside of the crossbar and landed well if only there was goal line technology in Masters Football we would know. Our ref thought it landed over the line and awarded the goal, our keeper thought otherwise!! (They have since had a beer and made up). We had a chance to go into halftime the side line was more ball to feet as the through balls were not working in the first half (he might be right but like we ever listen to Jon). Perhaps it was the rousing half time team talk, as the second half was definitely dominated by the Blues but the goals eluded us. Jeff had not one but two great opportunities to level the score, if only he had a left foot or if the goals were 6 inches to the right. It was our Nigerian striker that finally made the difference. After being out of position (and not offside), he found and didn t blow for the penalty. The match ended 1-1 but on reflection two points did go begging. To rub salt into the wounds many in the team remember last year s away fixture when their ref disallowed two of our goals. The Blues do pride themselves on playing fair. Looking forward to the rematch. Report by Glenn McStay 08 TAWA AFC TAWA AFC 09

Island Bay have had a good start to the season and are among the contenders to win the division this year and would have been confident coming into this game. Tawa were coming into this game off the back of an excellent win against Karori, full of confidence and looking for three points in this fixture. Unfortunately the weather conditions were appalling, a strong wind buffeted the ground and it was obvious before kick-off that the chances of good football being played was reasonably low. Again Tawa started the game slowly, the first 30 minutes was all Island Bay but there were no real clear cut chances; Island Bay had a lot of corners but Tawa dealt with them reasonably comfortably. Most of the attacking play was coming down Island Bay s left hand side but was dealt with well, a few shots from distance that Lance dealt with comfortably. A period of play midway through the second half saw Island Bay forcing three corners in a row and from the third one they scored. The corner was taken short and delivered into an area where Lance couldn t get a clean play at the ball, it was bundled in from close range and Island Bay were up 1-0. 8 TAWA The guys had plenty of opportunities - particularly Nate W working hard on the left wing and Gareth Bott making some fantastic runs in. BULLDOGS VS KCU With the coach away (getting drunk on holiday maybe?...) Nic Croad stepped up into the role, and by chance we were playing on the beautiful Redwood Park. It was a different look to the lineup with Me, Nate Williams and Brent Pankhurst coming into the side from the 2nd team. The team started brightly against a strong KCU side, with plenty of possesion and the team keeping their chances to a minimum. Perhaps on reflection the team should have held onto the ball a little better as the passes were more often than not played long into the corners, rather than working opportunities higher up the pitch. Apart from that, the guys had plenty of opportunities - particularly Nate W working hard on the left wing and Gareth Bott making some fantastic runs in, sadly being unsuccessful despite his efforts. The guys picked up the mantle and made life very hard for KCU a good shot from Nic Croad after a scramble from a corner. KCU managed to peg back a goal from a slightly messy corner. During the half time talk we mentioned the need for playing more thoughtful passes going forward with the ball, as the opposition wasn't putting much pressure on the ball carrier in the midfield. Moving into to the 2nd half the guys really picked up the mantle and made life very hard for KCU, with the team creating plenty of chances going forward. than one occasion, but the game had well and truly become Tawa's. If it wasn't for some sloppy finishing, this game could have been a whitewash to Tawa. Well done to Scotty, Nic and Josh for some very tidy finishes to put the result at a very credible 5-2. Special mention for Josh, who came on in the second half and promptly managed to dislocated/sprain his collarbone. He had a quick spell on the sidelines and managed to come back on and setup one goal and score another himself. Lots of positives for the guys, and they can look forward to a bright season if they continue to play in this fashion. 10 MEN'S 2NDS VS NAENAE Saturday 16 April - Naenae Park With their first win under their belt last week, Tawa was in confident mood before their game with Naenae. The pitch was rather strange though, with a large mound down in the north western end of the field and the pitch itself relatively short and wide it was the same for both teams though. Tawa suffered another slow start in this game and let Naenae immediately into the game and they dominated the opening 20 minutes, but it took 17 minutes before Ken Williams in goal was called on to make a save. After the first 20 minutes Tawa finally found a bit of cohesion and strung together a number of shots. Sam Lawrence headed over the goal from a pin point Richard Simms cross, followed quickly by a Matt Allan shot being blocked and Dave Hunt shooting just wide of the left hand post after "Tawa suffered another slow start in this game and let Naenae immediately into the game and they dominated the opening 20 minutes..." driving into the box from the right. Tawa was then lucky not to concede as an underweighted back pass to Ken was seized on by a Naenae attacker but Ken closed the angle and deflected the shot out for a corner. Tawa was in the ascendancy though and further shots followed as Richard Simms shot over the cross bar from just outside the area, Drew Wild forced a diving save from the keeper and then Matt Allan shot into the side netting. Just when it seemed that the Naenae defence had to give, on 37 minutes Tawa conceded a needless penalty for a challenge on the edge of the area. The spot kick was converted by Naenae with a good penalty into the bottom corner to Ken s right giving him no chance. This is how it stayed until half time. Early in the second half Tawa felt a little hard done by as Richard Simms appeared to be taken out whilst shooting but the referee elected to play on. After a period of mid field stalemate, Tawa again began to get the better of the game with Brent Pankhurst midway through the half coming through from fullback to create 2 good chances for himself, including calling on an acrobatic save from the Naenae keeper. Naenae were more restricted in the second half but still managed a few chances on the break, but Andrew Tang at centre back was ever present to thwart anything they threw at Tawa. The last 10 minutes became frantic as Tawa threw more players forward. In this time Tawa had about 8 shots, including 2 free kicks from about 10 metres outside the area, but with a combination of a packed Naenae defence and three excellent saves from the Naenae keeper the win went to Naenae as Tawa could not break them down to score. For his effective work on defence Andrew Tang was awarded man of the match for Tawa and in some credit to Tawa the man of the match for Naenae was their keeper. 12 quality long range strike beating Lance with Karori's first shot of the half. Both supporters and players would have felt he could have been closed down long before getting the chance to shoot. Heads didn't go down from Tawa, instead they showed determination to get back into the game and continued to attack Karori. A searching ball from Mo popping up on the left wing fed So-Rey, who got the ball under control and finished past the Karori keeper to make it 1-1 with about 20 to play. From this point on it looked as if Tawa were the more likely to find the winner and find it they did. After going close from Jason Bellman from a corner, Tawa managed to score a close range goal, Aaron providing the finish after good work from the front two. With only ten minutes to go Tawa held on with only a few nervous moments. The final result of 2-1 was a great one for Tawa, beating the league favourites and hopefully the momentum from this win will carry on to their next match with Island Bay. Karori looked a good side and will have felt they should have come away with more, especially after the opening 30 minutes and they will be around the top of the leader board at the end of the season. Capital Prems Round Three Tawa v Karori Saturday 16th April Venue: Redwood Park Tawa 2 vs Waterside Karori 1 Redwood Park was the setting for match day three as Tawa played host to Waterside Karori. Karori were coming into this game with two wins from their first two games and looking like the team to beat in this year s competition. Tawa needed to start strongly in this game, especially after conceding goals early the week before and Karori really tested them for the first 35 minutes. Crosses from deep were caught in the wind causing confusion in the penalty area for Lance and his defenders, with Karori looking the most likely to score from this type of play. Only a couple of fine saves and some dogged defending kept the score at 0-0. With ten minutes to go in the first half Tawa finally got a foothold in the game and started to assert some dominance, unfortunately during this time Mike Raemakers pulled up with a hamstring injury, he was replaced by So-Rey. The teams went into the sheds at 0-0 at half time with Tawa's late dominance providing encouragement to the supporters that they could get a result in this game. The second half was a complete reversal from the first, Tawa started the half as they finished the first, on the front foot and looking dangerous, especially breaking forward at pace with Mo and So-Rey really stretching the Karori defence. The pace was frenetic for the first 20 minutes, with solid tackles aplenty. But we weathered the storm and played our passing game with the odd breakaway. Great work from Clayton, Dele and Dye saw Dye slide in the cross to put us 1-0 up and that's how it stayed until half time. For the first part of the second half we looked good for our lead and could have had another when a free kick from Serdar narrowly float over the crossbar. But then disaster. Some poor refereeing (from an otherwise good ref) saw them catch us cold by taking a free kick very quickly and then it was 1-1. Even then we almost took the lead again with Dye hitting the bar, but it was not to be. 2 sucker goals later we lost 3-1. A score line that flattered them. Jess on the right had some brilliant runs down the far post leading to a few good strikes, sadly straight at the keeper. Leanne also had a stunner in the middle holding back, looking to take her chances from outside the 18 yard box. The second half had United coming back out strong. They kept us deep in our defence for the beginning of the second half. Great work by our defence held them out, with Roams strong in the air and Kirsten always there to clear the ball. Amelia made her debut for the season down the right side of defence and held her own against United s continuous attack down our flanks. Mary had a stunner in Goal with a particular save being heard echoing off her abs of steel. However all was not lost and the defence and midfield combined beautifully to bring the ball back out of our half and put some pressure back on. Alex ran rampant on the pitch charging down their defence and Lizzy had some good balls down the left hand flank. Jan as always was right in the middle of it all, thankfully only being offside once or twice this game, with her speedy little runs through their defence. We started off ok but with the strong cross wind we spent most of the time chasing the ball down the park to retrieve for our throw ins. They had a lucky break and managed to slot one past Big Mal in goal but we who passed a nice low cross to Steve to have an easy shot in the middle of the box. 3-2 Our fourth goal was similar, coming from a move down the left with Simon thinking about how he was going to throw it in while everyone else went and made a cup of tea.. He threw it to Neil s feet who laid it back for Simon to cross it to the middle of to finish. Some nice goals and good team work to come back from 2 nil down. Steve 3 Ray 1 Nigel 1 Report by Neil Gardner The second half was all vets controlling the possession and passing it around nicely. We used the width of the park and overlapping runs to wear down the united s defence. 26 TAWA AFC TAWA AFC 27

15 TAWA NEWSLETTER DAD'S ARMY VS SEATOUN ORIGINALS "Our attacks were also clever keeping the ball on the ground and actually creating the better chances" 23 April Tawa Dad s Army 2 vs Seatoun Originals 1 Windy conditions would be an understatement on the day. Army were lucky enough to win the toss and decided to use the wind advantage in the first half. This paid off handsomely and we were up by two in the twentieth minute. We kept pressing the Seatoun defence and they were struggling to keep Army out. The only thing that saved Seatoun from going down even further was a stop play for bad light. Porirua City Council forgot get the lights on and it is only with the help of Stephen King and his phone call to PCC that we managed to get the second half started. The second half meant a change of sides and advantage to Seatoun with the wind and they used it. However Army played brilliantly with great goalkeeping and a stout defence. Our attacks were also clever keeping the ball on the ground and actually creating the better chances. Seatoun did get a goal with an unlucky penalty but Army grafted through and came out with a winning result. No man of the match as this was truly a team effort. We have an amazing amount of Match reports, News and Fixtures to bring to you every fornight. Participation from every one involved so far has been great. Let's keep up that great effort :) If there is anything you would like to contribute or feature (Upcoming events, Important News) just let us know and we will happy to help. 16 TAWA SAINTS VS STOKES VALLEY 23 April Stokes Valley Destroyers - 7 vs Tawa Saints 4 With the guys well organised we rock up to Delaney Park at about 11.35am for the 12.30pm kickoff and are immediately facing a downpour of rain. The rain is short lived and just as well, as we then discover that Stokes Valley do not open up their changing rooms until 12pm and have no real protection or reprieve from the rain. A walkover of the ground does suggest more rain has hit Stokes Valley than most other regions in Wellington, with a good covering of grass on top of a firm and fairly even surface. A good solid ground, main issue is its exposure to the elements and that each time the ball leaves the field it either goes into a stream or travels some distance away from the field. The game gets off to a wobbly and slightly dysfunctional start for the Saints, with Stokes Valley strikers cruising around midfield and defence to put away two easy goals, and jump to a 2-0 lead early into the first half. Paul then needs to make three subs to shore things up, which almost immediately proves fruitful, with Ko going on a ghosting run through the middle of the park and hitting the upright. Waves of attacks follow from the Saints, and should have, on countless occasions, seen a goal but the shooting radar just is not on agh Daniel Annand. Eventually though, the Saints resilience and pressure amounts to a good finish by Michael Jansen and the score going into the break is 2-1 to Stokes Valley. The guys have a good chat at half time and are reminded they have the strong wind behind them in the second half and the wind is making it a real lottery that the Saints ought to capitalise on. The second half does start off well for the Tawa Saints, being dominant with possession but not being able to grab that elusive equaliser. One of Ko s mazy runs Positives to take from the game is that the guys did not give in against what was a physical and bigger Stokes Valley side does eventually lead to a goal and Tawa get back even at 2-2. This is then followed with a counter attack out of nowhere from Stokes Valley that sees them take a 3-2 lead. Ledan then shows his good finishing has not completely evaded him on the day, putting away a nice finish into the top of the net to square up the ledger once again. At this point, at 3-3, its game on. Unfortunately however, the strong wind then decides to start to swing around, giving little to no advantage to the Saints and then Stokes Valley get a boost seeing their attacks rewarded jumping up quickly to an unassailable 7-3 lead. The game does however, end well for the Tawa Saints, with Ledan scoring his second goal with the last kick of the game, after receiving the ball on the right and ripping a shot low to the left hand corner into the back of the net. A 7-4 loss for the Tawa Saints. Positives to take from the game is that the guys did not give in against what was a physical and bigger Stokes Valley side and this included Javlon who continued to win the challenges throughout the whole game and put his name up for a deserving Man of the Match. The back four battled throughout the whole game and did not deserve to concede 7 goals on the day. Another highlight is that Ledan continues to score goals for the Tawa Saints and has now racked up 6 goals in the first four games. With improved fitness levels, and if the guys continue to show the desire they showed against Stokes Valley, favourable results will return. Man of the Match: Javlon Goal Scorers: Ledan Eshay 2, Ko 1, Michael Jansen 1 Match report by Paul Leman 30 TAWA AFC TAWA AFC 31
