4 WELCOME MATCH REPORTS TAWA CAPITAL PREMIER VS MIRAMAR - 9TH APRIL "The final result at 3-1 was probably a fair reflection on the game" Miramar - 3 vs Tawa 1 game disaster struck as yet another too little too late, So cut inside from goal was conceded before the half the left to power in a curling shot Match day two saw Tawa take on hour mark to make it 3-0, not the on goal which was parried by their Miramar Rangers second XI at best thirty minutes of football ever keeper, Aaron was there to finish David Farrington Park on Saturday. seen. They drew to a close. were taking on a side that had lost So the final result at 3-1 was WELCOME the previous week to Capital Premier new boys North Wellington The second half saw a change in formation and with it the game probably a fair reflection on the game, Miramar were the deserving Welcome to Redwood Park today and the latest edition of our new newsletter produced by our New Club Captain Shannon Doyle with assistance supplied by Chris Munro and Jan Lang. We are targeting a wider distribution so more of our members will be kept up to date with what is happening. Today we host Waterside Karori who we know will be a force to be reckoned with, having had a very strong season last year. We started this year with a good win over a weak Olympic team but were brought back to earth with a poor performance against Miramar last week. The curtain raiser today is sure to be an epic struggle between our two Masters 5 teams Dad s Army and the Softballers, the latter team having an unbeaten record with two 1 all draws, the team scoring all the goals. Hopefully by now all the team knows which is its goal and which is the opponents. I would like to commend the Div 11 Saints team on winning its first two games of the season, equalling its win record of last season having a 7 6 victory during the week. I Would like to thank Paul Leman and Graham Street for the time they put in to getting this team off the ground this year. Unfortunately I will be unable to attend today s game having to attend a family function out of town but hope the game is a good one. Enjoy Mike Wood and would have been expecting to come away with a result in this fixture. However, Miramar started with a bang, after 5 minutes they were already a goal up as a direct ball caught out both centre half and keeper allowing for an easy finish to make it 1-0. Five minutes later Tawa were down 2-0 as a cross wasn t dealt with and the ensuing melee within the box resulted in an acrobatic finish from six yards into the bottom corner. As Tawa were struggling to get a foothold into the evened out, Miramar were unable to get the same amount of easy possession on the ball allowing Tawa to spring some promising attacks. The second half was fairly open with chances being created at both ends, Tawa always a final ball away from scoring that first goal required to start putting some pressure on Miramar but Miramar came close to extending their lead on a number of occasions. A goal did arrive for Tawa but it was winners and played most of the football especially in that first half and they look a decent prospect for the season, with the prospect of players dropping down from the first team when Team Wellington squad members come back into the fold. Tawa will be encouraged by their second half performance but have some work to do especially with a game against Capital Premier favourites Karori coming to Redwood this weekend. 5 MATCH REPORTS MATCH REPORTS TAWA BLUES VS PETONE "Ultimately we had to return to our possession based free flowing style of the first quarter. " One nil up after 10 minutes and hit the post twice by 15, it certainly looked like we were in for another convincing win like last week. Then it all changed! Petone had a penalty denied by our ref and they weren t happy. (I have to say I thought he dived but our players who were closer said it was a clear penalty) Like the proverbial bear with the sore head they were livid. Petone have always been a hard tackling team and the line between a foul and a good challenge is often somewhat blurred, but they were angry and it showed. For the next 30 minutes they wanted it and we were intimidated and completely lost the rhythm and flow that we had had in the first 15 minutes. By half time we were 3-1 down and had not created any good chance since the first 15 minutes. It was clear that subs had to be used and they were. Not that those coming off had played poorly but we needed to counteract some of their style of play and ultimately we had to return to our possession based free flowing style of the first quarter. As the coach said at half time we have to believe in ourselves and know that we are capable of playing good football and getting back into the game. And it worked. Serdar rocketed in our second goal after a goalmouth scramble. Defensively we were less under threat and this allowed us to play our style. At 3-2 belief was back and when Matt (a great find in the off season) made it 3-3 it was game on. Time was short and ultimately this prevented us from nicking the 3 points but the big positive is that last season we wouldn t have backed ourselves to comeback from 3-1 down, but now we do! TAWA CAP PREMIER VS OLYMPIC - 2ND APRIL "The floodgates opened after 55 minutes when Mike Ramaekers scored " Tawa - 6 v Olympic - 0 Having been relegated to Premier League last year and having lost some of its good young players the team was still confident of performing well with the return of Jason Bellman and Ricky Stevenson from overseas and the return to serious football of the two Shugg brothers. The confidence was well founded against a weak Olympic team when after 10 minutes Mo Hekmatsadah scored from a through ball by Aaron Magill who tormented the Olympic defence throughout. Mo repaid the favour after 30 minutes when he supplied Magill with an opportunity which he slotted easily. Shortly before half time a penalty was awarded to Olympic when a needless tackle from Bellman was punished by the referee. Lance Ramaekers made a diving save to his left to deny Olympic from opening its account. The floodgates opened after 55 minutes when Mike Ramaekers scored after winning the ball on the Olympic goal line and scoring from a narrow angle, then in the 70th minute a neat chip from Jake Shugg was headed in by Mike and he completed his hat trick in the 75th minute, with a solo effort when he curled the ball around the keeper. With time almost up, Mo delivered the ball to Andrew Tang who made a good run down the wing providing Jake Shugg with an excellent delivery allowing Jake to curl one in also. While this goal glut was taking place Lance in goal was total unemployed until the referee sympathetically offered the opposition another penalty. However, not being prepared to spoil the chance of a clean sheet, Lance once again, this time diving in the opposite direction, kept the ball out. A good start to the season but unlikely to have such an easy game again. Scorer: M Ramaekers 3, J Shugg, A Magill, M Hekmatsadah MOM: M Ramaekers Report by Richie Martin 08 TAWA AFC TAWA AFC 09

7 MATCH REPORTS MATCH REPORTS TAWA MENS 2NDS VS UPPER HUTT "The team worked hard with everyone contributing" 2nd April - Tawa 1 v Upper Hutt 1 We played Upper Hutt in our first game of the season which was a challenging start as they had just come down from the division above. Played at Maidstone Park in balmy 21 degrees the game was played at a fast pace throughout. The game was truly a game of two halves with Upper Hutt totally dominating the first half and Tawa coming back into the game and taking the honours in the second half. Having said this all of the scoring occurred in the first half. Upper Hutt pressed throughout the first half and was rewarded with a goal about half an hour in. Tawa then attacked and pressured the Upper Hutt keeper. Under pressure the keeper miskicked a clearance and Russell Kyne was on hand to tuck the ball away. After a team discussion at the break we started to play the game we wanted and came close on a number of occasions. As the second half progressed we put more pressure on the Upper Hutt back four and could have snatched all the points if the ball had sneaked inside the post rather than hitting it in the last couple of minutes. The team worked hard with everyone contributing with the key players on the day being Shaun Pankhurst his brother Brent and Geoff Romjin. Report by Stu Allan TAWA VETS VS MARIST SKIVS Marist Skivs (2) v Tawa Vets (0) It will be a short write up this week as we couldn t repeat last weeks 5 goal haul and ended up not even getting one. First half was not that entertaining as neither team could control the ball or string more than 2 passes together. They had a few chances but Marty kept us in it with some fine reaction saves tipping the ball over the top. Second half was much the same and Marist didn t allow us any time on the ball and our passes were not quite as accurate as the previous week. Less time create more errors. Ian did have a couple of chance at the beginning of the second half but with his $4 boots his shooting was not quite as accurate as it has been in the past.. Time for some new boots? From a corner Marist scored their first goal, partially cleared by Neil for the ball to land at Marists feet at the top of the box and his shot went through a few players into the back of the net. Their second goal came from a nice low shot to just sneak in past Marty at the close post. Report by Neil Gardner 12 TAWA AFC TAWA AFC 13

Saturday 9 April 2016 vs Stokes Valley at Redwood Park The venue was Redwood Park and the team was excited about playing at the club's home ground, which has been a rarity in recent years with Kura Street being the main home ground for the team. It was a slow start for the Tawa team, who gave away possession from the kick off and let Stokes Valley immediately into the game. After about 5 minutes though the Tawa team started to hit their stride and in particular looked very dangerous on the break. The Stokes Valley team was physically stronger than Tawa, but looked vulnerable at the back with a bit of lack of pace, with Richard Sims on the right hand side particularly exploiting the space that he was given. At half time centre back Bryce McPherson had to come off with a groin strain with Nathan Perkins taking to the field. This necessitated a bit of a reshuffle which unfortunately broke the cohesion that Tawa had built in the first half and Stokes Valley came strongly into the game. HT 0-1, FT 1-1 Our second match of the season saw us playing at Redwood Park for the first home game of the season. We were looking to continue our good work from last week and look to dominate an opposition who had managed a close win previously. Signs were promising when they admitted they had a bare 11 to play with, although there was some concern that the long grass would slow down the game and play into their hands. We went about our work with purpose, dominating possession and creating a lot of chances in front of goal, but it was IBU who went ahead after about 10 min, The second half continued in similar fashion to the first, although now IBU were visibly tired and sat a lot deeper. We dominated the play and the introduction of JJ on the left wing after 60 min only increased that. He immediately looked threatening with his added pace, and it was JJ that eventually found resort to off-the-ball tactics to slow him down. A poor challenge on JJ after he was played through saw a late penalty shout right on fulltime, which was turned down, and there were many who felt aggrieved. However, the reality is that we squandered myriad of chances to win the match before this, and if it wasn t for our poor finishing it could have ended TAWA AFC TAWA AFC 17

" The Tawa Bears took on the Naenae second team in their second game of the season. On a nice day out at Onepoto Park both teams started brightly with chances at both ends. The Bears had to make an early substitution on the 30 minute mark due to injury but the last 15 minutes of the half would be profitable for the team. Cam Riley got the ball rolling with a well taken one on one goal over the goal keeper to give us the lead. Before the half was out we would get a second with Mark (fat boy) Roberts scoring a tap in after good work through the mid field and his striking partner Mark Frew. 2-0 to the Bears at half time. The Bears continued where they left off in the second half. About 15 minutes into half Jeffrey Crosby pick the ball up on the left and headed goalwards to score the Bears third with a left footed shot through the goal keepers legs. Naenae were starting to run out of puff and we would add a fourth through Cam Riley, scoring his second of the match. Fitness was beginning to show but the match would end 4-0 to the Tawa Bears giving us our first win of the season and a clean sheet to boot. Special mention goes to Martin Chalk, his retirement didn't even last two games with him coming of the bench for the final ten minutes. Match Report by Jeffrey ACU 2 VS CINA "Moving into the closing stages of the game, ACU 2 were beginning to take control." Leapfrogging up five divisions from Capital 12 to Capital 7 was never going to be an easy task for ACU 2. Our inaugural match pitted us against Stokes Valley CINA, and at times it felt reminiscent of scenes from Mighty Ducks 2. You know, where the Ducks are feeling great till they meet their fierce new competitors - Team Iceland. The Scandinavian giants tower over the Ducks and intimidate with their sheer bulk and ice cold trash talk. However, cooler heads were prevailing at Petone Memorial Park on this Monday evening; and at half time we remained in a nil-all deadlock. Moving into the closing stages of the game, ACU 2 were beginning to take control. At the back, new keeper Matthew Jacobs was unimpeachable, up the front, striker Michael Love was marauding like a Mongol. Everyone in-between was looking sharp too, and an opening goal felt inevitable. Then with fifteen minutes to play, a heavy darkness descended on the pitch. Literally the floodlights had been extinguished. and with them, our hopes of winning. However, we will take our one point and march on to round two - another Monday nighter at Petone, where we'll meet VUW Scarfies. This time we are assured an earlier kick off with enough artificial lighting to last the full 90. Report by Geordie Shaw Thanks to ACU 2 for the great pictures :) 20 TAWA AFC TAWA AFC 21

Munners (or however you wish to spell it) Are you a savoury or sweet kinda guy? I ve always had a sweet tooth. we ve had limited opportunity to work together and develop as a group, so I was a little nervous heading into the first match. One of the points I highlighted in the pre-match talk was that all 11 players have a role on both attack and defence, and that our striker is our first line of defence. As a coach, it s heartening to see evidence of your instructions being heeded, and our 22 TAWA AFC opposition half. Croady added goals himself in the 6th and 8th minutes, as our front lines ran riot against a sleepy opposition. Eventually, IBU woke from their slumber and so it was somewhat against the run of play when Riley gave us a 4-0 lead in the 35th minute, on the back of a superb attacking move. This only prompted IBU to hit back with 2 quick goals of their own to head to the half time break at 4-2. An action-packed first out for a great 5-2 win. Nic Croad had a storming game in behind the lone striker, but it was newcomer Riley Crosbie who was Man of the Match, with 2 goals and 2 assists. A pleasing start to the season for the team and a number of points to work on at training. Report by Chris Munro What is the best part about playing with Tawa? It s a great bunch of people, not just the team but the whole club has a great atmosphere. Who was your favourite football player growing up? I didn't really get to see much football growing up. Possibly Ryan Giggs. If you were you an animal, what would you be? An ocelot, they re pretty awesome, look cool and have a sweet name. You know it s winter when? I get to sleep in on Saturday mornings. What s your pre game routine? Deep Heat, generous application of Deep Heat to my calves and hamstrings. Favourite Football team? The Phoenix (usually). Who is your favourite Tawa team mate and why? I don t think I could possibly comment, considering I m player/coach. What are your hobbies/interests? Watching movies, sports that aren t golf, video games. If you didn t play Football what sport would you play? I m not really sure. Not golf, I m terrible at it. Personal Goal for the Season? Score for a change. Don t get too many chances usually.

Although Barkles loss was significant, he was replaced for the remainder of the game by the versatile Liam Phipps. BNU remained 1-0 up as the halftime whistle blew. After going down by a goal and being forced into the early sub, AC were by no means out of this and it soon showed with their play. As every wave of attack was battered back by the defence, the play moved deeper and deeper into BNU territory. Nicholls orchestrating play in the centre of the park and Phipps distribution to both wings and the slide ball between the centre halves was proving effective. This created opportunities to use the pace of the strikers, with a number of changes being created and a certain goal stopped only by a desperately spread goalkeeper. Another memorable chance came from a beautifully weighted free kick from Raeburn that was meet by the head of Nicholls, who had beaten the keeper but was denied by the cross bar. In true AC United spirit the boys played to the final whistle, never giving up but unfortunately it wasn t to be with the final score remaining at 1-0. As the lads debriefed a tough loss, Coach Trimble chose to see the glass half full and praised each and every one for their performance, with a special mention to the centre half pairing with Gatkek picking up the Man of the Match. Next week we do it all over again, returning home to Onepoto Park at 2:30pm. Report by Leon Raeburn Tawa AC United 0-1 BNU Pilsner Round 2 of the season saw AC square off against BNU Pilsner at Wakefield Park. Last time the two teams meet here AC took out the title for Division 6 in Missing from the team sheet once again was season shot stopper Harry Slade, this week joined by right back dynamo Oscar Jay. For the second week running, AC2 goalkeeper Matt Jacobs was given the gloves, and after making a number of goal line saves in his last game, came in with increased confidence. Covering for Jay in the defensive line was Chris Pankhurst, who last season came up against AC United when playing for the former Tawa Devils. This first half got off to a fair start with both attacks testing the opposing defenses. The deadlock was broken inside the first 15 minutes as BNU pulled ahead after Jacobs, who confidently advanced off his line, lay claim to the ball as it enter his goal box only to miss kick it, sending the dribbling to the opposition midfield, who calmly took a touch and got off his shot over the keepers desperate attempt to get back to position. Not too soon after AC were on the 26 TAWA AFC

15 MATCH REPORTS MATCH REPORTS TAWA BLUES VS SV SNAKES "The hoof it mentality has been changed into one where possession is the key to scoring." 2 April 2016 SV Snakes 0 vs Tawa Blues 3 Those of you with long memories (or access to the internet) may remember that it took us 7 weeks before we recorded our first win last season. Not only that but we were on the wrong end of some high scoring thrashings (5-1, 6-1 etc) mixed in with a couple of draws. So it s a big relief to start the season with a 3-0 win and to sit second in the division. As to why the big difference? Well for me the answer lies in a planned programme of off season fixtures (thanks Stu) and a group of players believing in themselves and their abilities. When was the last time the Blues strung together 10 passes without the opposition being anywhere near the ball answer never! Yet this is what happened on Saturday. The hoof it mentality has been changed into one where possession is the key to scoring. Sure we missed a number of chances (there s a couple of names that could be mentioned) and were a bit lucky a few times in that the opposition, for all their huffing and puffing, never really had a decent shot on target, but the reality is we played great football and created chances. To single anyone out would be unfair since everyone played their part perfectly, but worthy of a mention are Phil (composed at the back), Dye (scored 2 and set up more) and obviously! Jeff who not only kept a clean sheet but also scored the third goal. So, since one win does not a season make, we approach our next game feeling confident but not cocky. TAWA BEARS VS IBU DREAMERS "The boys were keen to get the season started and find out if they could handle having Referees and not having rolling subs" 2 April 2016 Island Bay Dreamers 1 vs Tawa Bears 1 The Tawa Bears had their first game of the season against their bogey team being Island Bay United Dreamers. Having been promoted to capital 5 (much to their horror) the boys were keen to get the season started and find out if they could handle having Referees and not having rolling subs. Both teams started strongly with Island Bay content to knock the ball around and the Bears looking to move the ball quickly and strike on the counter attack. After a couple of early attacks and having had a ball cleared of the line, the Bears found themselves behind. A mix up at the back meant a short pass didn't find its intended target, allowing the island bay striker to pick up the ball and score one on one. Half time and 1-0 to Island Bay. The Bears brought on some fresh legs and the game continued in a similar fashion in the second half. This time however it was the Bears that would clear two opportunities off there line and ride our luck at time. Island Bay however did not punish us and with 5 minutes to go Cam Riley struck with a headed goal from a nice ball from the left. That's the way it would finish, 1-1 a fair result on the balance of the game and a good way for the Bears to start life in Capital TAWA AFC TAWA AFC 29

17 MATCH REPORTS MATCH REPORTS TAWA WOMENS 1 VS KCU 10 April 2016 Tawa 5 vs Kapiti Coast Reserves 0 Compare Donald Trumps toupée after it has been trampled by a pack of stampeding Antelopes pursued by a Lion to the Italian-American male fashion model Fabio's luscious locks blowing in the breeze. These two things are quite the opposite. And so was the Tawa Women's performance on the field today compared to the walloping we received last week. It was quite a different Tawa team who took to the field today to play a taller, stronger looking Kapiti team who we had been pre-warned would be strong on the ball. We immediately had the psychological advantage when we forced the Kapiti keeper to change her clashing red top and wear our spare one which can only be described as the most hideous multi-coloured clown like keeper top of all time. They were doomed from the start. We applied a lot of early pressure with Jan and We applied a lot of early pressure with Jan and Erin combining well up front with a few early chances and our defence holding their line well Erin combining well up front with a few early chances and our defence holding their line well. The mid-field were on song with some crisp passing through the middle and shutting down any possible Kapiti advances through the centre. The Kapiti keeper was forced to make a number of excellent saves and put under pressure from some great corner kicks. She eventually cracked not long before half time when an Special mention must be made to Ben for refereeing and having to put up with a few lippy excellent ball starting from Leanne T in the mid-field. She sent it wide to Imogen on the right who crossed the ball back through to Jan who laid the perfect ball back for Erin to score. Boom! The girls continued to put the pressure on in the second half with the majority of the game being played in the oppositions half. Kapiti became as solid as a soup sandwich (not very) as Alex scored a blinder off her left foot after a strong run from the middle and Minnie put us up by 3 with a first time strike ending up in the top left hand corner after a cross form Leanne T. The nail was put in the coffin when Leanne T beat the keeper on the deck and Eddy scored off a powerful strike on her left putting us 5-0 up. There were a number of standout performances with Minnie and Lizzy both being really solid on the ball and Rosemary stepping into centre back for her first game and combining well with Kirsten and Leanne S in the back line. Special mention must be made to Ben for refereeing and having to put up with a few lippy ladies and Tim Cockle trying to make subs without telling him. And to all the loyal supporters who came to watch a really fantastic performance, we are so glad we could turn it around and come away with a really convincing win that gives us plenty of encouragement for the season ahead.
