Corpus Christi Hooks (1-1) at Tulsa Drillers (1-1) Saturday, April 5, 2014 ONEOK Field Tulsa, OK 7:05 p.m. ON THE RECORD: 0-0 Home 1-1 Road 0-0-0 Series 0-0 Sweeps W 1 Streak 1-1 Last 5 1-1 Last 10 NIP & TUCK: Corpus Christi reached the win column last night with a thrilling 2-1 victory over the Drillers. Locked in a scoreless tie, the Hooks took advantage of a two-base error by Tim Smalling in left field to open the ninth. Following a sac bunt, Tulsa reliever Bruce Kern let go of a wild pitch and Preston Tucker scampered home to put Corpus Christi on the board. Later in the frame, Jio Mier smoked a two-out RBI double over the head of center fielder Delta Cleary, Jr., to give the Hooks a much-needed insurance run. Alex Sogard entered for the save and coaxed the first two outs quickly. Back-to-back doubles by Harold Riggins and Smalling placed the tying tally in scoring position. Sogard responded by freezing Jayson Langfels on a called third strike to end the game. David Rollins was exceptional on the mound. The Dallas lefty held the Drillers to three hits and two walks over four innings. Rollins struck out six and stranded four runners in scoring position. Aaron West took over in the fifth and picked up where Rollins left off. West, making his Double-A debut, permitted a pair of base runners (1B & BB) thru the next four frames. He fanned two and retired the last seven men he faced in order. PAGE 2 STEADY SEATON: A familiar face is slated to follow Luis Cruz on the mound tonight, Ross Seaton. The veteran right-hander is Corpus Christi s career leader in starts (62) and has not missed a turn in the rotation since July of 2009 with Lexington - a span of 101 starts. Seaton combined to go 6-8 with a 6.20 ERA in 25 appearances (23 starts) for Oklahoma City and Corpus Christi last season. For the Hooks, his record was 3-1 with a 4.77 ERA in 10 appearances and nine starts. Seaton received the Opening Day nod for Corpus Christi and tossed five innings of two-run ball in a 3-2 win over Springfield. His ERA was 2.80 at Whataburger Field but rose to 8.38 on the road. Seaton closed out the year in Oklahoma City - his second stint with the RedHawks. The Houston native tossed eight innings of one-run ball against Memphis in his final appearance of the season. Seaton was a non-roster invitee to big league camp in 2012 and spent most of the season at Corpus Christi, sans for four starts at Oklahoma City. He was 8-8 with a 4.07 ERA in 25 starts for the Hooks, including one complete game. Seaton struck out 106 and walked 31 in 146.0 innings. A Mid Season Texas League All-Star, Seaton finished fourth in the loop in innings pitched and tied for fifth in starts. From June 15 to July 12, he authored five quality starts in six outings. Tossed seven shutout innings vs. San Antonio on August 27 and struck out a career-high nine batters. Also provided the game-winning hit, a two-run triple in the fourth. Won two of his final four starts, including Game 3 of the TLDS, posting a 1.82 ERA with 25 strikeouts against three walks in 24.2 innings. Seaton is the only pitcher in Hooks history to hit a home run. In 2011, he took Cory Riordan deep with two on and two away in the fourth inning of an April 15 contest at Whataburger Field. TULSA TIME: This tight, back-and-forth series mirrors the meetings of these two clubs last year. The Hooks and Drillers split their 12 matchups and each won three and lost three in their respective parks in 2013. Tulsa leads the lifetime series 65-49, including a 37-20 mark here in Oklahoma. Corpus Christi is now 10-15 over four seasons at ONEOK Field. IT S A ROTATION: For the second straight year, Corpus Christi will employ a tandem pitching rotation to open the season. The first starter is expected to go five innings or 75 pitches and the second starter would follow with four innings or 60 pitches. The two would then swap the next time thru. Relievers are used to bridge gaps or close out games. Here are the Hooks tandems as they stand now: Brady Rodgers - Colton Cain (L), David Rollins (L) - Aaron West, Luis Cruz (L) - Ross Seaton & Matt Heidenreich - Tommy Shirley (L). FIELD CHIEF: Manager Keith Bodie returns for his third season at the helm. In 17 campaigns as a manager from the shortseason Class A level through Triple-A, Bodie s teams have compiled a regular-season record of 1,150-1,041 for an overall winning percentage of.525. Ten of his clubs have qualified for post-season play. In six seasons as a Texas League manager, Bodie s clubs have won six second-half championships. His TL charges stand 470-363 for a.564 winning percentage, fourth all -time among circuit skippers with at least 500 games managed. STAFF NOTES: Pitching coach Gary Ruby, hitting coach Tim Garland, athletic trainer Bryan Baca and strength coach Trey Wiedman are all back on Corpus Christi s field staff. Ruby, the 2013 Mike Coolbaugh Texas League Coach of the Year, is currently on medical leave. Doug Brocail, who serves as a special assistant to Astros GM Jeff Luhnow and senior pitching advisor, will take Ruby s place on an interim basis. Brocail was Houston s pitching coach from mid June 2011 to the end of the 2013 season. The right-hander compiled a 52-48 record with a 4.00 ERA and nine saves in 626 appearances (42 starts) as part of 16 major league seasons from 1992 to 2009. Brocail pitched for the Padres, Astros, Tigers and Rangers. Tom Lawless, who managed the Hooks in 2011, was originally assigned to Corpus Christi as a development specialist. Instead, he will begin the season as interim manager at Triple-A Oklahoma City. To fill the void, the Astros called on Mark Bailey, who tutored Corpus Christi s catchers last year. Bailey will work with the club when at home and tour Houston s other affiliates when the Hooks go on the road. TOP SYSTEM: Over the past two seasons, the combined record of the Astros minor league system has been the best in baseball (915-754,.548). Houston set a franchise record when their top six minor league affiliates all qualified for the playoffs in 2013, and two clubs ended up winning championships (Class A Quad Cities, Class A Short Season Tri-City). The Astros became the first organization to have six domestic affiliates qualify for the postseason since the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2003. This spring, the Astros minor league system was rated as the best in baseball by both ESPN.com and The Sporting News. Baseball America, who ranked the Houston system as the worst in baseball in both 2009 and 2010, tabbed the Astros farm as the fifth-best in the Majors
