Tulsa Drillers (3-5) at Corpus Christi Hooks (6-2) Saturday, April 12, 2014 Whataburger Field Corpus Christi, TX 7:10 p.m. ON THE RECORD: 1-1 Home 5-1 Road 2-0-0 Series 1-0 Sweeps L 1 Streak 4-1 Last 5 6-2 Last 10 DAYS LIKE THESE: Another feel-good night at the ballpark turned ugly Friday as the Hooks squandered a seven-run lead in a 10-9 loss to the Drillers at Whataburger Field. The result snaps Corpus Christi s win streak at six. The home team jumped on Jon Gray, the Rockies top prospect, for six runs in the first. The first six men reached in the inning with most of the damage inflicted by Matt Duffy and Enrique Hernandez. With the bases loaded, Duffy placed a double down the left-field line to give the Hooks a 3-0 lead. Later in the frame, Hernandez, cracked a two-run home run to left field - the first bomb at Whataburger Field this season. Corpus Christi tacked on a pair in the third off reliever Ryan Arrowood. M.P. Cokinos and Leo Heras reached with two-out singles. Tyler Heineman followed with a two-run double to the gap in right-center field. Hooks starter Matt Heidenreich struggled to hold the lead as the Drillers engineered a six-run fourth inning, cutting Corpus Christi s advantage to one at 8-7. Dustin Garneau capped the onslaught with a two-run double into the left-field corner off Andrew Robinson. Garneau pushed Tulsa ahead 9-8 with a two-run single in the sixth. After a key double play, Tommy Shirley surrendered a book-rule double into the Kleberg Bank Power Alley to Harold Riggins, providing the Drillers with what proved to be the winning run. PAGE 2 RAISIN CAIN: Colton Cain is slated to follow Brady Rodgers on the mound this evening. Cain was touched for 4 runs on 10 hits over 3.2 innings Monday in Springfield. Two of those runs came on a blast to right off the bat of Rafael Ortega. He walked 1 and struck out 3. Cain entered in relief of Rodgers on Opening Night in Tulsa. He tossed 3 innings of 1-run ball, did not walk a batter and struck out four. The damage occurred on a home run by Dustin Garneau. The 6-3, 235-pound left-hander went 8-5 with a 3.88 ERA in 28 appearances (19 starts) between Quad Cities and Lancaster last season. A native of Waxahachie, TX, Cain struck out 88, walked 39 and yielded five home runs over 120.2 innings. He opened the campaign in the Midwest League and struggled in his first six appearances. The 23-year-old settled in from there, posting a 5-2 record and a 2.94 ERA over his final 17 outings (11 GS) with the River Bandits. Cain, acquired, along with LHP Rudy Owens and OF Robbie Grossman, in the Wandy Rodriguez trade with Pittsburgh on July 24, 2012, held the opposition to a.177 batting average thru six June games. He was promoted to the California League on August 4 and went 3-0 with a 3.24 ERA in five starts en route to JetHawks Player of the Month honors. Cain permitted one earned run and completed seven innings in each of his last two regular season starts, striking out 12 against one walk. Cain divided 2012 between Lancaster and the Pirates Florida State League affiliate in Bradenton. He featured a combined 5-7 record and a 4.64 ERA in 23 starts, surrendering 14 home runs. Opponents batted at a.242 clip against him in the FSL, but 15 percent of those hits left the yard (10 HR 68 H). Following the trade, Cain held California League lefties to a.217 batting average. In 2011, he carved out a 6-8 record and a 3.64 ERA in 24 appearances (19 GS) for West Virginia of the South Atlantic League. Cain missed the first half of 2010, recovering from back surgery. He was selected by Pittsburgh in the 8th round of the 2009 draft. Cain declined his commitment to the University of Texas after receiving an above-slot bonus of $1.125 million. AND COUNTING: The Hooks welcomed their 4th-million fan through the Whataburger Field turnstiles last night. Corpus Christi opened the season with a regular-season attendance figure of 3,989,974 for its 9-year tenure. After two strong nights at the box office, that number has swelled to 4,002,787. The Hooks have finished between 2nd and 6th in overall attendance among the 30 Double-A clubs in all nine years of the team s existence. Corpus Christi has finished between 14th and 30th in overall attendance among the 120 full-season clubs in the minors (AAA, AA and the five full-season Class A leagues) in the club s 9-year history. ROLL ON: Corpus Christi s offense, which is averaging 6 runs per game, has benefited from a big boost by Matt Dufy and Enrique Hernandez.
