Corpus Christi Hooks (26-23) at NW Arkansas Naturals (17-31) Monday, May 26, 2014 Arvest Ballpark Springdale, AR 1:05 p.m. ON THE RECORD: 13-9 Home 13-14 Road 7-4-2 Series 1-1 Sweeps L 1 Streak 3-2 Last 5 6-4 Last 10 LONG (BALL) NIGHT: Northwest Arkansas belted three home runs and its six-run head start held in a 7-4 victory over the Hooks at Arvest Ballpark. Luis Cruz got the start for Corpus Christi and was battered to the tune of nine hits in 5.0 innings. Six of those Naturals knocks went for extra bases. Cheslor Cuthbert began the barrage with a lead-off shot in the third. Juan Graterol s two-run blast capped a four-run second and Micah Gibbs made it 6-0 with a solo poke in the fourth. For both Graterol and Gibbs, it was their first long balls of the season. The Naturals added what proved to be a key insurance run in the seventh. Justin Trapp worked a one-out walk and went to third on a an errant pick-off throw from Alex Sogard. Orlando Calixte s sac fly to right brought him home. J.C. Sulbaran allowed four base runners thru the first five innings. Corpus Christi finally broke through in the sixth thanks to a two-run home run by Matt Duffy and a two-out RBI single off the bat of Jio Mier. With two on, Telvin Nash laced a line drive into right field but Ethan Chapman raced to his left and made a sensational diving catch to save two runs and end the frame. In the eighth, singles by Duffy and Joe Sclafani ended Matt Murray s night, forcing Malcom Culver into the game. A hit batter and a bases-loaded walk by Mier made it 7-4 NWA. Nash and Delino DeShields, Jr., were retired on consecutive pitches to leave them loaded. LONG STORY: Its been tough sledding for Hooks pitchers over the last 11 games. Since May 13, Corpus Christi has surrendered 21 home runs - the most in the minors. During this time the opposition has scored 67 percent (38 of 57) of its runs via the long ball. Hooks hitters have backed the hurlers step for step though, averaging 5 runs per game (57) for a 7-4 record. The Travelers and Naturals, who occupy the bottom two power rungs in the Texas League, have hit 8 home runs on this 5- game road trip. Corpus Christi trails only Springfield for homers allowed, surrendering 50 in 49 games. DAPPER DUFFY: Matt Duffy s 2-run home run in the sixth last night extended his hit streak to 6 games.
