George Springer clubbed 2 home runs, scored 3 times and drove in 3. Ben Orloff extended his hit streak to 7 games and notched a pair of sac flies, including the game-winner in the 10th. Over his final 3 plate appearances, Michael Burgess walked twice, scored twice and produced a perfect bunt down the 3rd-base line. Erik Castro, who s now hit safely in 5 consecutive games, went 2-for-3 with 2 sac bunts. Jonathan Meyer added a sac fly in the 4th, plating CC s first run. Former Hook Jake Goebbert, 3-for-5 with 2 doubles and 2 RBIs, cut CC s lead to 1 in the 8th with a solo homer to right. Jason Stoffel entered and record 2 outs to end the frame with runners at 2nd & 3rd. Stoffel yielded 2 unearned runs in the 9th to lose his 2nd straight save. PAGE 2 HOOKS MEDIA INFORMATION WEDNESDAY, APRIL 24, 2013 MIDLAND SECOND STARTER: RHP David Martinez was perfect Saturday night, retiring all 15 RoughRiders he faced. Martinez, who allowed just 3 baseballs to leave the infield, fanned 3 batters and threw 36 of 60 pitches for strikes. He worked just 1.2 IP of relief April 15 in Tulsa, surrendering a Henry Wrigley HR to lead off the 7th. Martinez tossed 5 shutout innings in his other start of the season, April 11 at Springfield. Of the 8 hits Martinez has allowed, 3 have left the yard. He currently ranks 9th in Texas League with a 1.88 ERA. Signed by the Astros as a non-drafted free agent in March 2005, Martinez went 9-5 with a 4.38 ERA in 27 appearances (26 starts) for the California League Champion Lancaster JetHawks last season. He led the club in starts, innings, strikeouts, ERA, BAA (.285) and WHIP (1.33). His win total tied for first on the club while his innings ranked third in CL. Posted a 7-2 record and 3.08 ERA in 13 second-half starts. The right-hander out of Venezuela walked 14 and struck out 63 over 87.2 innings and fashioned a 1.25 WHIP. Martinez was the league s pitcher of the week June 11-18 after carving out seven innings of two-hit shutout ball against Inland Empire. He stood 7-2 with a 3.08 ERA away from Lancaster s hitter-friendly park. Martinez won both of his post-season starts, limiting the opposition to five runs on 13 hits and two walks in 12.0 innings for a 3.75 ERA. Martinez worked mostly out of the bullpen for Lexington in 2011, going 5-7 with a 4.19 ERA. In 2010, he helped lead Tri-City to the New York-Penn League Championship. Martinez fashioned a 5-2 record and 3.02 ERA in 17 outings (10 starts), striking out 57 against 11 walks over 65.2 innings. The 25-year-old owns a 3.13 strikeout-to-walk ratio over an eight-year career. ZEROS FOR WOJO: With 4 shutout innings Saturday night, Asher Wojciechowski extended his scoreless innings streak to start the season to 18. Their reigning Texas League Pitcher of the Week has not allowed a run since the 4th inning August 20, 2012 at Springfield, a span that covers seven appearances and 31.0 innings. Here s a look at the streak: DATE OPPONENT W-L-S INNINGS R H SO BB 8/20/12 @Springfield ND 6.2 1 5 1 0 8/26/12 vs. San Antonio W 6.0 0 2 4 2 9/2/12 @ San Antonio ND 5.0 0 1 6 0 4/6/13 vs. Springfield W 5.0 0 1 7 1 4/11/13 @ Springfield S 4.0 0 1 4 3 4/15/13 @ Tulsa ND 5.0 0 4 3 0 4/20/13 vs. Frisco W 4.0 0 2 5 0 It is the longest streak in Corpus Christi Hooks history, surpassing the 26.0 consecutive scoreless frames that Chance Douglass posted from May 18-June 5, 2007. The Texas League record is 42 by Tom Gorman of Beaumont in 1952. The New York native, who logged 8 seasons in the big leagues with the Yankees and Kansas City Athletics, accomplished the feat in single week (July 13-20). Orel Hershiser holds the Major League mark, hurling 59 consecutive shutout innings from August 30 to September 28, 1988. BATS HEAT UP: The Hooks, who have been struggling at the plate of late, woke up last night, scoring a season-high seven runs. Their 10 hits are the most since the club notched 13 April 9 against Tulsa at Whataburger Field. Corpus Christi coaxed 5 walks and executed 5 sacrifices. George Springer became the first Hook this season to notch a multi-homer game and eclipse the 2-RBI mark. The club sports just 4 extra-base hits over the last 4 games - and Springer is the lone culprit (2B Sunday HR Saturday 2 HR yesterday). Corpus Christi averaged 2.2 runs in the 10 games which led up to last night. FRIENDLY FIRE: Former Hook Jake Goebbert is mashing the baseball against his old teammates. In 6 at-bats vs. Corpus Christi, he has 3 doubles, a home run and 2 RBIs. With 1 on and 1 away in the 3rd last night, Goebbert crushed a 3-0 pitch from Nick Tropeano to right field. That laser-shot was bound for the Midland bullpen until Drew Muren made a leaping catch to save a home run. Goebbert, a Corpus Christi fan favorite who was traded to Oakland earlier this month for lefty reliever Travis Blackley, is hitting.309 with 9 runs scored, 6 doubles, 3 home runs, 9 RBIs and 2 steals in 15 games for the Hounds. The 13th-round pick in 2009 out of Northwestern hit a combined.291 with nine home runs and 54 RBIs in 130 games with Oklahoma City and Corpus Christi last season. Goebbert ranked among Texas League leaders in batting average (.304, 4th) and on-base percentage (.399, 4th). He was named TL Co-Player of the Week for April 5-16 (with Brandon Barnes), hitting.375 (12-for-32) with 2 home runs and 10 RBIs. Goebbert reached base safely in 22 straight road games from May 3-July 17, hitting.297 (22-for-74) with a.436 OBP. The 25-year-old out of Hampshire, IL, hit.305 with 103 runs, 41 doubles, 10 triples, 14 home runs and 87 RBIs over 2 seasons (189 G) with the Hooks. LEATHER LAPSE: The Hooks hand an uncharacteristically rough night in the field Tuesday. Corpus Christi, which tied its season-high with four errors, owns the third-best fielding percentage (.977) in the league. The Hooks have committed 17 errors in a circuit-high 718 total chances. Corpus Christi and Frisco have both turned a league-leading 19 double plays. Meanwhile the RockHounds, who committed 4 errors as well last night, own the worst fielding percentage in the TL at.961. 3B Jefry Marte, who had 3 miscues Tuesday, is tied with Springfield SS Jake Lemmerman for most errors in the circuit at 6.
