We will meet in the banquet room at Sayler s Old Country Kitchen, located at SE Stark Street in Portland. After a year of great events, it s time to celebrate and recognize our members who have reached a Five Year Milestone with MBCA. We will present 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and event 30-year membership pins to those in attendance. We will also elect new members to the Portland Section Board of Directors as we have two Board positions Next Event: Mt. 2 President s Message I just returned from the Oregon Festival of Cars in Bend, which moved to a new location at the Les Schwab Amphitheater in the Old Mill District. After attending the show, I can say that this event is emerging as one of Oregon s signature automotive gatherings. Set along the Deschutes River, about 100 automobiles were arranged on the gently sloping lawn. What makes this event special is the laid back atmosphere, fun people, and wonderful selection of cars. The Dan Balmer Trio plays live Jazz. Collector car uber-expert Keith Martin is emcee. And the car owners are approachable and eager to tell you about their automobile. (Photo by Allen Stephens) Portland Section members were well represented Barry Corno displayed his SEC and Gary Dempsey displayed his 2005 CLK 55 AMG (one of five that exist in white with a black interior). Kevin Blount brought his 300SL Gullwing. Portland Section board member Jerry Sorenson displayed his immaculate CLK 63 AMG, and he helped me staff our MBCA tent on the show field. There were many other fine cars including Ferraris, Maseratis, Lamborghinis, Porsches even a McLaren F1. At the Saturday evening banquet, event chairman John Draneas asked Barry Corno to present an award for the first car to register for this event. (Photo by Allen Stephens) Next year the Festival of Cars will honor the automobiles of Steve McQueen (with a couple of real Mc- Queen cars scheduled to attend), and celebrate 50 Years of the Porsche 911. We hope to have an even stronger Mercedes-Benz presence, so make plans for this event in September 2013! 4 Mt. Adams Tour October 13 The Portland section s fall drive in the country is coming up shortly. Two of our intrepid club members test-drove the route on Sunday, September 23 to make sure the route is still open and the county hasn t rolled up the roads and put them away for the winter. The roads are still there, just waiting for the wheels of our Mercedes-Benz s to roll. Our route circles around Klickitat County, Washington, on the south side of Mt. Adams We will meet at the Starbucks Coffee next to the Hood River Bridge in Hood River, Oregon (exit 64 on I-84). The Starbucks is in a small shopping area on the north side of I-84, behind a Shell station. We will leave the Starbucks parking lot at 11:00am, cross the Hood River Bridge, and drive east through Bingen, WA to start our trip. A few minutes before 11:00am there will be a drivers meeting to go over the route; plan to get to the Starbucks by 10:45am. The loop takes 2½ hours to drive. 5 Sandpaper in a bottle Detail Clinic Recap Our Detail Clinic on September 8th was a popular event, with 27 Portland Section members attending at Sidedraught City, a new local business offering Griot s car care and racing supplies. Owner Neil d Autremont welcomed our club and offered everyone in attendance 10% off his stock of Griot s Garage items. Board Meeting November 17 Your Portland Section Board will meet Saturday, November 17th, at Mercedes-Benz of Portland, 1605 SW Naito Parkway. The meeting starts at 10:00 AM. As usual, all members of the club are invited to attend. The meetings are typically informal, and there s plenty of opportunity to hear from club members, whether or not they are members of the board. Do you have an idea for an event? Have a suggestion for the club? Want to know more? The board meeting is the place. The dealership will park your car for you. Just pull into the service area. Greeters will be ready. (Photo by Allen Stephens) Expert detailer David Reich showed the best practice for prepping your car for a detail getting it clean. He used Griot s Spray-on Car Wash, and demonstrated the technique for using a clay bar to remove dirt from your finish. Using the black hood of a W202 C-Class owned by Stacy Rollins, we then learned how to polish a car using a random orbital polisher. David cautioned our group that polish is sandpaper in a bottle and invited our group to give it try. Several people took turns with the polisher getting used to applying the right pressure. Fortunately Stacy s cars finish is still intact, and everyone felt more confident after the clinic. Club member Wayne Brock won the raffle for the $100 gift certificate for Griot s Garage products, and several club members took the opportunity to stock up on car care items. We thank Neil d Autremont and David Reich for sharing their vast knowledge with us.
