Kevan's Corner By Kevan Jurin Hello everyone, I know ESCA is a car club but I also know a few of you out there enjoy traveling on a motorcycle occasionally. I recently took the motorcycle safety course (you see them riding in circles at the fairgrounds) and it was pretty eye opening. For anyone wanting to get into riding I would highly recommend it and you also save on your bike insurance. Anyway the class went well and I have my license and started motoring around town and have been enjoying myself quite a bit, well aside from some of the roads that will almost loosen your teeth if your suspension is a bit stiff. I did get an interesting statistic from the class though and I am sure moms around the club would nod their heads in unison and say See, I told you so. Riding a bike is 38 times more dangerous than driving a car, now I know I have seen some stupid riders out there endangering themselves but I just wanted to put out there to please keep an eye out for us. I wear bright clothes, my bike is not super loud but it is not quiet either and the amount of information I take in while riding has opened my eyes quite a bit. Texting drivers scare me like nothing else, freeway speed with a driver in an F250 creeping into you, quickly swerving back into their lane with a sheepish wave with the phone still in hand makes for a tense rest of the ride. For those of you who check your mirrors, who give a bit more space when you see us coming, it is appreciated. When I am at an auto-x or in the meetings I look at you all and am pleased to see responsible drivers who take driving like the privilege it is and not as though you are entitled to it. Thank you for being safe out there and from a rider as well, thanks for the space in that stop and go traffic. 3 53 rd Annual April Fools Rallye By Bob the Beard All the rain made for a late start for working on this rallye, but once there were a few non rainy days things went together pretty quickly. Did lose a sign, but then they put it back up a week later. Changed the first four route instructions after the first pre-run, something I had never done before, and on the video run the week before the rallye, I lost the last sign on the start traverse. But that is the life of a rallymaster, and from then on there were no problems and the day of the rallye the weather was clear and warm. Marci Jenkins and Claudia Quinlivan opened registration to a small crowd and Linda Jurin handled the poker hands. At eleven Blain Hendrix and John Perlis started the school with a very interactive crowd, and shortly after the school was over Blain started sending out cars with John Perlis collecting out times and Karen Perlis getting signatures on the release form. The last of the 35 cars turn out left start at just about one and everyone headed for their next job. The first checkpoint was in front of Frank & Linda Jurin s home, where they and John Schliemann and Susan Hee welcomed each rallye car, asked them a question, let them draw a poker card, and checked to be sure they had their headlights on as the instructions stated the first 6 instructions were to be in the dark of night. They soon had all cars through the checkpoint except for one and I ran the route back to start looking for the missing car. I did not find the car, but called them the next day and learned they were having trouble and decided to head for a day at the coast. At the finish checkpoint in the parking lot behind the Marlow Shopping Center, Terry Larson, John Perlis, and Blain Hendrix, greeted the rallyist to the finish, with another Page 3 (Continued on page 4)

53 rd Annual April Fools Rallye (Continued from page 3) question, the last poker hand card, gave them a critique, and invited them to go inside the pizza parlor to see the video critique and wait for their score to be posted. Inside finish Marci Jenkins, Claudia Quinlivan, Karen Larson, Karen Perlis, Susan Hee, John Schliemann, and ex-member Dennis Sturdevant, handled the scoring and checking, posting, and collecting of score sheets from the checkpoint. Soon after the last car finished we stated handing out the awards, with Claudia as trophy lady and the Beard calling out the winners. ESCA Members did well with Austin & Katrina Hendrix taking third in Master Expert, Mark Burchill & Mel Konrad taking second in Expert, Joe & Claudette Masters taking first in Senior, Gary O Connor and Keeyon Williams taking first in Novice, and Sam Brabo & Lisa in fifth in First Timer. First Overall with a perfect score were Judy & Andy Stocker, to get their name on the big trophy for the second time. Once Page 4 (Continued on page 5)

53 rd Annual April Fools Rallye (Continued from page 4) again the rallyist came from all over the bay area, and from the Barstow area, Oregon, and Nevada, strange how some people spend their vacations. They came in a collection of great cars including, Jaguar XK140, XKE, F-Type, Mustangs, BMW Z3 s, Mini s new and old, a Tesla X, Factory 5 Cobra, Dodge Hellcat, Audi TT, Karman Ghia, 350Z, Miata, Porsche RS- 60, and Gary O s Ford Woodie. A special thanks to all the workers who not only worked the day of the rallye but did pre-runs to catch any mistakes, and made the event fun for all. At the ESCA meeting Karen Perlis had her name drawn as the winner of the free dinner at the Christmas Party. On the Wednesday after the rallye we gave Canine Companions three checks totaling $650. 6 Course Designed by Canaan Mckoy So I ve been doing Auto-x and track days for three years now. I don t see that ending anytime soon especially since I got to design a course for ESCA. That s pretty cool. When I would go down to Monterrey Airport to watch the Nor-Cal UFO people I never thought that I would be participating in the sport as much as I am today. When Donnie asked me to design a course I was very excited and said yes. I had no idea what I got into. Anyway I ll explain how I did it so hopefully it will be easier for you. The first thing I did was get a blank copy of the ESCA map. I took a png file and opened it in notepad for the PC and erased everything from that course. I spent some time with a few print outs trying to make technical courses. After realizing that I m not that good at being technical. So I thought What am I good at?" I decided it would be better if I created a course that had flow, so here is what I did next. I printed out yet another and took my pencil and in one motion created a course from start to finish. After having one complete line I did my best to make cones and separate the course. I had Donnie make sense of my mess as well as making it safe for everyone and there you have it. April 2017 course was born. One more thing sometimes reading a course is very different than walking a course. I highly recommend doing both before you take your runs. Page 6

A Navigator Is Born By Gary O'Connor Terry and I started running road rallies 30+ years ago, competing in events in the South Bay, the Sports Car Olympics and of course our local favorite, the April Fool s Rallye. We ran it many times with midpack success but as time went on we eventually figured out that if we wanted to stay married it would be better to work the event than run it. Two years ago I became a Big Brother (Big Brothers/Big Sisters) to 11 year old Keeyon and we re always looking for things to do and I thought he might enjoy the challenge of the April Fools Rallye, my first one in probably 15 years. Keeyon wanted to take the Woodie on the rallye (we had been at the Maria Carrillo High car show the day before) so we loaded up the pens, markers, and post its and headed for the start. We attended Blain s rallye school and I could see that Keeyon was starting to understand what this was about. We went back to the car and dissected the route instructions, reading the story about Nancy and discussing how you can t turn onto a sign. We were ready to go. When we drive around Keeyon loves to give directions so he fell right into the role of navigator. It only took three or four route instructions before the light went on and he was making decisions on whether A or B was right. He s a bright kid and I knew he would eventually understand the concept but I thought eventually would be longer than 10 minutes. Many times we stopped at an intersection and talked about whether the sign was good, if it was a junction or a stop and what side the sign was on when we passed. I was amazed at how quickly he became a real navigator! At the checkpoints he was quick to say April Fools (he thought I was pulling his leg at first) and was able to answer one of the questions for more points. The route went along roads that I hadn t traveled, through beautiful vineyards and neighborhoods with light traffic. I thought the gimmicks were just as aggravating as they have Page 8 been in the past requiring several turn arounds, meeting cars that were behind us only to meet them again as they went back to look for signs or clues. I even got to wave Hello to my flathead engine being refreshed at Vern Tardel s shop on Pleasant near Windsor. The final traverse brought us to Round Table and after handing in our score sheet Keeyon said he felt good about our answers and hoped we would do well. I mentioned that I ALWAYS felt good about my answers but it didn t always work out that well. Of course, no event is complete to an 11 year old without eating and Keeyon was anxious to see where we ended up in our class while I ordered pizza. We re in first place! he told me excitedly and I opted not to crush his little spirit by telling him it was early in the day... lots of better scores to come in yet. But as the afternoon went on we remained in first (Keeyon checked every few minutes) and when all was said and done we had indeed won Novice class!!!! The day was a big success for me, not so much for a win but to see Keeyon as a critical thinker and opening his eyes to rallying. We had a great time and he s ready for another one when the opportunity comes along. Thanks Bob and Marci and all the rest of the ESCA crew that puts on this epic event. PICTURES April Fools Rallye

A New Monthly Cars & Coffee We have just learned that a Cars & Coffee has just started up in Sonoma, on the 2 nd Sunday of each month. The location is th St. E in Sonoma, weather permitting. The hours are 9AM to NOON, and all makes and models are WELCOME. The Sonoma Smog Center is the sponsor of this event. April Coddingtown Cars & Coffee By Bob Jenkins I thought it might rain so I wasn t going to go, but I woke up early and found it was not raining, so headed over to Coddingtown to see what cars would show up. The turn-out was about the same number as the March event, but I learned that now there was Cars & Coffee over in Sonoma, also on the second Sunday, and as time passed some of the cars starting leaving and heading there as the Sonoma event ran til noon. There were several Rat Rods and more trucks, four Corvettes, many fifty s cars, and older Nash, a 911 Porsche and my Z. Come out next month and see what shows up.
