1 HAXL-TEC-11.2 D170 AND D190 GENUINE SPICER OUTPUT SHAFT BEARING RACE PARTS CHANGE - REVISED DATE: May 17, 2013 SERVICE/TECHNICAL TO: All Dana Spicer Parts Heavy Axle Customers Affected Models: All D170, D190 Dana has made a significant design change to the output shaft bearing components used on the Genuine Spicer differential models listed above. Effective the week of October 24 th 2011, new size bearing cups will be utilized resulting in the repositioning of the machined snap ring groove on all forward D170 axle housings and D190 bolt on housing covers. Before the implementation of this change, Dana had been using an interim configuration since June In those axle builds a unique combination of parts was being utilized. This included the use of a housing spacer and a combination of bearing cups and Dana has released a new output shaft bearing kit, axle housing cover kit and all new D170 axle housings. All original and interim design D170 axle housings are now replaced by new axle housings as shown in the chart on page 3. When replacing any of the output bearing parts for any configuration in the field, the use of correct components or kits is important. The individual bearing parts and service kits are available for any of the configurations that exist in the field today. These items are detailed in charts on the next page. Chart-N is for the NEW configuration, Chart-O for ORIGINAL configuration and Chart-I for the INTERIM configuration. A complete D170 axle housing supersession chart is shown on page 3 of this bulletin. Additionally replacement of original product in the field by customers from previous repairs could be possible. parts should always be confirmed by identifying the original removed parts before parts are ordered or installed. From June 2010 thru Oct 24 th 2011 axle assemblies used a bearing spacer in addition to the bearing cup combination of / The snap ring groove location change was introduced but required the use of the spacer too. Check individual component identification or confirm vehicle build or serial number information if available. This kit contains a replacement output nut and oil seal. NOTE: The new kit can be used as an alternate replacement for the parts kit, but the housing spacer , inner bearing cup and original snap ring MUST NOT be used. Use only the parts supplied in the kit. 3 D170 AXLE HOUSING REPLACEMENT CHART: The chart below shows the supersession of all D170 design axle housings. Axle housings identified with an * were actively sold thru service and are considered the most utilized D170 design housings is use. NOTE: All NEW axle housings released for service by Dana are now sold less the traditional miscellaneous hardware parts such as studs, washers, capscrews, plugs and breather parts. These parts are available and sold in kit form and are shown on page 4 of this bulletin. Assembly or mixing of wrong parts could lead to pre-mature failures. Always check compatibility of parts before final assembly! Use replacement charts and reference notes to determine correct replacement parts. Check with the OEM for vehicle build data if identification of components cannot be done. Always use Spicer Genuine replacement parts, failure to use Genuine Spicer replacement parts could lead to pre-mature failures in assemblies and could void any existing warranty on the component or axle assembly involved.
