3 Background Piedmont Improvement Program First, some history PIP My Ride PM Style

4 Background Piedmont Improvement Program First, some history Carolinian passenger rail service resumes after 5-year hiatus in 1990, followed by Piedmont in Southeast High Speed Rail Corridor (SEHSR) designated by USDOT from Washington to Charlotte in NCDOT begins signalizing all crossings (1,090 since 1992) on passenger routes and closing redundant crossings (189 since 1992). 1995: Sealed Corridor initiative to further improve crossing safety begins. By 2007, USDOT estimates the project potentially saved 19.7 lives. PIP My Ride PM Style

5 Background 2002 present: Train stations and multimodal centers refurbished/built statewide with FHWA Enhancement Funds and NCDOT Moving Ahead Funds Piedmont fleet equipment upgraded and/or refurbished Tracks/sidings upgraded for fewer delays and allow longer freight trains Signals added/curves smoothed to allow higher speeds Studies look at passenger service to Eastern and Western North Carolina 2010 Demand increases, midday Piedmont service added J. Douglas Galyon Depot, Greensboro s premier multi-modal transportation center. PIP My Ride PM Style

6 Background 2009 NCDOT was awarded $546.5 million in FRA grants to fund a series of rail projects along the Piedmont corridor between Charlotte and Raleigh. Grants benefit Passenger and Freight: Safer and more reliable train service Increased railroad capacity Job growth and commercial development opportunities Better connectivity between Raleigh and Charlotte and towns in between Better equipment and stations to support North Carolina s Piedmont and Carolinian train service Introduction of a 3 rd and 4 th Frequency PIP My Ride PM Style
