>> Western Carolina s - start to the season is the slowest in program history with records back to the Catamounts opened the year - overall under former head coach Jack Leggett that team finished the year -, but won both the Southern Conference regular season (- league mark) and tournament titles; >> WCU is coming off a Sunday afternoon win over MAC preseason favorite, Kent State, that snapped a -game losing skid, the longest winless drought in program history and the longest under -year head coach BOBBY MORANDA This spring s winless drought usurps the previous program long of eightstraight defeats that spanned Feb - March of the season, the first under former head coach TODD RALEIGH; >> Following a regular season runner-up finish in the program s FOURTH, top-two finish over the past FIVE years the Catamount baseball team was predicted to finish in a tie for fourth-place by the league s nine head coaches and was tabbed fifth in the preseason media voting; >> For WCU, the fourth-place pick in the coaches poll is the lowest since also being tabbed fourth prior to However, the fifth-place prediction by the voting media was the lowest for a Catamount baseball team since when WCU was tagged sixth despite a predicted runner-up finish from the coaches WCU went on to post a -win season in, winning the regular season and making a push for an at-large bid into the NCAA postseason >> WCU was the only team not represented on the preseason All-SoCon team Four of WCU s five postseason honorees from a season ago are no longer on the team with the exception of reigning SoCon Player of the Year, current volunteer assistant BRYSON BOWMAN, and SoCon All-Freshman team honoree, OF ANDREW ROBINSON Still, the void of a Catamount on the preseason all-conference squad is extremely rare over the past years, WCU has managed at least one selection a season, twice landing just one player on the honorary squad in (Ross Heffley, nd team) and (Steven Strausbaugh, st team), and putting a league-high six on the list in WCU PROJECTED WEEKEND STARTING PITCHERS: # PLAYER L/R CL ERA W-L IP BB K NOTES Chase Walter RHP R-Fr - Transfer;
