4 PIONEER LEAGUE CHAMPIONS: PROGRAM 4 Game #5 Home Game #1 First Half Game #5 vs. GTF #1 TONIGHT The Osprey arrive home at Ogren Park at Allegiance Field for their 2017 home opener against the Great Falls Voyagers. After finishing their four-game series in Bilings by dropping the final two, manager Mike Benjamin will hand the ball to 25-year-old sinkerballer Tyler Vail, in hopes of plugging the early-season leak in the starting rotation. Through the campaign s first four games, the Osprey starting staff has been roughed up for a 7.53 ERA. Compounding their early struggles on the mound has been a flurry of errors that have complicated matters for the pitching staff, with 12 misplays placing the O s in a last-place tie in the Pioneer League. Last night, Missoula was guilty of a season-high five errors. During the two-game skid, Missoula has committed 9 errors in just 16 innings in the field. AROUND THE WORLD ON OPENING DAY Of the 32 players on the O s roster, 21 hail from nations other than the United States. In total, there are 9 different countries represented on the O s roster. The USA has the most representatives (7), the Dominican Republic (10) has the second-most representatives, Venezuela is third (5), and six countries have one representative apiece: Canada, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Mexico and Taiwan. MUSICAL ROSTERS On Friday, the Osprey announced the first series of players taken in the 2017 draft to be assigned to Missoula. Outfielder Ernie De La Trinidad (UNLV), infielders Keshawn Lynch (State College of Florida) and Ryan Grotjohn (CSU Bakersfield), and catcher Dominic Miroglio (San Francisco) are each set to dress for the O s for the first time. Additionally, rejoining the team after a two-day stint with Hillsboro is catcher Gavin Stupienski, who was a member of Missoula s opening day roster in. LAST GAME (6/22) F MIS BIL x 15 WP: M. Blandino (1-0) LP: B. Muller (0-1) Save: N/A HR: L. Lara (1) Missoula committed 5 errors in the field and the bats uncorked 14 base hits to spoil the homecoming of native Brady Muller. TODAY S GAME Voyagers (4-0, 0-0 Road) vs. Missoula Osprey (1-3, 0-0 Home) 1st Place, Pioneer League North, 0.0 GB 3rd Place, Pioneer League North, 3.0 GB Friday, June 23rd Ogren Park at Allegiance Field Missoula, MT Starting Pitchers: RHP Tyler Vail (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. RHP Kyle Von Ruden (0-0, 0.00 ERA) REVIEWING THE ROAD TRIP Missoula has designs on correcting course following their road series in that sent them home losers of three games, culminting in a one-sided 15-4 romp last night. While the O s managed to win Tuesday night s game 5-3, the theme of quiet bats persisted through the series, partially a precipitant of the club s weak hitting with runners in scoring position. Missoula hit just.235 (8-for-34) with runners in scoring position and.182 (12-for-66) witth runners on base during their four-game tilt with. On the mound, the Osprey received three starts that lasted less than five innings and an overall 0-2 record with a 7.53 ERA on the trip. Tonight s game marks right-hander Tyler Vail s first start, as the former Oakland Athletics farmhand and independent leaguer toes the rubber hoping for some relief. OSPREY DIG THE LONGBALL At the end of the 2016 season, Missoula s total of 90 home runs in 75 games was the most in the Pioneer League, 2 home runs better than Ogden s total of 88. The next closest team was Orem, who hit 56 homers. The O s power production last summer was the second-best in franchise history, ceding ground only to the 2011 squad that hit 94 homers in 76 games. So far in 2017, however, the Osprey have struggled to hit the ball out, notching hust two home runs in their first four games, currently the second-lowest total in the Pioneer League. Last night s homer for Luis Lara ended a drought of more than 33 innings between home runs for the O s. Their first and only other was hit by Andy Yerzy in his first at-bat of the season on June 19.
