5 PETE WILK Head Coach 19th season Pete Wilk enters his 19th season as the head coach of the Georgetown baseball program in 2018 after taking over duties in the fall of 1999 and helping to rebuild the program in that time. On the field, the Hoyas have become a competitive program in the always-tough BIG EAST Conference and his 375 wins make him the all-time winningest coach in program history. Off the field, his team has been successful in the classroom and involved in the community, both on-campus and off. The Hoyas finished the 2017 season with a overall record, tying for the third most wins in program history. The 27 wins were also the most by a Georgetown team since 1985 and it was the third-straight season, and fourth in five years, that the Hoyas reached the 25-win plateau. Following the season, Jake Kuzbel was named a CoSIDA Academic All-American, and Simon Mathews signed a free agent contract with the Los Angeles Angels. In 2016, Georgetown defeated two ranked teams on the road, winning at No. 15 Florida Atlantic and No. 23 Creighton. The Blue & Gray tied a program record with four All-BIG EAST selections and had three players sign professional contracts after the season. In 2015, Wilk led the Hoyas to a overall record and qualified for the BIG EAST Championships for the first time in 29 years with an 8-10 conference record. The Hoyas set a program record with a 3.95 ERA in 2015 while Nick Collins was named the BIG EAST Player of the Year, becoming the first ever Player of the Year in Georgetown s history. Additionally, the Hoyas had a program-record four players named to All-BIG EAST teams and three Hoyas selected in the 2015 MLB Draft. In 2012, the Hoyas won 24 games overall, including 10 in the BIG EAST and went into the final day of play in the regular season with a chance to make the BIG EAST Tournament. In 2004 and 2005, Wilk guided the team to its most successful two-season win total (50) since the seasons. Wilk also was named Coach of the Year by The Hoya for his efforts in During his tenure on the Hilltop, Wilk has implemented a Career Night for current Hoya baseball players to get career advice and network with GU baseball alumni. Georgetown players have also been involved in community efforts, working with the on-campus Hoya Dreams program and annually taking part in the D.C. Heart Walk, which raises money for the American Heart Association as well as volunteering with several other off-campus projects. Wilk has also initiated the preseason First Pitch Dinner which is a fundraiser exclusively for the baseball program. The inaugural First Pitch Dinner in 2005 featured Terry Francona, manager of the 2004 World Champion Boston Red Sox, as the guest speaker and television and radio personality Mike Barnicle as the emcee. Since that time, other sports luminaries such as ESPN analyst Tim Kurkjian, National Baseball Hall of Fame members Johnny Bench and Dave Winfield, 1980 U.S. hockey goalie Jim Craig, former Major League pitcher Jamie Moyer, former major league umpire Bruce Froemming, Tim Russert from NBC s Meet the Press, Baltimore Orioles General Manager Dan Duquette and New York Mets General Manager Sandy Alderson have joined the Hoyas at their season-opening event. Wilk has seen several Georgetown players move onto the professional ranks. Two Hoyas were selected in the 2016 MLB draft, as Matt Smith (Milwaukee Brewers, 34th round) and David Ellingson (Seattle Mariners, 34th round) both heard their names called. In 2015, a program-record three Hoyas were taken in the draft, led by Nick Collins who went in the eighth round to the Oakland Athletics. Additionally, Curtiss Pomeroy (Atlanta Braves, 28th round) and AC Carter (Colorado Rockies, 40th round) were selected. Previously, Mike Garza (Milwaukee Brewers, 20th round) and Justin Leeson (Kansas City Royals, 39th) were both drafted in 2012 while Erick Fernandez (Washington Nationals, 25th) and Rand Ravnaas (Pittsburgh Pirates, 39th) were both drafted in 2011 after Fernandez (Washington Nationals, 46th) and Tim Adleman (Baltimore Orioles, 24th) heard their names called in 2010 and Matt Bouchard (New York Mets, 11th) was selected in the 2007 draft. Additionally, four other former players Simon Mathews (C 17), Eddie Pena (B 05), Michael Lombardi (B 04) and Eric Sutton ( 02) - all signed free agent contracts following their graduation. First Pitch Dinner Speakers 2005 Terry Francona (MLB Manager) 2006 Tim Russert (NBC s Meet the Press) / David Forst (Oakland Athletics Assistant GM) Mike Barnicle (Former Boston Globe Columnist) (emcee) 2007 Johnny Bench (MLB Hall of Fame Catcher) / Chris Young (MLB Pitcher) 2008 Bruce Froemming (Former MLB Umpire) 2009 Tim Kurkjian (MLB Analyst for ESPN) 2010 Jim Craig (Goaltender for Gold Medal-winning 1980 U.S. Olympic Ice Hockey Team) 2011 Jamie Moyer (Former MLB Pitcher) 2012 Dave Winfield (MLB Hall of Fame Outfielder) 2013 Larry Bowa (Former MLB Manager, current Philadelphia Phillies Bench Coach) 2014 Dan Duquette (Executive VP of Baseball Operations for the Baltimore Orioles) 2015 Sandy Alderson (New York Mets General Manager) 2016 Davey Johnson (Former All-Star Second Baseman and Manager) Hometown: Barrington, R.I.
