1 Newsletter September 2004 A Word from The Commissioner Congratulations to everyone on a GREAT year in WESA! This year has not only been about change, but about trying to preserve the few idiosyncrasies that are special to WESA. These include the draft, Miss WESA, Pac Cup and hopefully some new traditions that have been started this year. I want to give enormous credit to this year s commission members; Scott Fullerton, Brad Allen, Rick Larsen, and Art Gullett for all of their hard work and commitment to our vision for WESA. I also want to thank Ron Larsen for stepping forward at a time when we had no Vice- Commissioner and agreeing to take on the role of Tournament Director for the 25 th Annual Pac Cup. I want to thank our team and league sponsors. Their generous support allows us to keep the cost of our memberships, one of the best deals in Vancouver. One of my main goals this year was to put the fun back into WESA. From all accounts, we have accomplished that goal. I look forward to next year and next year s registration, and in seeing all the returning faces from this year, from past years and from all the new people that want to join WESA based on the success of this past season. 2 TREASURER Firstly, to the business at hand, your commission has diligently used the money this year on executing a task to ensure all monies raised are used in the most appropriate way. We decided as a group to try to attract new members by advertising at the start of the year through media, word of mouth and the distribution of posters. Additionally, we decided to spend additional monies on this year s parade. I think you will agree that it was money well spent. We will again have a surplus this year. Final accounting is not yet complete but it looks like all areas of our original budgets have met their guidelines. Going forward, the commission members have a few ideas that we will put to the new commission in terms of spending that surplus on league operations. To my fellow commission members, your dedication and hard work was truly inspirational. When I think of the successes we had this past year, I think of: Art, what a year, your special events were awesome and it led to team building and the meeting of a whole new level of friendships Scott, what can I say! You were on top of league rules and regs in every way. Stats were done on time and very well executed. Rick, truly great note taking and a big part of decision making. Your ideas were a breath of fresh air. Ron, truly a great job at organizing PAC CUP this past year. Although it has been a challenging year, I have appreciated being part of a great commission and look forward to continued program implementation in To all the ball players, I hope you had a great time and we look forward to all of you bringing new players out to try our new - look WESA. 4 SECRETARY Well another baseball season has come and gone and I think the 2004 season was excellent. It was great this year seeing so many new players! I want to thank the entire league for being so positive with the changes we implemented for the 2004 season. The commission heard loud and clear last year that the members wanted changes for 2004 season and I want to thank Sydney, Scott, Art and Brad for implementing those changes. I wish the new commission for 2005 season the best of luck! To all the WESA members I hope you have a great fall/winter and we will see you on the diamond next spring! INDIVIDUAL AWARD WINNERS. SA = ((H*1)+(2B*2)+(3B*3)+(HR*4)) / (AB-BB-SF) On Base Definition On base percentage is used to gauge how often a player safely reaches base. It is computed by adding the total number of hits and walks, then dividing by the total number of at bats. OB =(H+2B+3B+HR+BB) / AB 4

5 SPECIAL EVENTS WOW!!! What a year. When I think back over the 20 years I have played in WESA I can t think of another year that was so rewarding for me. Almost a year ago this years Commission met and started to brainstorm on what could be done to make WESA grow as an organization. Many months of meetings and surveys resulted in what happened this year in WESA. I am very proud to have been a part of the team that feels the decisions made this year will benefit the growth of our league in the future. I want to thank my fellow Commissioners for a great job they did, it was a pleasure working with all of them. I have been involved with the WESA Commission countless times in the past but for my position of Special Events Commissioner this year I was fortunate to have a great group helping me with some old and some new events. The host bar parties were a great success and the Buddy team was a new concept that hopefully will develop and grow. I would like thank the many people for helping with the Pride Float, Miss WESA and the DVD release party. I need to mention a special few who were the heart and soul of the Special Events Committee. Thank you Jamie Simpson, Mike FitzGerald, Greg Wolchyn and Paul Kingston. A very special thank you to Doug Philp for his hours and hours of design and production of the two videos released this year. To Michael Hornby of F212 a big thank you for all you did to make my job easier. I am hoping that this year we will be able to donate close to $5, to our charities this year. In closing I would like to say that I am especially thankful for the many new friends I made this year.it is an exciting time for WESA. Art Gullett Special Events RULES AND REGULATIONS It has simply been an amazing year. I have been on various volunteer boards over the past 8 years and the experience I felt during my first year on the WESA Commission has been unparalleled. A HUGE thank you and hug to my fellow Commission members. Only through the tireless efforts of Sydney, Art, Brad and Rick could the amazing 2004 season have happened. Ron Larsen deserves a special thank you for taking on the PAC CUP Tournament. It is never easy to plan a tournament and he and his volunteers did a great job. I also want to thank the many score keepers who helped me out keeping track of each hit and run. GREAT JOB. I hope to expand this group of people next year. The final thank you is the most important it goes out to each and every WESA Member and supporter. It is only with your love of the game and open minds that this incredible season was possible.
