LHP Sean Newcomb (12-9, 4.04) vs. RHP Jacob degrom (9-9, 1.77) SNY WOR 710 AM WAXQ-FM HD 2 ESPN 1050 AM New YORK METS (73-84) FOURTH PLACE, NL EAST, GB WELCOME: As the Mets and Major League Baseball celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, the Mets are proud to honor Ozzie Virgil, Sr. tonight...osvaldo Jose Virgil, Sr., 86, has worked in the Mets organization for the last 11 years, overseeing the catching instruction for the Mets Dominican Summer League teams...he was the very first Dominican-born player to appear in the major leagues when he broke through on September 23, 1956 with the New York Giants...Ozzie would go on to play parts of nine seasons in the majors with four other teams...virgil was born in Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic and his family moved to the US when he was just 13...He graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx...Virgil served in the United States Marines prior to beginning his professional baseball career...he is a member of the Latin Baseball Hall of Fame and the Dominican Baseball Hall of Fame, and has spent over 70 years working in professional baseball, including coaching in the majors for 19 years...his son, Ozzie, Jr. played 11 years in the majors.
