Every team has an MVP certificate to redeem, and Managers or the honored player can come to the office and see Kim Callanan, Tony Anarumo or Rob Giffen to get the award order taken care of. The team award, which goes to any team winning at least 5 games in the World Series, can be redeemed at the office as well. Notebook continued from page 1 time to replace a body s fluids once they are depleted. Pitching For the record, here is a recap on the rules on pitching eligibility for the playoffs. Roy Hobbs requirement is that all pitchers who will be starters or closers in save situations (3-run or less difference in the 8 th and 9 th innings) qualify for the playoffs by pitching at least 2 innings 6 outs or 15 hitters during pool play. This is a reminder to all managers that all pitching statistics need to be updated through the first 4 games by noon Wednesday. Finally, in the playoffs, those non-qualified middleinning pitchers will come to the mound from their normal defensive positions where they started the game. It is important as the spirit of the rule is that these nonqualified pitchers who are used as inning-eaters are players who ordinarily are playing other positions. So here s a reminder to Managers to enter their statistics after each game on line. The program will give you cumulative totals for all your games, and Roy Hobbs will be checking those on Wednesday morning to produce pitching data to determine which pitchers will be eligible for starting-closing roles in the playoffs. Ice for the injured Just a reminder that Roy Hobbs is willing to furnish ice for injuries. However, we advise managers from the start that they need to provide ice for pitchers arms, if needed. Picking up T-shirts The tournament T-shirt is available for all registered players outside the main concession stand near the Roy Hobbs Store on the Concourse at Lee County Stadium. Hours to pick up the Tournament T-shirt are from Noon to 6 p.m. With the shirt, each player will get a tournament patch. Exception is Wednesday when concessions are closed. Players will need their RHWS ID card to get their shirts No drivers licenses needed. Results corrections Please check the posted results and standings each day. No card, no play, and Roy Hobbs reserves the right to do card checks at games. Players without their ID cards will not be allowed to continue to play and will be required to bring his ID card to the Tournament Director or Site Manager before being allowed to return to the playing field. Replacement cards are available at the Roy Hobbs Headquarters. Bring a photo ID to verify identity, and the fee is $5. So, please don t lose the card and please keep it with you. Team photo plan Just a reminder that if any team wants to get signed up for the photo plan this week, the manager should call Greg Wagner at either (office phone) or (cell phone) any time on Monday in order to get on the schedule for Tuesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday. Time is of the essence now, and Wagner Photography would need to hear from interested teams on Monday, even if it s Monday night. Please help with dugouts Roy Hobbs Baseball and the grounds crews need your help in the dugouts. Several dugouts were left pretty messy after Sunday s games. When your games are over and you are leaving the dugout, please police it for trash and cups, etc. Your assistance in cleaning up the dugouts each day will be greatly appreciated.

8 8 Making Memories at the World Series If a history of the Roy Hobbs World Series is written, one man has the photos from 23 of the 24 seasons. A familiar figure on the fields, he s there with a long lens and seems to have a knack for clicking the shutter at just the right moment capturing the great fly ball catch that robbed a hitter of a home run. Or that slide into home that would make play of the day, Greg Wagner, 58, is a self-taught photographer, a hobby turned fulltime career. It sort of came to me naturally. He has only missed one year, 1992, the year before Ellen and Tom Giffen took over operation of the Series. He looks forward to each New Year to renew old acquaintances. It s like a family reunion. He used his film camera, a Minolta until 2006 when he turned to the new digital Cannon. His lenses consist of 400, 600 and 800 millimeter. That 800 job is how he can get those good shots of outfielders otherwise they just look like ants in pictures. There s only one drawback to those long lenses. Greg doesn t like the wind. It can whip around that lenses and make holding it steady a bit on the hard side. Greg has his negatives from He has so many of those that he has not had them scanned onto disk. His digital shots are easier to save, but if somebody wants an old shot, he s more than willing to accommodate. And one such request came about this year when a the widow of Paul Parker, who played on with the New Jersey Wonderboys, wanted copies of a photo Greg had taken. She told him it was her favorite. Shortly before the request, Greg had seen a news story about a 12-year-old girl who was in a truck with her grandfather when he suffered a heart attack with the pickup going 80 miles an hour. She unbuckled her seatbelt, slid over to push on the brake and steer the car off the road and into bushes and trees, thus averting what could have been a disaster. She was Miranda Bowman of Burlington Township, N.J. She was hailed as a hero and received an award. Greg asked the woman if her husband was the grandfather. She answered yes. She wanted four 5X7 prints. Greg decided he d send her 6. When he told the story to the lab techs, they added 2 more free prints, so she got a total of 8.
