The first annual Roy Hobbs Baseball & Brews brewery tour will be held Wednesday and Friday nights this week during the Veterans Division play. The tours will run from 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. from the Player Development Complex parking lot. Cost is $45 per person, and Southwest Florida Brewery Tours will take 14 customers to 3 breweries for flights and samples of their beers. By Glenn Miller Roy Hobbs Baseball Bernie Ellison is the man with the plan for the Long Island Yankees. He has a plan for everything, from lineups to logistics to packing. Nothing is left to chance for the 62-year-old Long Island CPA and Yankees manager. Every team needs a Bernie Ellison, somebody who will not only make out lineup cards but also take care of the countless details that need to be done to get teams on the field. His preparation is unbelievable, the Yankees Frank Esposito said Sunday before their first 2016 game at CenturyLink Sports Complex. He runs at least three or four tournaments a year. He s got guys from all over the country. It s a lot of works getting everybody together in the right spot. Ellison s many duties include finding players. And where does he find them? Ever hear of Riker s Island? the Yankees Eric Colon jokingly said, referring to a New York City prison. An example of Ellison s attention to detail is his packing list, a typed summary of everything he needs to bring to Fort Myers. Under the category Baseball Bag is 12 items. They include practice baseballs, elbow pads and two batting gloves. Under suitcase he lists 40 items such as flip-flops. For carryon plane there are 7 items such as gum and Sudafed. It s more than organizational skill and preparation that make Ellison vital to the Yankees. People skills, the Yankees Bill Slawsky said. But organizational skills are critical. I think that s what it is, Ellison said. I definitely think that helps me. Sometimes it gets to be a bit much because in two weeks I ll be here doing 60 and over. Although all AAAA managers have been invited to participate on the committee, any interested managers are welcome to come and be involved too. Eight teams will continue in 4A playoffs, with 2 teams dropping to the overall pool where they will play on Thursday. Picking up T-Shirts The tournament T-shirt is available through Friday only for all registered players outside the Roy Hobbs Store in the screened in patio at the Player Development Complex. No Shirts will be given out on Wednesdays or Saturdays. Hours to pick up the Tournament T-shirt are from Noon to 6 p.m. With the shirt, each player will get a tournament patch. Players will need their RHWS ID card to get their shirts, no exceptions No drivers licenses needed. Results corrections Please check the posted results and standings each day. Managers should contact Rob at the Tournament Headquarters ( ) with corrections to scores. That s the best way to make sure that playoff seedings and pairings are as accurate as we can make them. Please help with dugouts Roy Hobbs Baseball and the grounds crews need your help in the dugouts. 6 6 NOTEBOOK From page 2 cleaning up the dugouts each day will be greatly appreciated. 50/50 raffle 50/50 raffle tickets, to benefit the Roy Hobbs Foundation, are available each day at the Player Development Complex. Tickets are $1 apiece or 6 for $5. The drawing will be held in the patio area at the Player Development Complex at 5 PM Friday. The Roy Hobbs Foundation was established to raise monies for research on finding a cure for Leukemia and to assist our Challenged Athlete friends. Admission, $1 a game Admission continues at the Roy Hobbs World Series. Admission is $1 per game. Players will pay their $1 at check-in for their player ID card that guarantees them access to all games in which they are not playing. Spectators will pay $1 for entrance into each complex and are good for one day. Roy Hobbs will have available a Tournament pass for each adult for $5. The tournament pass is a wristband that guarantees admission for that person for the duration of the RHWS. The Tournament wristband passes are available at check-in registration, at the Hobbs headquarters at PDC or from the Site Concierge at each of the playing sites. Playing site security The active steps taken several years ago to deal with parking lot security will continue as parking lot theft issues have knock on wood not been an issue the last 6 years. Are we out of the woods? No, it is a daily procedure and effort to make sure parking lots are safe. You can help by not leaving valuables exposed in your vehicles. Once again, Roy Hobbs will have personnel posted at the player/spectators entrances to Terry Park, PDC, JetBlue Complex and at the entrance to the Quad fields at Lee County. These individuals will have a view of the parking lot, and they will be available in emergencies, be enforcing cooler guidelines and handling admissions. Customer Service Roy Hobbs Baseball is proud of its record on customer service. Staff members are required to wear identifying staff shirts during the working hours of the tournament and should be easily identifiable. At least two are assigned to each of the satellite complexes daily. In the case of emergency, please go to the nearest concession stand at the satellite complexes, where someone will be available to summon help. Roy Hobbs field managers and key personnel are Red Cross First Aid certified, and Roy Hobbs Baseball has guidelines in place on the handling of injuries. Additionally, AED devices are available at each of the facilities, and Roy Hobbs personnel have been trained on those devices. First Aid Two key First Aid items: Drink plenty of fluids while playing; don t just wait until the game is over. Water will be available at the fields. Second, be sure to stretch and loosen up before playing, or even re-entering a game.

He coached his two sons, Bryan, 27, and Alex, 25, in travel ball and Little League when they were boys. The Sunday game against the New Jersey Rangers was a continuation of the 2015 Masters A Championship game that was rained out and led to Ellison s Yankees and the Rangers (then the Texas A s of New Jersey) being named cochampions. Yanks bag 2015 Masters A bragging rights from NJ Rangers The Long Island Yankees defeated the New Jersey Rangers 8-3 Sunday morning at Hammond Stadium at Centurylink Sports Complex. It gave the Yankees bragging rights to the 2015 Roy Hobbs Masters Division A championship, which was rained out last November. The Yankees and the then Texas A s of New Jersey were halted by rain a year ago early in the game at Terry Park. Roy Hobbs was unable to get the game restarted and players left before a solution could be found. Roy Hobbs then declared the Masters A championship a cochampionship and split the awards. But, in keeping with Roy Hobbs philosophy of not leaving loose ends, if possible, the teams were scheduled to play the first Lee County stadium game of the 2016 World Series. However, in the co-championship, neither of the teams will be allowed to compete in the A Division playoffs this year. Congratulations to the Long Island Yankees.
