By MIKE MURPHEY Roy Hobbs Baseball I don t want people to look at it as just a deck of cards, says Ellen Giffen. Obviously it is a deck of cards, but, she explains, that s not why we created them. Stop by the RHWS Pro Shop this week and shuffle through a pack of the 21 st Roy Hobbs World Series commemorative cards and you ll find 20 years worth of memories. You ll find a history of an event and an organization that has come to be a centerpiece in the lives and passions of baseball players around the world. You ll find a tribute to all of us who refuse to let age intrude on the exhilaration of stepping onto a baseball field. And you ll find testimony to what is at the core of Roy Hobbs Baseball all the relationships rooted in baseball that transcend the game to continually enrich our lives. Each year the Roy Hobbs staff seeks a theme upon which to build the World Series program and promotional campaign. For the 21 st year, Ellen said, the obvious thing would have been to focus on something related to growing up, but they d already used a coming of age theme for the 18 th World Series. So they looked for other variations on the 21 theme and came up with Blackjack. Then with diamonds and aces and other baseball terms intertwined, the leap to a deck of cards was easy. The back is a variation of a traditional Hoyle card-deck-type of design. The faces of the cards consist of the 20 previous Roy Hobbs program covers and also named photos of the nine men who have participated in all 20 Roy Hobbs World Series tournaments. There are three jokers in the deck one with a photo of Ellen as Rosie the Baseball Clown, symbolizing the Roy Hobbs relationship with the Challenger Baseball program; a photo of Tom Giffen and Hobbs, symbolic of the Roy Hobbs commitment to support of leukemia research; and a photo of Todd Windhorst the clown, symbolic of clowns everywhere. see CARDS on page 3

2 2 Timeless stealing rules adjusted Timeless (70+) Division managers agreed to limited base-stealing rules in a meeting with Roy Hobbs World Series officials Sunday afternoon. The Timeless Division will feature its inaugural games Monday, with the Western Silver Foxes playing the New Jersey Cardinals and New England Red Sox in games on Lee County field 3 at 10 a.m. and 1:45 p.m. The 3-team Timeless Division will follow the same rules as used by the Vintage (65+) Division last week, with two exceptions. First, all games are 7 innings. Second and here s the change teams are limited to 2 stolen bases per inning. Additionally, runners may steal in the following circumstances: Runner on first or second base or runners on first and second base. Specifically prohibited will be stealing with runners on first and third. The managers determined that should runners engage in illegal steals, the ball will be declared dead by the umpires and all runners retuned to their bases. Roy Hobbs has no problem with this compromise on stealing in the 70s division, Roy Hobbs President Tom Giffen said. Yes, we want to make the baseball as real as possible, but at the same time, it does not benefit the game to have a walk be an automatic double. The rule agreement also included a codicil that the stealing rules will be reviewed after the first four games. The players told us in the survey last year that they want stealing, Giffen said. I think we need to keep it as part of the game, but we need to be judicious and creative in how we do it. Spirit wins 3 rd 65s title The Chicago Spirit defeated the Western Silver Foxes 13-3 to win the 2009 RHWS Vintage (65+) Division championship at Lee County Stadium Sunday morning. It was the 7 th championship meeting between the Foxes and the Spirit in their rivalry, which spans both Roy Hobbs Baseball and MSBL s Phoenix event. With Sunday s victory, The Spirit now holds a 4-3 edge in this series, and the victory gave the Spirit their third consecutive Roy Hobbs championship. In the secondary championship game, the Washington Nationals defeated the American National Wildcats 14-5, Saturday afternoon. 50/50 raffle 50/50 raffle tickets, to benefit the Roy Hobbs Foundation, are available each day at the concession Notebook stands at each of the playing venues and at the World Series T-shirt pickup stand at Lee County Stadium. The Veterans week pot was $913 with $ to the winner. The Masters week pot was $1503 with $ to the winner. After Saturday-Sunday, more than $1000 worth of tickets have been sold for Week 4. Tickets are $1 apiece or 6 for $5. The Roy Hobbs Foundation was established to raise monies for research on finding a cure for Leukemia and to assist our Challenged Athlete friends. 10-, 15- & 20-year recognition Have you been at the Roy Hobbs World Series 10 or more years? 3 continued from page 1 Cards The faces of the other cards consist of photos ranging over the years that together summarize why this is such a wonderful and powerful game in the lives of those who love it. Ellen says she was gratified last week to overhear a married couple veterans of may years of Roy Hobbs thumbing through a pack in the store, discussing the memories the pictures and program covers provoked. Sure, you can play cards with them, but those memories that s what the deck of cards is really all about. 4 4 Photo by Tom Moore Lynette and Stan Lederman Sunbeam girl brightens World Series Sidelines By TOM MOORE Roy Hobbs Baseball There s a celebrity at the 21 st Roy Hobbs World Series. But she was a celebrity when she was 5-years-old. And you ve probably seen her if you ve shopped for bread in the supermarkets. Today Lynette Lederman is a registered nurse who is enjoying the Roy Hobbs World Series with her Stan, who played and managed the Salem Pittsburgh Warlocks in the Masters Division and is managing the Ohio Classics team this week in the Classics Division. Lynette s parents entered her photo in a charming child contest in the New York Daily Mirror. She didn t win the contest but the Sunbeam people were looking for a girl to feature in their bread ads and found her picture in the Mirror file. They liked it and choose the 5-year-old Bridgeport, Conn., girl. That picture is still featured on some Sunbeam wrappers today. Guess she was a charming child after all, even if, as she says now, the compensation wasn t all that much in those days. And now she is a charming adult, who is very supportive of her attorney husband s baseball avocation, while she dabbles in politics as the executive assistant to the Pittsburgh City Council president. Lynette and Stan met in Los Angeles in She was on her way to Woodstock, but was visiting friends in Los Angeles. Stan was also visiting a friend in a singles complex. They hear a lot of noise and went to investigate and he and Lynette met. Following a long-distance courtship they were married three years later. Lynette says: We ve raised two athletics. Their son was an all conference catcher at Dickerson College and their daughter was into sports at Muhlenberg College. Lynette has a sports background. Her father worked for the Brooklyn Dodgers and she used to sit in the dugout with some very famous players. And husband Stan has quite a collection of memorable from the Dodgers. 5 Notebook Please help with dugouts Roy Hobbs Baseball needs your help in the dugouts. First, if there is a problem with water or cups, please let us know and we will attend to your concerns. Second, when your games are over and you are leaving the dugout, please police it for trash and cups, etc. Your assistance in cleaning up the dugouts each day will be greatly appreciated. Player ID cards Just a reminder that all players must have their player I.D. cards with them at games. No card, no play, and Roy Hobbs Baseball reserves the right to do card checks at games. Players without their ID cards will not be allowed to continue to play and will be required to bring his ID card to the Tournament Director or Site Manager before being allowed to return to the playing field. Replacement cards are available at the Roy Hobbs Headquarters. Bring a photo ID to verify identity, and the fee is $10. So, please don t lose the card and please keep it with you.
