Uribe's hesitation proves costly By Jordan Bastian / May 21st, 2016 BOSTON -- Given the way the Indians have played of late, a four-run deficit did not seem insurmountable on Saturday. The Indians have pulled off a handful of comebacks in recent weeks, fueling confidence in the dugout that no lead is safe for the opposition. In the seventh inning of Saturday's 9-1 loss to the Red Sox, though, a mental mistake by veteran third baseman Juan Uribe opened the floodgates and turned a close game into a blowout. Standing at his locker in Fenway Park's cramped visitors' clubhouse after the defeat, which ended Cleveland's five-game winning streak, Uribe made no excuses for his misstep. "This is my fault," Uribe said. Truth be told, Cleveland had been playing with fire all afternoon with Boston's potent lineup. By the end of the game, the Red Sox had 17 atbats with runners in scoring position and had loaded the bases on three occasions. For the most part, the Tribe had limited the damage, allowing four runs in the six frames leading up to Boston's five-run breakout in the seventh. Indians lefty Kyle Crockett took over in that inning and allowed two consecutive hits with one out, prompting an intentional walk to Jackie Bradley Jr. to load the bases. At that juncture, Tribe manager Terry Francona handed the ball to veteran Joba Chamberlain, who entered the evening with no home runs allowed and only one earned run relinquished through the season's first six weeks. Chamberlain did his job, inducing a ground ball off the bat of Boston's Christian Vazquez. "It just seemed like we were trying to wiggle out of stuff all day," Francona said. "We finally got the one inning where it's bases loaded and we get a double-play ball." It certainly looked like one. The infield was playing in and Uribe was shaded a touch farther from third than usual, but he was in a perfect position to scoop up the sharp grounder from Vazquez. Uribe gloved the ball and -- for a brief moment -- appeared headed to third base. Had he gone through with that approach, Uribe could have stepped on the bag and either fired the ball to first or to the plate for a possible inning-ending double play. Uribe hesitated, though, and he chose to throw to catcher Chris Gimenez for a forceout at home. "On his initial run, I thought he was going to tag third and throw to first," Gimenez said. "He ended up throwing to me. Looking back on it, that was probably his only decision other than tagging third and eating the ball. I think he was playing [too far] off the bag to get the double play." Mike Sarbaugh, Cleveland's third-base coach and infield instructor, agreed. "He maybe could've turned a double play," Sarbaugh said, "but in the heat of the moment, I get it. He was playing off the bag to where it would've been a tough play." From there, Chamberlain issued a bases-loaded walk to Blake Swihart before surrendering a grand slam to Mookie Betts. The Fenway faithful then cheered as Chamberlain -- once a villain in these parts when he wore the Yankees' pinstripes -- trudged off the mound. In a span of three batters, the Indians went from potentially escaping unscathed to staring down a nine-run deficit. "If it's not hit hard enough, [Uribe] knows he has to go to the plate," Francona said. "I think his initial thought was he was going to go to third, and then he realized he might not have time. It's happening fast for those guys -- I get it -- but that would've been huge. That's exactly what we needed right there." Uribe was kicking himself after the loss. "I was thinking of going to third base, and I moved a little bit over there," he said. "I talked to a couple guys and they told me I could've [tried for a double play]. This is my fault." Tribe's bats stymied, winning streak snapped By Ian Browne and Jordan Bastian / MLB.com May 21st, 2016 BOSTON -- Joe Kelly was brilliant in his return to action, firing 6 2/3 no-hit innings beforejuan Uribe cracked a double into the gap in rightcenter to break it up. Mookie Bettsbacked Kelly with two homers, including a grand slam, as the Red Sox rolled to a 9-1 victory over the Indians on Saturday at Fenway Park. Even if the no-hitter had stayed alive, Kelly wouldn't have been able to complete the game due to the fact it was his first game back from the disabled list and he was on a pitch count. The righty threw 104 pitches, the last of which Uribe hit for the double. "Overall command of the fastball was very big today," said Kelly. "I was throwing it to both sides of the plate. I just felt super strong out there. All the work we've been putting in since I went on the DL of getting the shoulder stronger in the training room, it's just good to go out there and not even think about it and get a little more extension on the fastball and all the other pitches with that strong shoulder." When manager John Farrell came out to get Kelly, the Fenway faithful gave him a standing ovation. Coming off a right shoulder impingement that had sidelined him since April 20, Kelly walked three (all of them during the fifth inning) and struck out seven. "Everything," said Indians manager Terry Francona, when asked what Kelly had working for him. "He's got a really good arm, as you could see. And then he started getting comfortable out of the windup. He started throwing breaking balls, even when he was down in the count, which makes it really tough." It was an all-around, strong day for the Red Sox, who jumped out with three runs in the third and led for the rest of the day. Jackie Bradley Jr. extended his hitting streak to 26 gameswith an infield hit in the sixth. The streak is the longest in the Major Leagues this season and the longest by a Red Sox player during a single season since Manny Ramirez in The Red Sox extended their franchise record streak of at least one homer to 21 games when Betts belted a solo homer that just cleared the Green Monster in the fourth. Boston blew it open with a five-run seventh, led by Betts hitting his second career slam. "I just want to have a good at-bat," said Betts. "I got a pretty good pitch to hit and put a good swing on it. I think if anyone is up at that point, you just kind of assume that something good is going to happen, and that's the way we handled our at-bats today." Trevor Bauer went five-plus innings in taking the loss for the Indians. He gave up eight hits and four runs. Cleveland's lone offensive breakthrough came in the ninth, when Carlos Santana belted a solo shot over the wall in left for his eighth homer of the season. MOMENTS THAT MATTERED Slapping around the leather: The Red Sox made a series of great defensive plays while Kelly's no-hitter was still in progress. Dustin Pedroia made a diving stop to take a hit away from Jason Kipnis in the fourth, Kelly helped himself by fielding a slow roller by Chris

Gimenez and firing home for the final out of the fifth. Hanley Ramirez made a fine play to his right against Kipnis in the sixth. And Bradley made a basket catch of a sinking liner to take a hit away from Byrd in the seventh, one batter before Uribe ended the no-no. "We played great defense," said Kelly. "Just all-around, that was a feel-good win. From pitching, to bullpen, to playing defense to hitting, it was fun to watch, and it was fun to be a part of." Walking the line: After Kelly opened his outing by retiring 13 straight batters, Carlos Santana drew a one-out walk in the fifth. Byrd and Lonnie Chisenhall also drew free passes, setting up a bases-loaded, two-out situation for the Tribe. Gimenez then chopped a pitch to the left of the mound, where Kelly made a backhanded grab before tossing the ball to catcher Ryan Hanigan. The catcher stepped on the plate just in time for the frame's final out. "I was sitting dead-red fastball middle away," Gimenez said. "I got two in a row and fouled them off. The last pitch was a backup slider. It's a borderline pitch. If I take it, it gets called a strike. If I swing, I can't do much with it. I just tried to put the best swing I could on it. I put two really good swings on those fastballs. It just didn't work out." Bradley keeps streak alive -- barely: After getting walked on eight pitches in his first two at-bats, Bradley finally got a chance to extend his streak in the bottom of the sixth. Facing Bauer, Bradley spun a 2-2 pitch up the middle and second baseman Jason Kipnis made a fine diving stop. The throw appeared to pull Santana slightly off the bag at first, allowing Bradley to just beat it out for an infield hit. Indians manager Terry Francona challenged the call, but the call stood because the replay official couldn't definitively tell if Santana's foot was in contact with the bag before Bradley crossed first. "Well, I think there's a clear strategy today. They're not going to give him a chance," said Farrell. "So we may have to adjust some things going forward just so he's got you know maybe a different slot in the lineup, just to be in the middle of potentially building an inning further. But you know, he's in a long streak here. You know his footspeed allowed him to extend it by the ground ball. Kipnis makes a nice play, but his speed forces him to throw it errantly so he continues on." More > Uribe's blunder: With one out and the bases loaded in the seventh, Tribe reliever Joba Chamberlain induced a possible double-play grounder off the bat of pinch-hitter Christian Vazquez. Uribe gloved the ball at third, but he hesitated and settled for a forceout at the plate. That misstep opened the floodgates for Boston, which blew things open in what turned into a five-run inning. "We get a double-play ball," Francona said. "He ends up going home and it turned into -- we just couldn't stop it after that. It's unfortunate. The way they were pitching, four [runs] seemed like a lot. So, then once they spread it out, it got really tough." More > QUOTABLE "They were just saying Statcast said it came off at like 85 [mph] and it went over the wall. That's pretty much all. Hey, whatever. A home run is a home run." -- Betts, on his teammates giving him a hard time on the grand slam, which had an exit velocity of 89-mph, according to Statcast SOUND SMART WITH YOUR FRIENDS Kelly is 7-0 with a 2.41 ERA in his last eight starts at Fenway Park. Overall, the righty has won his last 10 decisions over 13 starts dating back to Aug. 1, HANIGAN HURTS HAND Ryan Hanigan had to exit with a bruised left hand, sustained when he was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the sixth. Christian Vazquez pinch-hit for him in the seventh. X-rays were negative and Hanigan is expected to be fine. WHAT'S NEXT Indians: For Sunday's 1:35 p.m. ET finale of this three-game set at Fenway Park, the Indians will send right-hander Danny Salazar (4-2, 1.80 ERA) to the mound against the Red Sox. Salazar has 35 strikeouts and a.172 opponents' average in 27 innings (four starts) this month for the Tribe. Red Sox: Sinkerballer Rick Porcello will try to get back on track after failing to produce a quality start for just the second time this season in his last outing. Porcello has always enjoyed pitching against the Indians, going 9-4 with a 3.36 ERA against them in his career. Bradley among top prospect performers Saturday No. 89 overall prospect Bobby Bradley (Indians' No. 3) went 2-for-5 with his Carolina League leading 10th home run, but it wasn't enough to keep Class A Advanced Lynchburg from falling to Myrtle Beach. In addition to pacing the circuit in home runs, the 19-year-old first baseman also has the most RBIs (40), the second-most walks (32) and ranks fifth in both slugging (.514) and OPS (.896). Pipeline preview: Sheffield among prospects to watch Pitcher to watch: Justus Sheffield (Indians' No. 5) Sheffield, whom the Indians selected with the No. 31 overall pick in the 2014 Draft, made a smooth transition to full-season ball last season, when he went 9-4 with a 3.31 ERA and a 138/38 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 127 2/3 innings for Class A Lake County. That success has carried over into the 2016 season for the No. 100 overall prospect, who has pitched to a 2.76 ERA in 42 1/3 innings over eight starts for Class A Advanced Lynchburg. The 20-year-old southpaw has been particularly sharp of late for the Hillcats, with 12 strikeouts and just one run allowed in 12 2/3 innings between his last two starts. On Sunday, Sheffield and Lynchburg will square off against Myrtle Beach at 5:05 p.m. ET on MiLB.TV. Growing up, Salazar rooted for Red Sox By Quinn Roberts / MLB.com May 21st, 2016 BOSTON -- As a teenager growing up in Santo Domingo, Indians right-hander Danny Salazar followed one Major League team obsessively. "In the Dominican, it was either the Yankees or the Red Sox," Salazar said. "The Red Sox were my team." Salazar will make his second career start at Fenway Park on Sunday in the series finale. He's thrived against the Red Sox in two career starts, going 2-0 with a 1.46 ERA. The right-hander faced the club in his final start of 2015, allowing one run on four hits in 5 1/3 innings in Cleveland.

"I love coming here. It is so different from all of the others. Every ballpark now looks the same," Salazar said. "This one feels like a special place. Coming here after watching the team play is an amazing thing." Salazar is especially excited to face fellow countryman David Ortiz. The two have squared off five times, with Ortiz going 1-for-5 with an RBI double. "I just want to face him one last time before he retires. I don't care if he gets a home run or I strike him out. I just want to do it," Salazar said. "He's a guy I watched play when I was 12 years old. I wasn't even thinking about doing baseball for a living at that point. Now, being here and the same level he is, it is amazing." The right-hander was slated to face Ortiz and the rest of the Red Sox's lineup on April 7 in Cleveland, but a rainout bumped back his start and he didn't face Boston. It isn't just the Red Sox slugger or Fenway Park that has Salazar awestruck, it's also Red Sox great and Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez. "Being on the mound, Pedro Martinez pitched there. That is the best part," Salazar said. "I got to meet Pedro before my bullpen [session], and then he watched my bullpen [session]. I got pretty nervous. That's the first time I've been nervous during a bullpen [session]." Anderson to make spot start Monday By Jordan Bastian / May 21st, 2016 BOSTON -- In a perfect world, the Indians would let Cody Anderson remain with Triple-A Columbus to sort through his struggles on the mound. With a doubleheader looming on Monday, Cleveland's current circumstances just did not align with the ideal scenario. Prior to Saturday's game against the Red Sox, Indians manager Terry Francona announced that Anderson would be promoted from Triple-A Columbus to start the second game in Monday's twin bill against the White Sox. Rookie righty Mike Clevinger, who recently replaced Anderson in the rotation, will the take ball in the first game. Anderson will make the start as the Tribe's 26th man on the roster, and he will return to Columbus after the game. "Cody will start Game 2 and then go back," Francona said. "It's a little peculiar -- a guy that just got sent down -- but I also think it can be helpful. One, if he pitches good, it can help us win.... Hopefully it'll help us win and it'll be good for him." Anderson was optioned to Triple-A Columbus on Tuesday, following a rough start against the Reds on Monday. In that performance, the big righty gave up six runs on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings of a no-decision. On the season, Anderson is 0-3 with a 7.99 ERA, allowing 29 runs on 51 hits (including 10 home runs) in 32 2/3 innings. It has been a drastic contrast to last season, when Anderson went 7-3 with a 3.05 ERA in 15 starts as a rookie for Cleveland. That showing, combined with a great offseason and solid Spring Training, helped Anderson earn the No. 4 job in the rotation to start this season. Unfortunately for the Tribe, Anderson allowed five or more runs in four of his six starts and lasted fewer than five innings in three of his starts. "We've all kind of tried to figure that out," said Francona, when asked what was behind Anderson's struggles. "A lot of times, it's not just one thing. It's probably some inconsistencies in a number of areas. I think the good news is he's a really hard worker and his stuff is good. We've just got to let him get straightened out, and he will." Cleveland's only other alternatives from the 40-man roster were lefties TJ House, Ryan Merritt and Shawn Morimando. House, who had stints with the Indians in each of the past two years, has a 5.45 ERA with nearly as many walks (24) as strikeouts (26) at Triple-A this year. In his most recent outing, House was ejected after only 2 2/3 innings. The lefty has given up 10 earned runs in his past 13 innings (four games). Merritt has a 2.94 ERA in 52 innings at Triple-A, while Morimando has gone 7-0 with a 1.69 ERA in 48 innings for Double- A Akron. Cleveland decided to stick with Anderson for the spot start. "It can maybe really jump-start him," Francona said, "and if it doesn't go well, he can start his progression [in the Minors]." Salazar aims to cool off Red Sox's hot bats By Deesha Thosar / MLB.com May 21st, 2016 The red-hot Jackie Bradley Jr. aims to extend his hitting streak to 27 games, only eight games away from tying Dom DiMaggio for the longest streak in franchise history, as the Red Sox look to claim their series against the Indians on Sunday afternoon at Fenway Park. Bradley is the face of the Red Sox's recent offensive surge, but Indians right-hander Danny Salazar, who is second only to Chris Sale in the American League with a 1.80 ERA, knows Boston's entire lineup is a difficult one to take on. "They are really aggressive right now," Salazar said about the Sox. "They can hit the breaking pitch. I know it is going to be a challenge." Red Sox starter Rick Porcello (6-2, 3.51 ERA) hopes to rebound from an 8-4 loss to Kansas City on Tuesday. He went five innings, allowing five runs and eight hits on three strikeouts, a slight difference from his overall successful performance this season. "I felt good in my last start," Porcello said. "Just a couple mistakes, didn't execute some pitches that I needed to execute. But definitely looking forward to getting back out there." Porcello's track record against the Indians could bode well for Sunday. The 27-year-old has allowed two or fewer earned runs in each of his last seven starts against Cleveland, going 4-1 with a 1.91 ERA over that stretch. In 21 total starts against the Indians, Porcello has held them to three or fewer earned runs on 18 different occasions. Salazar (4-2, 1.80 ERA) is making his ninth start this season. The righty held the Reds to one run on five hits with one walk and eight strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings of work on Tuesday. Three things to know about this game Porcello enjoys pitching at Fenway, as he hasn't lost a single game at Fenway Park this season. The righty has allowed six fewer hits and three fewer runs on home turf than on the road. Porcello owns a home ERA of "I always love pitching here. It's always nice to have the home-field advantage, so to speak, and have the crowd behind you. It's definitely fun pitching at Fenway Park," Porcello said. Expect catcher Yan Gomes to be back behind the plate for Sunday's finale against the Red Sox. Gomes is riding a six-game hitting streak, in which he has three home runs, a pair of doubles and a OPS. Salazar has a 1.90 ERA when working with Gomes this season. The Red Sox are 18-8 in their last 26 games and 10-2 in their last 12 games at Fenway Park.

Covering the Bases: Game 40 by Jordan Bastian FIRST: Joe Kelly didn t give the Indians many chances on Saturday evening. The Boston right-hander had been on the disabled list for the past month with a right shoulder issue, which appeared to be just fine against Cleveland. Kelly held the Tribe to an 0-for-21 showing before Juan Uribe ended the no-hit bid, and the pitcher s day, with a no-doubt double in the seventh. Beyond that hit, the Indians only real chance at breaking through came in the fifth inning. Carlos Santana and Marlon Byrd drew back-to-back one-out walks, and Lonnie Chisenhall later worked a free pass to load the bases with two away. That set things up for Chris Gimenez, batting ninth in this one. One thing to know about Gimenez is that he has been victimized by high fastballs over the course of his career. With the exception of an upand-in heater in the strike zone, the catcher has clearly had troubles with elevated fastballs. Kelly would eventually get to that approach, but the righty first tried to entice Gimenez to chase. He fired a first-pitch slider way outside for ball one. Kelly then came back with a 97-mph heater into the dirt. From there, Kelly worked up. He threw me a breaking ball down and away ball one, Gimenez said. I thought he was trying to overthrow a little bit and I got to a 2-0 count. I was sitting dead-red fastball middle away. The third pitch was a 96-mph fastball over the middle, but high in the zone, and Gimenez fouled if off for strike one. Kelly came back with another fastball (this one at 97 mph) and went high and outside. The catcher fouled it off again, pulling the count even, 2-2. I put two really good swings on those fastballs, Gimenez said. It just didn t work out. Gimenez took a couple really good swings, Indians manager Terry Francona agreed. For the final pitch, Kelly came back with an 89-mph slider, which he sent up and in. As Gimenez watched the pitch spinning towards the strike zone, he weighed his options. It s a borderline pitch, Gimenez said. If I take it, it gets called a strike. If I swing, I can t do much with it. I just tried to put the best swing I could on it. Gimenez chopped the pitch to the left of the mound and Kelly made a great play to snag the ball. The pitcher then fired it to catcher Ryan Hanigan, who got his foot on the plate just ahead of Carlos Santana scoring. Today was one of those days when not much went our way, Gimenez said. Especially on offense. Kelly was good today. He had his curveball working early. SECOND: The Red Sox carried a four-run lead into the seventh inning. It was a solid advantage in light of how Kelly was pitching, but it was hardly a hole too deep to overcome for the Tribe. On Friday, the Indians were down 2-0 early and won 4-2. On Wednesday, Cleveland was down 6-4 and came back to win 8-7 against the Reds. Cincinnati had a 4-0 lead on Monday and then watched the Tribe pull off a 15-6 win. Those comebacks have fueled confidence among Cleveland s hitters. But, a mistake by Uribe in the seventh turned a 4-0 hole into a 9-0 cavern. With one out and the bases loaded, Joba Chamberlain induced a grounder off the bat of Christian Vazquez. Uribe scooped up the ball, but hesitated after initially take a step towards third base. Had he kept going, he may have been able to step on the bag to start a potential inningending double play. It s bases loaded and we get a doubleplay ball, Francona said. He ends up going home and it turned into [a situation where] we just couldn t stop it after that. It s unfortunate. Uribe tossed the baseball home and Gimenez stepped on the plate for the inning s second out. Then, Chamberlain issued a bases-loaded walk and allowed a grand slam. What s funny is Uribe had a similar play earlier in the game and tried to turn two when turning two wasn t necessary. With the bags full and two outs in the third, Uribe fielded a grorunder from Hanigan, stepped on third and then flipped it to Gimenez at the plate as David Ortiz jogged home. He threw to me and is yelling at me to tag him, Gimenez said with a laugh. I m like, We play three outs in this league. I just walked up to Papi and tagged him and said, You re out. He said, What are you doing?' Yeah, I thought there was one out, said Uribe, shaking his head. The veteran didn t make any excuses after the loss, either. I was thinking of going to third base, and I moved a little bit over there, Uirbe said. I talked to a couple guys and they told me I could ve [tried for a double play]. This is my fault. It s my fault. I could go to third base and go to first. When I saw I was a little bit late, I wanted to make one out, so I went to home plate. This is my fault. THIRD: Trevor Bauer was hung with a loss in this one, but he didn t pitch as poorly as his line might suggest. The righty went five innings, in which he was charged with four runs on eight hits. He walked one and struck out none. It s the first time in Bauer s career as a starter that he ended an outing with no punchouts (with at least one inning logged). I threw the ball really well, Bauer said. They blooped a lot of balls in. They didn t hit them hard. It was one of those days. Three of the runs allowed by Bauer came in the third, when he gave up five straight hits. One of those a two-run single by Hanley Ramirez nicked off Jason Kipnis glove and dropped into shallow right field. What did Hanley s go, a foot on the outfield grass? Bauer said. Two runs or whatever happened on that. It s an unfair game. Francona added: Early on, they were squaring some balls up. We got the bullpen up early I think in the third inning and he found a way to kind of wiggle out of it. To his credit, he kind of reeled it in and stayed out there until he started the sixth. HOME: Let s wrap up today with another episode of Francisco Lindor Theater. In the sixth inning, Blake Swihart lofted a pitch down the left-field line. Lindor tracked it down on a sprint between Uribe and left fielder Marlon Byrd. Per Statcast, the shortstop hit a top speed of 17.8 mph and traveled 101 feet to make the catch with a 97.1-percent route efficiency. One game earlier, Lindor made a running, over-the-shoulder catch in center field between Rajai Davis and Kipnis. After the game, we talked to him about his preparation and communication for those types of plays.

I usually tell my center fielder and my left fielder every time, every day, I m going until you call me off,' Lindor said. That s kind of like letting you know that I m going. I ll be there. If I can get to it, I ll be there. But, as soon as you call me off, that s your territory. I m not going to invade it. Red Sox 9, Indians 1: Joe Kelly shuts down Tribe, as 5-game winning streak snapped by Associated Press - The Chronicle-Telegram BOSTON The Cleveland Indians were already having enough trouble against Joe Kelly without the plays the Boston Red Sox were making to keep his no-hitter going. Kelly pitched no-hit ball for 6 innings, Boston s fielders made four solid plays and the Red Sox beat the Indians 9-1 on Saturday. Jason Kipnis was robbed twice on grounders, once each by second baseman Dustin Pedroia and first baseman Hanley Ramirez. Kelly added to it himself, backhanding a grounder and firing home for an inning-ending force, and center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. made a diving catch. Juan Uribe finally broke up the bid with a double to the right-center gap in the seventh. Carlos Santana homered for the Indians, who had won a season-best five in a row. Squared up a few balls, but they made plays defensively, Indians manager Terry Francona said. Pedroia made a couple at second, Bradley in center, and we were never really able to get anything going. Trevor Bauer (3-2) gave up four runs in five-plus innings. I threw the ball really well, he said. They looped a lot of balls in, they didn t hit them hard and it was one of those days. Mookie Betts had a grand slam and a solo homer, and Bradley extended his majors-best hitting streak to 26 games with an infield single. Dom DiMaggio owns the Red Sox record with a 34-game string in Kelly (2-0) came off the 15-day disabled list earlier in the day after being out with a right shoulder impingement since April 20. Manager John Farrell immediately pulled him at 104 pitches. Kelly left to a long, loud ovation. Both of Betts homers went into the first row of Green Monster seats. His slam made it 9-0 in the seventh, and the solo shot came in the fourth. Boston has homered in a club-record 21 straight games. Relying mostly on fastballs in the mid-to-upper 90s mph with an occasional curveball and slider, Kelly struck out seven and walked three. Junichi Tazawa went 1 scoreless innings and Heath Hembree got the final three outs in the combined two-hitter. Bradley made a diving catch of Marlon Byrd s line drive a pitch before Uribe s hit. Bradley reached after second baseman Kipnis made a diving stab on his grounder up the middle and threw high to first, taking Santana off the bag. The Red Sox jumped ahead 3-0 in the third. Xander Bogaerts had an RBI single before Ramirez s two-run single. Trainer s room Indians: Francona said RHP Cody Anderson will be recalled from Triple-A Columbus and start the second game of a doubleheader Monday against the White Sox. Red Sox: RHP Carson Smith (right elbow soreness) is expected to be examined by Mets medical director Dr. David Altchek. Utility player Brock Holt (seven-day concussion DL) is planning to see Dr. Michael Collins in Pittsburgh on Tuesday. LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (right knee since spring training) is now wearing a brace and scheduled for a rehab start Tuesday for Triple-A Pawtucket. C Ryan Hanigan left with a bruised left hand after getting hit by a pitch. X-rays were negative. Scoreless string over The Indians hadn t scored in 14 innings before Santana s homer with two outs in the ninth. Up next Indians: RHP Danny Salazar (4-2, 1.80 ERA) is set for the series finale today. He gave up one run in 7 innings in his last start, a win over Cincinnati. Red Sox: RHP Rick Porcello (6-2, 3.51) is coming off his worst start of the season when he gave up five runs in five innings in a loss at Kansas City. Cleveland Indians' Juan Uribe ends no-hitter, but gets burned at hot corner against Boston By Paul Hoynes, cleveland.com BOSTON On a day when the Indians five-game winning streak ended, Juan Uribe ruined a no-hitter and made a mistake at third base that put the Boston Red Sox in pile-on mode. Uribe is 38. He's done a lot of things in baseball. But that is no safeguard from the game's extremes. In the seventh inning, with Boston leading the Indians, 4-0, behind the no-hit pitching of Joe Kelly, Uribe came to the plate with two out. He had just seen Marlon Byrd robbed of a hit on a diving catch by center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. "This guy (Kelly) was really good," Uribe said. As he went to the plate, Uribe made up his mind that if Kelly's first pitch looked hittable, he was swinging. Uribe lives by that credo anyway. He likes to swing early and hard. Kelly threw a first-pitch fastball and Uribe lined it into the gap in right center for a double. Nothing came of it as Lonnie Chisenhall struck out behind him, but at least the Indians weren't looking down the barrel of being no-hit for the 12th time in franchise history and the first time since Ervin Santana's no-no on July 27, 2011 at Progressive Field. "It was a fastball away," said Uribe, hitting.218 (22-for-101) with one homer and six RBI. "This guy had good pitches. His fastball was moving all over. I didn't want to see strike. I wanted to see the ball and hit the ball." Uribe ruins no-hit bid, but Boston buries Tribe

In the seventh, with the game still within reach, the Red Sox loaded the bases with one out against Kyle Crockett. Joba Chamberlain relieved and catcher Ryan Hanigan sent a grounder to Uribe at third. Uribe initially started to go to run to third to make the force and throw to first for the double play. But he felt he was too far from the bag and threw home to catcher Chris Gimenez. "I was thinking of going to third base and I moved a little bit over there," said Uribe. "I talked to a couple of guys and they told me I could've (tried for the double play). This is my fault. It's my fault. "When I saw I was a little bit late, I wanted to make one out, so I went to home plate. This is my fault." Terry Francona on missed double play Third baseman Juan Uribe had a chance to turn a double play in the seventh inning Saturday against Boston, but it didn't get turned. From there, Boston's four-run quickly expanded. Chamberlain walked Blake Swihart to force home a run and gave up a grand slam to Mookie Betts. Boston's 4-0 lead sprouted to 9-0. "I think his initial thought was that he was going to go to third, and then he realized he might not have time," said manager Terry Francona. "It's happening fast for those game I get it but that would have been huge. That's exactly what we needed right there." Something similar happened in the third inning. Boston had just scored three runs against Trevor Bauer on five straight hits. The bases were loaded with David Ortiz on third, Hanley Ramirez on second and Jackie Bradley Jr. on first. Hanigan, with two out, sent a grounder to Uribe. This time he stepped on third and threw home to Gimenez. "He was screaming at me to tag him," said Gimenez. "I'm like, 'we play three outs in this league.' I just walked up to Papi and tagged him and said you're out. He said what are you doing?" Cleveland Plain Dealer LOADED: Cleveland Indians ruin Joe Kelly's no-hitter, but Boston Red Sox prevail, 9-1 By Paul Hoynes, cleveland.com BOSTON -- Juan Uribe ended Joe Kelly's no-hitter, but the Indians still have no clue how to end Kelly's brief, but impressive dominance over them. Kelly, who had not pitched in a big-league game since April 19 because of a sore right shoulder, held the Indians hitless for 7 1/3 innings Saturday as Boston cruised to a 9-1 victory at Fenway Park. The Tribe's five-game winning streak ended quietly as Kelly, Junichi Tazawa and Heath Hembree combined on a two-hitter. In the five-game winning, the Indians had 64 hits. Uribe lined a first-pitch double into the gap in right center with two out in the seventh to end Kelly's no-hit bid. Boston pitchers have thrown 18 no-hitters in club history with Jon Lester's no-no against against Kansas City on May 19, 2008 being the most recent. Terry Francona was Boston's manager at the time. "It was a fastball away," said Uribe about his double. "Today this guy was good. His fastball was moving all over. I went up there looking for the first pitch. That's what I like." Kelly (2-0, 5.28) was removed after Uribe's double. He struck out seven and walked three. In three starts against the Indians, Kelly is 2-0 with a 0.50 ERA. He's allowed one run in 18 innings, while walking seven and striking out 14. "He had everything (working)," said Francona when asked about Kelly. "He's got a really good arm as you can see. He started getting comfortable in the windup and starting throwing breaking balls even when he was behind and that made him tougher." Terry Francona on Boston starter Joe Kelly Boston's Joe Kelly took a no-hitter into the seventh inning Saturday against the Indians. After allowing a double to Juan Uribe, Kelly was removed from the game. He threw 7 1/3 scoreless innings for the win. Mookie Betts shared star billing with Kelly. He had three hits, including two homers, and drove in five runs. Betts second homer was a grand slam off Joba Chamberlain in the seventh. The Indians only run came on Carlos Santana's two-out homer in the ninth. It was his eighth of the season. Before that the Indians best chance to score came in the fifth when Kelly walked the bases loaded. After striking out Mike Napoli to start the inning, Santana and Marlon Byrd drew consecutive walks. Santana walked on a 3-1 pitch, Byrd on a 3-2 pitch. Kelly struck out Uribe, but walked Lonnie Chisenhall to load the bases with two out. Chris Gimenez worked the count to 2-2 before sending a bouncer back to the mound. Kelly came off the mound, made a backhand stop and threw home where Ryan Hanigan forced Santana on a close play to end the inning. Boston settled things early against Trevor Bauer (3-2, 4.31). They used five straight hits with one out in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead. Betts started the rally with a double. Dustin Pedroia singled to left as Betts stopped at third. A single to center by Xander Bogaerts made it 1-0. David Ortiz added a single to right to load the bases. Hanley Ramirez followed with a bloop single to right just over the outstretched glove of Jason Kipnis at second base. Pedroia and Bogaerts scored for a 3-0 lead. "I threw the ball really well," said Bauer. "They blooped a lot of balls in. They didn't hit them hard. It was one of those days." Bauer pointed to Ramirez's two-run single as example of the bloop hits that hurt him. "What did Hanley's go, a foot on the outfield grass?" said Bauer. "Two runs score on that. It's an unfair game."

In the fourth, Betts stretched the lead to 4-0 with a homer that just made it over The Monster in left. Betts has nine homers on the season. The pitches Bauer threw 98 pitches, 54 for strikes. Kelly threw 104 pitches, 60 for strikes. The last time the Indians had a starter go five or more innings without a strikeout was April 4, 2013 when Brett Myers gave seven runs, including four homers, in five innings. Bauer allowed four runs on eight hits in five innings. He walked two. The streak Jackie Bradley Jr. extended his MLB-high hitting streak to 26 games with a single to start the sixth. Kipnis made a nice diving stop, but his high throw pulled Santana off first base. The play was ruled a hit, but the Indians challenged the safe call at first. After a 42 second review, the call on the field stood. Bauer was booed when he intentionally walked Bradley in the second inning with two out and Ortiz on second. He was booed again when he issued an unintentional intentional walk to Bradley in the third. Kyle Crockett intentionally walked Bradley in the seventh and the Fenway Faithful screamed again. They booed even louder when Chamberlain, the former Yankee, relieved Crockett. Thanks for coming The Indians and Red Sox drew a sellout crowd of 37,254 fans to Fenway Park on Saturday. First pitch was at 4:06 with a temperature of 73 degrees. What's next? RHP Danny Salazar (4-2, 1.80) will face Boston right-hander Rick Porcello (6-2, 3.51) on Sunday at 1:35 p.m. SportsTime Ohio, WTAM/1100 and WMMS/FM will carry the game. Salazar is 2-0 in his last three starts, allowing two earned runs in 20 innings He's 2-0 with 1.46 ERA against Boston. Bradley is 2-for-3 (.667) against him. Porcello, after winning his first five starts, has lost two of his last three. He's 9-4 with a 3.36 ERA against the Indians. Santana is hitting.308 (12-for-39) with three homers against him. Cleveland Plain Dealer LOADED: Cleveland Indians go with Cody Anderson in doubleheader start Monday against White Sox By Paul Hoynes, cleveland.com BOSTON ON Saturday manager Terry Francona made official what appeared to be a done deal for a while now. Cody Anderson, the Indians struggling right-hander, will start the second game of Monday's doubleheader against the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field. It means in the first two games of an early-season showdown between the top two teams in the AL Central, the Indians will be starting rookie Mike Clevinger in the first game and Anderson, who has allowed 10 homers in 32 2/3 innings, in the second. Anderson made a great impression last year when he arrived unheralded from Class AAA Columbus and went 7-3 with a 3.05 ERA in 15 starts. This spring he impressed Francona and the coaching staff so much that he opened the year as the No.4 starter ahead of undefeated Josh Tomlin and Trevor Bauer, who opened the year in the pen. The season has not started as anticipated for Anderson. He's 0-3 with a 7.99 ERA and has already been optioned to Columbus twice. After being optioned Tuesday when Lonnie Chisenhall came off the bereavement list, Anderson can make Monday's start because teams are allowed to add a 26th player for doubleheaders. Otherwise he wouldn't be allowed to return to the big leagues until he's spent 10 days in the minors. Anderson has been able to work on some issues with his delivery in a couple of bullpen sessions at Columbus. But pitching coach Mickey Callaway said Friday that Anderson's confidence has to improve as well. "Cody is going to start Game 2 and then go back to Columbus," said Francona. "I know it's a little peculiar for a guy who just got sent down. I also think it can be helpful for him if he pitches well. "It's a not a bad option when you start digging into doubleheaders. Hopefully, it helps us win and it's good for him." Cody Anderson gets second chance in a hurry When a pitcher is struggling the traditional course of action for a team is to send him to the minors and let him work on his craft over several starts against lesser opposition. In Anderson's two trips to Columbus, he's made one start before being brought back to the big leagues. "I think the better way to look at it is that this could really jump start him," said Francona. Regarding Anderson's problems, Francona said, "We've all been trying to figure this out. His stuff has been so good, but early in the season I thought he was up with some pitches...a lot of times it's just not one thing, but some inconsistencies in a number of areas. "The good news is he's a hard worker and his stuff is good. We just have to let him get straightened out and he will." Cleveland Plain Dealer LOADED:

Can Josh Tomlin pitch and play third for Cleveland Indians? Hey, Hoynsie By Paul Hoynes, cleveland.com on May 21, 2016 at 12:19 PM, updated May 21, 2016 at 12:20 PM BOSTON Do you have a question that you'd like to have answered in Hey, Hoynsie? Submit it here or Tweet him Hey, Hoynsie: Any chance the Tribe will use Josh Tomlin as an everyday third baseman? Marcus Monte, Bay Village. Hey, Marcus: I think they like him right where he's at on the mound with a 6-0 record. Hey, Hoynsie: What are the odds of Josh (All-I-Do-Is-Win) Tomlin making the All-Star team? Adam Claypool, Las Vegas. Hey, Adam: I think they get better everytime he takes the mound. As an added incentive, AL manager Ned Yost could always use him as a pinch-hitter. Hey, Hoynsie: I do not attempt to be negative, however, manager Terry Francona and management are not being totally truthful with the fans. The outfield problems are partly due to Michael Brantley being injured, but rookie Tyler Naquin was sent down so they can add another year of control on him. If Michael Martinez was that necessary why was he not brought up earlier? Bob Earnest. Hey, Bob: I'm not saying the idea of limiting Naquin's big league service time didn't play a role in his recent demotion, but I think it was a small role. If it would have been a larger question why was he on the big league roster on opening day? Right now, with Brantley injured, utility man Jose Ramirez has become a starter in left field or third base. The Indians need another utility guy to replace him and Martinez is a good fit. Hey, Hoynsie: Why not bring Ross Detwiler back to the Indians instead of staying with Kyle Crockett He's a better left-hander with more versatility. He was released after finally pitching well following some horrendous weather conditions. Now he's starting at Class AAA Columbus. It's a very unstable approach. Wally Morton. Hey, Wally: Detwiler made the club out of spring training as a reliever, but manager Terry Francona has said he was reluctant to use him in that role. I think he feels more comfortable with Crockett. Detwiler, as you pointed out, is starting at Class AAA Columbus. I think that's the role he prefers. I'm not sure if the Indians would want to move him back into the bullpen now. Hey, Hoynsie: Any news on what's happened with former Indians pitcher Justin Masterson? I miss seeing him in a Tribe uniform. Ryan Smith, Fort Wayne, Ind. Hey, Ryan: Masterson signed a minor league deal with the Pirates in April. To date, he has not pitched in any minor league games for the Pirates. He underwent surgery on his right shoulder in September after being released by Boston and is currently rehabbing and increasing his velocity. Hey, Hoynsie: In the first half of the 2014 season, Lonnie Chisenhall set the AL on fire with his hitting. Since then what are his numbers? Likewise 2014 was Corey Kluber's Cy Young season. What are his numbers since? Have AL pitchers and hitters figured out Chisenhall and Kluber? I know Terry Francona loves veterans, but if the trend continues with Chisenhall and Kluber how long do you stay with them? -- Sam, Poland Village. Hey, Sam: I'm sure you know what the numbers are on Kluber and Chisenhall. But there are other things to consider. The Indians signed Kluber to a five-year $38.5 million deal in The deal includes club options for 2020 and I don't think he's going anywhere unless the Indians make a trade and I don't think they'd want to if Kluber continues to pitch as he did Friday night against Boston. Chisenhall is on a one-year $2.75 million deal. He's had an erratic, injury-filled start to the year. He's also out of options. I'd say he's probably in a more precarious spot than Kluber, but he has been playing better of late. Hey, Hoynsie: Did adjusting the mechanics on Cody Anderson lead to his downfall or did the law of averages catch up with him as a young pitcher? Mike Rienhart, New Riegal. Hey, Mike The Indians changed his mechanics to help him throw harder toward the end of last year. According to pitching coach Mickey Callaway, Anderson altered those mechanics slightly to where the velocity is still there, but the ball is up in the strike zone. So now more adjustments have to be made. You're also seeing a young pitcher struggle after some initial success in the big leagues. It happens all the time. Hey, Hoynsie: How do I get over Atlanta beating the Indians in 1995? The only world championship won by an Atlanta team in baseball, football or basketball came at the expense of the Indians and that wretched umpiring crew. This is No.2 on the list of things that still irritate me. We need not mention No.1. How do I get over it? Rick Ellis, Cleveland. Hey, Rick: I would suggest strong drink or counseling. Perhaps both. Hey, Hoynsie: I know it's early, but what happens when Abraham Almonte returns from his 80-game suspension? I know praise for him was high last year for some reason (career stats in 508 AB:.244 average/.297 on base percentage/.378 slugging percentage), but can he really take someone's spot on this team (barring injury to anyone)? I can't see him being an upgrade to anyone already on the Indians or at Class AAA Columbus. Adam Zeitz, Charlottesville, Va. Hey, Adam: The Indians will play their 40th game on Saturday. That means Almonte will still have 40 games left to serve on his PED suspension. From the outside looking I think Almonte has already made the biggest impact he'll make on this year's Indians team by getting banned. When the suspension ends, the Indians could option him to the minors or add him to the big league club. Hey, Hoynsie: Is there any update on Carlos Carrasco's recovery from his hamstring injury? Dennis Michael, Los Angeles. Hey, Dennis: Things are progressing. Carrasco threw a simulated game Thursday at Class A Lake County. He's scheduled to throw another simulated game on Monday and a rehab assignment could follow.

The initial diagnosis was that he'd miss four to six weeks after straining his left hamstring covering first base on April 24 in Detroit. That hasn't changed. Cleveland Indians have Terry Talkin' Josh Tomlin, Steve Dunning and Mike Clevinger -- Terry Pluto By Terry Pluto, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Since he came back from shoulder surgery in August of 2015, Josh Tomlin has started 17 games for the Cleveland Indians. The Indians have won 15 of his 17 starts. Tomlin's record is 13-2 with a 3.21 ERA in that span. He has walked as in 13 walks in 17 starts. He is 6-0 this season, the first Tribe pitcher to open a season with a 6-0 record since Cliff Lee did it in Lee was 22-3 with a 2.54 ERA that season, winning the Cy Young Award. The man called "The Little Cowboy" by former Tribe manager Manny Acta is one of the fun stories of 2016 for the Tribe. He signed with the Tribe for a $20,000 bonus in He was the 581st player picked in that draft. Tomlin's two hits against the Reds raised his Major League batting average to he's 6-for-10. Manager Terry Francona joked about Tomlin wanting to pinch hit, but maybe that's not the worst idea. At Angelina Junior College, Tomlin played the infield when he didn't pitch... he batted.351. ABOUT STEVE DUNNING On Thursday night, Tomlin became the first Tribe pitcher to have two hits in a game since... Steve Dunning? Dunning had two hits in a game in I'm old enough to remember Steve Dunning. I know I saw him pitch, although that's all I remember. Dunning did something I doubt we'll ever see again. He went straight from pitching at Stanford to the Majors. The Indians made him the No. 2 pick in the 1970 draft. They gave him a $60,000 signing bonus -- huge money at the time when the big league minimum salary was $12,000. His nickname was "Stunning Steve Dunning," and he was the 1970 Sporting News Pitcher of the Year. Dunning won his first start, giving up two runs in five innings to the Milwaukee Brewers. He was 4-9 with a 4.96 ERA as a 21-year-old rookie. His fastball was in the middle 90s mph, but he never developed another pitch to go with it. Today, he'd begin his career in the minors and they'd make sure he had at least one other good pitch before promoting him. Or they'd put him in the bullpen, as the Tribe did with Paul Shuey after making him the No. 2 pick (same as Dunning) in the 1992 draft. Dunning had a one-hitter against Washington in 1971 on opening day. He hit a grand slam off pitcher Diego Segui. He was with a 4.31 ERA for the Tribe and was traded to Washington for Dick Bosman in He last pitched in the big leagues at the age of 28, his final record was with a 4.56 ERA. Dunning went back to law school and earned a degree from Loyola Marymount. He is a real estate and business transactions attorney in Aliso Viejo, Calif. He is a partner in the firm of Dunning, McConnell and Barwick. ABOUT MIKE CLEVINGER I remember when the Indians traded for Mike Clevinger. It was late in the 2014 season -- August 7, 2014 to be exact. They sent a struggling Vinnie Pestano to the Angels for Clevinger. At that time, Clevinger was 1-3 with a 5.37 ERA for Class A Island Empire. He was coming off Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery. Before the May 21, 2012 operation, Clevinger had pitched only 13 pro games over two seasons. It looked like one of those throw-away deals where you never hear the name of the alleged prospect again. It also was an indication of how Pestano's value had fallen. From , Pestano was one of the best set-up men in the American League. He had a career 5-8 record and 2.90 ERA in that span. But in 2014, Pestano was having arm problems. He spent most of that season in the minors. In spring training, Clevinger told me his fastball was in "in the high 80s" mph when the Indians traded for him. He was still building up arm strength after surgery. "I had pitched the night before," he said. "I was working in the weight room. The pitching coach came in and said, 'Put those weights down right now! We need to talk to you.' I thought I must have done something wrong." Instead, he was told he was traded to Cleveland. "It was a shock," he said. He found it hard to believe anyone would trade for him at that point. He wasn't throwing well. He had major elbow surgery on his record. But the Indians thought they could help Clevinger with his pitching mechanics and arm strength. He was throwing mph when he was a fourth-round pick in 2011 by the Angeles. In 2015, the 6-foot-4, 210-pound right-hander was 9-8 with a 2.73 ERA at Class AA Akron. He threw 15 1/3 scoreless innings in the Class AAA playoffs for Columbus.
