Chicago right fielder Adam Eaton crushed his first career grand slam in the top of the ninth off Cleveland closer Cody Allen as the White Sox used a five-run rally to erase a two-run deficit. With the win, the South Siders snapped a seven-game losing streak to the American League Centralleading Tribe. Over the previous seven games between the two clubs, Chicago didn't score more than three runs. "A good team win, really a boxing match from the beginning," Eaton said. "It was really intriguing how they came out and scored a couple. We had our two-run homer to come back and vice versa in the third and the fourth. It was a long game, but definitely an intriguing game where I'm glad we got the last punch." Allen entered in the ninth to try to extend the Indians' divisional dominance. After getting the first batter out, Allen allowed the next five batters to reach, capped by an RBI single from Dioner Navarro and the

grand slam by Eaton as Cleveland fell to vs. AL Central teams. Per Statcast, Eaton's jack to right traveled a projected 390 feet from home plate with an exit velocity of 100 mph. "That's baseball," Allen said. "You've got to make pitches when you have to. Had a nice opportunity right there to kind of limit what was going on. Didn't actually think that was a bad pitch to Eaton, he just put a good swing on it. That guy's a good player. That's kind of how the inning went." Neither starter factored into the decision. Indians right-hander Carlos Carrasco surrendered a pair of tworun leads, but was able to fight through 6 2/3 innings. He allowed five runs (four earned) on eight hits, while punching out 11 batters with no walks. It marked his ninth career double-digit strikeout game. Meanwhile, White Sox righty Anthony Ranaudo went just four innings, allowing five runs on eight hits. He surrendered home runs to Lonnie Chisenhall and Carlos Santana. Per Statcast, Santana's solo shot to right in the third traveled a projected 426 feet. MOMENTS THAT MATTERED Guyer on fire: Indians left fielder Brandon Guyer got a rare start against a right-hander. Guyer made the most of it, going 3-for-5, including a go-ahead two-run single in the fifth that broke a 5-5 deadlock. Entering Wednesday, Guyer boasted a.358 batting average against lefties, but was hitting just.204 against righties. This homestand, Guyer is 8-for-17 with seven RBIs. More > "It's always fun, whether it's a righty or lefty, to get out there on the field," Guyer said. "I love playing with these guys. It's a fun group of guys. It stinks we lost, though. That's all I can think about right now. But, we'll come back tomorrow and we'll be good." Swing and a drive: Tim Anderson didn't let a 2-0 Cleveland lead last long. After J.B. Shuck singled off Carrasco to open the third, Anderson launched a high drive down the left-field line that clanked well up off the foul pole. Anderson's seventh home run also extended his career-high hitting streak to 10, traveling 394 feet at an exit velocity of 108 mph, according to Statcast. "Just looking for a pitch I could handle," said Anderson, who also drew a key walk during the five-run rally in the ninth. "I felt like he was going to come in and he did, and I was able to get the barrel to it." Big Lon: Chisenhall put the Indians on the board first by lifting a 1-1 offering from Ranaudo for a two-run shot to right. Per Statcast, the ball traveled an estimated 384 feet with an exit velocity of 98 mph. It was Chisenhall's seventh home run of the season, but his first since July 8. In fact, it had been 28 games (20 starts) since Chisenhall went yard. Chisenhall added an RBI single in the third. Ranaudo's return: In his first start for the White Sox on July 27 at Wrigley Field, Ranaudo pitched 5 1/3 hitless innings before giving up a home run to Kris Bryant, but he was hit quite a bit harder Wednesday in his return to the rotation. Ranaudo, who will start as long as Miguel Gonzalez is on the disabled list, struck out two and walked one over 88 pitches. "It came down to executing pitches," Ranaudo said. "The guys I did get ahead of, I didn't put away. Those were some costly hits that led to some runs. So I just think I have to execute a little more. I threw some strikes, but the quality of strikes has to be better. You saw that reflected in the hard contact tonight." QUOTABLE "It's one game. Obviously, it was a tough one, but it's one ballgame. We'll show up tomorrow ready to play." -- Allen, on the disappointment after blowing a two-run lead "It was great. Great momentum. Very fun to play in that kind of game, especially when Eaton hit the grand slam. It was a big moment for us." -- Anderson, on the win

UPON FURTHER REVIEW In the fourth, Tribe catcher Roberto Perez rolled a hopper to second. The White Sox began what should have been a routine double play. However, the throw to second for the first out pulled Anderson off the bag. Chicago was initially credited with a double play, but Cleveland manager Terry Francona elected to challenge the call. After a 34-second review, the call was overturned and Guyer was ruled safe at second. Guyer later came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Jason Kipnis, tying the game at 5. The Indians lost their challenge in the top of the fifth, when Francona challenged a safe call at second on Eaton's double. The call stood after a review of one minute and eight seconds. WHAT'S NEXT White Sox: Carlos Rodon looks for his second straight victory, as the White Sox complete a nine-game road trip Thursday night at 6:10 p.m. CT at Progressive Field. Rodon is 3-0 with a 1.75 ERA lifetime against the Indians. Indians: Danny Salazar is slated to start for the Indians in the series finale at 7:10 p.m. ET. The righthander has been on the disabled list since Aug. 2 with right elbow inflammation. Salazar has faced the White Sox twice this season and has gone 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA, allowing three earned runs in 12 innings. Stunner slam: Eaton caps Sox thrilling comeback By Scott Merkin / MLB.com August 17th, 2016 CLEVELAND -- Highlights of the White Sox improbable but exciting 10-7 comeback victory over the Indians on Wednesday night at Progressive Field will prominently feature Adam Eaton's first career grand slam capping off a five-run ninth against Cleveland closer Cody Allen. Eaton connected on an 0-2 offering, while adding a degree of difficulty by blowing a bubble with his gum upon contact, putting an exclamation point on the end of a seven-game White Sox losing streak against the American League Central leaders. But Eaton's heroics would have never been possible if not for the crucial previous moments. "I've felt one of those before," said White Sox manager Robin Ventura of the gut-punch from losing a ninth-inning lead. "For us, we realize what it feels like but we realize it can happen, too." This final frame started innocently enough, with Justin Morneau striking out on three pitches. Todd Frazier, who struck out six times in the first two games of this series, fell behind 1-2 but then beat out an infield single to shortstop Francisco Lindor. The important part of that play was Lindor trying to nail Frazier at first, throwing wildly and sending Frazier to second on an error, meaning J.B. Shuck's ensuing infield hit up the middle would have been a fielder's-choice grounder for the second out. Tim Anderson drew a walk to load the bases, laying off a 3-2 fastball, and Dioner Navarro blooped a single off third baseman Jose Ramirez's glove to cut the lead to one. Even with the game now truly on the line, there wasn't much hard contact off Allen. No hard contact, that is, until Eaton connected on a knuckle curve and dropped the Indians to 62-1 when leading after eight innings. "I just knew the pitch I took before that, I was going to get the same pitch," said Eaton, who took a firstpitch knuckle curve, swung and missed badly on the second offering and launched the third. "I was just going to try to make contact. That's usually when good things happen, to be honest with you, when you're not trying to do too much and you're just trying to make contact. I'm happy with the result and happy with the win."

Wednesday's rally marked the first time the White Sox scored five runs in the ninth to win a game since April 25, 2014, at home against the Rays. It also shows the fight of the White Sox and their ability to have something bubble up late even down 11 1/2 games in the standings. "Hopefully, we can get going in the right direction," Eaton said. "Time is limited, but we know what we can do in a month. We can win 15, 20 games in a month, month and a half if we really put our minds to it. "We still won tonight, which was nice. We've talked about losing games you shouldn't lose and winning games you may have stolen. It's nice to be able to steal one." AL Central woes hindering White Sox Eaton points to inconsistency as main culprit for team s struggles By Scott Merkin / MLB.com August 17th, 2016 CLEVELAND -- To win the American League Central, as would be the desired White Sox goal, a team has to win within the AL Central. And for the past four seasons, that accomplishment has eluded the South Siders. Since the start of the 2013 campaign, the White Sox have a mark against division opponents entering Wednesday. That record remains a dismal over the past two seasons, when the White Sox specifically were built to contend. Why has this team struggled so much in the AL Central? As the old saying goes, if the White Sox had clear-cut solutions, they would have fixed the problem. But right fielder Adam Eaton has one idea. "You've heard me say it a million times: Anybody can do it for a day or for a week or for a month. It's consistency," Eaton said. "You look at some of the greatest teams since I've been around, the Cardinals and the Giants. "They are consistent. They play good defense. They pitch the ball well. They win games they are supposed to win. There are a lot of games this year, I would say a dozen or so games, that we should have won where we left 15 guys on base, 12 guys on base, or defensively we weren't solid or our bullpen didn't close the door. You can point fingers at everybody, and just top to bottom, we have not been consistent. "We have not been as solid as we need to be. That's how good teams play. Look at the Royals the last two years: solid defense and their bullpen has been solid. They have had good pitching and scored enough runs, but they consistently did it day in and day out." The White Sox Central struggles are especially pronounced against the Royals and Indians, as the following records indicate: vs. Cleveland 2013: 2-17; 2014: 9-10; 2015: 10-9; 2016: 2-8 vs. Detroit 2013: 7-12; 2014: 9-10; 2015: 9-10; 2016: 5-8 vs. Kansas City 2013: 9-10; 2014: 6-13; 2015: 7-12; 2016: 3-9 vs. Minnesota 2013: 8-11; 2014: 9-10; 2015: 6-13; 2016: 9-3

"Even with Kansas City, we've had our shots," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. "We've had some leads. Those have been gut-punches. With [the Indians], they've just outplayed us. Any time you have that in your division it hurts, because you're going to play them so much and to gain ground is really tough if you're losing head to head." Eaton pointed that finger of inconsistency back at himself, but added the White Sox "are as talented as anybody in the league. "Talent can only get you so far," Eaton said. Extended inconsistency such as the above example usually leads to changes. Eaton had no guess at that possibility, but stressed winning as the focus for all involved. "I want to win," Eaton said. "I want to win now, tomorrow, this year and next year. I want to win every single day. So whatever needs to happen in order for that to happen, I'm on board, whatever it takes." Olympian skating through White Sox system Prospect Alvarez won silver medal for US short-track team in Sochi By Scott Merkin / MLB.com August 17th, 2016 Eddy the Jet is on the move again, and his timing is impeccable. As the Summer Olympic Games are conducted amid pomp and circumstance in Brazil, the baseball season has hit its dog days. Teams that have fallen out of contention search for positives where they can find them, and for the White Sox, one of the bright lights is an infielder who is flying through their system with Olympic speed. That's Eddy Alvarez, and moving fast is nothing new to him. He's a former Olympic speed skater. Alvarez was on the medal podium the last time the world's best gathered under the Olympic flame. He was a part of the United States' short-track speed-skating relay team, which earned a silver medal in the 2014 Sochi Games. Alvarez, a Cuban-American with roots in Miami, turned his full attention to baseball after Sochi. And on Wednesday, he was promoted from Double-A Birmingham to Triple-A Charlotte, only one rung from a call to the Major Leagues. Former Olympian Eddy Alvarez goes 5-for-5 Monday, promoted to Triple-A today. #WhiteSox 3:52 PM - 17 Aug 2016 Alvarez is a good bet to get to Chicago, too, probably not in September but at some point in Sort of sounds like a Disney movie, doesn't it? "He's making us look good,'' White Sox assistant general manager Buddy Bell said on Wednesday. "But he fooled us, too. He's better than any of us thought.'' Alvarez had played only one season of baseball in five years, but former White Sox pitcher Carlos Castillo, a family friend from Miami, got him a tryout with the Sox after the '14 Olympics. The White Sox needed Minor League depth, so they signed him after he impressed coach Mike Gellinger in a tryout, and he wound up batting.346 between Rookie ball and Class A Kannapolis. It wasn't a fluke. Alvarez has gone on to become one of the best stories in the Minor Leagues, hitting.292 with a.387 on-base percentage and an.803 OPS in 272 games while playing shortstop in the White Sox system.

"He works as hard as anybody,'' Bell said. "He's not in awe of anything he comes across in baseball, which you shouldn't be. And he's got a great mind for baseball. People forget he was pretty good when he stopped playing [to skate]. He's a hell of an athlete, a really good athlete. His feet are always under him.'' Alvarez, 26, combined skating with baseball growing up. His older brother, Nick, was drafted by the Dodgers out of Miami Gardens' St. Thomas University in Florida and spent seven years as a Minor League outfielder, reaching Triple-A. Eddy played seriously enough to have a scholarship offer to St. Thomas out of high school, but he chose to pursue his Olympic dream. Alvarez was already known as Eddy the Jet when he was an 11-year-old and he won the so-called triple crown -- national age titles in inline speed skating, long-track speed skating and short-track speed skating. After being unable to grab a spot on the U.S. team for the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver, Alvarez decided to take a year off from skating. He walked onto the baseball team at Salt Lake Community College and wound up as the starting shortstop, but after that 2011 season, he returned to skating. That was the only baseball Alvarez had played since graduating from Christopher Columbus High School. But he always planned to return once he got skating out of his system. "I had two dreams, and had the potential to make those dreams come true,'' Alvarez told MLB.com last March. "It was tough, but it really taught me work ethic, playing two sports. To get that medal was so satisfying. I want to encourage young athletes to accomplish their dreams.'' Alvarez underwent surgery to repair torn patellar tendons in both knees in 2012, which could have ended his Olympic dream. His baseball dreams seemed to be dimming early this season, but he struck back against Southern League pitchers, who dominated him in the spring. After hitting.145 in April, Alvarez was still below.200 as late as June 9. He's hit.321 since then, raising his average to.263. Alvarez was leading the Birmingham Barons with 62 RBIs, more directly attributed to a.300 batting average with runners in scoring position than his six home runs. The White Sox have been impressed with Alvarez's dedication and discipline since he arrived. He told MLB.com that the pace of baseball was "almost easy'' after Olympic workouts that were typically "six to eight hours per day, six days per week, 11 months of the year." Bell says it will be fun to watch Alvarez at the Triple-A level and then, from all of the indications he's given so far, the American League. He's going to play some second base at Charlotte as the White Sox weigh how he'd fit in an infield with Tim Anderson. Look for Alvarez in Major League camp next spring. "I really want to see how he stacks up against the most advanced players,'' Bell said. "He always seems to rise to the occasion, seems to figure it out.'' There's something else, too. "He's a winner,'' Bell said. A team can never have enough of those.

Salazar returns from DL to face White Sox By Shane Jackson / MLB.com August 17th, 2016 Indians right-hander Danny Salazar will return to the mound on Thursday as he squares off against lefthander Carlos Rodon of the White Sox in the final game of a three-game set at Progressive Field. Salazar (11-4, 3.38 ERA) has been on the disabled list due to right elbow inflammation since Aug. 2. He will be on an unspecified pitch count, and right-hander Mike Clevinger -- who filled Salazar's spot in the rotation while he was out -- will be available in the bullpen. Salazar allowed 10 runs across six combined frames over his last two starts before going on the DL. The Tribe hurler has made eight career starts against the White Sox, posting a 5-2 record with a 3.19 ERA and 63 strikeouts in 42 1/3 innings. This season, Salazar has won both of his starts against Chicago, allowing three runs on seven hits over 12 frames. Rodon (3-8, 4.32 ERA) threw a career-high 122 pitches over six innings to get the win against Miami his last time out. It marked his first victory since May 22. Rodon has allowed just two earned runs over his last 12 innings. The White Sox lefty has faced Cleveland six times (five starts) in his career. Rodon is sporting an undefeated record against the Tribe at 3-0 with a 1.75 ERA. He has whiffed 34 batters across 36 innings. Rodon earned a no-decision against the Indians back on June 19, when he allowed two runs on eight hits over 6 1/3 innings. Carlos Santana has a career batting average of.364 (4-for-11) off Rodon. Santana is the only Cleveland batter with double-digit career at-bats vs. the southpaw hitting over.200. Slugger Jose Abreu has the most at-bats of any White Sox players against Salazar with 16. Abreu is hitting.375 with three home runs and four RBIs vs. the Tribe hurler. The Indians will not have to make a corresponding roster move when they activate Salazar off the disabled list on Thursday. On Wednesday, right-hander Josh Tomlin was placed on the Family Medical Emergency List, leaving an open spot on the 25-man roster. Adam Eaton s special grand-slam secret: Blow a bubble for extra focus By Adrian Garro / MLB.com August 17th, 2016 Delivering in clutch situations is one of the most impactful elements of baseball. With the game on the line, how will you perform? Will you be able to cut out all the noise, all the distractions, all the extracurricular elements that can sometimes get to be too much? When it comes down to that pitch, that moment, will you be able to keep it all out of your consciousness and... stay as committed to the hunk of bubblegum in your mouth as your offensive task at hand? Well, Adam Eaton can, and did on this go-ahead grand slam on Wednesday night: Let's look at that again, courtesy of MLB.com's Jordan Bastian: Jordan Adam Eaton was blowing a bubble at the moment he hit the grand slam off Cody Allen. 10:10 PM - 17 Aug Retweets 1,148 likes

That all went down in the White Sox-Indians game, turning a 7-6 White Sox deficit into a come-frombehind 10-7 win. That's some tremendous focus by Eaton, who timed a Cody Allen curveball perfectly while remaining fully involved with blowing a bubble. As Eaton told MLB.com's Scott Merkin after the game, he wasn't exactly aware of his feat as it happened: "I heard that. I didn't know that. I think I was so flustered about my swing before, I was just trying to make contact, not to look really stupid, and apparently I blew a bubble. I'm all right with that." Still, he had to admit he was (perhaps subconsciously) focused on the bubble, too: "Sometimes you do some things you're not thinking about, and mine must be blowing a bubble, so we'll take it." We already know the humor gum can provide in the dugout, and Starlin Castro showed us all firsthand how powerful it can be on defense. Thanks to Eaton, we may have also gotten a glimpse into its offensive skills as well. Take it away, Dean Martin... Adam Eaton s late grand slam helps White Sox top Indians By Dan Hayes / CSN Chicago August 17th, 2016 CLEVELAND -- Adam Eaton insists the bubble he blew before hitting a game-winning grand slam Wednesday night wasn t the equivalent of his eyes lighting up at the sight of a fat pitch. On the contrary, the White Sox outfielder said he was focused after looking bad on the previous two pitches of the at-bat. But right before the point of impact, Eaton blew a perfect bubble and then matched it with a flawless swing on an 0-2 pitch from Cleveland Indians closer Cody Allen. The first grand slam of Eaton s career helped the White Sox snap a seven-game losing streak as they topped the Indians 10-7 in front of 14,371 at Progressive Field. Dioner Navarro also had an RBI single during a five-run ninth inning against the American League Central s top team. I think I was so flustered about my swing before, I was just trying to make contact, not to look really stupid, and apparently I blew a bubble, Eaton said. I m all right with that. It was a lot of fun. I give a lot of credit to the guys I had ahead of me to even put me in that position. The White Sox had already rallied twice earlier in the contest before Todd Frazier started a one-out comeback in the ninth with an infield single off Allen. Trailing 7-5, the White Sox offense hadn t done anything since the fourth inning as starter Carlos Carrasco and two relievers kept them quiet. But singles by Frazier and J.B. Shuck and a Tim Anderson walk loaded the bases. Dioner Navarro s blooper to left hit off the glove of Jose Ramirez to make it a one-run game and brought up Eaton. Three pitches later, the White Sox delivered the same kind of punch they ve experienced too many times to count since May. I ve felt one of those before, White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. For us, we realize what it feels like, but we realize it can happen, too. I think that s part of fighting all the way through to the ninth inning and not giving it to them. You make them earn it and tonight we just fought our way back where we get something and it goes in your favor.

The White Sox need a lot more like this one to go in their favor and realistically don t have the time. Though they have winnable upcoming series at home against Oakland and Philadelphia, the White Sox remain nine back in the race for the second wild-card spot. They also sit at with 43 games to play. Despite their extremely long odds, the White Sox refuse to give in. That was made clear early when it looked like the offense would go nowhere against Carrasco, who struck out four of the first six he faced and had a 2-0 lead. But Shuck singled to start the third inning and Anderson blasted his seventh homer, a two-run shot off the left-field foul pole to tie the score. His ninth-inning walk was also the fifth Anderson has drawn in 48 plate appearances after he took only two in his first 203. Down 4-2, the White Sox pulled ahead in the fourth inning as Frazier doubled in two and scored the goahead run later when the Indians botched a rundown. But Carrasco didn t budge from there as he retired nine of the last 11 he faced. Very fun to play in that kind of game, especially when Eaton hit the grand slam, Anderson said. It was a big moment for us. It was also quite a big bubble, though Eaton did it involuntarily and teammates told him about it later. He also shot down the notion that Allen left the pitch too far up and the bubble was a reaction to seeing a pitch in the zone. It wasn t hanging, Eaton said. Concentration you do some things you re not thinking about, and mine must be blowing a bubble, so we ll take it." White Sox setup man Nate Jones has developed into more than regular guy By Dan Hayes / CSN Chicago August 17th, 2016 CLEVELAND -- When it comes to his recovery from elbow surgery, Nate Jones feels as if he s like any other pitcher in the big leagues. Now two years and two weeks removed from Tommy John surgery, the White Sox right-hander can be used on three straight days. He can pitch multiple innings. About the only thing the White Sox won t do is ask Jones to warmup twice in the bullpen during the same game. It s a spot Jones wasn t sure he d ever reach when he returned to the majors last August. But here he is and look what Jones has developed into. Not only has Jones with three saves and a 2.13 ERA in 55 innings -- continued to strike out more than a hitter per inning, he has harnessed his command of the zone and drastically improved his walk rate. Right away last year I was kind of battling a little bit of soreness each time I threw, Jones said. But the further we got away from the surgery the better I recovered. This year I haven t had any problems or major soreness or anything like that. I can tell how much more quickly I bounce back than right out of the gate last year. I m just a regular guy. Perhaps on the injury front he s a regular guy, but Jones has developed into a formidable late-innings pitcher. Several major league scouts said Jones improved command of the fastball and slider has turned him into an outstanding setup man and potentially a closer.

Headed into this season, Jones walked 3.58 walks batters per nine innings, including four per in This season, Jones has averaged 2 walks per nine. He attributes it to applying some of the lessons he learned early in his career and credits many of his former veteran teammates for helping him to make the adjustment. It s always good to have that foundation, Jones said. I ve just learned what they taught me and applied it to now because in 14 and 15 I had a lot of time to think about it. Just attacking hitters and getting ahead with strike one. That s the biggest thing, if you get ahead and stay ahead you can attack and go after the hitters instead of, if you re falling behind, you have to throw strikes and they know that and that s when they start hitting. Jones is on pace to appear in a career-high 76 games this season. He broke through the scar tissue last season and hasn t experienced the same soreness when he s on the mound in Still, White Sox manager Robin Ventura remains cautious with Jones. He said one of the reasons he doesn t like to ask him to warm up more than once in the bullpen is he doesn t want to jeopardize Jones career. You re always going to be very careful, especially the guy who is high velocity and has the ability to do the things and be available as much as Nate is, Ventura said. So you are careful, as far as if he feels anything or is tired, you monitor his usage. Jones is pleased to be in this position. He wasn t sure what to expect as he rehabbed from his July 30, 2014 surgery. He just trusted what doctors, trainers and teammates who d had Tommy John told him and worked hard. Now he has seen the benefits. You re always wondering is it ever going to go away? Or am I going to be sore throughout my career constantly? Jones said. That goes through your mind a little. But you ve got to trust the process and keep working hard at it and it has worked out this year. It s a long process. Trust the process and you get out of it what you put into it, so bust your ass every day and it will show in the end. Wednesday s recap: White Sox 10, Indians 7 By Colleen Kane / Chicago Tribune August 17th, 2016 White Sox outfielder Adam Eaton hit his first career grand slam off Indians closer Cody Allen in the ninth inning to lift the Sox to a 10-7 victory at Progressive Field. The Sox trailed 7-5 heading into the ninth, but Todd Frazier and J.B. Shuck singled and Tim Anderson walked to load the bases. After Frazier scored on Dioner Navarro s RBI single to short left field, Eaton hit his 11th homer of the year. Sox right-hander Anthony Ranaudo gave up five earned runs over four innings to put the Sox in an early hole. Making just his second start with the Sox since he was acquired in early May from the Rangers, Ranaudo gave up homers to Lonnie Chisenhall and Carlos Santana. Brandon Guyer s two-run single off Sox reliever Michael Ynoa gave the Indians the lead in the fifth. At the plate

Indians right-hander Carlos Carrasco struck out four of the first Sox batters he faced in two perfect innings and fanned 11 over 6 2/3 innings. J.B. Shuck singled to start the third, and Tim Anderson hit a two-run homer off the left-field foul pole to tie it at 2-2. That extended Anderson s hitting streak to 10 games. Todd Frazier hit a two-run double off the left-center field wall to tie it at 4-4 in the fourth. He scored while J.B. Shuck was caught in a rundown after reaching on a fielding error. On the mound Santana hit a solo shot to lead off the bottom of the third, and Chisenhall added an RBI single in the inning. In the field Anderson missed a potential double play when he came off second base in the fourth inning, giving the Indians a runner on second with one out. The Indians tied it at 5-5 on Jason Kipnis sacrifice fly. Last time out Ranaudo had made his only previous Sox appearance on July 27, when he allowed three earned runs over 6 2/3 innings against the Cubs at Wrigley Field. It was such a strange situation, Sox catcher Dioner Navarro said. I didn t really know what his repertoire was or how he likes to work. It was a bit of a challenge, which I m always up to. We talked before the game, figured some things out, and we went after it. He did a pretty good job. Adam Eaton s first grand slam helps White Sox defeat Indians at last By Colleen Kane / Chicago Tribune August 17th, 2016 In front of a stunned crowd at Progressive Field on Wednesday night, Adam Eaton crossed home plate and handed out one, two and then three high fives to his waiting teammates. Eaton's first career grand slam off Indians closer Cody Allen in the ninth inning lifted the Sox to a 10-7 victory and ended a seven-game losing streak to the Indians. The Sox trailed 7-5 heading into the ninth, but Todd Frazier and J.B. Shuck singled and Tim Anderson walked to load the bases. After Frazier scored on Dioner Navarro's RBI single that fell into short left field, Eaton hit his 11th homer to right. Sox closer David Robertson earned his 30th save despite putting two runners on base in the ninth. Sox manager Robin Ventura spoke before the game about trying to overcome the Sox's poor play in the American League Central. "You have to figure out a way to turn that around," Ventura said. "We have a group of guys getting a shot to play, and you want them to have the feeling of going up against these guys and winning some games. That's really what you're striving for now, to get those guys to have a good feeling." Eaton's blast which came as he blew a bubble with his gum prevented Sox right-hander Anthony Ranaudo's second loss in two starts for the Sox. Ranaudo stepped into the raucous atmosphere of the City Series to pitch a quality start in his Sox debut at Wrigley Field on July 27, but the Indians drove him from his second start after four innings.

Ranaudo gave up five earned runs on eight hits, including Lonnie Chisenhall's two-run homer in the second inning and Carlos Santana's solo shot in the third. Photos from the game on Aug. 17, 2016, at Progressive Field. Ranaudo, who was acquired from the Rangers in May, was called up from Triple-A Charlotte and jumped into the rotation Wednesday to fill in for right-hander Miguel Gonzalez, who is on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right groin. The Sox were hopeful Ranaudo could fill in capably after he allowed three earned runs over 6 2/3 innings against the Cubs. "It was such a strange situation," Sox catcher Dioner Navarro said of Ranaudo's first call-up. "I didn't really know what his repertoire was or how he likes to work. It was a bit of a challenge, which I'm always up to. We talked before the game, figured some things out, and we went after it. He did a pretty good job." Ranaudo also gave up an RBI single to Chisenhall in the third, and he wasn't helped by the Sox defense in the fourth. Anderson missed a potential double play when he came off second base early in the fourth, giving the Indians a runner on second with one out. The Indians tied it at 5-5 on Jason Kipnis' sacrifice fly to left field. Ventura pulled Ranaudo after four innings, and Brandon Guyer's two-run single off Sox reliever Michael Ynoa gave the Indians the lead in the fifth. The Sox at least were able to put together some offense against Indians right-hander Carlos Carrasco despite his 11 strikeouts and no walks over 6 2/3 innings. Shuck singled to start the third, and Anderson hit a two-run homer off the left-field pole to make it 2-2 and extend Anderson's hitting streak to 10 games. Frazier hit a two-run double off the left-center field wall to make it 4-4 in the fourth. He scored while Shuck was caught in a rundown after reaching on a fielding error. Confidence helping Tim Anderson navigate his way through rookie season By Colleen Kane / Chicago Tribune August 17th, 2016 White Sox manager Robin Ventura knows Tim Anderson is sure to hit more bumps as the 23-year-old shortstop navigates the early stages of his major-league career. But Ventura thinks Anderson has one valuable trait to help him. "The one thing he has that a lot of great players have is the ability to have the confidence to fight through it," Ventura said. "He always had supreme confidence, and he should have it. It's the hardest thing to have and to keep with you because the game can beat you down." Ventura moved Anderson down in the lineup on the first leg of this nine-game trip to Kansas City, Miami and Cleveland, in part to take the pressure off him. Anderson extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a two-run home run against the Indians on Wednesday. Entering the game, he was batting.324 with three doubles, a home run and six runs scored during the stretch.

Anderson, who is hitting.272 with a.705 OPS overall, said he has been able to stay positive through his rough patches. "That's something I never lose, is my confidence, no matter what kind of night I have," Anderson said. "That's something that's always been with me." The confidence extends to Anderson's view on his ability to draw walks. During Anderson's nine-game hitting streak, he has four walks to go with 12 strikeouts. Over his first 47 games, he had just two walks. Anderson said from the beginning that more would come as he settled in. "As I grow mature and become a better hitter, they're going to happen," he said. "There's more to come." A little more than two months into his major-league career, Anderson is facing American League Central opponents for the second and third times. He said he likes his growing familiarity with the pitchers. "I'm kind of figuring out how they're going to pitch me and kind of coming up with a game plan," Anderson said. "It's better to see them twice. I feel more comfortable now than the first time because I didn't know what to expect." Central slide: Entering Wednesday, the Sox had lost 25 of their last 35 games against AL Central rivals, including seven straight to the Indians. That losing streak against the Indians was the longest since a 14- game slide at the end of "(The Indians) have just outplayed us," Ventura said. "Any time you have that in your division it hurts because you're going to play them so much, and to gain ground is really tough if you're losing head to head." Frazier starts, Eaton finishes 5-run 9th as White Sox stun Tribe By Daryl Van Schouwen / Chicago Sun-Times August 17th, 2016 CLEVELAND Todd Frazier has been at or near the top of the major league home run leaders for most of the year, leads the White Sox with 74 RBI and at third base has stabilized what s been a shaky corner of the Sox infield since Joe Crede was there. But an important part of Frazier s game has gotten away from him, not unlike the bats which inexplicably began flying out of his hands five times in the last handful of games. Frazier was batting.137 with a.598 OPS with runners in scoring position, compared to.223 and.726 in his career. Frazier brushed that up a bit by driving in two runs with a double against Carlos Carrasco in the fourth inning and starting a stunning five-run Sox rally in the ninth against closer Cody Allen with a single to left in the White Sox 10-7 win over the Indians Wednesday at Progressive Field. Adam Eaton s first career grand slam, on an 0-2 pitch, gave the Sox a three-run lead, and David Robertson put the tying run at the plate but worked through a nervous ninth for his 30th save. The Indians had beaten the Sox seven straight times and were 62-0 after eight innings. Frazier and [J.B.] Shuck get on and [Dioner Navarro, bloop RBI single] gets a big base hit to put me in that position, said Eaton, who hit his career high 11th homer. To not give up and have a whole-team effort is huge. It shows a lot of fight in this team. It would be easy to lay down there. Tim Anderson, who homered in the third inning, also walked in ninth before Navarro s bloop single.

It was one of Frazier s more satisfying games in what has been a good/bad first season with the Sox. When asked to grade his performance, Frazier says he doesn t know what to pencil in, certainly not an A by his standards. Perhaps an incomplete. I wouldn t know where to put myself, said Frazier, who ranks fourth among AL third basemen. You don t look at the batting average (.208) but you also look at other stuff like runners in scoring position and little things like getting a guy over. Tem stuff. But runners in scoring position, geez, that has to be better. Frazier said he ll use these last six-plus weeks to keep working, continue to talk to hitting coaches Todd Steverson and Greg Sparks and hope to iron some things out. If I look back on the year right now, I need to do some more work again [in the offseason], he said. I have a month and a half to work on things, and hopefully build off it toward some positive things for next year. Some positives in the Sox victory, which raised their record to 4-4 on a road trip with Thursday s series finale yet to play: Anderson extended his hitting streak to 10 games with a two-run homer, his seventh, in the third, and Frazier alertly scored the Sox fifth run when Shuck got trapped in a rundown. Lonnie Chisenhall and Carlos Santana homered for the Indians against AAA call-up Anthony Ranaudo, who lasted four innings. When the Sox were rolling in April, Frazier reflected on how sweet it was and how challenging it can be to play meaningless games in August and September. But he insists his frame of mind is good, playing for a team he would like to stay with beyond next season, his last before free agency. While the energy stage has leveled off in the clubhouse commensurate with the mounting losses, Frazier continues to be a man about the room, interacting with veterans, manager Robin Ventura and staff and rookies alike. His own struggles haven t broken him. I m good; every day I come to the park, I m the same person, Frazier said. I don t change a bit. I get ready for the game the same way. I have to look myself in the mirror and say Let s go here, stop trying to swing at pitches you can t hit, start swinging at strikes and get after the game like you know how. I m having fun but at the same time it s not fun when you re not doing great. You have to keep battling. White Sox notes: Eaton and Cabrera, Anderson, Burdi, close calls By Daryl Van Schouwen / Chicago Sun-Times August 17th, 2016 CLEVELAND As double-barrel throwing outfield tandems go, there is none better than Melky Cabrera and Adam Eaton of the White Sox. Eaton leads all outfielders with 17 assists and Cabrera was tied for seventh with 10. The Astros with George Springer and Colby Rasmus (12 each) and Red Sox with Jackie Bradley Jr. (12) and Mookie Betts (nine) aren t far behind Eaton and Cabrera, who enjoy showing off their arms and being challenged. Even though Cabrera, 32, is accomplished at the skill he continues to work at it, often making six or eight throws a day, coach Daryl Boston said. He tries to push me to the limits, throwing in different game situations, Cabrera said. Boston, a former outfielder, said most of Cabrera s skill is natural but he has polished it up working on it. His release point and his accuracy have been money.

With 100 career assists, Cabrera is fifth among active outfield leaders behind Carlos Beltran (142), Jeff Francouer (134), Ichiro Suzuki (122) and Nick Markakis (101). Eaton, the hero in Wednesday s 10-7 Sox victory with his first career grand slam, had an inconsistent release point last season, Boston said, when he had eight assists. It s 10 times better this year, Boston said. He worked on his footwork during spring training when he was rehabbing his shoulder. Close but no cigars The Sox 43 one-run games were the most in the major leagues, and 68 of their first 119 games have been decided by one or two runs including 39 of the last 59. We ve played [many] one-run games since I ve been here, said manager Robin Ventura, in his fifth season. It s just part of the action. Some of it could be that we pitch and for certain periods of time we ve struggled offensively. That s when you end up playing a lot of one-run games. Four teams in the majors have scored fewer runs than the Sox, who play in a hitter-friendly park at U.S. Cellular Field. Sox pitchers are 11th in ERA. Not close at all in division In the AL Central, the Sox are including a 9-3 record against the Twins. It s nothing too terribly out of the ordinary for a franchise that was against the division since 2009 with one season (37-35 in 2012) above.500. To gain ground is really tough if you re losing head to head, Ventura said. You have to figure those out and figure out a way to turn that around. Anderson connects Rookie shortstop Tim Anderson hit his seventh home run, off the left field foul pole, to pull the Sox into a 2-2 tie in the third inning. Ventura had Anderson batting eighth for the second time in the series to take some pressure off him, he said, although Anderson has a 10-game hitting streak going. Just looking for a pitch I could handle, Anderson said. I felt like [Carlos Carrasco] was going to come in and he did, and I was able to get the barrel to it. It was great [game]. Great momentum. Very fun to play in that kind of game, especially when Eaton hit the grand slam. It was a big moment for us. On the farm Right-hander Zach Burdi of Downers Grove, the Sox second first-round pick in the June draft out of Louisville, earned his first professional save Tuesday at AAA Charlotte by throwing two scoreless innings with five strikeouts against Gwinnett. Burdi has pitched 14 1/3 consecutive scoreless innings between AA Birmingham and Charlotte and is averaging 12.3 strikeouts per nine innings. Over his last eight appearances he has 20 strikeouts while walking three. Burdi is a likely September call-up. Second-round pick Alec Hansen (57 strikeouts, 37 2/3 innings) extended his scoreless streak to 17 innings for Advanced Rookie Great Falls at Ogden Tuesday with five innings of hitless ball.

Former White Sox minor leaguer fighting cancer one day at a time By Jeff Arnold / Chicago Sun-Times August 17th, 2016 Rick Carone was given six months to live when he was diagnosed with Stage IV pancreatic cancer in the spring of Carone, who lives in suburban Cary and who spent parts of four seasons as a White Sox minor-league catcher, vowed to make the most of each day he had left. But sensing Carone could use an emotional lift, former Sox designated hitter Adam LaRoche then with the Nationals invited Carone to take batting practice with the Nationals at Wrigley Field. But Wrigley was only the first stop of a journey that has allowed Carone to use his love for baseball to raise money to find a cure for the disease he has lived with for the past three years. (Taking batting practice) took me back to my time when I played putting on the uniform again, smelling that grass and being on that field again, Carone said this week. It was just one of those things that spoke to me and inspired me. Since his visit to Wrigley, Carone has hit with the Giants at AT&T Park and the Marlins in Miami as part a BP For A Cause program that has raised nearly $43,000 for cancer research. In both cases, the Giants and Marlins have matched donated funds and have also designated money raised through their respective Strike Out Cancer initiatives for The Team Carone Foundation. Carone, 45, continues to undergo chemotherapy treatments in his on-going fight against cancer. But like he did following his diagnosis, Carone makes the most of the chances he is given. This keeps me going it keeps me alive, Carone said. It keeps me busy, it keeps my mind busy.it s emotional. I have to catch my breath after a few swings. Carone will take batting practice with the Sox at U.S. Cellular Field on Sept. 6 before traveling to Miller Park in Milwaukee to hit with the Brewers on Sept. 22. All proceeds raised towards a $10,000 goal will go directly to Lurie Children s Hospital of Chicago. This year s efforts, which has raised more than $6,600, will honor McKai Malooley, a 1-year-old from Carone s hometown of Cary who was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer, rhabdomysarcoma. In McKai s case, the cancer which affects the muscles and soft tissue was discovered in the boy s leg, but has since spread throughout his body. As the father of two girls, Carone said the young boy s diagnosis hit home and gave him another reason to use his foundation s BP For A Cause program to help others. Like Carone did three years ago, McKai faces an uncertain future, which has inspired Carone to continue to use baseball as a means to raise money to fund cancer research. Carone hopes to have McKai and his family with him at U.S. Cellular Field when he hits with the Sox next month as a guest of closer David Robertson, whose father-in-law recently passed away after battling pancreatic cancer. For Carone, it represents the next step in his journey. I m not good at a lot of things, but I can still hit a baseball, Carone said. I think God has put me in this spot right here, right now to give back. When I surpassed that six-month (life expectancy) and then one year and Adam had me out to hit (at Wrigley), then it was two years, I was like, hey I m obviously here for a reason.

Adam Eaton put an end to that in stunning fashion. Eaton's ninth-inning grand slam off closer Cody Allen capped a five-run rally and lifted the White Sox to a 10-7 win Wednesday night. "That was a lot of fun," Eaton said. Chicago was 2-8 against Cleveland, including seven straight losses going into the game. "You don't give up, that's what it shows you," manager Robin Ventura said. "These guys keep playing all the way through every game because they know they can do it. Good things happen when you fight through." The Indians went ahead 7-5 in the fifth inning and the White Sox had been held scoreless since the fourth. Allen (2-5) retired the first hitter before Chicago loaded the bases on infield singles by Todd Frazier and J.B. Shuck, and a walk to Tim Anderson. Dioner Navarro's bloop hit down the left field line scored a run before Eaton homered to right on an 0-2 pitch for his first career grand slam. Driving ball into the seats was the last thing on Eaton's mind, especially when he fell behind in the count. "I was just looking to make contact," he said with a laugh. "I'm obviously happy about the result." "I didn't actually think that was a bad pitch to Eaton, he just put a good swing on it," Allen said. "That guy's a good player. That's kind of how the inning went." Jacob Turner (1-1) pitched the eighth and David Robertson retired the final two hitters with two on in the ninth for his 30th save. Chicago's comeback prevented Cleveland from increasing its division lead to seven games over secondplace Detroit, which lost to Kansas City. Anderson hit a two-run homer and Frazier had a two-run double for the White Sox. Cleveland starter Carlos Carrasco struck out 11 in 6 2/3 innings. Lonnie Chisenhall homered and drove in three runs while Carlos Santana also homered. Brandon Guyer's two-run single gave Cleveland its two-run lead in the fifth that held up until Chicago's big ninth. Chisenhall's homer in the second put Cleveland ahead, but Carrasco gave up Anderson's home run in the third.
