3 East Sussex CTC News No December 2017 (Retiring) Secretary s Notes Well, following the recent East Sussex AGM, you now have a new Secretary in the person of Mia Hamilton. I must say that when I took on the job in 1987 I only intended to do it for a few years, and never expected it to last for 30. I ve found the work interesting and fulfilling, but it has only been through the hard work, dedication and co-operation of numerous Committee members over the years that we have been able to keep the DA/Group running as well as it has, and I d like to say a big thank you to all those who have given up their time to make this possible, and so allow us to continue enjoying our cycling in the company of like minded friends. I haven t completely left the scene, as I will be working with Mia for the next couple of months to ensure a smooth handover and I will still be editing the Runs List & Newsletter, and looking after the website. I doubt Mia will wish to stay in post as long as I have she may already be regretting her decision! - But I would like to wish her all the best, and remind her that the Committee are always there to support her. As many of you will now be aware, Esther Carpenter will be standing down as Midweek Secretary next year after many years of service. The Secretary s job is vital in ensuring that the Group runs properly organising committee meetings, answering enquiries, welcoming new members, etc. The Midweek Group cannot continue without a Secretary, so if anyone is interested in taking on the post then have a word with Esther about what is involved and remember, you can always delegate! Though we re more than half way through Autumn, the weather has remained fairly mild for the time of year and as I write, the temperatures have only just started to drop into single figures. Rides have been well supported and to my knowledge no abandoned or curtailed rides. However, word is that we could be in for some really low temperatures in coming months, so be prepared to wrap up warm, or to stay safe indoors if it gets too bad. The Hill Climb and Freewheeling competition were held as usual, but only attracted a small number, 6 on the Hill Climb and 7 on the Freewheeling. Susan Rix won the Hill Climb, being only 9 seconds from her estimated time, and Phil Chadwick sailed down the Jevington valley to retain his title in the Freewheeling. Coming up we have the usual Festive social events. Bookings are coming in well for the Christmas Lunch, which is once again being catered by my daughter, Emma, (with assistance from DA members) and I would urge people to get their bookings in to Jenny before the Nov. 26 th deadline. It s always a very enjoyable event. The following Saturday (9 th Dec.) sees the Cyclists Carol Service, which this year is being held at the Gospel Mission Church in Station Road, Hailsham, behind South Road car park. It s hoped this will be a more accessible location for many. Then on Wed. 20 th there s the traditional Midweek Mince Pie elevenses at John & Joyce Taylor s in Hailsham, which attracts good numbers from all our groups. Last, but not least, we have Joyce s annual New Year Ramble on Jan. 7 th A nice change from our usual bike rides. So if you fancy pulling on your walking boots you are welcome to join us, and hopefully walk off some of the excesses of the Christmas and New Year period. Whatever you intend to do, enjoy yourselves, and I hope to see you up the road. David From your new Secretary As new DA Secretary I m very grateful to everyone concerned for support and encouragement, especially following on from David Rix, who worked tirelessly in the job for 30 years. David has already helped me enormously with an introduction to the paperwork, not least of all two huge boxes of records, photos and archived materials. Mia Hamilton 3 Hill climb riders at the top of Firle Hill.
4 Committee Matters Items from the meeting of 27 th October 2017 A27 Lancing crossing closure. David Rix has written objecting to the plans, and pointing out that though ½ a mile was not a long detour for cyclists, it made a lot of difference for pedestrians and that a pedestrian and cycle bridge at the location of the current crossing would be a better solution. CTC sign at Ripe. David Rix has spoken to the lady at Ripe Village Stores, and it is hoped to arrange to have the Winged Wheel from the Lamb Inn, which is being re-developed for housing, taken down and put up on the stores. Sustrans. David Rix has received a copy of the Autumn Hub newsletter from Sustrans. This included news that they are carrying out a full audit of the National Cycle Network, with the intention of putting in place plans for its long term future. They will establish a Gold standard that high priority sections must reach as well as setting maintenance requirements for the wider network. The Committee agrees that this is well overdue, as many sections are woefully inadequate. Cycling UK/CTC web update. The Club have updated the website, which includes changes to the Member Group pages. David Rix had been asked to check ours and confirm that everything was alright. It had been necessary to make some minor amendments, but otherwise there were no problems. The new website includes a member group resources area, with handy toolkits for each Group officer role. Award for Egret s Way Project. The Egret s Way Project has received an Award from CPRE Sussex (the Campaign to Protect Rural England). They were a full award winner in the Rural Enterprise Category. The Project Chairman, Neville Harrison, hopes that this recognition will help in their campaign to get funding to complete the route. The next meeting will be on Friday 12 th Jan., at The Bays, Broyle Lane, Ringmer, starting at 7:30 p.m. Midweek Section Notes Another year is slipping swiftly to a close and it s been something of a rollercoaster for a few members of our Section. Happily Ron Street & Pat Graham have made good recoveries and both are now back on their bikes. Sadly Ron has decided that his cycling days are numbered and at the AGM in October he handed over his job as treasurer to Richard Thatcher. Ron came to us shortly after being widowed and has been a quietly entertaining addition to our number, his quiet demeanour belies an adventurous spirit as he has joined in foreign trips, camping weeks in the New Forest and weekends away with Seaford & Newhaven, as well as joining in all our social activities. He has been a great asset to the Section and we will miss his company. With Richard s move to Treasurer a vacancy occurred for a Chairman and Geoff Boxall stepped in to fill the breach. We are now looking forward to our Christmas activities; firstly the Carol Service, which is on December 9th this year. Charles & Connie put in a tremendous amount of work to keep this event going. Charles has assembled a very good orchestra again and we are having more music and fewer readings this year. We will also be at a new venue this time. The Hailsham Gospel Mission Church, which is in Station Road, is the place to be. Station Road borders the large Cuckoo Trail car park and is approached from via the footpath into the town. There is cycle parking behind the building which can be reached through a gate at the side. You don t have to be a fundamentalist Christian to enjoy the service, and can socialise over refreshments afterwards. And an added interest for us is that Bruce Allcorn made the cross that is on the façade of the chapel. Then on the 20th we find ourselves at John & Joyce Taylor s for mince pies and the Big Christmas Card exchange. This is always a popular event and to add to our pleasure Joyce has had a new kitchen installed. The following week, December 27 th is the day after Boxing Day, and I was warned when I popped into 4
5 Wyvale to book our visit that Mrs. Jasmine and her family, who run the café privately, are undecided whether they will be open for business that day. PLEASE LOOK AT THE SECTION & DA WEBSITES TO CHECK WHERE WE ARE GOING. Esther has also been in contact with Bodle Street Green WI, and they are pleased to hear that we would like to visit them for our regular two lunches next year. They missed us in the Autumn and declared that the recent reduction in numbers did not concern them. In spite of this the committee felt that we should make every effort to support the functions, so as soon as the dates are available please put them in your diaries. Very best wishes for the coming festive season and good cycling in Baggy Shorts Seaford & Newhaven Section Notes A cooler day on 17 th September but fine for nine of us to meet at Happy Days, then six rode on to Horam for our picnic. It was a lovely day on the 24 th, but only eight arrived at Ditchling for 11 s, then John Holmes, Mick Hills and Geoff Boxall left us. John Maxim had joined us again which was nice, and stayed with us as we rode the Greenway before turning for home, leaving just four of us to climb up to Cuckfield, then down to Beechhurst Park. It was lovely there having our picnic in the sunshine, then we returned via Slugwash Lane for tea at Ditchling Tea Rooms. Into October and a wet start with a fine middle then wet end, but it wasn t too bad when eight of us met at Arlington Tea Gardens for 11 s. Geoff & Jenny Boxall and Mick H. by car, as it hadn t looked too good. Emma had joined us which was nice and, with we three and Norman W., rode to Ringmer where we had our picnic in the dry at Geoff & Jenny s. We were then able to check with Emma what she would like us to do for the D.A. Lunch. October 8 th and another good day, just as well as it was the Hill Climb, so as usual we were all involved. As I am not allowed to ride steep hills, I stayed at the bottom and started them off. Four had left after 11 s which was a shame, so only six rode the hill - David, Susan, John H. Norman W. Ted Haynes and Jon Cooper - and I m pleased to say Susan won it. Ted and Jon stayed up there and headed along the top eastwards, while the others came back down to join me and we headed for Arlington reservoir for our picnic. A good day again for the 15 th, when nine of us met at Pevensey Bay. Geoff, Jenny, Mick H. and Raoul Meade then headed back, while we, Norman W. and David Allen rode eastwards, then north on the old road acoss the levels, to climb up to Hooe. Right down the narrow lane to the Church, where we were in time for cups of tea or coffee from the ladies there. They were pleased to see us, as they had not had many at the service that morning, so we helped to boost their offerings up a bit. We then sat outside for our picnic. It was lucky we had had that drink as we had intended to have tea at Chilley Farm, but they are closed Sunday afternoons during the winter months so we had to ride on to The Loom Mill instead. October 22 nd and a very cold, strong wind when twelve of us met for 11 s at Raystede. Then Phil Chadwick and his friend, John Gallsworthy and John Holmes, left us as we headed up towards Framfield. On the way I went sideways and caught my front wheel in a rut at the side of the road and slipped over. As it was so cold Jenny checked that I was alright to carry on, and offered for us to have our picnic at Ringmer instead in the warm. This I gratefully accepted, and we turned back via East Hoathly. Thank you Jenny. It was a cold northerly wind the next week as well, but ten were out and nine made it to Framfield after 11 s at Happy Days. John Holmes had left us after 11 s to head home. Cold again on November 5 th for the Freewheeling, and David thought it would be too cold for me with all the waiting about, so there was only David, Susan, Norman W., Mick Hills, Phil Chadwick, John Holmes and Jon Cooper to Freewheel, with Phil winning it again. David picked me up at on his way back from home after collecting the paperwork for the AGM. Geoff and Jenny were already at the South View Rooms when we arrived, as were Pat and Roger Bacon who had opened up the building and got the kettle on, thank you. Ann 5
