Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled departure. CBTC members and guests must sign the waiver prior to departure. Take Highway 17 South or I95 South to Richmond Hill exit. Go east about 5 miles on Georgia 144/ Ford Avenue, TL on Georgia 144 spur and go 4 miles to Ft. McAllister State Park. Park at boat ramp on left prior to park entrance. Darrel Snuggerud December Holiday Lights Ride (social) 10 Meet at Johnson Square (corner Bull and Congress). This is a slow, fun, family ride. Leisurely ride through the historic area and Ardsley Park, followed by a holiday celebration at Jalapeños Restaurant, 7 East Broughton. Head and tail lights required. C=10-14 mph. S=9-11 mph If there is a ride cancellation, the CBTC web site will be updated with a cancellation notice at least one and a half hours prior. An will also be sent to club members by the ride director. Club openings At last month s meeting, Rick Royer announced that he was stepping down as the CBTC Social Director. Rick has served in this capacity for quite some time, and has strived to arrange events of interest to club members. So we are seeking a person to fill this position, ideally someone with the same passion as Rick to keep the proverbial ball rolling in the future regarding club social events. To ease any anxieties that may exist concerning social director responsibilities, there are several events that occur annually and require little coordination. The annual soup ride mixes riding and eating delicious soups and chili s, and generally happens early in the calendar year. At the end of the year, CBTC members participate in the Savannah Christmas Light ride. A club outing to take in a Savannah Bannana s game has been a summer event of late. These and many of the other events require minimal coordination. So, in closing, if there are folks willing to assume the role, please contact Ken Robichaux (contact information above). 4 Bike Ed This month s edition of Bike Ed outlines some of the Savannah area organized rides, just in case club members want to widen their biking horizons and see how (and if) they match up with some of the better (and faster) local riders. Savannah Wheelmen (and, I suppose, a good number of Wheelwomen) The Wheelmen Cycle Club offers the Tech Tuesday Rides. The ride starts at the Georgia Tech (Savannah) campus on Jimmy Deloach Parkway. Warmups begin at 5pm on the big loop and last until approximately 6:15 when the group switches to the short loop for some criterium practice. If you ride, the convention is to ride clockwise in the right lane. Slower riders stay to the right, fasters riders to the left. The road is not closed, so you much watch for and yield to traffic and pedestrians. Perry Rubber - Gallery Espresso Ride Saturday mornings, start at 8am, Perry Rubber Bike Shop on Bull/Liberty. The first 30 minutes are a group ride at +/- 18mph to the Gould Elementary School, where the group reforms and determines routes. Ride then splits into the following groups: 30x20: Thirty total miles at approximately 20 mph 40x20: Forty miles at approximately 20 mph 47x25: 47 miles at approximately 25 mph 47x25+: 47 miles at unlimited speed, typically 25+ mph, sometimes 35+ Hunter Army Air Field Ride This is not a club-affiliated ride, nonetheless it is one worth consideration. On Thursday, riders gather together on Hunter Army Air Field (HAAF) and ride the perimeter road and elsewhere on Hunter to garner anywhere from 20 to 35 miles (sometimes way beyond). You will need a pass to get onto to HAAF, but that s easy if you go into the Montgomery Street gate, and spend about 5-10 minutes to get a temporary (30 day) pass.it requires your personal information and a quick background check. Once that s done, proceed to the parking lot across from the base fitness center (directly in front of the Montgomery gate). From there, groups of riders proceed out and across HAAF, generally garnering miles and beyond. The tradition for this ride is to meet up at Starbucks (12 Oaks Shopping Center off Abercorn) for coffee and conversation afterwards. If you want to do this on a more-than-once basis, take your 30-day pass to building 1286 and get a one-year laminated pass takes about 15 minutes. Bonus: if you re environmentally conscious and care about recycling rather than filling up large holes in the Earth, HAAF accepts ALL forms of Coastal Bicycle Touring Club 4

5 recyclable materials, most notably glass. We all know that Savannah does not recycle glass, and we all know Savannah generates large amounts of recyclable glass. So if you ride on HAAF, you can recycle your glass on base and do your part to reduce landfill waste. Skidaway Island Ride An informal group of riders, some from The Landings and some from elsewhere, join together on Tuesday and Saturday mornings at the rear parking lot of the Skidaway Island Methodist Church. An early roll-out (6am) garners about miles, while the later roll-out (7:30am) garners about 30 miles. The unofficial leader of these rides is Professor John Jensen, who teaches ceramics at Armstrong (sorry, I cannot bring myself to call it Georgia Southern). JJ, as he is known, is a monster rider, frequently riding centuries in 4 hours - or 25mph with no stops. However, these rides include ride groups of all capabilities, the slowest averaging around 16-18mph. Bonus: if you get to know JJ, you will likely get to see some of his ceramic creations, or even perhaps take one of his classes. If you think he teaches students how to make planters, think again. Here are a couple of his works: The Pink Cupcake Ride Another informal (i.e., non-club sponsored) ride is the annual Pink Cupcake Ride. This ride was the creation of the aforementioned Professor John Jensen (aka JJ) and is held in January. It is not for the faint hearted, since the ride is twice the age of JJ, who is currently 68 years young. Starting and finishing in the Pooler Lowe s parking lot, the Pink Cupcake attracts the very best riders from the greater Savannah area. The main pace line averages around 24-25mph, while the mere mortal Coastal Bicycle Touring Club 5

6 riders leave about an hour earlier and average around 19-20mph. The 2019 Pink Cupcake will be held on 26 January, with the early roll-out at 7:45am and the main pace line departing at 9am. Oh, the standard Pink Cupcake length is a mere 120 miles, so only JJ and a few close friends ride the double-your-age length.
