2 50+ Years of Bicycle Sharing lets have a key milestones time travel: Back to the future 1965 Amsterdam PROVO White Bikes: Dutch initiative creates the so called Withe Bikes. But the program did not work for long and reflects the general peoples wish to have mobility on demand available anywhere easily. Features: Free floating, anonymous to use, fully trust based usage, no central data, no GPS GSM connectivity, mechanical lock with key number painted on the frame Issues: Bikes disappeared quickly vandalism and theft tracking difficult (impossible)!2

Start with 200 Bikes and 25 Stations. Features: User registration must be at office hours and station based, tracking of correct return, GPS GSM connectivity - locking to something will make it difficult for vandals to remove the bike and hang it on trees or throw it into rivers Issues: Vandalism when locked can not be traced to a suspect!6

Many other Cities installed similar programs around the globe the largest Hangzhou with 85k + bikes! Features: Station based, user registration and digital user card unlocking together with PIN for unlocking, tracking of correct return, GPS locking of speed and riding path. Issues: Only one kind of bike offered, no competition since systems are usually offered directly or indirectly by government programs!7

Maintenance of the bikes was difficult and expensive!8

The Idea is that the charging is hidden in the common user routine of locking the bike. Issues: Heavy lock cable, due to 2 sided solution (Locking device on the bike and the infrastructure high cost), no harmonized international standard jet!9

Features: universal low cost public infrastructure for parking space management of LEVs and Bicycles is described by IEC working group based on EU mandate 468 and 333. Key initiative for this solution by BMW Motorcycles and Unicorn Engineering. Issues: Industry, local governments and national/international law makers need to cooperate to implement such infrastructure successfully!10

Mobike operates approximately 6-8 Million sharing bikes Issues: Bikes are piling up quickly, citizens love the availability but as well struggle with loss of public space due to bikes piling up vandalism and theft tracking during parking mode difficult (impossible) Market tend to overheat due to severe competition.!11

Features: Station based, user registration and digital user card unlocking together with PIN for unlocking, tracking of correct return, GPS locking of speed and riding path. Issues: How to supply electricity (Battery Swapping, BYOBD, Charge lock Cable), Robustness and Maintenance,!14

18 The game changer: Profitable public transportation by rental pedelecs augmenting existing public transport options! Mainly since the made it already in the first year of operation to turn profitable it is getting global attention. The bikes made it to generate a monthly income of 178 Euro which did cover the costs and generated a little profit. And more income is feasible due to the options still hidden in the system.!18

19 When you did choose some touristic destination you could just switch into the navigation mode by pressing the Set as destination field.!19

20 Quite surprising to me was that it feels absolutely natural to operate such a touch menue while riding around copenhagen. Even I have not been in Copenhagen for about 12 years I have had all the time full understanding about where I was and where I need to go. This experience has convinced me absolutely that it is the right way to have smart vehicles and a simple parking and charging infrastructure. The Screen was easy to read even at direct sunshine like you can see on the picture. I learned form the company later that features like a Wlan hot spot for tourists will be added soon to the functionality.!20

22 I have had the next surprise after returning home and logging into the Bycyklen website and finding a exact map of my trip saved in my profile. This system has implemented many features like nobody else before - It is really raising the bar of the state of the art pedelec sharing systems.!22

23 One weakness of the GoBike system is the still proprietary parking infrastructure which neet to be completely financed by the rental income.!23

24 German City of Rostock opened a Pedelec rental system which is designed to enhance the public transport even the scale is quite limited with about 30 vehicles. But it is highly innovative and applying for the first time fully the non proprietary EnergyBus charging and communication interface which will allow in the future the roll out of the system with a mixture of different vehicles. The current pedelecs supplied by the german company Gobax have about 180 kg of payload which is a quite outstanding high value.!24
