2 Page 2 Safety Tip from Scott Warning Signs and Symptoms of Heat-Related Illness It is a good idea to be a little bit familiar with the basic symptoms and treatments for heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Unless you are trained in medicine the difference between the two may be somewhat ambiguous but just keep in mind that heatstroke is life threatening and heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke. So study the table and acquaint yourself with the symptoms so that you can identify what may be happening to yourself or to someone else around you. There are other good sources of information such as the Mayo Clinic website. Of course I am thinking in the context of a group ride on a day where you very well could have stayed home and roasted eggs on the sidewalk. I can tell you from experience that there is one common tell tale indicator to observe. If someone in a group ride goes from their normal self, say chatty, riding straight, keeping up and breathing normally to being humped over their handle bars, panting and showing other signs of distress then keep an eye on that person. Bicyclist can be never say die people and I have found that it is difficult to convince a heat distressed rider to get off the bike and find a way to cool down. Several years ago I was riding on a hot August day with a group when a young lady was obviously becoming distressed. She refused to stop even though it looked like she may just pass out and fall off any minute. Knowing something about her I reminded her that she had told me she had no health insurance. I went on to tell her that if we have to call an ambulance for her it would cost around a thousand dollars, not to mention the emergency room fees. The thought of these bills showing up in her mailbox broke through the fog of her distress and we pulled over. The point here is that you may need to use some negotiating skills to convince a fellow rider to stop so they can live to ride another day. The wider point is that in a group ride you are your brother s keeper. So keep an eye on each other and if you see trouble brewing, stop before it boils over.

5 Dates Social Hour June 22, 2017 Page 5 A lively group of DATES members converged on Ida Claire restaurant and bar in Addison for some drinks, appetizers such as fried green tomatoes and biscuits with pimento cheese, and of course lots of conversation. It was a special treat to have Brenda Cole in town for the event as well! Over the course of the evening, 24 DATES members attended and 6 even stayed on for dinner. The southern fare was delicious! Thanks for coming out and hope to see you all on the bikes soon!

6 Ride Report Loop the Lake Ride Thursday June 15 6:30 PM By Ernie Coose Page 6 Six of us took advantage of the setting sun and slightly cooler evening temperatures to take a spin around White Rock Lake. Evening rides around the lake are pretty comfortable even on hot days like this one. Bike-generated breezes add to those coming off the water, plus there s a fair amount of shaded riding as the sun s angle drops lower.

7 Page 7 Wide stretches on the trail offered the opportunity to catch up on the latest news from friends. On the narrower parts, we did some bell-ringing to alert dog walkers and slower cyclists who might veer into our flight pattern. We started from the Bath House. The upsides to this location are indoor plumbing and tree shade to prep your bike and park your car. However, tonight it turned out to be on the distant side of the lake from the homes of our participants. I m making a note to self for next time. The route was not complex. We went around once. Then we went around again. No cue sheets or Garmin files were distributed, but these were experienced tandem teams so as expected, none became lost. We rewarded ourselves afterwards with a visit to the Lake House Café, where the food is good, the beer is cold, and a little bike sweat does not offend. While there, we couldn t resist going outside to meet the Pedal with a Twist bike club as they were prepping for an after-sunset ride. They seemed to be having the best time just getting ready to ride, plus their bikes were the coolest. They all had Huffy cruisers in a rainbow of colors with LED rope lights strung through the spokes and around the wheels. We wished we had met them on the trail because they would have been a sight. Page 9 Southwest Missouri Tandem Rally 2017 Glenn Rudolph Barb and I attended our first Southwest Missouri Tandem Rally and have already put it on our 2018 calendar.

9 Page 9 Southwest Missouri Tandem Rally 2017 Glenn Rudolph Barb and I attended our first Southwest Missouri Tandem Rally and have already put it on our 2018 calendar. The three-day event was June 2-4 in Springfield. John and Jean White organized a great three days of riding, meals, and entertainment for 37 tandem couples with alternate routes each day to accommodate distances and ability. Barb and I also managed to sneak in a Thursday night ride with the Springfield Brewery Company race team that made for a fun additional 23 miles.

Page 10 The venue was at the Doubletree hotel, which was bargain at $99.00 a night including breakfast. Friday was a rolling start that offered multiple distances after rally check-in.

All the routes had ed downloadable GPS files and route sheets. We rolled out with four other teams and have an enjoyable 37 miles on smooth rolling country roads. The shorter routes removed some of the bigger hills, thus affording everyone a great ride. There was a rest stop at a convenient store half way and another at MacAdoodles Winery (mile 36) for tasting and any purchases included delivery to the hotel. Friday s dinner was on your own with almost everyone heading downtown to the Springfield Brewery Company, where reserved seating waiting for us.

11 Page 11 Saturday after breakfast, we had an 8:00am rollout from the hotel or you could shorten the route with a quick trip in the car to an alternate starting point. There was much to learn about the how the area played different roles in the settling of America and the regions role in the Civil War.

12 Page 12 The specialty rest stop of the day was at Andy s Frozen Custer (mile 63). Evening events included a presentation from Houston s House of Tandems, who supported us all weekend with excellent service. Followed by a happy hour, catered dinner at the hotel, and raffle prizes. Sunday s ride included more lightly traveled, excellent roads where we spotted lots of turtles, deer, and wild turkeys. There was no rush as we got back to the hotel in plenty of time and everyone to check out by noon. We concluded our weekend with our newfound friends with lunch at the Brewery before hitting the road and driving home. As always, we had had a great time, met new friends, caught up with some old friends, and got to do it all while riding our bikes. 13 Origin of the Pilot Point Ride Hosted by Mindy & Scott Mashburn Ride Report Addendum by Kevin Vinson Page 13 I wanted to take a moment to clarify some information I provided in my original ride report for the DATES/GDB Pilot Point Ride back in May. In my report I wasn t sure how or who originated the Pilot Point Ride. For Linda and me, we remember Chuck & Kris Carlson organizing the Pilot Point Ride years ago. After the release of the June edition of the DATES-Line Newsletter, Kris Carlson dropped me an stating that she thought it was Herb & Sandra Bloomer who started the DATES Pilot Point Ride. Kris was kind enough to send Herb & Sandra an getting clarification. Below is Herb s response. Many years ago we did a ride with Duane and Danita Neu where we went around Lake Ray Roberts stopped in Sanger for a rest stop and then after the ride we would go to Tioga for barbeque and pie! At some point we decided those roads had too much traffic and we came up with a different route which evolved through the years, Carroll Mayhew found some of the roads and Rick Dixon found us a hill to climb, so we started incorporating that section and we still call it Dixon hill. We were the first to lead the ride, but the route has been a group effort and Chuck added a neat loop to make it even better. As a side note to Herb s response, the barbeque restaurant in Tioga was Clark s Outpost. Linda and I loved Clark s Outpost. We were sad to discover that the restaurant had closed due to a fire. Just this past week we found out the restaurant is due to reopen this July. It s worth the drive for their barbeque and in particular, their barbeque sauce. Thank you to Herb for providing clarification on how the DATES Pilot Point Ride came about and thank you to Chuck & Kris for enhancing the route and leading it for so many years.
