Insert the title of your Electrically-assisted bikes: here apresentation way of mainstreaming cycling work? Presented to by Name Here Job Title - Date Sally Cairns, TRL & UCL, 12th June 2013
3 year project funded by Research Councils UK Energy (EPSRC) Project team: University of Brighton (lead) Frauke Behrendt (Media Studies) Chris Kiefer (Computer Science) Transport Research Laboratory Sally Cairns Clare Harmer Marcus Jones University of Ulster David Raffo (Architecture and Design)
Other project partners Local Authority Industry Employees & Community Groups
Fleet of 35 smart e-bikes Phone/website to display and share ride data Smart E-bike Monitoring System real-time usage & sensor data Data analysis Motor Battery Switch for optional assistance
2012 trial Bupa International 660 employees in Brighton, across 2 sites General survey to assess staff interest Bikes lent to 41 employees, across 2 phases (June/July and Sept/Oct) Participants received: - Loan of bike for 6-8 weeks - Bikeability training (to level 3, with extra e-bike component) - Helmet, lights, lock, pannier, pump - Bike shop support - Researcher support
Monitoring framework Smart e-bike monitoring system Surveys Interviews (short and long) Videofootage, and participant observation Fieldnotes
Surveys undertaken at Bupa International Survey sent to all employees. Survey 1: Full staff survey 226 responses Survey 2: Gauging interest 111 responses Survey 3: phase 1 22 responses Survey 4: phase 1 20 responses At the end of Survey 2, 38% of all respondents (87 people) were still interested in borrowing a bike. Survey 3: phase 2 21 responses 41 people borrowed bikes Survey 4: phase 2 20 responses Also, participant 41, who had never ridden a bike before!
Research questions Can electrically-assisted bikes appeal to a wider range of people than conventional bikes? Would having an electrically-assisted bike available encourage people to cycle more?
Number of bicycle trips per person per year Who was interested in borrowing a bike - gender Male Female Number of respondents 1 UK National Travel Survey data Bupa survey respondents % 37% 20 0 Male Female All respondents Interested in borrowing a bike From the first survey, 41% men and 37% women replying were interested in being part of the trial.
Opinions of those who borrowed bikes: % of respondents In the coming month, approximately how many days per week would you expect to commute to work by bike? Zero days 2 days Without an e-bike 4 days With an e-bike The proportion of participants saying they would cycle to work at least one day a week increased from 30% to 75% if they had an e-bike available.
When I started as a member of the steering group for this project, I was somewhat sceptical about the health benefits of electric bicycles. However, having now tried different versions of these bikes, and having learned from the project data and European experts on the steering group, I am now in no doubt that these bikes have a health enhancing role. The bikes require the rider to pedal at all times and they are likely to provide at least moderate levels of physical activity for most people. Use of such bikes will therefore be of potential health benefit to all those who need to increase their levels of physical activity, and who use them in preference to undertaking less active types of travel or activity. In addition, there are certain groups where there may be particularly substantial benefits, such as those who find conventional cycling or other forms of exercise unappealing; or who would value the time savings from being able to combine travel and activity; or who find the hills around their neighbourhood off-putting. Nanette Mutrie, Professor of Physical Activity for Health, University of Edinburgh.
