2 Team Somerset was founded in 1936 as Somerset Wheelmen by Pop Kugler, and has been pedaling fast and furious ever since. This Central New Jersey based team has grown to regularly include more than 75 members per year. Team Somerset s mission is to promote the sport of bicycle racing and riding; to provide a nurturing, supportive organization to develop and enhance the talents of cyclists of any age and gender to reach their athletic potential; and, to foster and maintain the framework for members to represent the sport of bicycle racing and riding on a local, regional, state, national and international level. Jerseys are worn in competition, training, and during other events throughout the year. Team Somerset regularly communicates with members and the cycling community through broadcasts, and our website. Team Somerset, through its racing and community interaction, is a well known and respected organization. 3 TEAM SOMERSET ON THE ROAD Team Somerset is among the most active New Jersey bicycle race teams, with member activities encompassing the entire range of the sport from the heart-throbbing, adrenaline-pumping action of racing, to long distance endurance and recreational fund raising rides. Even though Team Somerset is based in Central New Jersey, members often travel throughout the United States, and internationally, to enjoy and participate in cycling events. Many of Team Somerset s members enjoy participating in challenging fund raiser centuries (100 mile rides), and touring. Most of our members are competitive bicycle racers who use cycling to strengthen and supplement their fitness. Others are involved for fitness, or for the camaraderie of the Team. Team Somerset is a recognized team of the United States Cycling Federation (USCF), an association of the national governing body for competitive cycling, USA Cycling. Many members are current or former racers of varying disciplines (Road, Track, Mountain Bike & Cyclocross), and categorization. Team Somerset s strong supportive racing program, has produced numerous State, National, and International Champions. Whatever the goals, Team Somerset welcomes additional member growth, works to accommodate all member needs, and provides opportunities for members to enjoy cycling, and improve their health & fitness. TEAM SOMERSET IN THE COMMUNITY Team Somerset members have been, and continue to be, involved in activities and events that strengthen cycling and the community. Every year Team Somerset organizes one of the largest and well known USCF sanctioned races in the area, The New Jersey State Masters Road Race Championship, and the Somerset Circuit Individual Time Trial, a pivotal event in the New Jersey State Individual Time Trial Cup Championship. Junior Racing and Development Program For 2009, Team Somerset will be expanding its junior development program. The team will offer structured, coached training for younger riders, to help them develop the skills needed for racing. Additionally, we will offer skills clinics, an easy to follow training plan and lesson plans each week. Coaching will be by USAC (USA Cycling) accredited coaches. New riders will be recruited through local schools, as well as township/county programs for rider development. In addition to fostering a competitive spirit in younger riders, we will focus on teamwork, achieving goals, healthy nutrition and basic exercise physiology. The Team Somerset junior development program is an important part of growing New Jersey s U19 racing program.
