4 Learn to Ride - Adult Cycle Training Learn to Ride is a high quality cycle training course offered FREE of charge to all residents aged over 18 years, who hold a Birmingham City Council Leisure Card and live in Birmingham. Learn to Ride follows the National Standards cycle training course guidelines and delivers training for cyclists of all skill levels from complete beginners to cyclists wishing to ride on road amongst traffic. There are two Learn to Ride courses available. Level 1 The Level 1 sessions are for people to improve their riding control skills and can include teaching people to pedal. These sessions are delivered on traffic free training sites. Level 2 Level 2 courses are aimed at cyclists who can demonstrate they can ride to a proficient Level 1 standard. A cyclist must be able to competently ride and control their bike before they are admitted on to a level 2 course. These are on road sessions. Don t forget... 5 Join the Revolution Birmingham Cycle Revolution is making cycling a more commonplace form of transport and recreation in Birmingham; making our city less congested, greener, safer and healthier. We will: n Improve cycling conditions on popular routes into the city centre; n Provide quiet cycling routes and 20mph speed limits making it safer to cycle; n Upgrade towpaths on canals providing pleasant off-road cycle paths; n Develop new cycling routes through parks and green open spaces; n Provide new secure cycle parking hubs; and n Develop cycle loan and hire schemes. birminghamcycle 8 9
6 Ride Active FREE Ride Active is a partnership between British Cycling and Big Birmingham Bikes aimed at providing fun social cycling practice activities for adults (aged 16+) initially in safe secure environments such as parks and multi-use games areas. 9 Short Term (Day) Loans FREE Brompton Bike Hire Short term bike loans are available to adults with a Birmingham City Council Leisure Card. At centres where we have staff, bikes will be available to hire for the day, for FREE (subject to availability). To access the short term loans take your leisure card to your nearest participating centre with proof of identification and recent proof of address. With this the staff will be able to activate the Big Birmingham Bikes membership. You will be required to sign a Hire Agreement, and after this you will be able to use the dayhire service for free. You must present your Leisure Card every time you wish to borrow a bike. Bikes must be returned by the time specified by that centre, which will usually be around one hour before the centre closes. These bikes may not be kept overnight. Bikes will be issued on a one bike per membership basis. From as little as 2.50 a day, you can hire a folding bike. These are available from five Brompton Docks located around Birmingham City Centre: Outside Moor Street Station entrance Opposite Snow Hill Station entrance (Colmore Row) On New Street (by the junction with Corporation Street) Aston University Brindleyplace (Oozells Street) A Brompton is the perfect bike for the city. It folds down to a portable, practical size; so can be taken on trains and buses or folded into the boot of your car for longer journeys. Once registered and reserved, your bike can be collected from any of the 5 docks in Birmingham. Then you can use it to ride to work, to travel between meetings and store in your home. You can keep the bike for as long as you need it, simply reserve a bay and return it to any public dock once you are done. 10 Inclusive Cycling Big Birmingham Bikes Wheels for All Birmingham City Council is proud to be working in partnership with Cycling Projects Wheels for All to develop a Wheels for All Centre for people with disabilities or differing needs across the city. It is FREE to attend, so please come along and be part of this exciting opportunity. Try out a wide range of adapted cycles (with the support from CP staff) Find out about potential training available Learn how to get involved as a volunteer or sponsor Sessions are held every Tuesday. 11 COMING SOON! Modeshift STARS is the national schools awards scheme that has been established to recognise schools that have demonstrated excellence in supporting cycling, walking and other forms of sustainable travel. The scheme encourages schools across the country to join in a major effort to increase levels of sustainable and active travel in order to improve the health and well-being of children and young people. Every school in England can participate in Modeshift STARS for free. On completion of an application for Modeshift STARS, schools will automatically have a brand new national standard School Travel Plan. For further information please contact mandi.slater@birmingham.gov.uk PHASE TWO Summer 2017 will see Big Birmingham Bikes move to Phase Two whereby the project will offer a range of activities and events aimed at families and those with young children as well as all the services currently on offer. There will be a new Free Bike Give Away aimed at encouraging families to cycle together, as well as a Bike Banks Lending Scheme for children aged 4-15 years. 12 TERMS & CONDITIONS and some important and helpful advice! FREE Short-term Hire Bikes 1. You will need to sign a Hire Agreement (copies are available on our website and at all Cycle Centre s where short-term loans are available). Before booking a bike, please also take proof of address to the Wellbeing Centre e.g. utility bill no older than 3 months. 2. Under 18s can only hire a bike with their parents/guardians. 3. Bikes can only be hired for the day and must be returned before the Cycle Centre closes. FREE Learn to Ride Training years and over only. 2. We strongly advise that you purchase a helmet prior to taking part. 3. Up to 4 FREE sessions will be offered and we require that you commit to attend on a regular basis. The number of sessions offered will depend on your requirements. FREE Led Rides Ride Bookings & Bike Hire 1. Booking is essential to ensure that ride leader: participant ratios are correct. 2. Leisure Card number is required for booking. 3. An emergency contact name and number is also required. 4. Please arrive 20 minutes before the ride start time. Late arrival may prevent you taking part in the ride. 5. Any rides not designated on the programme as Family Friendly are open to individuals over 13 years old as long as they are capable of completing the ride. 6. Under 16 s must be accompanied by an adult and a Consent form must be signed by the under 16 s parent/guardian. 7. Bikes are available to hire for most of our rides. If you wish to hire a bike for a ride please book early to avoid disappointment. (Booking a place on a ride does not include a hire bike booking.) 8. Book a bike directly with the relevant centre. Get Set 9. Appropriate clothing and footwear should be worn for rides, taking into account weather conditions and that there will be some time spent stationary before and during the ride. (Specialist cycle clothing is not necessary.) 10. All bicycles used in the led ride must: a) Be in good working order; b) Have two brakes that work, or are fitted with a front brake if a fixed wheel bike; c) Be an appropriate size to allow the rider to participate safely in the session; d) Be appropriate to the environment, surface conditions and activity. 11. All bikes will be checked by ride leaders before departure. 12. Consent forms must be completed by all participants the first time they attend a Big Birmingham Bikes ride. 13. Participants under 16 years old must have their forms signed by a parent or guardian. 14. Any participants under the age of 16 are required to wear a suitable helmet. Other participants are strongly advised to wear helmets. 15. High visibility clothing participants are strongly advised to wear highvis clothing, particularly on rides which include roads. Day of the Ride 16. All Ride Leaders have received training by a nationally recognised cycle body. Riders are asked to listen and follow instruction from all ride leaders. 17. In the event of ride cancellation, participants will be notified at the earliest possible instance. 18. If a participant wishes to leave the ride before it reaches the finish they must communicate this to the Ride Leader
