2 «The cyclo-sportive phenomenon» On your bikes! In its own way, discretely, the bicycle is incessantly gaining ground. The time now appears long-gone when the bicycle was almost a by-word for old-fashioned. Today, it genuinely symbolises modernity, thanks to the diverse range of its uses. From the hurried city-dweller using a bike-share scheme two-wheeler, to the amateur cyclist who covers several hundred kilometres per week, each and everyone can find what they are looking for on a bicycle. It is an ideal leisure and nature activity for families seeking out bucolic rides; it is the dream sport for those who want a cardio work-out without risking damage to their joints; it is even a trend for those wishing to adopt a vision of the world that is respectful of the environment. An authentic French passion for two wheels! French cyclists now account for millions of the population. On roads or tracks, they roam across France as their moods and leanings take them and according to their level of proficiency. On 7 th July, of them will experience the adventure of the Tour de France between Annecy and Annecy-Semnoz. The phenomenon of cyclo-sportive events, of which the Etape du Tour is probably the most spectacular symbol, is proof of a desire to enjoy sport in a friendly manner, because cycling in addition to the type of effort it encourages is also a discipline that promotes a certain way of living together: riding with family, riding with friends; everyone at their own pace but with nobody left out get on your bikes!. 3 «A.S.O. cyclo-sportive Events» The other events organised as part of the 100 th edition of the Tour de France The «Nice Fête le Tour» time-trial On 30 th June, amateur cyclists will be able to test their mettle on the (95% identical) route that the professionals will take several days later during the fourth stage of the Tour de France The start, from the official ramp of Le Tour, and the finish of this time-trial will take place on the Promenade des Anglais. The roads will be fully closed to traffic and cordoned off all along the 24.5 km. Participants can register individually (for the price of 29 euros) or as part of a team (116 euros). The last kilometre of the Nice Fête le Tour time-trial will be subject to special timing. The Finishers Challenge will see a jersey awarded to the quickest competitor over the last portion of the route. Individual classifications for men, women and the best young riders and team classifications will be established. On completion of the event, an awards ceremony will be held to present the prizes and leaders jerseys on the podium at the Nice Fête le Tour Village. More information on The Randonnée du Tour On 21 st July, the Randonnée du Tour will allow 5,000 cycling enthusiasts the opportunity to enjoy a magnificent ride through Paris. This ride is open to all from the age of 10 and above and is a fitting part of the festivities surrounding the 100 th edition of Le Tour. The loop-shaped 6.9-km long route will pass through some of the French capital s most emblematic sites. Starting on Avenue Foch then Place Charles-de-Gaulle, it continues along Avenue des Champs-Elysées, Place de la Concorde, Quai des Tuileries, the tunnel on Avenue du Général-Lemonnier, Rue de Rivoli, Place de la Concorde, Avenue des Champs-Elysées and Place Charles-de-Gaulle before finishing on Avenue Foch. The starts will commence from 2:30 pm. The registration fee for this ride is 5 euros. The takings will be donated in full to the Mécénat Chirurgie Cardiaque (MCC) and HandicapZéro charities. The Tour de France aims to involve as many cyclists as possible, of all ages and all levels, in the finish to its 100 th edition, as well as promoting cycling in its most friendly and family-orientated format. 4 «Etape du Tour Presentation» 128 km et 3,600 m de elevation gain! The 21 st edition of the Etape du Tour boasts a lively 128-km route: a genuine route for tough customers with a sequence of difficulties that will hurt the riders legs and delight amateur cyclists who enjoy sustained efforts. Based on the penultimate stage of the one hundredth edition of Le Tour, the Etape du Tour 2013 starts in Annecy and finishes in Annecy-Semnoz. The elevation gain totals 3,600 metres. In succession the participants will have to tackle the Côte de Puget slope (5.4 km, 5.8% gradient), the Col de Leschaux pass (3.6 km, 6.2% gradient), the Côte de Aillons-le-Vieux slope (6 km, 4% gradient) and the Col des Prés pass (3.5 km, 6.5% gradient). The last two difficulties will be more difficult to overcome: the Mont-Revard climb first of all (16 km, 5.4% gradient) before the final ascension to Semnoz (11 km, 8.5% gradient). More nervous than the Mont Ventoux (11 km instead of 19), this climb is often compared to the Giant of Provence. In good conditions, a rider needs to have a solid constitution to climb it. On 7 th July, the participants in the Etape du Tour will be riding through the heart of the Bauges National Park. Covering a significant part of the Savoy area, this natural park is one of the most authentically preserved parts of the Alps. Loyal to its tradition, the Etape du Tour will immerse itself for several days in the heart of a French region, with the fortune this year of staying for three days on the shores of the magnificent Lake Annecy.

5 «Interview» Three questions for the Mayor of Annecy : «I ll be experiencing the Etape du Tour from the inside!» By hosting the Etape du Tour, does the town of Annecy wish to display its fondness for cycling? Annecy is very naturally located in a land of cycling, with something for everyone: touring cycling around the purest lake in Europe or through the Semnoz a haven of green for Annecy s inhabitants; for mountain bikers, demanding courses delight amateur riders and those of our two clubs, the Vélo Club d'annecy (with 200 members) and Annecy Cyclisme Compétition (150 members); as well as cycling lanes and tracks more than 40 km within the town enabling development of daily travel by bicycle as a genuine alternative to the car. What are you hoping for from the event on 7 th July? After the Tour Party organised on 15 th June, to celebrate the 100 th edition of the Tour de France, the Etape du Tour will be an opportunity for us to give a worthy launch to the summer season in Annecy. From the Noctibules festival of performing arts until the famous firework display as part of the Lake Festival on Saturday 3 rd August, there will be a whole sequence of sporting and cultural events to delight Annecy s inhabitants and visitors. With the visit of the Etape du Tour and the Tour de France, it s obvious that the month of July 2013 will most certainly be cycling-focused! Annecy is expecting 40,000 people and everything is ready to welcome our visitors in the best conditions. It s a veritable challenge that Annecy s tourism professionals are ready to meet to make sure everyone wants to return to Annecy again! As a member of the French canoeing team for ten years, you are an accomplished sportsman. Will you be taking part in the Etape du Tour? The idea of taking part in the Etape du Tour has given rise to a veritable competition at the Town Hall, among the members of staff but also among the elected representatives, including Gilles Bernard with whom I had the pleasure of winning three canoe-kayak World Champion titles. 6 «The village Programme» The Etape du Tour village: Three days beside the lake Traditionally, the Etape du Tour village is a reflection of the world of cycling: friendly, festive and sporty. This year, for a three-day period, it will take on an extra tourist dimension due to the beauty of Lake Annecy: it is difficult to imagine a more romantic setting! The participants in the Etape du Tour, their friends and family or simply visitors to the town will be able to visit the stands and talk with the officials and technicians in attendance. The Village, from which the race numbers can be collected, will be an opportunity for amateur cyclists of all levels and more than 50 nationalities to come together. For those who wish to admire the landscape of the Venice of the Alps, relaxation areas will also be set up. The Village Gourmand (gourmet village) will be open to participants in the Etape du Tour as well as their family and friends, with the aim of combining the pleasures of sporting exploits and fine dining. Cheese will of course hold pride of place in the Village set up on the shores of Lake Annecy, but other products will also enjoy the spotlight: delicatessen meats, polenta, crozets (Alpine pasta) and even wines and liqueurs from the mountain pastures. 7 «Behind the scenes of the Etape du Tour» Savoy at the refreshment points For the very first time, the Etape du Tour will this year be providing regional products at each of its three full refreshment points. Throughout their efforts which generally last more than five hours the competitors feel the need to replenish their energy with other foodstuffs than sweet products. In particular, they will be able to taste the Tome des Bauges, a cheese typical of the Massif des Bauges Mountains which has had an AOC/Appellation d Origine Contrôlée (protected designation of origin) since Volunteers : without them, nothing would be possible! This year again, the volunteers will occupy a place of central importance in the organisation of the Etape du Tour. From handing out race numbers to giving out refreshments at the finish, they will help the riders before and during their efforts. 500 of them will be posted along the route in order to carry out the essential task of signalling. 250 other volunteers will help to ensure the smooth running of the Village over a period of three days. On completion of the Etape du Tour, they will distribute medals to the finishers. Nothing would be possible without these men and women who give their time so that this grand cycling festival can be a success. Taking part in a race in France is always really challenging because Great Britain does not have mountains like yours. But they have a burning desire to push their limits. Cycling is a mixed sport, especially in Great Britain. Could you tell us what Rapha is aiming for with the Women's 100 operation? Next July 7, the day of the Etape du Tour, we are calling upon all the women on Earth who like cycling to ride 100 kilometres, regardless of how strong they are and where they live.
