2 Report o 48 Site Specific Highway Details Description of character of the highway: The C35 commences to the west of Shildon, at the junction with the A6072 West Auckland Road and the U42.3 Brusselton Lane. The C35 travels east through Shildon and Middridge, before travelling north past ewton Aycliffe to Rushyford, where it terminates at the junction with the A689. Locally, the C35 Middridge Lane commences at the eastern outskirts of Middridge, at a point 88m west of the U42.10 Walker s Lane junction midpoint and travels east towards ewton Aycliffe, for a distance of 440m. The C35 is a single carriageway 6.2m wide, comprising of one lane in either direction. Heading in an easterly direction from the U42.10 Walker s Lane junction midpoint, the horizontal alignment comprises of a left-hand bend between LC145 and LC143, a right-hand bend between LC143 and LC139 and a straight section between LC139 and LC132. The vertical alignment in an easterly direction is relatively flat; however there is an uphill gradient between LC140 and LC139 with a blind summit. Blind summit warning signs are located either side of the summit; at a point 20m east of LC141 (for eastbound traffic) and at a point 9m east of LC133 (for westbound traffic). The footway provision to the south of the carriageway varies in width between 1.1m to 1.6m. The footway is segregated form the carriageway by a grass verge of varying width from LC140 to LC137 and LC135 to LC132. To the north of the carriageway is verge. A public right of way adjoins the C35 Middridge Lane from the north of the carriageway, 12m east of LC132. Pedestrians are required to cross the carriageway at this location to access the footway located on the other side of the road, or to access the Byerley Park Local ature Reserve. The C35 Middridge Lane is a bus route; an east and westbound bus stop are located near the residential property of 11 Middridge Farm. The site is subject to the national speed limit. Rumble strips and SLOW@ road markings are present on the westbound approach into Middridge. On this section of carriageway the road markings are in serviceable condition. The terminal speed limit signs are not in serviceable condition. Description of environment of the highway: The land to the north and south of the carriageway is rural / agricultural. Specific / local knowledge comments relating to site and its environment: Historic concerns about speeding through Middridge. Historic request to reduce speed limit between Middridge and Blue Bell corner junction, but this did not accord with the DfT criteria for setting local speed limits. Page 2 of 9
