2 INTRODUCTION TO PROJECT The purpose: to construct a multi-purpose path, which will connect two existing bike and pedestrian paths The scope: the area along the south side of Boland Drive between Riverside Drive and Portage Avenue, a location that runs parallel to Pinhook Lake The elements: a cantilevered bridge in areas of steep decline to the lake, a recreational overlook, and a shared path sidewalk along Boland Drive The end goal: to encourage biking and walking as alternative forms of transportation for motorists.

3 BIKE THE BEND Bicycle Friendly Community Status Top ranked in Indiana City Plan of 2006 includes a Bicycle Plan outlining how the City will address encouraging bicycling as a form of alternate transportation Bike South Bend Long-term 103-mile bike plan Beneficial for individuals and community at large Reduction in congestion and delays on roadways, lower emissions from gasoline-powered vehicles, reduction in maintenance costs for roadways, amplified interest in the recreational area

10 STRUCTURAL SYSTEM Combination of Piles into Lakebed and cantilevered supports from bank Outlook area will require more piles into lakebed Transitions from sidewalk on Boland to path on lake will require supports into bank with varying degrees of cantilever effect Geological properties of the area currently unknown Exact survey data also unknown

18 SUMMARY Location: the south side of Boland Drive in the area between Riverside Drive and Portage Avenue Components: a bridge portion along Pinhook Lake, an overlook, and a sidewalk running parallel to Boland Drive Structure: a combination of cantilevered and piles Material: a concrete deck with wood paneling Use: a bike and pedestrian path, as well as a recreational center due to the overlook and benches

19 CONCLUSION We are confident that our design and construction of the Boland Drive Multi-Use Pathway between Portage Avenue and Riverside Drive will enhance the local area. The path, which will comply with regional standards and accommodate all bicycle and pedestrian users, will fit in nicely with the City s Comprehensive Plan. As such, J.A.M.M.P. would be honored to be an integral part of the Boland Drive Path Project.
