3 Team UniSA-Australia A modern, vibrant and innovative university, UniSA is proud of its 13-year association with the Santos Tour Down Under and its support for the development of young Australian riders through Team UniSA-Australia. The event is a great fit for UniSA it s about team work, individual performance and excellence but it is also about participation, not just for Australian professional cyclists but also for all the locals who are spectators and for those who ride in the Bupa Challenge Tour. Rohan Dennis securing the King of the Mountain jersey in 2012 Team UniSA-Australia riders have turned in some thrilling performances over the years including an exciting Stage 2 win by Will Clarke in In the same year, South Australian rider Rohan Dennis earned the overall King of the Mountain and Young Rider jerseys. This comes after fellow South Australian Luke Roberts secured the King of the Mountain jersey while riding with Team UniSA-Australia in Other memorable victories have included the Teams classification in 2004 and 2006, an overall win for Patrick Jonker in 2004, Karl Menzies overall runner-up position in 2007, and a down to the wire second place overall for Allan Davis in the 2008 race. Team UniSA-Australia will again be the team to watch for Australian cycling talent. Riding his third consecutive year with Team UniSA-Australia, Tasmanian Bernard Sulzberger will lead the group of young exciting riders. 4 Team UniSA-Australia Welcome message Each year, we never quite know how Team UniSA-Australia will perform in the Santos Tour Down Under against the UCI World Tour teams. But, I ve yet to see a year in which our team of generally young, unsigned riders do not put in a tremendous effort. The aggression of the team has become its hallmark along with a sense that anything is possible and that it s worth having a go. Increasingly we not only have talented athletes in the team but young men who are mature and ambitious with an undeniable passion for the sport and a real sense of pride in being selected to represent Australia in this international cycling event. Patrick Jonker Team UniSA-Australia Ambassador Having ridden with Team UniSA-Australia three times and winning it for the team in 2004, I have experienced the mateship and determination within this team. Our riders do not have the luxury of riding with each other all year long. They come together for a week and under the ever-steady leadership of team manager Dave Sanders, they put in a determined and courageous effort. One of the most inspirational rides I have seen in the Tour came from young Will Clarke last year when he rode out in front of the peloton for almost the entire Stirling stage, and held on to win. We expect another group of inspirational young Australians to ride with us in 2013, names you will no doubt become familiar with over the coming years as they earn a reputation in professional cycling. If I wasn t a cyclist I would be Greenwith SA 186cm / 68kg Central Districts Cycling Club GreenEdge Scott Foil 250km / 104km/h Bronze medal in the under 23 World Championships time trials in To try to win the rainbow jersey in the time trial championships and to sign a professional contract. First time Nothing too specific, it s about preparing for the road nationals in the weeks before and then transferring that onto TDU. I have to wear a brand new pair of socks before time trials. Nothing, just a coffee. Not too hot, not too cold. Music I look up to everyone in the race, it s going to be inspiring. Damien Howson Enjoy it and the hard work will pay off. I have been training fairly hard since mid November and have done a few races in January to get myself into some form such as Bay Crits, Herald Sun Tour and nationals. I like to have pasta as my pre-race food and generally listen to some music to pump myself up. Either a croissant or Danish. 25C and sunny. Sitting by a pool or getting a massage. I look up to a lot of the Aussie riders as most of them seem to be good genuine blokes on and off the bike. Ones to watch out for will be Cameron Meyer, Simon Gerrans and Andrea Guardini to name a few. Just to make sure they stay safe on the roads and most of all have fun. Working a full time day job. If I wasn t a cyclist I would be Zak Girona, Spain (during season). Nope. First one. Lots of riding! Obviously with specific workouts from my trainer to prepare myself for race situations. I average between km per month and last year I completed 33,500km. Matt Hayman is definitely one of Australia s most underrated riders I think, he s so consistent and such an asset to whichever team he s riding for. Simon Gerrans is also a great role model. Incorporate cycling into your socialising, go on bunch rides, stop for coffee and cake. Don t take it too seriously that you forget what s enjoyable about it. Working in sports science.
