1 MaCKRO News Publisher Mike Sproul: (207) , 468 Old Portland Rd, Brunswick, ME Editor John Cangelosi: Message from the President As I write this it is still February and I have four more ski races scheduled this winter, however, it is 40 degrees today with rain and no snow on the ground. It seems a lot more like paddling weather than skiing weather. In fact I know several folks who have been out paddling already. Hopefully we can get some snow or at least rain in March for the upcoming paddle racing season. Before we know it the first boats will be lining up for the start of the St. George! It has been a busy winter season for the executive committee, standing committees, and many other MaCKRO members from helping out with the Bangor YMCA Outing Cub program, organizing the ACA Collegiate Race Series Northeast Championship, preparing the 2012 race schedule among other things to get ready for the upcoming paddling and racing season. I did not realize how much work is involved prior to the start of the racing season. Committee folks have been doing a great job in getting ready for upcoming season. Makes my job a whole lot easier! It looks like another great paddle racing season. Finally, the Maine paddling community lost a legend member this winter. Earl Baldwin was not only a legend in Maine but was well known outside of Maine for his passion and dedication to the sport of paddling. We will miss Earl but his Baldwin boats and paddling sprit and inspiration will still be with us. So when you get out on the water this year remember Earl and.. PADDLE HARD! 3 Points for Flatwater Series: FLATWATER SCHEDULE Chairperson Colleen Moore Last year, points were awarded for attendance; one point per race. I m proposing the same with one slight change: if a member has attended at least one other series race, he/she may get point for going to Flatwater Nationals. Attendance at Nationals should be encouraged and participants should not be penalized for NOT showing up at a scheduled series race, one of which falls on the Thursday of Flatwater Nationals. The Sundowner will also count as a series race. Flatwater Series Races are scheduled as follows: June 21: Waterville, 6:30 p.m. start. Contact Don Wescott, June 28: Bowdoinham, 6:30 p.m. start (C-2 Round Robin). Contact Colleen Moore, July 12: Waterville, same as Waterville above. July 19: Orono, 5:30 p.m. Sprints; 6:30 p.m. marathon. Contact Jeff Owen, July 26: Houlton, 6:30 p.m. Contact Fred Ludwig, August 2: Sundowner, Skowhegan. 6:00. Contact John Alsop at johnalsop@beeline-online.net August 9: Waterville, same as Waterville above August 16: Orono, 5:30 Sprints & 6:30 Marathon, same as Orono above. C-1/K-1 CHAMPIONSHIPS!! August 23: Orono, 5:30 Sprints & 6:30 Marathon, same as above. C-2/K-2 CHAMPIONSHIPS with an awards/recognition ceremony in Orono to follow immediately afterward. FLATWATER RACING NEWS Round Robin Race Planned Chairperson Colleen Moore What s a Round Robin race? The race is a series race planned for Thursday evening, June 28 in Bowdoinham. It involves C-2s. Every person who shows up will race a short race, perhaps even a long sprint, with every other person who shows up. Times accumulate and the person with the fastest combined time wins. This allows paddlers to paddle with partners they may otherwise never get to paddle with and gives those among us who don t often make it to the winners podium to stand a chance. If so many people show up that it becomes unreasonable to race with everyone, there are ways to limit the number of times we race and still keep it fair and fun. My hope is that, at the end of the race, food will be provided on site (for a separate donation to cover the cost). This will allow us to refuel after the race as well as to socialize before we all head home. Please note that this race is still being formulated and details may change, so check the web site beforehand. Meanwhile, save the date and if you own a C-2, please bring it. Kayakers will be provided a regular long course. Detailed information on each race can be found at PAGE 3

5 Remembering Earl Baldwin By Dan Baumert Anyone who has been associated with paddle racing in Maine probably knows of Earl Baldwin. Since his recent passing a lot has been written and stories told of his long and wonderful life. Being relatively new to Maine I have only been racing for about ten years and only really got to know Earl in the past eight years or so. Over the relatively few years I knew Earl I learned more and more of the endless contributions he made to the paddling community in Maine and beyond. Whether it was building Baldwin Boat Co. kayaks, organizing and coordinating races, serving as various officer positions for MaCKRO, introducing Dick Hanson to the sport of paddle racing, or teaching his grand children how to roll a kayak, Earl contributed to the sport of paddling for well over 60 years. Wherever Earl raced he was well known whether it was the St. George in Maine, the USCA Flatwater Nationals in Pennsylvania, or the Mayors Cup in New York City. But it is the stories that I will remember most about Earl and I am sure many folks have their own personal favorite Earl story. For myself it has to be the Lower Dead River race several years ago. Earl, John Carter and myself were the only three kayaks that started the race and about half way down I capsized and lost my paddle. So I eventually ended up on a white water raft with my boat being towed by the sweep boat. Just after going through Poplar Falls I noticed Earl on the left stream bank not only without a paddle but without a boat as well. He was still some distance from the finish line which would have been a long walk. The raft left me off about ½ mile short of the finish line and when I looked upstream I noticed what appeared to be my orange kayak in the water with a paddler that appeared to be Earl because of the white helmet and yellow life jacket he typically would wear. As he got closer I confirmed it was Earl, however, he was paddling with a canoe paddle since that is all that was available in the sweep boat. John Carter eventually retrieved Earl s boat and when Earl crossed the finish line in my kayak with a canoe paddle John commented I gotta hear this story. Of course it was later told that was probably the first time in the history of the Dead that someone got beat by their own boat (myself) and someone finished in a different boat than what they started in (Earl). Ever since then when I would be at a race in that same orange kayak I would offer to trade boats with Earl. But I knew darn well that he would never be caught in any other boat than a Baldwin in any race! Seeing Earl in an Old Town kayak at the Dead that year was a rare event. I went to visit Earl about a month before his passing and even in his failing health he still had nearly 3 hours of stories to tell. Even though he knew his racing days were over he was still hopeful of at least going to races to watch. Earl had a great run and participated in the sport of paddling right up to his passing. (Continued next page)! PAGE 5

6 Remembering Earl Baldwin Below is a photo of Earl in the Mayors Cup race in October of 2008 when it was so rough that the Coast Guard shut the race down. This was one of Earl s favorite photos and was featured on the cover the USCA Canoe News magazine. We will all miss Earl s physical presence on the water. However, his presence will still be felt in any Baldwin boat that continues to be raced and especially in the memories and all those Earl stories that will always be with us. Thank You MaCKRO contributed $100 to the Hall Descendants Endowment Fund in memory of Earl Baldwin. Following is the thank you note MaCKRO received from the Baldwin Family; February 23, 2012 Dear Friends of MaCKRO, It is with great appreciation that we have received your contribution of $100 to all the Hall Descendants Endowment Fund in memory of Earl Baldwin. Your donation will enable the descendents of Elijah and Dorothy Winslow Hall to insure the continuing care of the historic burial ground for many generations to come. Ellen R. Campbell, Treasurer! 7 Bangor Y Outdoor Adventure Club The Bangor YMCA initiated an outdoor adventure club this year that is intended to include several activities throughout year. One of the activities is paddling. MaCKRO was asked to assist with the canoe portion of the paddling activity. 7 session have been scheduled which started on Feb 12 and will continue through March 25. All sessions are from 2:00 to 4:30 at the Bangor Y pool. Later March sessions may be moved to actual streams depending on conditions. There are approximately 10 participants for the canoe sessions. A kayak session is also being provided that also has approximately 10 participants. The kayak portion is being taught by a group of white water kayak enthusiasts. Up to 10 MaCKRO members have volunteered to help out with the canoe instructions. This is a great opportunity for nearly 20 new and more experienced paddlers to improve their paddling and racing skills. It is also a good exposure for MaCKRO and should result in some new members! Thanks to all MaCKRO members who have volunteered to help and especially Greg Dorr and Eric Taylor who been doing a lot of the detailed training coordination. ACA Collegiate Race Series Northeast Championship MaCKRO in conjunction with the Waldo County YMCA and the ACA have set up the ACA Collegiate (White Water Paddling) Race Series Northeast Championship. This championship will be part of the annual white water race done on the Passagassawakeag (Passy) River (April 7) that is run by the Waldo County YMCA. Details of the event can be found on web site location shown below. Currently several MaCKRO members are contacting schools in Maine with an invitation to participate. NECKRA folks are contacting schools in southern New England. This ACA series has been represented in other parts of county but not the northeast. ACA gave MaCKRO and the Waldo County YMCA a lot of flexibility to put on this event so we decided to give it try and see if this could generate more college participation in races. Incorporating it with the annual race on the Passy made it easier to organize. Thanks to the Waldo County YMCA for helping out with this effort. PAGE 7

8 Cold Water Safety Reminders Please be careful and PREPARED when paddling in cold weather and on cold water, even when the air is warm. Please follow the following safety tips. Your life could depend on it!! 1. ALWAYS wear a lifejacket when the water temp is 60 or below. It may take you longer than you think to get yourself out of submersion and both cold water and hypothermia can rob you of muscle control and energy. This common sense rule should NEVER be violated! 2. ALWAYS have a set of dry clothing available, either in a dry bag in your canoe/kayak or waiting for you at your vehicle or at your finish destination, whichever is most appropriate. 3. Don t paddle alone, or at least let someone know where you ll be and when they can expect to see you back and what they should do if they don t see you or hear from you. If you must paddle alone, even if you ve recruited a neighborhood watch, paddle close to a bank or shore where self-rescue is easy and in waters and watercraft that are reasonably safe. 4. Wear appropriate clothing. Dry suits are great but expensive. Wet suits do the trick and are not quite so expensive. Other forms of neoprene and polyester work fine, as well as wool sweaters, hats, and mittens. Avoid cotton; it s worthless when wet. In fact, it s worse than having nothing on. Heed the saying: Wool in winter; cotton kills. 5. Carry Hot Hands or a similar product with you. If your hands are so cold you can t grip your paddle, you might as well be up a creek without one. I ve been in that predicament.not fun! 6. Use common sense. A particularly windy, wavy day of cold water paddling is not the same as a windy, wavy day in warm water. The chances of something happening are much higher and the recovery is much more difficult, increasing the length of time of exposure. Either don t paddle that day, or paddle on a more protected body of water and in a stable craft. Please paddle safely!!! Have Fun!! - Colleen J.! PAGE 8

13 Where in the World is MaCKRO? The Yukon 1000 and TheYukon 460 And you thought the Kenduskeag was grueling! That's 1000 and as in MILES! Terry Wescott has spent several months of his life going to the Yukon Territory multiple times to compete in both races. As have several other Maine racers, including Billy Deighan, Paul Cole, Ron Muir, Ralph Robinson, Neal Phillips, Bob Miller, Brad and Dawn Krogg, and Bob and Sandra Mitchell, to name just the ones I know of. The race follows the Yukon River from White Horse to Dawson for the 460, and to Dalton Bridge in Alaska for the The 460 is in the ballpark of 60 hours of paddling with a mandatory 10 hourr stop. There are about 75 boats competing which get lumped into 5 classes the voyageurs (war canoes for 6 or more paddlers), solo canoes, tandem canoes, solo kayaks, and tandem kayaks. Terry entered the voyageur class twice, then the tandem with Sandra his third year. Despite traveling to the other side of the country, they got beaten by a team from Maine! Dawn and Brad Krogg won the tandem class that year. Terry describes the race, paddling 20 hours to Carmacks and the mandatory lay over. He then continues, intently instructing that when you come to 5 Finger Rapids, line up and run the waves, don't try to cut to the sides. Then at Rink, shoot through on the right side. The race continues to Kirkman Man Creek for 3 more hours of layover where They give you a thin watery bowl of soup with veggies. It's the most delicious bowl you've ever had!!. But, after all the coaching on river running, he cautions that the biggest challenge is don't get lost - stay out of the floughs! Terry and Sandra, who has logged 3,380 miles to date in these two races, tackled the 1000 last year, somewhere around a 7 day race. Terry and Sandra finished it in 7 days, 8hrs, and 40 some minutes. It's not quite so well attended only 4 people started last year so they're planning on holding it every other year. They strongly advise you compete in the 460 before trying the Terry describes paddling for 18 hrs/day (mandatory daily 6hr stops) with the killer being when they crossed into Alaska and gained an hour they had to paddle for 19 hours that day. Terry and Chip plan on competing in the 460 this year. Be thinking of them come June, and best of luck to anyone that lines up at the start with them!
