STAFF BULLETIN JULY 13, 2018 SUMMER PICNIC THURSDAY AUGUST 16-5:00 PM Mystic Seaport Staff and their guests are invited to the annual Summer Picnic at the Boat Shed.

Staff and one guest are invited along with children under 10 for free. Additional guests are $20.00. Drink tickets will be distributed at check in.

If baking is not your thing and you would like to be a judge for this event please email Kristen or Jeanne to let us know.

Sign-up sheets will be distributed to individual departments, please sign up and indicate the number of guests in your party by Friday August 10 th. Staff and one guest are invited along with children under 10 for free. Additional guests are $ Drink tickets will be distributed at check in. The annual dessert contest is a great opportunity to show off your baking skills! Desserts will be judge on taste, presentation and creativity. If baking is not your thing and you would like to be a judge for this event please Kristen or Jeanne to let us know. Employees are encouraged to bring desserts even if they do not want to enter into the contest. 2 A NOTE FROM THE SUSTAINABILITY COMMITTEE: Thirteen days into Plastic Free July! How are you doing? For helpful tips for living plastic free, visit The Story of Stuff is a short animated documentary about the lifecycle of material goods, written by Annie Leonard, executive director of Greenpeace USA. The Story of Stuff Project reminds us that avoiding plastic for any amount of time is a great thing to do but that alone won t end our addiction to plastic. What we also need to do is eliminate problematic plastic from the economy altogether. To do that, we need to work together to push communities, companies, and countries to #breakfreefromplastic. To do that, here are some ideas: Continue to refuse single-use plastic. Notice businesses that are making an effort to reduce single-use plastic, such as restaurants that no longer offer straws, or have switched to eco-friendly straws, to go containers, cutlery, etc., and thank them for their efforts. Praise them on social media, tagging the individual business (others are watching, and will get the hint eventually). Write to your favorite restaurant asking them to consider eliminating single-use plastic straws, cups, containers, cutlery, and offer more eco-friendly options, or mention it in person. Share articles about the hazards of single-use plastic on social media and tag local businesses to help spread the word. Keep it positive! NEWS! Starbucks announced Monday they will eliminate all plastic straws by 2020 and replace them with "adult sippy cup" lids. Starbucks estimates this change will help to eliminate more than 1 billion plastic straws globally per year, most of which ends up in landfills and the ocean. (Forbes.com) Remember, the Sustainability Committee would love to hear about changes you have made and tips you have discovered, so we can share the good news in upcoming Staff Bulletins!
