Susan Harkins and Ken Lock The National Park Service is accepting surveys to help them create a general management and river management plan for the future of Big Bend National Park and the Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River. From the Spring 2000 Newsletter: The National Park Service (NPS) is starting to plan for the future of Big Bend national Park and the Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River The new plans and study will be used to guide the management of Big Bend National Park and Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River for the next 10 to 15 years. In developing these plans, NPS staff will work closely with federal, state, and local agencies, interested parties, and the general public. Big Bend National Park preserves and protects than 800,000 acres of northern Chihuahuan Desert....The purpose of the general management and river management plan is to ensure that the park and river managers have a clearly defined direction to protect resources and to provide public access. NPS Staff will work closely with federal, state, and local agencies, interested parties, and the general public. What can we do? Each one of us can fill out the survey provided in the Big Bend newsletter (call to have a newsletter mailed to you) You can also send me at shark@ethos. net and I will send you a.pdf file that you can print, fill out and mail to the NPS. Also, Ken and I will have copies of the survey available at the next meeting. The survey wants to asses what you value most about the park, how you want to see the park 20 years from now, what concerns you have, and what part of the Harte Ranch you want to see recommended for wilderness designation. 7 PAGE 7 NEWSLETTER OF THE DALLAS DOWNRIVER CLUB VISIT OUR WEBSITE AT Continued from Page 1 To spruce up the fraction of the course not reached by the Lamb family, a pre-race Trinity Cleanup was held August 26 with the collection of 10 fully stuffed bags of litter by 8 volunteers. Many thanks go to Nadine Bourg, Glen Pye, Neil Licalsi, Allen Scott, Susie Deubeck, Chris Cockrell, Betty Scott, and Alan Tittle. We nearly finished what the Lambs have not. Cold watermelon served as a welcome refresher afterwards. After picking up 70...(?) bags of trash almost individually David, Alan and Rachel Lamb took the weekend off from their routine to paddle in another race - time off for extraordinary behavior. Volunteers needed. A few volunteer positions still need to be filled; riverside safety, sweep boats, race timing, spotting, records, dinner, bake sale, shuttles and back up support staff. Most positions are light duty. Safety assistance would be especially helpful from those that have had the river rescue class, first aid or CPR training. Questions? Contact Alan Tittle at (972) or tapnala@aol.com for more information on racing or volunteering. Sponsors This race would be impossible without our sponsors, who donate lots of great stuff for the raffle! Read about our wonderful sponsors on Page 2!
