2 About Northville Rowing Northville Rowing is: o A varsity club sport at NHS o A co-ed, no experience required club sport o A self-funding club. No $ from the school district Thirteenth season this fall Fleet of 17 boats Team of 40 to 50 rowers Row out of Ford Lake Consistent success at state, regional, and national events Eight alumni rowing at university level

4 What is Rowing? Types of Rowing - Sweeping: one oar per rower vs. - Sculling: two oars per person Types of Boats - Single - Pairs/Doubles - Fours/Quads - Eights Rowing is a blend of technical precision and the application of power over a defined distance.

5 Rowing Seasons Fall: Longer distance (>3000m); head style racing Winter: Conditioning on the ergometer (indoor rowing machine) and Weight Training Spring: Shorter Sprints (1000m m)

6 The Team Novice/Varsity Squads - Novice for one year from the beginning of the first season of completion Coaches, Coxswains, Rowers - Each member of the team performs specific purposes - Teamwork - each part doing their part for the whole

7 Location of the Boathouse/Lake

8 Expectations - Attendance - To succeed, rowers/coxswains must attend practices Boat line-ups announced Sunday evenings boats launch at 4:30 If the rower cannot attend they are expected to contact the coaches before practice, the earlier the better. Fill out the absence form for any planned or regular absence for a regatta or practice(s). The form is not meant for last minute absences due to illness or unforeseen circumstances. - Appropriate Clothing - Trou / Spandex / Athletic Clothing - No loose pants, basketball shorts or sweatpants on the water Too many layers > too few - Socks, hats, jackets Additional clothing for after practice - Dry clothes to change into - Nature of the Sport / Weather - This is a water sport, bring extra clothes because you will get wet. Cancellation of practice only occurs in extreme wind and thunderstorms, so be prepared for anything!

9 Practice Practice begins September 5, NHS Practices are Monday Friday, 4:30 to 6:30 PM (Some Saturdays maybe required. See calendar for planned Saturday practices.) Water Practices are held at Ford Lake in Ypsilanti. Practice location is within Lakeshore Apartment Complex Rowers should have school ID with them at each practice and regatta. Every rower should have AT LEAST one full change of clothes at practice. Rain or shine dress appropriately Rowers should never take cell phones or car keys on the water In inclement weather, practice will be held in the rowing room at NHS If practice is moved to NHS, text blast will be sent by 2:30pm at the latest. All rowers should bring drinking water to practice the coach if rower will miss practice for any reason. Fill out the

10 Practice 1. Please be on time so we can start at 4:30pm and get as much water time as possible. 2. Unknown absences can have a negative impact on practices and may cause athletes to miss water time or not have an opportunities to row. 3. Lineups and boats may change due to weather, equipment damage, or unknown absences. Regatta Weekends Thursday or Friday we will load the trailer. Trailer loading days may take up to 30 minutes longer plan to stay at the lake until 7:00pm.

11 Practice Band Events Excused Friday Night Football -September 22 and 29 -October 20 Wednesday Afternoon/Evening Marching Band Rehearsal Academic Graded Assignments are Excused Absences from Practice ie Band, Choir, and Yearbook NOTE: This does not include last minute rehearsal calls that are not on the original calendar. Make arrangements and notify teachers and coaches accordingly.

12 Line Ups Line Ups/Boatings for Practice: Sunday Afternoon/Evening -Subs/Reserves (DO NOT ASSUME YOU WON T BE IN A BOAT)

13 Safety - Before rowing: - Swim test - Emergency Card - Physical required before the regular season - Trainer on hand at school - Available after class - Lifejackets in launch during outdoor training

14 Safety The boat and its oars are also a floatation device.

16 Regattas Regattas are full day events Rowers and coxswains expected to be at regatta until the last boat is back on the trailer Early morning arrival for boat preparation, dismissal when boats are loaded back on trailer Typically held on Saturdays, rowers will be notified of arrival times for regattas (Some Sundays, and possible Championship Regatta on a Friday). Boats are loaded on Friday and transported to regatta; boats rigged morning of regatta (some may rig the night before depending on regatta schedule). In case of a conflict with a regatta contact coaches at minimum two weeks prior to regatta or use the absence notification form for any known absences prior to the start of the season. (Online or Tonight) Families provide their own transportation to/from regattas and accommodations. Some regattas require overnight accommodations. NRC will block rooms for these regattas. Accommodations are not included in Dues.

SAT Test Dates-October 7, 2017 **Conflicts with Scrimmage, There is another November 4th after the season ends**. Regattas Cranbrook/Saline Scrimmage (Ford Lake)-October 7, 2017 (Saturday) Head of the Grand (Lansing, MI)-October 14, 2017 (Saturday) Leelanau Chase (Traverse City, MI)-October 28, 29 (Jr Race is Sunday Only) Fundraisers Heritage Festival Event (Northville, MI) September (Fri-Sun) *****Traditional-Rowathon (Northville, MI)-September 16, 2017 Festival Golf Outing-October 8, 2017 (Sunday) Raffle-TBD Wine Tasting-TBD

21 REGISTRATION Click on the button on the web site to begin the registration process Dues for Fall season are $700 There is a $25 discount if paid Tonight 8/28. Please register and pay before the first day of practice, September 5, Refund (less $100) if your rower withdraws before September 19, 2017 Please send all the required forms before first day of practice to: membership.northvillerowing@gmail.com

22 REQUIRED FORMS 1. ATHLETIC PHYSICAL EXAM FORM MANDATORY for each rower, one per school year dated after April 15th. 23 US ROWING MEMBERSHIP Each rower must be have a current membership with US Rowing New Rowers: Register with US Rowing ( using rower s name, not parent s name) and sign their waiver. Membership valid one year from sign-up. If you already have a membership verify that is valid until the end of rowing season. If not, please renew. 24 CARPOOL Please send carpool request one week before the start of practice Carpool form and instructions available on NRC Website. Carpools can be organized based on location and # of rowers, if interested fill out the form and to Dawn Marie Ozog at dawnmarieozog@hotmail.com Once determined, carpool groups decide their own schedule and pickup/drop off locations. LOTS OF ADDITIONAL INFORMATION IS REQUIRED AS PART OF ONLINE REGISTRATION: Allergies, donations, text blasts, waivers, yard signs, etc. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY!
