WORLD T.E.A.M. SPORTS We are excited to share with you our success stories of was an exciting, innovative, productive, eventful year for World T.E.A.M. Sports (The Exceptional Athlete Matters). We officially introduced a new cutting edge, inclusive adventure race, pushing the envelope as to what is possible for an inclusive sports TEAM. We significantly grew our Face of America Bike Ride, helping over twice the number of severely injured service members this year. We also created new free inclusive kids sports programs including a free inclusive skating and sled hockey sports clinic at Harvard University, and a new free inclusive sailing program, partnering with a local sailing facility, along with our Ultimate T.E.A.M free inclusive multi-sports clinics at Boston University. We again partnered with the City of Boston in making the rapidly growing Hub On Wheels bike ride inclusive and accessible to all. We also created a new inclusive Kayak Challenge in Vancouver, including severely injured American and Canadian service members, and others, in a new inclusive outdoor adventure. We would like to introduce you to just a few of the participants in our inclusive sports programs. Enjoy reading about and meeting some exceptional people. We hope that you will be inspired to join us in 2009 as we continue to break down barriers, create new opportunities, actively participate in the arena, and positively and significantly change lives! It is our great pleasure and our great passion. We all ride the same road! James M. Benson Founder & Board Chairman World T.E.A.M. Sports Chris Carrigg Executive Director World T.E.A.M. Sports 4

WORLD T.E.A.M. SPORTS 2008 Face of America Bike Ride May 3-4, 2008 The FACE OF AMERICA BIKE RIDE is an inclusive bike ride that honors and actively includes servicemen and women who have been severely injured in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Our mission is to honor these service members and to let them know that they can still be active athletes and still be a part of the TEAM! The two-day, 110 mile ride begins in Bethesda, Maryland, travels to Frederick, Maryland and concludes in historic and scenic Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Now in its seventh year, The Face of America Bike Ride offers a unique opportunity for civilians and servicemen and women, both with and without disabilities, to ride side-byside; the ride is open to everybody. Over 250 participants, including over 50 recently severely injured servicemen and women, participated in the 2008 Face of America Bike Ride. World T.E.A.M. Sports partners with organizations including the Soldiers Angels Foundation and the Injured Semper Fi Foundation, as well as service members at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, National Naval Medical Center, Brooke Army Medical Center, the U.S. Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton and the U.S. Marine Corps Base Camp Lejune, amongst others. 6

Success Story Josh Sharpe 2008 World T.E.A.M. Sports puts a focus on bringing together disabled and ablebodied people, forming a team to accomplish a goal. Other organizations put on events solely for the disabled, and the able-bodied are just helping. It s not a team. It s almost that the able bodied babysit you. At World T.E.A.M. Sports everybody comes together as a team, the disabled may help the able-bodied just as the able-bodied may help the disabled. There s no stigma attached to being disabled at World T.E.A.M. Sports. It s a team spirit. Josh Sharpe, retired United States Navy, 3 time participant in the Face of America Bike Ride, and a particapnt on the 2008 World T.E.A.M Sports Vancouver Inclusive Kayak Challenge. 7

WORLD T.E.A.M. SPORTS The Real Deal Inclusive Sports Adventure June 27-29, INCLUSIVE SPORTS ADVENTURE The Real Deal Inclusive Sports Adventure, held north of Vail, Colorado, includes mountain biking in the Colorado Rockies, white water rafting, climbing, hiking, rappelling, a zip-line over the Colorado River, orienteering, swimming in the Colorado River, and multiple T.E.A.M. problem solving, action-packed activities over the course of three days (the first day is a training day). The Real Deal Inclusive Sports Adventure showcases the power of inclusive T.E.A.M.s, teaming participants with and without disabilities - showing what is really possible when you include everybody and work together. Talk about T.E.A.M. building! To succinctly summarize the event, it was amazingly inspiring! Bob Vogel Success Story 2008 Real Deal Inclusive Sports Adventure Participant I was injured 23 years ago. I have been fascinated by adventure sports but in a wheelchair, it didn t seem likely that I could ever participate. The Real Deal was beyond my wildest dreams. It was amazing to see an event absolutely integrated, with abled bodied and people with different disabilities and everyone working together seamlessly. It gave a whole new meaning to the word teamwork. It forced me to reframe things I d learned. I didn t want to be pushed or pulled on my mountain bike. But I realized that the smart teams worked together on the uphills, with a tandem bike pulling a handbike. My pride was costing me and my team time. It was a complete, and welcome paradigm shift in my thinking. We all got a chance to be real. It was magic. Bob Vogel, 2008 Real Deal Inclusive Sports Adventure participant, freelance journalist, photographer, and professional ski instructor. 8

Hosted at The Bright Hockey Center at Harvard University. 10

Success Story Nick Parrillo 2008 When we talk about how Nick skates and plays hockey we can tell he s proud of himself. Special Olympics was unable to accommodate him, but World T.E.A.M. Sports said of course to bring him. They put Nick on an adaptive skating sled, and guided him on the ice while he held a hockey stick, and he had the feeling of flying across the ice. He can t talk, but his smile said it all said Kara Parrillo of Rhode Island, mother of Nick, a 10 year old who is blind, non-verbal, developmentally delayed and autistic who participated in the Free Inclusive Skating & Sled Hockey Clinic, February

WORLD T.E.A.M. SPORTS Vancouver Island Inclusive Kayak Challenge August, 2008 Vancouver Island Inclusive Kayak trip with US and Canadian service members a great success! The Vancouver Island Inclusive Kayak Challenge was an open water adventure around the beautiful Vancouver Island that included injured service members from the United States and Canada. Although there was some challenging weather, we did prove once again that an inclusive TEAM is capable of meeting great challenges and pushing the envelope with innovative, inspiring sports adventures! We are already planning our trip next year from Seattle to Vancouver; let us know if you would like to join us! 14

WORLD T.E.A.M. SPORTS Profile A Volunteer: Jenny Brine Class of 2009 Harvard University, Tri-captain of Harvard University s Women s Ice Hockey Team Jenny Brine was introduced to World T.E.A.M. Sports by her teammate, and Captain, Julie Chu, who had volunteered at our Ultimate TEAM free Inclusive Sports clinic at Boston University. Jenny volunteered at the next Free Ultimate TEAM Inclusive Sports clinics at B.U and then said yes to helping to lead the development of a new free inclusive sports clinic, the 2008 Free Inclusive Skating & Sled Hockey Clinic at Harvard University. Jenny recruited her TEAMmates at Harvard, along with members of the Harvard Men s Team, to volunteer and help lead this very popular, inspiring clinic. They were also joined by members of the United States Men s Paralympic Sled Hockey Team. World T.E.A.M. Sports is helping to nominate Miss Brine for the John Wooden Humanitarian Award. 16

Profile Camaraderie, Life-changing Experiences Dorothy Ginda & Eric Frazier 2008 Dorothy Ginda, retired software executive and mother of two, met Eric Frazier, Sergeant-retired, United States Marine Corp, at the 2006 Face of America Bike Ride. They have become close friends. As a cyclist/trainer I had no experience working with a paralyzed hand-cyclist, but as an executive I knew I could find the right people who did and could help keep Eric on the road to becoming a world class athlete. says Dorothy. The support of the able-bodied athletes who rode next to us, and told me I could do it, was a big help with my overall rehabilitation. World T.E.A.M. Sports got me started. It was the first time I was ever on a handcycle. This year I was an alternate for the US para-olympics team. Eric Frazier, Sergeant-retired, United States Marine Corp, 3 time Face of America Bike Ride participant, 2008 Real Deal Inclusive Sports Adventure participant. World T.E.A.M. Sports does what others don t. It is all inclusive. It gives the average person the opportunity to be alongside veterans and share their experience. It s a chance to step out of my world, while doing something I love -- being on my bike, and help others who need just a little help. It makes you start to see things in a different way. It s not about being the very best athlete or the very fastest athlete but doing or being exceptional in some way. People who come into our lives and help are like angels, Dorothy is an angel to me. Says Eric about his friend. He is amazing, we will be friends for life, says Dorothy. Since the Face of America Bike Ride ride in 2006, Eric and Dorothy have participated each year in the Face of America Ride and most recently competed together in the 2008 Real Deal T.E.A.M. Sports Adventure Challenge in Denver Colorado. 17

WORLD T.E.A.M. SPORTS Profile A World T.E.A.M. Sports Sponsor: Lon Dolber CEO American Portfolios My first experience with World T.E.A.M. Sports, I went as a climbing coach and teacher, but I came back as a student. It was a long hard climb. If I d have gone with friends, I would have given up and gone to a hotel, but the challenged athletes just wouldn t quit. I only got to the top because they went to the top. World T.E.A.M. Sports is not about taking handicapped people on a climb but taking a team, acting as a team. It s different from watching an event. You are part of it, says Lon, about his participation on World T.E.A.M. Sports inclusive TEAM climb of Mt. Kilimanjaro in This year, I took a group of 30 employees on the 2008 Face of America Bike Ride. All said that to ride next to a soldier missing his legs was an experience they ll never forget. They came back wanting to do more. From a corporate point of view, World T.E.A.M. Sports is a good thing. Our staff is involved in World T.E.A.M. Sports and positively affected by it. It s not just giving money to World T.E.A.M. Sports. You have to get involved. You are on the TEAM! says Lon. I give money to World T.E.A.M. Sports, I have my employees participate, I recruit other sponsors, but let me tell you something - I can honestly say that I get way more from my participation with World T.E.A.M. Sports than World T.E.A.M. Sports gets from me. Lon Dolber, Chief Executive Officer of American Portfolios Financial Services, Inc., New York, World T.E.A.M. Sports board member, and participant in many World T.E.A.M. Sports events, including the 2007 & 2008 Real Deal Inclusive Sports Adventure, the 2007 & 2008 Face of America Bike Ride, and the 2008 Vancouver Inclusive Kayak Trip 18
